FOOTBALL: Arcadia's Walker on display during the summer, and what other quarterbacks will stand out in 2007?

| | Comments (41) |

While I'm on vacation, Scott Galetti will be busy reporting on several passing leagues throughout the summer, and will share his scouting report with you. Covering passing leagues isn't something we've had the staff to do in the past, but Galetti is on board and he's fired up about his summer duties.
One of the most intriguing quarterback prospects in 2007 is Arcadia's Kevan Walker, and coach Jon Dimalante was kind enough to share his spring evaluation of the soon to be senior, who has given a verbal commitment to Minnesota, but also has been offered a scholarship from UCLA, where his father is the defensive coordinator

Above: Walker will be a receiver in college, but the Apaches need a quarterback, and he might be it."

"Right now Kevan's our starting quarterback, and Forrest Reed is his back-up," Dimalante said. "Kevan's athletic, he has a good arm, he's got great football instincts and he gives us so many options in the backfield that we haven't had in the past. He's dangerous anytime the balls in his hands, and he's going to give opposing defenses a lot to think about. He's also still learning the position, but he seems to be a quick learner. We'll learn a lot more during the summer as he continues to grow."

The Apaches' summer passing league schedule is as follows: June 19 @ San Marino; June 21 @ Arroyo; July 5 @ San Marino; July 10 @ Temple City; July 17 @ La Canada; July 19 @ Arroyo; July 24 @ La Canada; and July 26 @ Arroyo.

QUESTION: What other quarterbacks do you expect to shine in 2007. Who are the locks, sleepers and up-and-comers?

ABOVE: Muir players enjoying some fun under the sun.

La Salle's summer passing league schedule is as follows:
June 19 @ Baldwin Park; June 21 @ Hacienda Heights Wilson; June 26 @ Crescenta Valley; June 28 @ Arroyo; July 3 @ Baldwin Park; July 5 @ Arroyo; July 10 @ Claremont; July 12 vs. So. Pasadena @ La Salle, 5 p.m.; July 17 vs. San Gabriel @ La Salle, 5 p.m.

how did St. Francis do in passing league this summer?

Anon--
No summer 7s last week and I was in Colorado Springs with my daughter who swept the age 1-19 division by 11 minutes in a triathlon.

Anonymous said:

p finchamp did you play in the summer 7s in the sand last weekend?

p finchamp said:

Well no formal passing league stuff for RH Prep but their summer is starting with a 5 week trip together. They will be in a football camp at Univ. of Washington then travel and play a passing game against Lake Oswego HS, followed by a joint team barbeque...a la rugby.

While in Honolulu they will play another passing game against (Punahou?)followed again by the camaraderie of eating together afterwards at a luau.

These "little" journeys play as "epics" in the tales of brothers/friends down the road. We all have our stories and these lucky men are making theirs. I'm guessin" they'll come back united and on a mission. A mission from God...maybe it's a Blues Brother's reference, maybe not...

The SG quarterback said:

Damn .. this back-up quarterback seems like he might be the next best thing... better than 3 area leading quarterbacks.. and better than the one that led his team to the D7 finals. wow! i gotta see this kid. high school must just be a stepping stone for him, bring on college football already... A better arm than steven gonzales? that kid had a gun!... throws harder than siale ramirez? he can throw! .. and more accuracy than me? hahaha i like the kid and he is good, but watch who you compare him to...

Stang Fan,

Like it or not, wins are great... but you must admit that Tussle week and preparation for the game goes back many years for the community of Pasadenans. I remember as far as 1976 when I understood the game of football and hearing the hood talk about the Tussle was one event that the differences were set aside among crips and bloods and other gangs such NSP, SSP, Villa Boys become all in one peaceful week when everyone wore their RED & WHITE and their Blue & Gold with honor and respect.

well i'm sure there is more than one Coach Lopez in the area. i was referring to the Coach Lopez who was at la salle until 2005

Sorry bud, but D wide out never said you guys (based on your poor grammar and spelling I'm assuming Maranatha) didn't score. He only said the La Salle quarterback picked your D apart.

i was at that passing league game and la salle did not pick us apart. we scored to.. so tell the whole story. not just your side. la sallle is a good team but not unstopable.

d wide out said:

who doesnt pick apart flintridge prep and maranantha!!! haha

SGV fan said:

has anyone else seen this kid chase rettig from la salle? the kid can throw a country mile , i personally saw him pick apart flintridge prep and maranantha. the kid has a cannon for an arm and with his receivers running good routes, they will be unstopabble

I LOVE YOU... I HATE YOU!!! said:

You hit it You hit it on the head, the best show in town has been the SGH offence for those years you mention. The 03 team was the most exiting, high flying act to hit the WSGV in history. They were 10 min and one score away from beating a great South Hills team for the Div 7 championship. And after that team, they had a little bad ass 5'9" 140lb receiver catch 215 passes for 2,600 yard and 25 TD's. talk about throwing it around. All these old coaches have no clue how to throw the ball. They all have outstanding athletes but don't know how to use them. Four yards and a cloud of dust gets you some wins but gets your ass kicked in the playoffs. Coach Jude Olivas at SG is the future, when more coaches like him get jobs this area will take off. Speaking of which I'm suprised some smart AD hasn't snatched him up already.

Well here is an interesting quarteback competition. It seems that Coach Jones at San Gabriel is having last years freshman quarterback Isac Valdez compete with the JV quarterback Michael Varela for the job to succeed Saile Ramirez. As it stands today the soon to be sophmore is ahead and takes the first team snaps. The tail of the tape says one thing but the OC has a bit of a bias going on. Here is the deal. Isac is a 5'6" sophmore who played for the OC in JAA and is the cousin of former SGH assistant Zeke Prado. Isac is quick on his feet but lacks arm stength and down field vision. He is more suited for an H back or slot receiver spot. Michael is a 5'11" Junior coming off an All Almont League selection as a pitcher. Obviously he has a strong arm, good feet and can see down field. He is also the younger brother of Alfred Varela so the pedigree is there. It will be interesting to see what happens in passing league and more importanly when they put the pads on in August.

crockum is a good player, but he will DEFINITELY not lead the dawgs past the stangs. muir's db's are too good and phs is a one dimensional team. they'll be lucky if they hit double digits in the tussle

Well, well, well, here we go again.

First off, that thing you smell is definitely not fear on Muir's end. The last time Muir actually feared H.S. was right around the time Disco was popular.

Secondly, when you CONSTANTLY lose to someone YEAR after YEAR, OVER and OVER, TIME and TIME again, as H.S. always does vs. Muir, the ONLY thing you EVER have is next year. So....well....I guess....enjoy that for now.

Listen, I'm glad we can go back and forth about this, it's great, it really is, but let's be real. Come November, when we toss our athletes out onto that beautiful Rose Bowl grass we are going to absolutely shut down H.S.'s only threat, the passing game, with the best def. backfield in the area. Then we will punish the run game over and over due to H.S.'s HORRIBLE o-line (do they even teach proper run-blocking over there?). And when the game is over we'll take OUR bell right back home where it belongs at 1905 N. Lincoln.

BTW, the only thing that now makes this game a rivalry is proximity. Remember, true rivalries require wins by BOTH sides, not one team simply annihilating the other year after year.

Hmmm, hmmm, hmmm, some people just don't learn.

Prep Fb Realist;

Calling out Muir is what makes the rivalry one of the greatest in SOCAL and the only 2 schools to play at the Famous Rosebowl...But then again, you would not know about such rivalry and what the game means to the city of Roses.

WATCH OUT FOR SEBASTIAN OROZCO @ TC. HES A SENIOR AND HES GOT AN ARM. PLUS HE ISNT A TYPICAL TC QB. HE HAS SOME HEIGHT

Lopez is dedicated? Are you guys talking about Johnny Lopez?

Last I checked, didn't he bail out on Marshall midway through the season, forcing the AD to promote the softball coach to head coach.

Didn't Lopez also try to bench Randall Rivers, a year after he led Marshall to the semi's. Lopez never had the respect of his team. After games, guys wouldn't even stay for his postgame comments.

Also I don't have anything to do, nor do I care about the Turkey Tussle-- but come on Dawg. Win a game before you start calling out Muir. You guys calling out Muir in football is about as ridiculous as them calling out you guys in basketball. Peace.

Anonymous said:

courious, i agree. Coach Lopez was dedicated to every one of his players... does anyone know where he is these days??

DAWG said:

Do I smell fear of a loss for this upcoming Tussle Stang Fan?????? It is great when reverse psych is utilized by some bloggers who jib-jab and blah blah for all of the wins that Muir has accomplished over PHS. Ding-Ding...get over it dude. No one talks about last year's game... Is all about this season. Just Bring it the bell to the bowl and make sure the brass shines for the DOGS.

AV and AV JR,
listen if your boy is good enough he'll win the spot. HE DOESNT GET ROLL OVER MINUTES FOR WHAT ALFRED DID, SG ISNT CINGULAR!

The pedigree???
Daddy played D1
JR played at E.L.A.C, but now working at a hotel.
So it only seems to PEDIGRESS from there.
Wrong!!!!
Do the things that will get you the edge.
1) Try not to be Ineligible coming to a sophomore year.
2) I think the parents spent some fund, sending a player to a camp to get that edge.
3) Don’t pull a player out of 0 period because it is too tough during baseball season.
And as far as AV JR is concerned, you have zero room to talk, what do you know??? You only played high school ball.

hey all i know is that I had 3 area leading quaterbacks when i played at san gabriel...and i know for a fact that my little brother michael throws harder than saile rameriz...furthur than steven gonzales...and more accurate than frankie bernard..and hes only going to be a junior..know one knows how good a quaterback he is better than me and if San Gabriel wants to start winning anytime soon they need to put him in. cuz if i was still there and he wasnt my quarterback...i wouldnt play knowing theres better talent on the sideline

GloucesterCoach said:

Big A,
They usually happen around 3 or 4 so in the afternoon since some kids have summer school and what not in the morning. Plus coaches have workout programs that they like their players to do before the scrimmage.

Or apparently in TC's case they are running stairs at 6 AM, which I think is quite impressive.

I think Arcadia's schedule is pretty odd that they are playing the same teams over and over, but I guess that it is the opinion of the coaches and what they think the players need. I remember playing different teams every week to have us get looks at different schemes. There is no wrong way to do it. Passing Leagues definitely help players a lot.

BigA said:

Walker, Willm, Ahmaz, Picard, Golper and Rambeau will lead this Apache squad to victory.

I'm so excited for this upcoming football season...I'm hoping to get out to one of Arcadia's passing league games...(what time do they happen) I would like to see the one against San Marino.

Anyone else going to visit passing league games?

Looks like another woulda, coulda, shoulda year for Arcadia.

I'd like to know more about San Gabriel and the Mission Valley League. Is Paul Wilson going to be the quarterback at Rosemead, and what's going on with Gabrielino. How long before Vince Lopez gets that going again?

Anonymous said:

burbank schools are horrible at football. they got lucky last year. Muir and Arcadia on any other given year would have destroyed burbank schools. Good luck next year when you are at the bottom of the league next to hoover and glendale.

Good to see Stang Fan back....let's just remember that the Pacific title goes through the City of Burbank.

g.o.a.t. said:

SG's lineman are not that big. so i don't think the height will be that much of a difference. I also think Michael holds the ball for too hlong. Isaac gets ride of the ball quicker. Michael has the arm definetly. Isaacas the athletism. We will see what happens during the summer though..And i dont think the OC is biased. He preaches the fact that you earn what you get. So whoever gets the Qb spot earned it.

Thank you! FInally a Dena post from someone other than "Cat"-Dawg.

Crockum's a good kid and a great athlete and would be a really good QB if he was taller. He'll definitely lead his team to a few W's this year.

As for a victory vs. those "damn" Stangs, well, there's no need for me to mention how ridiculous of a statement that is...so I won't. However, at the current pace Dog fans, you probably will win one Tussle....in the next 25 years.

Anonymous said:

Tyron Crockum at PHS is finally going to lead the Bulldogs past those damn Mustangs. He was one of the best quarterbacks last year, and this is his third year at QB. I'll bet right now he leads the area in passing and touchdowns
