why didnt i see josh parrish and connor berry out at the HOFG? i went to support my fellow SP teammates and came back sorely dissapointed in a rather sloppy penalty ridden second half. Lance Mitchell Looked very strong for the west side and would be my choice for MVP if there was one

It has been an honor to be a part of the West Team and I have enjoyed every minute of practice with the OFFENSIVE LINEMEN.

A little thought of coaching the O-Line along with coach Dave Loera from Hollywood HS, here are the following names: Soumakian (TC), Murrieta (Alhambra), Muratalla (El Monte), Guererro (Hollywood), Luthey (LC), Beasley (PHS), Ornelas(Gabrielino), and some of the D-line who stepped in at times...there were great FUN times to see great players get along and to see rivals come together to perform as a TEAM with their positive character and leadership skills has made the last 2 1/2 weeks some of the greatest memories and moments in my coaching career. I like to thank Coach Murphy and Coach Rodriguez for giving me the opportunity to coach the WEST O-line. It has been an honor to represent Monrovia HS football while being on the Maranatha Field of Dreams. Thanks coaches and thank you LINE.
I also would like to Thank Coach Loera, who has 30 years experiece, for his contribution and I have learned so much from him.
God Bless,

Coach David Alonso (Go West and Go Cats)

Is their practice on Sat. June 30 for the WEST team

what is the big deal about ls and tc? yes it was a big game for la salle this year. yes both of them had a season ended at the hands of verbum dei. but with mooney leaving and many seniors (including both qb's) gone, it will be like two different teams meeting again.

oct 5 seems to be a big day for the both la salle and maranatha. maranatha's got rhp, la salle has a game at temple city

From readin the article on Coach Murphy. It seems like Potts and Murphy has some good chemistry with each other. I have been to some west practices and Potts has been taking most of the QB reps and he is looking sharp on his throws. Cant wait to see this kid play one last time! GO CATS

GO WEST!

CIF realigns every two years I’ve heard so I’m sure Maranatha will move out of Div XIII and move into a higher division next year. Everyone is on Maranatha to be challenged after one very successful season. Our growing student body is why I think we will be move up and play schools of similar size. If you go back and look at our records for the last 4 years we haven’t dominated Div XIII that’s for sure
2006 – 11 – 3 overall, 4 - 1 league and lost the CIF championship game by one point
2005 – 7 – 4 overall, 2 – 2 league and lost first round playoff game
2004 – 4 – 6 overall, 1 – 2 league and did not make playoffs
2003 – 6 – 5 overall, 1 – 3 league and did not make playoffs

When will the CIF re-assign divisions? Maranatha needs to move out of Division XIII and the Alpha League, and be challenged -

It’s great to see your article on Joel Murphy. With the talent I see on the West squad, don’t be surprised to see a victory over the East team. I’ve been trying to stop and watch a practice but have yet to make it. Are they practicing all next week? Anyone know the times?
Also with the leadership from Coach Murphy and the returning team this coming season looks bright for the Minutemen. Can’t wait for the season to start. There will be a couple of games that will tell a lot about this squad. The rematch against St Margaret’s on Sept 14th and of course RHP on Oct 5th.
GO MINUTEMEN !!!!!!

At the END of the day it all matters to the players as a WIN. Like it or not, real football coaches, fans, and former players may agree. Some people will not admit to it, but the WIN is important. That's why you play to WIN, not play to lose. To win is not the only thing, but the WILL to win is.
Honestly, I have never coached a game to not lose.

This is why the sport of FOOTBALL is so great...only the few who know what it takes to produce a great team and to make the players better than yesterday will agree with me. Right Henry & Mav?

All-Star Fan said:

I've enjoyed all the posts thus far and I have to agree with what the majority of everyone has said. Yes, the WEST is a huge underdog! Yes, some of the West best players, like Alex Jimenez/Andrew Roxas/Zion Babb etc...are not playing for one reason or another. But you know what, I've been to a couple of the West practices and I give mad respect to the guys who have stepped up and are playing. Their practices have been disciplined and intense, yet it seems that the coaching staff understands that it's an all-star game and that they should have some fun out there. The previous poster was right--it's a game of 11 vs 11. All I have to say is that win or lose let's give some props to the West players who decided to pony up and play. Thanks for making us proud guys--mad respect.

Aram said:

That's all fine and dandy, but I'm sure the West area has more than 25-30 all-stars. I want to see all of the best names I've heard about, not just a few of them. I know there are always defections, but I'm hearing stuff like certain schools had two or three guys selected to play and they've never shown up. I don't care about the Won/Loss chances of either team, I just want to see names.

hsfotblfn said:

Hey Aram, just remember, it's not the quanity of players that make up a squad, it's the quailty of the 11 players that step on the field of battle. Yes the East may have 40-45 players on their roster and the West may be only getting 25-30 out to practice but only 11 play at a time. Beleive me the West has 11 quailty athletes on both sides of the ball to play this game. The only concern here is will the conditioning hold up for 48 minutes. the west ballers will come to play July 6, make no mistake about that. We know that we are the huge underdogs in this game or as one East blogger put it, "the West is the red headed step brother to the East"
and have no business on the field with the East but let me say this again, the West will bring it on July 6, for how many quarters? Well thats another story......

DAWG said:

With proper practice planning and the right staff understanding each others coaching intentions, any All-Star game can be accomplished as a positive WIN. The KEY element on a SINGLE All-Star game is keeping the game plan simple, a ton of CONDITIONING, Fun drills, a positive attitude, enforce the TEAM concept, and most important allow the players to have FUN and the goal with the end result will be appreciated by the players with a Team WIN.

I know we all like to pronosticate about this game but it's always a disappointment. It's fairly unrealistic to gather a coaching staff and a bunch of kids to play in a game way off season and expect much. The game might be more interesting if it were played in the last week of December--at least most of them would still be in decent shape and some of them off for 6 weeks (losers--sorry, tough love).

And really there is nothing at stake (although some might play for it if it was the eak variety). Clearly there is a much greater chance for injury, whether it be one's own conditioning or that of a fellow player---there simply is more risk. Don't get me wrong I will always like and support an All-Star venue but I don't think you'll get a whole lot of buy-in from the players. Meaningless except for the player recognition.

i would like to see the reciever Cedric Ho from sghs. this kid was destroying everyone in his way from don lugo, muir, ayala, south pas(any team sg passed against) i like to see how he earned a scholarship without playing this year. i dont believe the hype that he's better than emmanual rodirguez, zion babb, kevan walker, jermaine thomas. lets see what he gots.. go wildcats!! potts will lead the west to victory.

New York said:

Crazyque,

Why no AJ? Get that kid out there to help roll the East.

New York said:

Blueorca,

We're just as serious about the West winning as we are when we say that Bishop Amat should drop a few divisions to give itself a chance. Go back to dreaming about the days when Amat could actually win the recruiting wars over rivals (haha) Los Altos and South Hills.

With 30 players, the West shows a great deal of dominance and with the staff...the East has no idea what's going to hit'em on July 6th.

I haven't been out to the West practice since opening night, but from what I hear the attendance has been poor. Something like 30-something players. Is that true? I hope it's not for the sake of the game.

jerry is strong but he is not fluid, he moves robotic..but he's tough and will do great! go west!!

Back in 94 the West was a huge underdog! The east had 13 scholarship players. The West won 21-20 and shocked the SGV. GO WEST! I'm tired of hearing all the talk about how the east is so great. Kids that live on the westside of the 605 are alot tougher than those on the eastside of the 605.

Tokayo said:

The west's running game looks fantastic, especially behind big right tackle Jerry Murrieta. How do you think Anthony Brown and Dushine Smith gained all those yards the last two seasons. Big boy's got skills. Watch him perform on July 6.

the nemisis said:

The West defensive-front 7 looked fast, tough, and explosive at practice saturday. I think they are going to be the catalyst to a WEST WIN!! that and LAVELLE PETERSON!!! (that guy is the real deal!)

Steve Ornelas said:

Hello, I am the father of the Gabrielino player and his name is Steve Ornelas not Omras, it would be very much appreciated if this were corrected.

Also West very talented and good solid run threat in Broadnax and Peterson. Both lines have good size and talent, West squad will come to play.

New York,

Are you a Harvard grad?

New York said:

Don't get me wrong. A kid like Sean has a bright future no matter what college he chooses, and he happened to choose a great one. My point is that a kid should not let student loans deter him from going to Harvard or any other of the Ancient Eight. Harvard has a $22 or $24 billion endowment and are very generous with financial aid. Kids from all over the world and all walks of life are on campus. For the most part, the football team is comprised of a bunch of hard-nosed, blue-collar guys from across the country. A school like Poly is not the typical stop for Coach Murphy, but I'm sure Brendan is a welcomed addition.

Go to Harvard its going to be great not only with the money in the future but you will get to dominate with a local boy. Brendan Hirschman from Poly is going to wreck people up there with you. go up there and knock out some smart kids

Anonymous said:

new york, give the guy a break. new england is cold, not to mention very far from the home we call southern cali. some of us like the comfort of being close to home! uc davis is a great school. as long as sean dedicates himself to his academics as well as his kicking, he can go anywhere after graduation

good luck in davis!

New York said:

I wish he had better guidance.

Graduating from their with $25K in debt is not bad considering that it costs about $150K over four years and that it is a conduit to Wall Street, Law School, Med. School or anything else a kid would want to pursue.

ہ said:

but i could be mistaken. the only concrete fact i know is Harvard was next on his list.

ہ said:

Sean said they would only pay for tuition if he went.

New York said:

Harvard does not offer scholarships, only need-based financial aid through its need-blind admissions policy.

ہ said:

Sean Kelley's longest kicked in 2006 was 55. Knowing him, he can probably get 60-62 in a good day(i've seen him do it at practice). It's pretty surprising that not too many schools went after him. Davis was the best school to offer a full scholarship then it was Harvard on a partial scholarship.

coaches corner said:

You know we really will miss you Sean Kelley not only a fantastic kicker but an incredible person.Good Luck up in Davis and don't forget us down here at M-Town

DAWG said:

Wassup Aram?

Sean kicked several 47 yard field goals and room to spare. The web-net stopped several footballs from going into the 210 frwy.

Aram said:

Yeah, the Monrovia kicker was the highlight for me. He set up for his first attempt from about 30 yards out and sent the ball off the property. The coach under the goal posts just looked up. So then he casually decided to pick up his tee and gear and move back further. Hilarious.

hsfotblfn said:

FYI, the Duarte players arrived rather late into the practice and will be solid contributors to the West squad.

The WEST looks solid all around. Sean kicked great.

Great talent all around including a great combo of staff. Many kids were not present due to Grad-night and Grad events.

Just got back from watching about 45 minutes of West practice. Not all of the team was there, but it was a good collection of talent. I think James Davis is playing ... is that right? I thought I saw him, Broadnax and Peterson at RB during 7-on-7 drills.

The O-line had only five or six guys. A couple of them looked solid.

The Muir receiver, #4?, looks dangerous. The QBs were Potts and Ramirez. Timing was a bit off, but it's the first day.

It's a pretty good looking group. I'll have something to compare them with tomorrow when the East opens practice.

I didn't see Jermaine Thomas from Duarte. Is he not playing?

New York said:

We've got this one.

Broadnax and Peterson will be the playmakers for the west, which might be enough to take down the big boys
