FOOTBALL: Will La Salle pick up where it left off in 2007?

Above: Now that Matt Kohorst has moved on, who will be the Lancers' starting quarterback, Chase Rettig or Ryan Doeppel?

Reporter Scott Galetti caught up with La Salle at a recent Passing League tournament.
BALDWIN PARK - La Salle High School coach Ealar Gallagher hopes his football team can pick up where it left off in 2006.
Anything will be better than how the Lancers started off the season.
La Salle opened last season with five consecutive losses - the last one a 52-19 blowout at the hands of Monrovia.
The Lancers, however, rebounded with eight consecutive victories, including a 35-28 victory at Monrovia in the Mid Valley Division quarterfinals, to reach the championship game against eventual champion Verbum Dei.
On Tuesday, La Salle traveled to Baldwin Park for seven-on-seven scrimmages against Baldwin Park, Gladstone and Walnut.

Gallagher was pleased with what he saw.
With the departure of Matt Kohorst, the Lancers are looking to fill the void at the quarterback position.
Sophomore Chase Rettig is the leading candidate with last year's backup, Ryan Doeppel, waiting in the wings.
Rettig played on the JV team last season and has the tools to succeed.
"He's got a good work ethic, a good strong arm and he's athletic," Gallagher said. "He has a lot to learn, but he's improving every day."
Gallagher's reasoning to look at Rettig ahead of Doeppel is simple.
"I think Ryan can do a fine job at quarterback, but he can do so many things for us," Gallagher said. "He's going to help out the defense a lot."
Doeppel will also play wide receiver, where he caught 12 passes for 111 yards.
Wide receiver David Baier, an All-CIF Mid Valley Division selection, returns for his senior season.
Baier had 30 catches for 402 yards and six touchdowns. He also carried the ball 191 times for 1,218 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Michael Palffy leads the Lancers defense. Palffy had four interceptions and 36 total tackles.
He will be joined in the secondary by Doeppel, who had an interception against Walnut, and Joey Reaume.
Reaume had 27 tackles as a junior in 2006.
Gallagher is also expecting a big season from sophomore cornerback/free safety Marcus Wells.
The Lancers coach is excited about the school fielding three levels - varsity, JV and freshmen - for the first time in school history.

Big A,
Wake up buddy. Football and Academics are not great at your school. If they were students and atheletes from Arcadia would not be leaving to go play at private schools.

I'm tired and my secretary is not here to proff my writing. Please forgive the sentence error.

New York said:

Sorry Big A. With an enrollment north of 3,500, Arcadia is the type of place where a kid can get lost.I think Monrovia offers a superior experience. How many kids are dual sport athletes does Arcadia have? And I'm talking about Quizbowl decathletes!

Anonymous, how big of a check can you write? I think LaSalle's tuition is reasonable. Can you commute to LA? Loyola is strong. Poly's tuition is steep, but the reputation is stellar. There is always's Finchamp's plug for Rio Hondo Prep, a real throw-back school where it is impossible for a kid to get lost.

BigA said:

If your looking for a public program look no further than Arcadia. Football is great, academics are great as well as the whole athletics program other than basketball. If you want an all-around school, look no further.

Anonymous said:

what do you think about La Salle's overall sports programs. I'll be looking for a high school next year for a son who plays basketball and football. Any thoughts?

New York said:

I forsee LaSalle turning into the San Marino of the late 1980's and early 1990's, maybe even better. It all depends how committed their admissions office is.

Anonymous said:

i'd say san marino is a little more than dying. nothing against the school, the football team just hasn't had it the past few years

Football said:

I would not say that La Salle is an old power in football, the school has only had football for just over 10 years. I would say if anything they are growing whether it may be at the small level they are still getting better with every year. The old powers that are dying are, SF, PHS, San Marino, and La Canada

Fred can we please have a blog about summer basketball. I've been to a few games and would love to hear what others think. Some old power house teams look really sad ( la salle, poly, san marino) is it me or do they really lack size, talent and skill?

bp grad said:

Just a comment about the individual who decided to put down Baldwin Park. Grow up and learn that not all people can be stereo-typed. I am a Baldwin Park graduate with a BA and a MA. Currently working on my PHD, and you want to say kids from BP sound stupid. I played football. The only ignorance comes from those that feel the need to lump everyone together. Please refrain from embarassing yourself any longer. Thank you

Coaches M and A teach good lessons to Monrovia linemen. There's no way the MTown Hawgs will be on here...Well, not current students anyway.

How many athletes are on this blog?(anonymous June 22 10:08) The answer is hardly any.Thats not the real #77. Its sad to even here the dumb remarks that Fred you have allowed spewed all over this BLOG.I understand this is a public forum for us fans to express our oppinions but give the real # 77 a break.Monrovia has a no nonsense rule about this blog NO PLAYER is allowed on here. With all the people who are starting to visit this site do you think the # 77 would take a chance in his senior year .I doubt it.Don't be so gullible people

you are so smart thank you for complimenting the language. No one cares about grammar or sentence structure on this site even though you think it is phenomenal

Anonymous said:

The spelling and grammar among the athletes on this blog are phenomenal. Do they not teach english, spelling, vocaulary and grammar in the Pasadena area? I thought the kids from Baldwin Park and Northview weren't real bright, but you guys take the cake. Good luck in your futures and please get my order right when I get to your window at McDonald's.
Sincerely,
educated people

fred,
I am surprised you condone the language and fight taunts coming from your blog. It is no wonder that people wonder if the bloods or crips are the official gang of pasadena-area football. JJimenez, I am pretty sure Murray knows he has a blog, but he still thinks Kennedy is president so take it easy on the old guy.

sorry man, but hating on a school doesn't make them get "smashed"

I love how these blogs always get out of hand, on here and along with the Tribune's version and almost never have anything to do with the original topic chosen by Aram or Fred.(I could include Whittier's edition as well, but I don't think that Murray guy even knows he has a blog)...ha.

I learned a long time ago that people judge you based upon how you present yourself. If you do not want people to judge you then present yourself in a manner so that people do not have the opportunity to judge you. Maybe this is "internet talk" but is is a public forum.

Something to consider.

By the way it is "gall" not "gaul." "Gaul" was the ancient name for what is now France. Also, it is "grammar" not "grammer."

Yes, I have a real job, which includes proofreading the many reports I write.

ok lets get one thing out there this is internet talk when i say da you guys just have to say something a bout monrovia kids being dumb dont you... its getting old dont you think!!!!! i dont need any grammer or spelling class if you must know i have a 3.2 gpa for all the people who think i cant spell #77 form "da" M-Town!! get at me awww see i did it... just one more dumb monrovia kid get real and get a job find something better to do "wit" "yo" time!!!!!!!

XanonymousX said:

I love how these retarded ADULTS are stupid enough to judge an entire school and team off of one player who isnt spectacular in grammar. Well I just think that its pretty pathetic for an adult or even a player from another team has the gaul to try and correct a player who just simply stated that his team is coming back for revenge this fall... Get over ur selves. And take it to DA HOOD M-TOWN... (lets all go nuts now that a monrovia student said DA) lol w/e

FredJ said:

Gallagher said the Lancers are fielding three teams, varsity, JV and freshman for the first time in school history. The is good news for the program. Just one year after a championship appearance and with Friday night games in the fall, it's obvious this program is drawing player interest.

goteamgo said:

Of all the teams that will play La Salle this year, the one I think La Salle did not want to see again was Monrovia, as they appear to have restocked and reloaded, and will be gunning for revenge. However, after seeing the writing example in the post from #77 below, I think most of Monrovia's team will be on academic probation by the time they play La Salle.

Back to the original question: 2007 will be a rebuilding year for the Lancers; 2008 will be their year. Losing 22 seniors will be hard to replace.

M Town- #77

1) Lineman dont talk crap they bring it.
2) Why are you really talking, you have no reason to.
3) Since your taking summer school over at M Town I pray to god that it is a grammer or spelling class.
4) I guess thats what type of players come out from M Town.
5) #77 if you are worthy of my time and I actually come out to see you please dont waste my money and suck. Wait i'll just come to Blair and Basset hopefully that would be a good opponet for you.

JJimenez said:

LOL...hahaha...yea what he said...(oh please)

I dont know about all of this talk about #77 not having any talent, he has enough talent to be an effective lineman for the wildcats... But speaking of the Wildcats I heard that they took a MAJOR hit by loosing possibly one of the best returning o-lineman in the league. He was going to be a senior this next season and supposedly a big part of the team, apperantly Garrison kicked him off of the team due to some undisclosed issues. I will post more as soon as I learn more.

He's listed at 5'8 305 on maxpreps. Had 13 tackles last season, a meer 2.5 a game.

Warren Sapp....Call him Baby Warren....His real name is Andrew King. His heart is as tough as his game......We love this Kid.

BigA said:

5'8 320 pounds? Sounds pretty athletic to me. =]

I believe Baier is the top player for La Salle. With their new sophomore quarterback being so young, I think his inexperience will hurt the Lancers throughout the season.

the real hsfbfan said:

Tc Player,

#77 doesn't need to be talented to play NG. He just needs to drop to his knees and grab turf. Dounts, ice cream, cookies, french fries, mayo...all good stuff for a nose tackle.

TC Player said:

I'd say he is 5'8'' 320 with a 7.2 40 time and not to mention, no talent. This isn't me talking s**t either unless the undoubted truth has suddenly become an unsupported premise for falsification.

the real hsfbfan said:

#77 is monrovia nose tackle that probably runs a 6.5 40 yards but that doesn't matter because he just clogs the line of scrimage anyway.

GoldenBear said:

lol, I hope you play football better than you spell, or else it's gonna be a boring game #77.

I wish well for the Lancers. Hope to see them beat eagle rock though, something I never got to do.
