Pasadena victorious at San Bernardino tournament:
Pasadena, which reached the semifinals of the Crescenta Valley Tournament, beat Fontana A.B. Miller in the championship game to win the first annual 26-team San Bernardino Tournament of Champions June 23. The Bulldogs went undefeated in the two-day event.
"We were really focused on this tournament," Bulldogs coach Kevin Mills said. "Nothing can replace a positive championship mindset."
To get to the finals, the Bulldogs earned victories over 2006 Central Division champion Colony and Ettiwanda, which reached the second round of the Indland Division playoffs..
Pasadena reached the semifinals of the third annual Bulldog Passing Tournament on July 7 at Victory Park.
With a stingy defense, the Bulldogs could be a team to watch in 2007.
Walker leading Arcadia:
Arcadia High School will be back in passing league action against San Marino on July 5.

Above: Kevan Walker will be a receiver in college, but the Apaches need a quarterback, and he might be it.

Above: This story from ABC News is disturbing. A 40-year-old track coach wedding his 16-year-old student? How is this happening, and should police have stepped in sooner? Unfortunately, the parents gave in and agreed to sign a consent form to allow the marriage. The lesson here, don't give in to your children. Continue harassing police, school administrators, and if that doesn't work, go to the media. Never sign a consent that is not in the best interest of your child. Even so, a consent form should not be a "get out of jail free card" for sexual predators.

North Carolina - - The Hagers are trying to figure out how life went off track for their teenage daughter, Windy.
They envisioned that life for the good student and promising athlete would be filled with dreams of the prom and college, but that all changed this week when Windy, 16, married her high school track coach.

BALDWIN PARK - La Salle High School coach Ealar Gallagher hopes his football team can pick up where it left off in 2006.
Anything will be better than how the Lancers started off the season.
La Salle opened last season with five consecutive losses - the last one a 52-19 blowout at the hands of Monrovia.
The Lancers, however, rebounded with eight consecutive victories, including a 35-28 victory at Monrovia in the Mid Valley Division quarterfinals, to reach the championship game against eventual champion Verbum Dei.
On Tuesday, La Salle traveled to Baldwin Park for seven-on-seven scrimmages against Baldwin Park, Gladstone and Walnut.

Here is Scott Galetti's report from the Crescenta Valley passing tournament.
Alhambra sharp despite being shorthanded:
Alhambra is licking its chops as it prepares for the 2007 season.
The Moors dropped their first-round elimination game to Crescenta Valley with a JV quarterback and some players missing because of commitments to play in a baseball tournament.
But that won’t put a damper on the team’s excitement about the upcoming season.
Alhambra posted a 7-4-1 record in 2006 and finished in a three-way tie for the Almont League championship.
The Moors went into the CIF-Southern Section Southeast Division playoffs at the league’s top team and advanced to the second round.
Running back Anthony Brown returns for his senior season.
Brown rushed for 1,058 yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior.
He will have some big bodies to run behind.
“I think we’re going to be strong because we have one of the biggest lines we’ve had in years,” Alhambra assistant coach Steve Castro said.
Senior linebacker Robert Olivarez returns to lead the Moors defense and will vie for the quarterback spot.
“We just hope that he can go both ways,” Castro said.

Above: Alhambra's quick-footed Anthony Brown.
Bulldogs display quickness:
Pasadena earned wins over Saugus and Valencia to advance to the semifinals.
The Bulldogs did so with a quick, ball-hawking type defense that has Mills excited.
“Our defense is awesome because we have a lot of speed,” Pasadena coach Kevin Mills said.
Senior cornerback Tyron Crockom returns as one of the Bulldogs top players on defense along with senior cornerback/wide receiver Arness Ikner.
Crockom, who threw for 2,050 yards and 20 touchdowns last season, appeared comfortable in the seven-on-seven situation.
While I'm on vacation, Scott Galetti will be busy reporting on several passing leagues throughout the summer, and will share his scouting report with you. Covering passing leagues isn't something we've had the staff to do in the past, but Galetti is on board and he's fired up about his summer duties.
One of the most intriguing quarterback prospects in 2007 is Arcadia's Kevan Walker, and coach Jon Dimalante was kind enough to share his spring evaluation of the soon to be senior, who has given a verbal commitment to Minnesota, but also has been offered a scholarship from UCLA, where his father is the defensive coordinator

Above: Walker will be a receiver in college, but the Apaches need a quarterback, and he might be it."
"Right now Kevan's our starting quarterback, and Forrest Reed is his back-up," Dimalante said. "Kevan's athletic, he has a good arm, he's got great football instincts and he gives us so many options in the backfield that we haven't had in the past. He's dangerous anytime the balls in his hands, and he's going to give opposing defenses a lot to think about. He's also still learning the position, but he seems to be a quick learner. We'll learn a lot more during the summer as he continues to grow."
The Apaches' summer passing league schedule is as follows: June 19 @ San Marino; June 21 @ Arroyo; July 5 @ San Marino; July 10 @ Temple City; July 17 @ La Canada; July 19 @ Arroyo; July 24 @ La Canada; and July 26 @ Arroyo.
QUESTION: What other quarterbacks do you expect to shine in 2007. Who are the locks, sleepers and up-and-comers?

ABOVE: Muir players enjoying some fun under the sun.
La Salle's summer passing league schedule is as follows:
June 19 @ Baldwin Park; June 21 @ Hacienda Heights Wilson; June 26 @ Crescenta Valley; June 28 @ Arroyo; July 3 @ Baldwin Park; July 5 @ Arroyo; July 10 @ Claremont; July 12 vs. So. Pasadena @ La Salle, 5 p.m.; July 17 vs. San Gabriel @ La Salle, 5 p.m.
We'll have more on this tomorrow, but I would like to congratulate Eddie on his great career at Monrovia and wish him well with the Angels. It had to be a tough decision to forgo a college career a UNLV to sign with a Big League club, but what a great decision to have to make. I'm sure he'll do well, competitors like him always do.

The Rams will formally announce on Wednesday the hiring of defensive coordinator Randy Backus to succeed Mike Mooney, who is moving on to become an assistant principal at San Marino High School. Backus, a graduate of La Verne, will be starting his 14th year with the Rams, where he has been part of four Rio Hondo League titles.
Backus reaction:
“I’m extremely excited to continue with the great tradition of Temple City football. There’s a few jobs in Southern California high school football where the name is associated with successful football like Bishop Amat, Charter Oak, Hart and Mission Viejo, and Temple City is one of them.”
“The standard has been set and I don’t expect a drop off,” Backus continued. “Our attention to detail and our work ethic will reflect in the product on the field.”
AD John VanDeVeere's reaction:
“He brings quite a few years of experience and he knows the tradition of Temple City football and what we expect of our coaches and players,” VanDeVeere said. He’s very familiar with Temple City football and I’m excited for him to have the opportunity to take over there. I think it’s something he deserves.”

Mark your calendars for Thursday, Oct. 18, when Loyola heads to St. Francis for the showdown at Friedman Field. I love that it's on a Thursday, the whole area should turn out for this one. Why has it taken so long for these two schools to knock helmets. Does anyone know the last time they played. It should be special, talk about a tug-of-war for the area's best talent. We will discuss Loyola on the blog this fall. There are enough Star-News area kids to include the Cubs in our discussions, and I'll start with this: Who has the better football program, and why is one more attractive than the other? Who's going to have a better 2007 season, and who's going to win this game?

Besides missing the teachers, his coaching peers and his students, Pasadena Poly athletic director Chuck Ellis says he will miss the simple things as he enters retirement after 27 years at the school.
Following Ellis' retirement celebration tonight at Poly's Garland Theatre, Ellis and his wife Rebecca will begin the process of moving to their new home in Heber Valley, near Park City, Utah, where they will be close to their five children and 12 grandchildren.

Brian Esquival has been named as the new head varsity baseball coach at St. Francis High School. Esquival has been an assistant for the past two years under Mike Solar, who resigned at the end of the season.

Baseball: June 19
Softball: June 20
Boys track: June 21
Girls track: June 22

Hope you all have a great vacation, and thanks to all the athletes, coaches and blog contributors who made the 2006-07 season special. And to the seniors, best wishes in your future endeavors.
Below: Besides golf, this is what we do on Prep break.

They tell me I've got to take a vacation for a few weeks starting on Monday, and will be back the week of July 6 for the Hall of Fame football game at Bassett High School. But this blog isn't going anywhere, it's all football, all the time until the fall, with weekly and sometimes bi-weekly threads. Tell us what's going on in spring and summer workouts, and what you've observed and who's standing out. I'll follow up on your tips as much as I can, and provide you with what I Iearn.

Rams opening: On the Temple City coaching search, I've learned that longtime assistant coach Randy Backus is interested in taking over the top spot for Mooney, and that the Rams hope to have someone in place soon. Does anyone know who else has applied or is interested?

Above: Wells making a catch against St. Paul
Rumors: The latest making its rounds around the SGV is that Bishop Amat stud receiver/quarterback Dorian Wells could wind up at Monrovia High School. Wildcats coach Steve Garrison has heard the rumors, but that's all they're, just rumors for now.
Garrison on spring workouts: "We had about 80 kids turn out for spring practice, and we thought it would wiggle down, but we've still got 80 kids. We have a group that won as freshman and on the junior varsity and feel really good about them. On the quarterback situation, junior Matt Haggart has looked good. He's 6-3 and 200 pounds and has improved his strength. He's a real intelligent kid who throws the ball well."

Side note: La Canada's Lavelle Peterson will compete in Sunday's (June 10) East-West All-Star football game at Birmingham High School @ 3:30 p.m. He will be wearing No. 21.
Finally: During the summer, I'd like to start a top ten list for players at their position, quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, etc. If there's anyone you want us to discuss, blog it here.

Was it La Salle's magical win over Monrovia and march to the divisional championship?

Or Maranatha's surprising run to the divisional finals?

And don't forget the "The Roledator," who led Pasadena to its first CIF girls volleyball title.

WINTER 2006-07
There was Pasadena bringing home the shcool's fourth title, and first since 1995 with a 79-63 victory over St. Bernard in the CIF-SS Division II-AA championship at the Honda Center.

And there was La Salle, finally fulfilling its promise of a girls soccer title.

The connection is good, and the game is on ...
7:01 Eddie McKiernan is starting, Monrovia is the visiting team and Curtis Cowell is hit by the second pitch from Amat pitcher Maverick Olivares..
Monrovia 1st: With Cowell on first and one out, McKiernan grounds into double play at short, 0 runs, 0 hits, 1 left.
Amat 1st: Jordan Fox legged out a single to leadoff the first inning, and Sergio Munoz's sacrafice bunt moved him to second. After a wild pitch from McKiernan moved Fox to third, Chris Eusebio singled up the middle to bring in Fox, giving Amat a 1-0 lead. One run, two hits, one left.
Monrovia 2nd: The Wildcats came right back in the top of the second inning following singles from Erik Allen and Patrick Greene, who moved to second and third respectively following Vice Vega's ground out. Clint Fraijo followed with a single to left, scoring Allen, to tie the score, 1-1. However, the Wildcats left the bases loaded, with Cowell grounding out to short to end the inning. Cable guy Reg Miller looks here and says Cowell beat the throw at first...
Amat 2nd: Andrew Mistone led off with a single and was on third with two outs, but McKiernan ended the inning with a vicious curveball to strikeout Kevin Bonilla. Still tied, 1-1.
Monrovia 3rd: With two outs and McKiernan on second, Greene belted his second hit of the game to right, scoring McKiernan for a 2-1 lead.
Amat 3rd: That Wildcats' lead didn't last long, and they were fortunate only to go down 3-2 after a heads up play by shorstop Vince Vega. After Fox's lead double, Munoz bunted back to McKiernan, whose throw to third was late, leaving runners on first and third. Olivares followed with a high pop-up behind third that Vega ran down and dove to make a play on. Fox appeared to tag and score, but Vega rushed over to tag third, and sure enough, Fox was called out for leaving early. However, Amat answered with back-to-back two-out doubles by Eusebio and Tommy Reyes, scoring two runs for a 3-2 lead.
Monrovia 4th: Wildcats go down in order, still trail, 3-2.
Amat 4th: Amat's hitting barrage continued. Fox slammed his second double and third hit of the game to right, scoring Brian Seymour. Sergio Munoz follows with another double to right, scoring Fox, and Olivares singles up the middle, driving in Munoz to give Amat a 6-2 lead. That was it for McKiernan, who gave way to lefty Richard Kilbury after allowing five doubles and 11 hits. Amat added another run to go up, 7-2.
Monrovia 5th : McKiernan and Allen belt two-out singles, but they're left stranded.
Amat 5th: Cats finally stop bleeding, hold Lancers scoreless.
Monrovia 6th The Cats load the bases with two walks and a hit, knocking out starter Maverick Olivares with one out. Chris Eusebio into pitch. The Cats score twice, but leave the bases loaded. Amat still leads, 7-4.
Amat 6th: Kilbury sends them down in order, we go to the seventh.
Monrovia 7th: Greene leads off with a walk. Vega walks, first and second, no outs. Cats ground into a 5-4-3 double-play, Greene on third. Greene scores on pass ball, 7-5.
Gamer over ... Amat wins it.

Our track specialist Andrew Campa is in Sacramento this weekend for the state championships. For up to the minute results, click on this link below
http://cifstate.org/

Below: Muir's Kiani Profit was amazing at last week's Masters meet, winning the 100 and 300-meter hurdles titles. She's hoping the last high school meet of her career can end with at least one state title this weekend in Sacramento.

SACRAMENTO - It was no surprise who were the top area standouts at Friday's CIF-State Track and Field preliminaries at Sacramento City College.
Muir High School's Kiani Profit rebounded from a disappointing performance in the girls 100 hurdles (10th place, 14.23) by easily cruising to a victory in her heat of the girls 300 hurdles (43.06). The senior's time was fourth-best overall.
"I didn't run as well as I did last week," said Profit, who qualified for the 300 hurdles in State last year. "Experience counts a little bit. But you also have to have the drive for it and talent. You can't win without either."
Profit had the near-impossible assignment of running in the same heat with top 100 hurdler Dahlys Marshall of Valley Christian.
Marshall won her heat with a time of 13.71, fourth best overall.
"I have run against her for a long time," Profit said. "I try not to focus on other people, just myself. But I have to give her credit. She's great."
Profit will conclude her prep career today at 7:05 p.m. in the 300 hurdles, looking for that elusive State title.
In another final attempt, Division I 110 hurdles champion Zion Babb of Alhambra will have one last opportunity to
beat long-time rival Terry Prentice of Diamond Ranch today at 5:59 p.m.
The Moors' lone representative claimed his heat and fourth place in his competition with a time of 14.06.
"He's getting better and better every week," Alhambra coach Jerry DeSantis said. "Health-wise, he seems to be in good shape."
Also in good standing is fellow Almont League runner Kevin Lau of Schurr. Proving his finishes at the CIF-Southern Section Divisionals and Masters were no fluke, the Spartans senior finished in seventh in the boys 300 hurdles with a time of 38.13.
"Today, just knowing that you're at State just gives you the will to push even harder," Lau said. "It makes me feel good that I even got this far."
Lau is scheduled to compete at 7:13 p.m. today.
Another seventh place showing was turned in by Muir's Jalisa Williams in the girls 100 hurdles (14.10). The senior, who has been battling nagging injuries for most of the season, finished second in her heat.
"The competition is pretty big," said Williams, who is scheduled to run today at 5:48 p.m.
"You know that everybody you're running against is the best in California. I was just trying to make it to the finals."
Even though Rosemead's Jesus Correa had somewhat of an average performance in his competition, the boys shot put, the senior still had enough (55 feet, 6 inches) to advance to today's final at 6 p.m.
Unlike last week's CIF-SS Masters competition, Correa had to rebound from a bad first throw to qualify.
Loyola scores nine runs in the eighth inning to pull out an 11-5 victory, winning its school's first baseball title since 1954
