Update on July 6 Hall of Fame All-Star game.

| | Comments (50) |

I spoke with Arroyo High coordinator Leon Ward, who is in charge of the Hall of Fame All-Star game. He said only half the coaches sent in nomination forms and they're scrambling to put together rosters. He's meeting with both coaches tonight (Tuesday), but I would suggest that any seniors, particularly those who made all-area teams, give Ward a call, or contact Joel Murphy at Maranatha to let them know you're interested.
Leon Ward can be reached at 626-391-9177, or you can contact Murphy at 626-817-4000, Ext. 1925.

The final roster for an all-star game may not be clear until after the game. Even the roster in the program that we buy at the game will not be 100% reflective of which kids are on the field.

when will we know the final rosters

Big A,

I think kris robison and Kevin hess are a lock for the all star game. I don't know about nick ponce, however I know he is playing with robison in the all star game at granada hills on May 20th. LaValle and Lance are playing too... should be a good one.

From Arcadia, I would expect Kevin Hess, Kris Robinson and Nick Ponce to be playing.

is anyone from arcadia playing

Field goal posts do narrow from 23 ft to 18.5 ft in college and from 18.5 to 18 in pros. But hash marks are narrower making it more of a straight kick(easier). My thought would be to make the hash marks wider as the level got higher.

New York said:

Dawg,
I'm certainly no expert, but I have been a part o multiple high school games as a player or coach within multiple states. To the best of my knowledge, high school rules are standard. The only variations I have seen are related to tie-breakers seeding for state playoffs.

I think some differences between hs and college rules are for safety (college rules allow cut blocks outside the tackle box and downfield.) Other rule differences are probably meant to either speed the game up (NFL clock does not stop on a first down) or simply to hold the players to a higher level of play (NFL receiver needs two feet inbounds, penalties are counted from spot of foul, etc). It's also unique how hash marks are at different widths. I think goal posts may be wider/narrower but I'm not sure. It's also interesting that an NFL ball does not have a stripe like HS and college balls do. That might be to make the ball harder to see in NFL, but that's just a guess.

DAWG said:

Thanx NY for the info rules info. Why are the rules different on all levels? Is it a safety issue or are the high schools rules around the nation the same for HS games? Do the rules differ from league to league or state to state?

DAWG

New York said:

Dawg,

The NCAA does not even utilize he same on-field rules as the NFL. It seems that each level upward has more difficult rules for players to perform: NFL requires a receive to have two feet inbounds (NCAA only one), NFL clock does not stop with a first down, etc.

I do wish High School eligibility had to conform to NCAA eligibility. I think a lot of high school players are deceived: they may think that meeting minimum academic HS eligibility standards will always be good enough. Then, there is a rude awakening junior year when they realize that it may be too late.

DAWG said:

QUESTION?????

Should high school football utilize the same NCAA and/or NFL rules on the field?

I am with you NY. Back in the day, almost all SGV divsion 1 kids played in the east/west game.

New York said:

I don't get this whole college ball thing with regard to why these kids are not playing. This game used to be filled with kids who were heading off to play college ball. Are they concerned that they are out of shape? If that's the case, then this game should be played near the end of the football season while the kids are still in playing shape.

Are they concerned that they will get hurt practicing and playing FOOTBALL? Isn't that what they will be doing when they head off to school?

I would love to see Carter and Arriola show everyone how good they really are. Roxas, Collis, and Shactner would not play because of college ball. Smith is done playing football. I dont know about Favor i guess if they need a kicker.

I don't know why we didn't win more games.

I say that Mulligan coaches next years game. If Wheeler can win it (2001)than Mulligan would be a lock, right? Do you actually have to be a coach to be nominated to coach the game?
Sorry Jim

Dawg,
Hate to break it to you about the Pope, but......
Anyway, does anyone know what the requirements are to be a head coach, like must he be a teacher at the school, teaching credentials, degree (s) required and so on?

SF hasn't turn in names - somebody wake up Bonds - he has been asleep since mid-way through last season.

Mr. Mister;
There is no scientific data required on having the PERFECT high school coach. The percentages fall under the amount of high schools per capita and the volume of coaches available who desire to coach high school football. Is just like other positions in the corporate world, lawyers, doctors, law enforcement, college profs. The list can go on for ever. There will never be one PERFECT job within our life time, other than the Pope.

This is not the time to place blame. Let's celebrate and support the west all-stars and coaches. Active fans should utilize email and contact Leon Ward (former Monrovia and then Bassett Head Coach) directly or contact players and make sure they know that they can nominate themselves. Hell, they just need to show up to and attend a minimum number of practices. Also, kids should be aware that the original published roster is never 100% reflective of the final game roster. That means that some kids drop off and we need replacements. If you want to be part of this game then be aggressive and get in front of the right people.

By the way, it is no surprise that Mooney and Garrison already submitted recommendations. I'd like to see those guys work together. Garrison's enthusiasm with Mooney's strategy would be fun to watch.

To notybuyinit & player;

My post was posted in a general content for the coaches within the SGV. Getting upset for something so simple is not required to start name calling coaches.

If you going to state certain negative statements about HS coaches, then have some evidentiary values and supporting details on why some coaches have not filled a simple form. No one really knows what the SGV coaches have accomplished for the forthcoming list of players that will be voted.

I'll speak out for RH Prep and coach Drain although it is not my place to do so and this is just my opinion. RHP's most deserving player to play in the HOF game was Landon Goodwell. No other RHP player belonged in that HOF game two years ago and it is likely that coach Drain did not respond because he does not feel there is a player senior from last year's team that should be in this HOF game. That's a coach protecting his players with the knowledge that the HOF venue is a pretty good one.

In response to "panthers" earlier comment about all of Poly's best players are playing rugby I say that suggests that they are the best prepared to play in the HOF game but, in my opinion, Hirshmann was the only real candidate.

Finally there are a few that don't play because of the risk of injury. A lot of these guys are not in football shape when the game comes around. And even if you are in shape that doesn't mean the tired lineman in front of you doesn't feel like offering a "look-out" block next down.

therealLC, Thanks for clearing up my question - my question was based upon the article.
Everyone knows that Wheeler is weak -- throw in the LC admin and the new AD -- you have a real collection of lazy _ _ _. Good luck to all LC athletes -

notbuyinit said:

Dawg,
Are you kidding us when you wrote all those excuses for those coaches - there is no excuse for any coach not to take 5 minutes and be able to reward players who have work hard for them for the the last 4 years - how hard is is to write a name on a form? If that is too hard for a head coach to do perhaps they can delgate that complicated task to one of their many assistant coaches or if not that then to the manager or the water boy or ball boy - they could certainly handle that difficult task. There is only one reason they haven't fill out the forms is that they are too lazy and only care about themselves because they don't care and there is no accountibility. "player" is right - it is a disgrace.

player said:

Respect for the coaches? How about respect for the game, or respect for the players. For starters every coach involved in this game knew what lied ahead before they signed up. Get off your butt and contact the school yourself instead of making a public cry.
Also, (coaches) don’t run through excuses like “other job” because what you’re saying is that this game or football takes a back seat to everything else. No one says that come season time!
In regards to the coaches of other schools not turning in paper work there should be no excuses either. I bet every varsity coach had spent countless hours already preparing lift programs, summer workouts, schedules, and passing league. For the COACHES to not take the time to fill some paperwork out for players who are not in the program anymore is disgraceful. Can you be any louder in saying that because they left you don’t care anymore? OR how about because it takes time and doesn’t help next year then I am to busy with “other stuff”.
How about all of those school who can not take the time to nominate at least one player be banned from submitting anyone for one for the following year.

DAWG said:

On the coaches defense:

Is easier for bloggers to accuse coaches of certain paper forms and other mild house keeping stuff.

If bloggers take time to see what historical SGV coaches are presently coaching our schools, they would think twice before ridiculing coaches decisions. There are possibly many factors that take place for certain players to be voted to the Hall of Fame game, such as academics, sportmanship, merit, and following school ethics.

Is easier for some bloggers to attack coaches, when they have no idea what coaches do as teachers, full-time workers, and other sporting events that are taking place through out the school year.

By the time the first practice starts, the West will have a great team.

Lets have some respect for the SGV coaches.

LCfan,
Wheeler doesn't know Peterson is committed to another game - by the way he was nominated by another coach in the league to that game. For Wheeler to nominate any one from LC it would mean he would have to get up off his lazy --- and do something - what is his excuse for not nominating other LC players. Hurry think fast!

I had the opportunity to speak to Peterson at a Monrovia HS baseball game back in March. Having a legit conversation with him about colleges, education, and talent was the top of his game. Based on our conversation, Peterson will make the right choices for his educational career and his decision for football will be made public when Lavelle is ready. Lets respect his choices and lets judge him by his character, rather than his decisions about what game to play.

Lavelle, I wish you luck and you play your best and any Shrine, Hall of Fame, West & East games that come along. The games that come along the college schedules are the ones that count. Just have FUN and your run with the ball to the end-zone.

New York said:

Why not nominate Peterson and let him have the option? Get the paper work started. Why can't he play in both games, unless they are on the same weekend?

LCfan said:

If Wheeler knows that Peterson is committed to another game, why would he nominate him?

Mr. Mister said:

I can't believe a stand up coach like Wheeler at La Canada wouldn't promote Lavelle Peterson. Mr. Wheeler please let your feelings about certian people down for a moment and do the right thing.

Can't you pretend that you like all people for a moment and just promote him once in your life?

One race the human race my friend. Get it or resign. Their is enough hate in the world Wheeler, let it go.

New York said:

That is a great lesson for anybody (especially current seniors wanting a crack at the all-star game) who wants anything in life. Don't wait to be nominated. Promote yourself respectfully and get in front of the right people. Don't wait for your high school coach to do it. Most of the local coaches are bad judges of talent anyway because they are not exposed to enough of it in order to make a qualified relative comparison.
