BOYS VOLLEYBALL: Tigers outlast Titans in five games; Apaches ready for rematch with Wolfpack
Here's Scott Galetti's update on the Pasadena Star News area boys volleyball teams.
South Pasadena High and San Marino put on the area's match of the week with the Tigers prevailing in five hard-fought games, 25-17, 23-24, 25-18, 20-25. 15-9. Mark Stochl paced South Pasadena, Division V runner-up in 2005, with 17 kills and seven blocks. Tim Tong posted 15 kills and six blocks and David Allen chipped in with 10 kills. Tigers setter Kevin Kuramoto was busy with 45 assists. Shane Chen led San Marino with 19 kills while Brandon Brown added 12 kills and 14 digs. The two teams will meet again on May 1 at South Pasadena.
Pacific League title on the line on Friday
After losing a tough five-game match to league-rival Claremont, Arcadia swept away Hoover and Burbank Burroughs in preparation of its rematch with Claremont on Friday in the Apaches' gym. The two schools split the season series a year ago with the Apaches winning in five games on the Wolfpack's floor and Claremont winning at Arcadia in four games. By league rules, Claremont was given the league's top seed by winning in fewer games.
Arcadia can still win the title outright by winning this week's match in four games or less. Of course, there's still a matter of getting past Crescenta Valley, not an easy task.
Tough week for Panthers
Pasadena Poly did not drop out of the CIF-Southern Section Division V top 10 despite a four-game non-league loss to Oakwood (No. 4 in Division V) and a four-game league loss to Chadwick last week. Division II and Division V did not report polls, while there was no change in Division III and Division IV.

to goteamgo,
We are just feeding this guy's anger. I should have ignored him (or her?), and now I will.
La Salle spent two hours Wed. night waiting for a Brentwood team to show up, and they never did. Something about a schedule mixup. the match is now on Monday April 23.
It was smart for La Salle to schedule the Rio Hondo teams, because local contests are fun for both teams.

Hey anonymous -
Get some anger management classes. Obviously you or your kid did not get into La Salle. Take your anger elsewhere. And also, I don't like lattes.
As someone who particpiated in a "non-glamour" sport when I was in high school, I'll go on record as saying those kids worked just as hard and were just as dedicated as everyone else in the "glamour sports." Just give them their 15 minutes of fame - they have earned it.
Nobody cares about the pompous yuppies from La Salle or volleyball. You all think you're better than everyone else and worse yet, you think people care about such a pathetic sport. I'd rather watch Will and Grace than those pansy's prancing across the gym floor. Keep your yuppie mouth around that latte in Sierra Madre and shut up.
In their first home game of the season (finally) the La Salle Lancers rolled over Cathedral Tues. in 3 games for their 2nd league win. They have a home non-league match Wed. against Brentwood, and another home league match Friday against Bishop Amat.
For all of you posters (or is it just one?) who are bashing Volleyball, go away and post something positive in whatever your interest is. VB is important to the players, just as waterpolo, track, swimming and other non glamor sports are important to the participants and parents.

One of South Pasadena's top players was actually on the football team and many teams around Southern California draw players from football and basketball. The best example that comes to mind is University of Arizona's second-leading scorer Chase Budinger. He not only was highly recruited as a basketball player out of La Costa Canyon High School near San Diego, he was also one of the top volleyball players in the country. Athletes do play volleyball believe it or not.
FINALLY! Thank you for your coverage Scott. I can't tell you how much that means that someone finally recognizes us volleyball players as athletes. People think just because we're not good enough or tough enough to play football, baseball or basketball that we're not athletes. Well, we are and thanks for pointing that out. Tackle football was too rough for me, but volleyball is just right. Sideout!
This is great. All five of us fans of volleyball in the Arcadia and Pasadena area will rejoice. Will we get weekly updates on if someone has two spikes a game? Thanks for the info!
Sincerely,
Star Wars Geek
I echo everybody else's comments. Thank you so much Scott for bringing our sport some coverage. I know that 99.9% of the public don't care about volleyball, but we do. I can't tell you how humiliating it is when there is three people at a game. Maybe....just maybe...this will up the audience to five people. Thanks! Shane Chen rocks!
Well said Todd. Thanks Scott for the coverage. I
Thanks Scott for your interest in taking coverage of Star News area Boys Volleyball to a higher level. Ive been at South Pas for 18 seasons and have never seen an area Top Teams list. The area has been well represented in CIF competition in Boys Volleyball with Pasadena Poly, San Gabriel and South Pasadena all reaching the CIF Finals in their divisions in 2005. Obviously Arcadia has had a great program since the 1970's, the only reason they havent won more CIF championships is because they play in the impossible to win big in Div 2 level. Not easy to beat the likes of Santa Barbara and Valencia etc. Keep up the good work. Thanks again.
I wish people would be more serious about this. Volleyball is a very exciting sport. I know for a fact that besides badminton and ping pong, volleyball is the third most popular sport in Arcadia......among special olympics competitors.
