FOOTBALL: Summer passing leagues heating up

Pasadena victorious at San Bernardino tournament:
Pasadena, which reached the semifinals of the Crescenta Valley Tournament, beat Fontana A.B. Miller in the championship game to win the first annual 26-team San Bernardino Tournament of Champions June 23. The Bulldogs went undefeated in the two-day event.
"We were really focused on this tournament," Bulldogs coach Kevin Mills said. "Nothing can replace a positive championship mindset."
To get to the finals, the Bulldogs earned victories over 2006 Central Division champion Colony and Ettiwanda, which reached the second round of the Indland Division playoffs..
Pasadena reached the semifinals of the third annual Bulldog Passing Tournament on July 7 at Victory Park.
With a stingy defense, the Bulldogs could be a team to watch in 2007.

Walker leading Arcadia:
Arcadia High School will be back in passing league action against San Marino on July 5.

Above: Kevan Walker will be a receiver in college, but the Apaches need a quarterback, and he might be it.

It was just one of those things where getting photos didn't work out.

Hey Scott,

Whatever happened to an earlier request for some passing league photos?

ScottG said:

La Salle, South Pasadena and Arcadia hooked up at La Salle on Thursday. Walker looked impressive at QB, as did Rettig for La Salle.
South Pasadena has some good receivers and could be an interesting team.

what happened with la salle and arcadia? How about the other local schools... san marino, poly, maranatha,? has anyone heard about their summer?

BigA said:

Arcadia at La Salle tomorrow...3 o clock?

south pasadena plays la salle in a passing league game tomorrow, should be interesting, south pas looks like it may have some talent this year.

Frank P said:

keep us updated on the golden knights sfhs92.

how do the knights plan on replacing the beef like roxas and carter?

sfhs '97 said:

A little update on Saint Francis' summer passing league activity. SF killed Morningside in a San Diego tournament and finished 2nd. Tomorrow the golden knights host a 4 team passing league meeting. Canyon, the defending D1 state champ, will be there so we will see where this year's golden knights match up against the best.

ScottG said:

Pasadena finished in the semifinals, losing to Morningside.

Any news from the PHS passing league tournament today?

Jim M said:

Wheeler is in Sweeden D.U.I. Dave.

Anonymous said:

You have no idea how good Wheeler can move with the two new wheels. He was straight Krumping.

AA said:

Jim M (DragosQueen),
It looks like you fell off the wagon if you saw Wheeler at the Mix last night. I would try to get back on carefuly so that you don't hurt yourself.

Prep FB Realist said:

Galetti,

How about some photos of passing league? I would like to see what's going on. Thanks.

DragosQueen said:

Witnesses saw Richy Wheeler studying his new play book a local bar "The Mix" until the weee hours of the night last night. You get um Richy.

ہ said:

Can someone convince Lisa Kelley, younger sister of Sean and Traci Kelley, to take on the PK job for the next couple football seasons? Without a doubt I am sure she can fill the shoes of the kicking position with a little practice and it'd be great to have a third Kelley kicking the ball for the wildcats. I personally would not see it as being a shadow to her older siblings but an opportunity to possibly make history.

In other news, does anyone know of the Lady Wildcats new basketball coach? After Coach Wagner resigned after the team's banquet, I have not heard of any news in the coaching vacancy.

SPathlete said:

no im pretty sure that he singned with them however he signed late around the month of may or so but as far as i know he signed with them

Dragosqueen said:

I've heard the genius of Rich Wheeler's new offense is amazing and the biggest change in the pure genius of Wheeler's new offense is the focus on going in motion twice this year and not once like last year. Rumour also has it the Richy is going to work very hard so the second string kicker isn't the only player to say something nice about him at the team banquet. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, after much thought Wheeler may hike the ball on two at least once this year. Wheeeeeeeeeeeee.

Bayou vol said:

I just checked the OSU spring prospectus and Parrish was not listed as a signee...is he a walk-on? THanks for the info!

SPathlete said:

I'm pretty sure that Josh Parish is going to Oregon State and that Connor Berry will be attending Chapman University

Bayou vol said:

BTW...does anyone know where Josh Parrish and Connor Berry will be playing next year? Also, any late news re: RHL platers and where they will be in the fall? depth charts, redshirts, etc.?

bayou vol said:

I think the road games could be a factor, but SoPas usually travels fairly well, especially if they work out a deal with some of the schools to let SPHS students in for free with a SAC card. What about LC, SM, and Blair? Any news? I would love to see SoPas make a run for league. Too bad they folded after LC last year. I just don't know if the Tigers have the balance to match Monrovia and TC...as they say down here, GEAUX TIGERS.

Aging Tiger said:

Parish and Berry were a loss for sure, but the O-line should be better (hopefully because you’re right, very hard to throw on your back). Receivers are always a concern of course but they seem like they are gaming up. Anyway, not saying SP is going to be great, just that the loss of players won’t hurt as much as some might think. They’ll be playing eight games on the road though, that could be a factor.

GloucesterCoach said:

Observant, NY, All Monrovia Peeps,

Do you guys think this kid should start as a Freshman? It sounds like Haggard is ready to fill in pretty nicely. I would put Josiah on JV to get him ready for a solid Sophomore year on Varsity.

Aging Tiger,
Although I would love to see the Tigers have a great season, I'm thinking having a good QB will only get us so far. The Tigers graduated a lot of solid skill players, Parish, Berry, Flynn...also, I don't think South Pas has been grooming any hosses to block for this kid. A QB can't do too much if he is on his back.

Observantcat said:

He is pretty much a model student as well. You need to be smart confident and in control at all times to become a good QB...I think he is just what Monrovia has always needed with the speed they posses. Plus he's a very clever running QB as well. What's more amazing is his accuracy under pressure.

New York said:

O-Cat,
I hope this kid's parents keep him on a tight leash and encourage him to make good grades and SAT scores. We don't need to add to the list of promising area athletes that did not take care of business all the way around.
That said, I can't wait to see this kid play.

DAWG said:

Desmond Reed played four years in Varsity @ T.C.

Observantcat said:

I think this kid will fit into any program with his size and his skill level and I think by the time he is a Jr. He will be That QB circulating around the D1 schools. His Parents are 100% behind him and it shows in his confidence.

Anonymous said:

Any player under 15 needs special parent consent. Dietrich was only 14 when he played on varsity last year.

Aging Tiger said:

Big A,

SP may have graduated players but at the B2G camp this weekend (according to Scout.com)…

“South Pasadena (Calif.) quarterback Jonathan Troast had a good showing in the early (Friday) session” and on Saturday “continued his good weekend, throwing nice passes and threading the needle on numerous occasions.”

Last year’s camp was attended by Zion Babb, David Potts and James Davis.

Keep an eye on South Pas.

Frank P said:

i think its more of an age issue. i think you have to be 15 yrs old.

if you remember, last year, the riley kid at st francis was a freshman.

GloucesterCoach said:

I thought it was against CIF rules for Freshman to play Varsity football?

Observantcat said:

New York

Since it was just mentioned in the paper on Friday the name Josiah Thropay is going to be playing in the minds of not just the Rio Hondo league but the rest of the LA county as well. This Kid is Phenomenal and he is only a freshman, I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes a true starter at QB as a Freshman at MHS (Monrovia High School). I've seen this Kid play his entire pop Warner years and took the Duarte team to the Pop Warner Super Bowl. He is a very Gifted Athlete and Will only get better with time. Glad his Parents decided to let him come to MHS instead of the Hounding that Bishop Amat was giving him.

Once in a life-time chance to be a part of the Hall of Fame All-Star game and to be a part of the dream team like the West makes it even more interesting.

Good luck to Coach Joel Murphy and the rest of the coaching staff.

No such thing as "dont have many linemen." There are always more than enough linemen at the High School level. Any program can produce LINE-Skill positions. The program does not start in August to look for the linemen, it starts right after the final game the previous season. The heart of a team starts at the LINE.

BigA said:

For some reason that doesn't surprise me that Pasadena would win then. Let's see them play some top competition.

Bayou Vol said:

Anybody have any EARLY thoughts on the RHL? I know SoPas graduated a lot of their skill players, but how do the "other 4" (SP, SM, LC, Blair) in the RHL look going into summer?

New York said:

Big A,

AB Miller was the second high school in Fontana and Kaiser the third, I believe. I think they prefer to stay between the tackles.

How's Temple City football looking this year?

Anonymous said:

time for a new kevan walker photo. i can't believe a publication like pasadena star news doesn't have a camera!

BigA said:

Is the tournament that Pasadena competed in having any talent? Fontana AB Miller? I have never heard of that school.

fan of the greatest game said:

Hey linemen are a skilled position. a great linemen is worth his weight in gold.

the real hsfbfan said:

Pasadena will be a interesting story this year although I don't think they will go very far because they don't have many linemen. Every kid wants to play a skilled position.
