BREAKING NEWS: Temple City promotes defensive coordinator Randy Backus, making him the ninth head coach in Rams history

| | Comments (37) |

The Rams will formally announce on Wednesday the hiring of defensive coordinator Randy Backus to succeed Mike Mooney, who is moving on to become an assistant principal at San Marino High School. Backus, a graduate of La Verne, will be starting his 14th year with the Rams, where he has been part of four Rio Hondo League titles.

Backus reaction:
“I’m extremely excited to continue with the great tradition of Temple City football. There’s a few jobs in Southern California high school football where the name is associated with successful football like Bishop Amat, Charter Oak, Hart and Mission Viejo, and Temple City is one of them.”
“The standard has been set and I don’t expect a drop off,” Backus continued. “Our attention to detail and our work ethic will reflect in the product on the field.”

AD John VanDeVeere's reaction:
“He brings quite a few years of experience and he knows the tradition of Temple City football and what we expect of our coaches and players,” VanDeVeere said. He’s very familiar with Temple City football and I’m excited for him to have the opportunity to take over there. I think it’s something he deserves.”

I usually don’t reply lying on sites except you have some good readable material.

What a release to discover a piece of paper that may perhaps be real ultimately really worth reading! I’ve been looking for all-around about this subject except men and women just put garbage posts, or brief meaningless article. I have observed a couple vids on youtube but it’s now the equivalent as reading a good article.

RB is the man! I have fond memories playing softball with him and Clay Brown while growing up at Coolidge school.

Another paper said he was the 8th coach then they corrected themselves. Perhaps you guys should do the same being he is now the 9th coach.

I'd be interested in hearing who will be on the staff. Who calls the offense now that Mooney is gone? Will Backus still call the D? Answers, anyone?

Yeah I saw that too. What does that dude do? Sift through 50 year old fish wrap clippings researching this stuff? But yeah I think it's right. I mean he listed the stinking coaches!

Good for Backus but I think he's the ninth coach in TC history. Some guy on another website had him as the ninth and listed all the coaches since the 1950s. That vato always seems to know his history so I'm sure its right.

Hey Coach Backus, Congrats! I know you will do a great job with the kids. Shoot me an email.

I love that quote above mentioning the schools with tradition. Even though TC is a shadow of its Glory days in the 1970's, one has to appreciate the importance of football over there.

This is a great hire for TCHS. Coach Backus really deserved this job. He has put numerous hours in and I'm happy for him.

T.C. has made the decision. It's Backus

KERR CAN NOT BE A COACH HE IS GOING TO BE A DEAN FOR TEMPLE CITY!!!

RAM FAN said:

It'll be a travesty if anyone other than Randy Backus gets this job

No one knows those kids better, and no one has devoted himself more to Temple City football than that man

Backus deserves this so much!

I'm really pulling for Backus. I'm a current player, and you see his devotion to Temple City Football and its players.

I have spoke to David kerr and he believes he already has the job

TC Player said:

Kerr was a Head Coach for a little while before Backus was at TC.

Kerr played is ball at USC and coached a couple of years at arcadia before going to TC.

Thanks Kyle

Hey Fred,
I heard from two of my sources over at TC that the two candidates are...

1) Randy Backus
2) David Kerr
