Story on Pasadena Games
PASADENA - Following a one-year hiatus, the Pasadena Games returned to Pasadena City College Saturday for its 64th annual edition.

On a day when many of the top high school athletes were on display, Muir High's Kiani Profit enjoyed a successful afternoon in the sun.

After posting a first-place finish in the girls 100-meter hurdles, Profit saved her best for last in the girls 300-meter hurdles when she ran away from the field.

Her time of 42.94 was the second-best high school time in the United States behind Porsche Holden of Redan High School in Stone Mountain, Ga. Holden ran a 42.84 this season.

"I felt good about it," said Profit, the defending CIF-Southern Section Division III 300-meter hurdles champion. "I got out strong and tried to keep my form and strength until the end of the race."

Profit was strong in her first individual event of the day, the 100-meter hurdles, and posted a personal-best time of 14.39.

"The first race is not really my race and I didn't expect myself to go that fast," said Profit, who finished third in the 2006 CIF-SS Division III 100-meter hurdles finals. "I was just trying to run my fastest time in front of my hometown.

"All I wanted to do was PR (personal record) my last time and I did it by a whole second, so I'm proud of that."

Profit was named Female Athlete of the Meet.

"I've never got Female Athlete of the Meet and to do it in front of all of my family and friends, I'm just proud of myself," Profit said. "I'm just thankful for all my coaches and everyone that's been encouraging me since I was little and didn't have the strength to go on."

Profit also ran the second leg of the girls 400-meter small schools relay with Mustang teammates Lindsay Cooper, Taylor Mills and Tai Hawkins.

She is still undecided on where she wants to go to college, but is leaning toward either Georgia Tech University or the University of Arkansas.

"I want to get out and see other places and when I took my visits, they just stuck out to me," Profit said.

Taft's Jeshua Anderson was named the Male Athlete of the Meet.

An alternate, Anderson outdueled Diamond Ranch's Terry Prentice in the boys 300-meter hurdles invitational with a time of 36.47.

However, Prentice did get the best of Anderson and the field to win the boys 100-meter hurdles invitational in 13.99.

Other individual winners included La Salle's Shannon Gibbs in the girls 100-meter A small schools event.

Muir's Taylor Mills took first place in the girls 100-meter B small schools race.

La Salle's Shelby McCray earned first place in the girls discus with a throw of 115-06.

Maranatha earned first place in the girls 400-meter A small schools relay, edging Alhambra.

Muir's Eugene Palmer placed first in the boys small schools A 100-meter dash.

The Mustangs' Marcus Thompson took first in the boys small schools 300-meter hurdles.

Alhambra won the boys 800 large schools sprint relay.

It is a shame that the track and field season is now going into the league prelim and finals stages next week and all we hear about for the last two weeks is the all star basketball gamse thought basketball was over long time ago i see some coverage for game hype but i think it was a piece on the game almost every day leading up to the game there were track meets going on during that time that hardly got any coverage all i see in the paper is baseball softball and vollyball hardly any track or for that fact swimming coverage. track and swimming are two sports that need coverage because the number of kids participating is sheinking every year. why well we all know its not the glamor sport baseball basketball football all are pro sports teams here in america and track in large part is still high school and collage a few pro meets now and then the glamor sports get plenty of coverage give the little guy some.all i see when i open the paper is dodgers angeles and all the high school teams in baseball and softball are all the reporters x baseball players. as i said star news the area league prelim and finals for most leagues start next week and then its on to CIF glory hopefully for many in the area. lets see whos going or has good chances of going all the way to the cif championships in the area.give us a little preview of the top runners this far in the season like you do every sport- this type of coverage would help to boost the young men and women who have worked all year to get to this point! thanks in advance...
