Fred,

What was the All Star game yesterday? It appears to have been missing quite a few playes.

Anonymous said:

Katie Mc Whirter plays for the Fillies, which is a legitamite 18U Gold team that didn't qualify for Nationals last year.

Anonymous said:

To my knowledge, the Div. 1 scholarship players from the Seniors game roster are:

Kathryn Poet, Missouri (SoCal Sliderz)
Shelby Gibbs, Santa Clara (CA Rage)
Cassie Gogreve, South Carolina (O.C. Batbusters)
Krissy Mihm, Cal State, Northridge (SoCal Sliderz)
Katie McWhirter, UCSB

Their travel teams are in "( )". All claim to be "18U-Gold" teams but the O.C.Batbusters and SoCal Sliderz are the only 2 that were of the 64 at Nationals. In fact, the O.C. Batbusters won it all last year and you see their players scattered around the country at the elite college softball programs. Example: the AZ pitcher in tonight's college world series championship was a Batbuster (as well as a bunch of other players from both teams, AZ and TN). The O.C. Batbusters have won more national championships than anyone, and their coach is viewed as the "Dean of Softball" internationally.

I believe South Carolina, and Missouri are the ranked college softball programs.

Are there any others from this list who are Div. 1 scholarship softball players?

Toni Beaston is the best shortstop in the San Gabriel Valley. She is going to play at Long Beach and should dominate.

anonymous said:

Tonilyn Beaston has played travel ball for a couple of years Now I understand she is off to college. I'm looking forward to Friday night to see her play and all the rest of these great softball players.
Good Luck Seniors !!!!

Anonymous said:

If she is as good as you say she is, she should find her way on to a quality travel team ASAP, because this is actually a good time to get picked up by teams that have lost recruits for one reason or another. A late, quality short stop can find a way if they are willing to play travel for the summer.

Anonymous said:

What travel team does she play for?

Anonymous said:

I hate to tell you but if she isn't signed by now. There is not a lot of scholarship money left with most schools.

Anonymous said:

what club team does she play for

anonymous said:

I heard that Tonilyn was asked my Oklahoma,Colorado,
Texas, I haven't heard where she has chosen to go but I heard she wants to stay in So. Ca. that is what I heard but I do not know her, but that is what my daughter said who plays for Monrovia.

Anonymous said:

Wow her arm is one of the best in Southern California? Where is she going to play college?

anonymous said:

you're right Tonilyn's arm is one of the best in Southern Ca , I hope everyone can go and watch her on Friday.

anonymous said:

Fred,

I didn't see Toni Beastons name in the paper but she's on the website list? Was this just an oversite?
I sure hope she's playing Friday. Heck of a ball player. Probable has the strongest arm on either side Public or Private.

Why not playing it at the Glendale Sports Complex. There are 3 softball fields all next to each other and there is a great Snack Bar with plenty of parking. I think the best time is pre-league play and best time to do it would be a Fri., Sat., and Sun in March. For it to be at the GSC, it would probably need to be booked now.

The problem is that most teams set their schedule at least a year ahead of time so this tournament would have to be planned almost two years ahead of time. Also most quality teams are already at the limit in the amount of games they can play so they can't add more games on top of what they already have. Teams generally confirm their participation in tournaments and send in money for the following year as soon as they are done playing in it.

Also teams in the same league generally do not want to see each other more than they have to and if they do they probably will pitch their #2 pitcher.

Also some of the schools you mentioned have no desire to face tougher competition in non-league play than they have to. They know they are going to win their league games so they do not want better non-league competition to taint their record.

You may think about following some of the better teams to their out of the area non-league tournaments and see who is really challenging themselves.

I've been wanting a Star-News invitational type tournament for area teams in several sports, like boys and girls soccer, baseball and softball, but the time element involved during the season is difficult. I'm sure its doable though. The baseball elks tournament is virtually a Star-News area showcase of the WSGV's best teams, and I would love our paper to jump on board and become a sponsor of it..
Softball needs a good local tournament, the closest we have to one is in Duarte. I would love to see a tournament with Monrovia, Arcadia, South Pas, Alverno, Poly, Gabrielino, Temple City, and other private schools. Where could it be played around here? You probably need two schools to host it, but if someone got the ball rolling, we'd cover the heck out of it...

This Seniors game is great for the kids ... Fred, thanks for getting it going last year and continuing it this year.

Another idea ... how about the Pasadena Star News sponsoring an inter-league tournament next March with a broad cross-section of teams from the area. Aside from being fun for the kids. Also, it will certainly quiet alot of the ranking questions.

What do you think Fred? Will you spear-head it and I'm sure you'll get volunters to step-up and help you now and start promoting it and locasl teams committing to it.

anonymous said:

Thanks, Fred:

This Senior game is a great idea for many reasons! (I think it is a misnomer to refer to it as an "ALLSTAR" game though).

Perhaps it will become an annual tradition and the Star News could have a naming contest?

Good luck to all and have a great time! Remember we will NEVER see any of these young ladies play HS softball again.(For many it will be their LAST softball game ever)!

Thanks for the memories,

The private schools don't recruit.

Fred
I think that's a great idea about the girls and where they played at there high school so that fans can give them the "seniors"
a great send off .even if they don't go on to college or play ball it would still be nice to let them know they were thought of for what they did in high school

Anonymous said:

people obviously do not have a clue what this game is about, it is for players who are seniors, and in some cases will not be playing college softball, the schools, mentioned were invited last year and turned the opportunity to play down to play and with conflicting days of graduation for seniors this is about the only day it can be played. As I recall last year the public schools were suppose to kill the private school and it turned out to be a 2 - 2 tie. People take a chill pill

Anonymous said:

Why would they?

Anonymous said:

how come no one is hosting boys all star volleyball game???

Anonymous said:

Hey I think thats a great idea, a little program flyer to hand out to the fans. Who is annoucing the game, oh please dont tell me its that old Bird again man he is annoying!

anonymous said:

Fred
how about doing a little bio on these girls so some of us can follow what position they played and what college if any they've committed to and are they going to play softball...

Anonymous said:

The public schools should win easily, with this roster. Just think if they also had Krissy and Katie.

Anonymous said:

No The Public team Should not win, They WILL win

Anonymous said:

No The Public team Should not win, They WILL win

Anonymous said:

does no one realize that the public school SHOULD win? think about how many more girls they have to choose from...

JQ said:

Who is talking about Leanna St Angelo. I have known Leanna for many years and I can asure you she is worthy to play in the all star game. She is great Defensive player and she can play virtually every position. If anyone wants to fight that, hit me up!

Anonymous said:

Whatever everyone here is clueless but when the Public wins 10-0 I wont say told you so.
There is no match up!

Anonymous said:

if you go player for player, the public team is extremely better. the private team needs to come up with a strategy to be able to hang in there. if not, this game could get ugly

anonymous said:

There are some great girls on these 2 teams. It's a shame but that night there is like a ton of different senior things going on..

TOLOG 07 said:

Anonymous at 10:46, stop trying to bring others down because you didn't make the team. Your negative attitude is making this thread disappointing and childish.

go private team!

Anonymous said:

I believe this team is a combination of all 4 years for these seniors. Leanna St. Angelo has been a varsity starter for 4 years at Rosemead and was a dominate force in leading them into the CIF Semifinals. Let the kids have some fun

Anonymous said:

Westridge has graduation at the same time as the game. Also please follow Fred's advice - don't take the game too seriously and let the seniors, coaches and fans fully enjoy the experience. It should be be a great time just like the Star News/Tribune basketball game was at APU a couple of months ago.

FredJ said:

Calm down, this is fun game, a reward for all these seniors. Because of senior days, graduations, prior commits, etc, some seniors from private school teams were not available, and I can assure you this is a competitive team that will battle the public.
Please, do not attack the kids or coaches with these juvenile comments.

Anonymous said:

Ok Leanna St Angleo has anyone seen her Hit. No one from Rosemead except Armenta. And Chanel Buccola What did she bat .100, This sounds Fixed who picked these kids. good Luck Private school team because you are going to get Creamed.
And the coaches on both sides are Jokes!

The selections are clearly one sided. What about kids from Ramona, Cantwell, and Westridge.

Anonymous said:

No Parada because it's a senior all-star game. She's a junior.

FredJ said:

All-star games are for seniors only.

Coach Williams left Mission because they saw his true value. He replaced Tibbits at FSHA, who overstayed his welcome as well. It's a shame these private schools can't get real coaches that know what their doing. Case in point, Coach Russo. What a waste of time to those poor Alverno players. He has really overstayed his welcome. He and his blundering assistants, all over 60 years of age. Those players can't possibly get any real instruction. I bet Russo can't even touch his toes, let alone lift a bat or throw a ball. He most likely leads by yelling and not by example. That's the real tragedy. I bet he lives off the one championship his team won and no thanks to him or his coaching staff. "Can you say pitching." He seems like such a shallow coach, he probably hangs around ballpark after ballpark looking for pitching and promising girls a great education and a possible championship. Williams and Russo need to give up coaching softball, neither coach has anything to do with their teams being successful. How can they be expected to coach a bunch of all-stars?

anonymous said:

who on the private school list is a pitcher ???
I think they missed alot of great players, and I think they are some on the public that should not be on the list and what happened to prada well I do understand there is only enough room for so manyu players. and public already shows 3 great players

Jim M. said:

I think Kristen Oechsel should have made the squad from La Canada.

boo

anonymous said:

Where are all the Private school "recruits" many were claiming exist all season??

Makes one rethink "proper" Division placement once again. Those bigger public Rio Hondo League schools should be moved up at least to D4 if not D3!

Anonymous said:

Who the heck is going to pitch for the private team???

Did the lousey FSHA pick this team with 4 FSHA players on it?

The only one that is even close to being a legitimate All-star is Poet!!!

Actually she's much better than legitimate ... she's excellent!!! But the other 3 aren't even close to All-stars!!!

Anonymous said:

are there are nude pics of this cover shot?

Anonymous said:

Hard to believe for anyone in area Little League circles, the FSHA coach is even a poorer coach than he is a poor umpire. The sad thing is, that coach promotes himself as a softball expert ... watch him coach and you'll see he's far from it! Granted, the only FSHA game I saw this season was the Alverno game in the Duarte Tournament (Fred did you see any of their other FSHA games?) and the FSHA victory over Alverno was in spite of the FSHA coach and their victory had everything to do with a couple of players. I have seen some of their players play on other teams over the years and there is some real talent. The FSHA program significantly underperformed this year, especially given the level of some of their player talent. They were the poorest coached team in the area, and their coach was a joke amongst his players! ... well, at least Coach Russo will be there to make it somewhat respectable!

FredJ said:

Relax, if there was a private school tournament just among the Star-News area private teams, you would have probably watched an Alverno and FSHA championship game.

Anonymous said:

To make the FSHA coach the coach of any all-star is a total joke.
