SATURDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK ... East wins 14-13
East wins 28th annual Hall of Fame game at Bassett High School, scoring on a third-quarter safety to pull out a 14-13 win. It was their sixth straight victory to take a 17-9-2 lead in series.

Above: La Canada's Lavelle Peterson rushed for 116 yards on 13 carries.
The East entered Friday’s 28th annual Hall of Fame game at Bassett high school with a five game winning streak — having won four of its five by less than a touchdown.
In front an animated crowd of more than 3,000, the East found a way to pull it out again, scoring their winning points on a safety with 9:55 left in the third quarter, then held on for a 14-13 win.
Monrovia kicker/punter Sean Kelley, who had a ball snapped over his head in the first quarter that led to an East touchdown, and had a 37-yard field goal attempt blocked in the second quarter because of a bad snap, couldn’t do anything with the third-quarter snap that led to the safety as it skidded through the back of the end zone.
“I haven’t had that many bad snaps in the whole season,” Kelley mumbled to himself.
... Lavelle Peterson had nine carries for 93 yards in the first half, and finished with 13 carries for 116 yards to lead all rushers. The Utah-bound running back was arguably the player of the game.
... Muir's Lance Mitchell had three interceptions, and Duarte's Jermaine Thomas had an interception and returned a fumble 78-yards for a touchdown.
... Covina quarterback Mike McDonough had two interceptions and fumbled twice, but he was still the West's player of the game, rushing for 111 yards and scoring on a two-yard run.

Above: Covina's Mike McDonough coughing up one of his two fumbles.
HALL OF FAME BOX
East 6 6 2 0 -- 14
West 7 6 0 0 --13
East: Jon Joe 4 pass from Mark Mendrum (kick failed)
West: Lavelle Peterson 3 run (Sean Kelley kick)
East: Mike McDonough 2 run (pass failed)
West: Jermaine Thomas 78 fumble return (run failed)
East: Safety.

S keeley,
Thanks for making the guy's point. It would have been nice to see you actually kick!!!!!
PS - you look fine to me - rather than hitting the gym at Davis you might want to hit the Choline and DMAE
Hey anon,
Thanks for the motivation to stay in the gym and kick everyday as I prepare to take on the starting roll at UC Davis. It's really sad you had to take a shot like that. I do my job, not the greatest, but enough to earn a scholarship. You're right, I probably can't walk 90 yards, and it's a good thing I don't have to. Three steps is all it takes for me.....for 3 points.
--Sean Kelley
What do you guys thing of that PHS player Andreas Beasley that played on the DL?
Dawg,
Have you seen the kicker for the West - he couldn't walk 90 yards.
Anon;
In the early 90's, A Muir HS punter dropped a long snap and recovered to score on a 90 plus yards at PCC against Glendale HS. So it is possible ANON.
Go to sleep ANON.
DAWG
Dawg,
The is answer is yes it is uncommon for the kicker to run with the ball - that is why he is the kicker and not the running back. I bet a few fans would have a blast if the cheer leaders took a few snaps too. Doesn't make it right.
Never heard of Keith Johnson.
Does anyone on the blog know Keith Johnson, the guy who hangs around local high schools pedaling his "NFL" training program to the football players?
Changing the rules of the Hall of Fame football game, is like changing the MENU at "In-n-Out Burger." Having funny fumbles and crazy snaps is part of the game. Some fans have more fun when a kicker attempts to run the ball. Is not common for kickers to run with the ball. Who knows, maybe Sean Kelly recovers the fumble and runs for a 80 yard TD. Then, we would not be having these POST, right?
DAWG
NOT having a long snap, then the Cowboys and Tony Romo would never be in the NFL books as blooper snap fumble, which kept them out of the playoffs. hahahah, it's always a good day when the Cowboys lose!!!!
Go Bears!
DAWG
rushing the kicker and punter in these all star games is stupid - I didn't go to the game to see who had the best long snapper.
Actually with Simon's idea what you would get is a game where the team that made the most positive plays wins and we won't be reading about long snappers and holders and a myriad of other reasons the game turned into a mistake fest.
This isn't a real football game so the normal rules shouldn't apply.
2 weeks with kids from all over and in various degrees of football shape trying to learn an offense/defense and kicking game in their spare time...cmon, it's hardly normal.
What harm is there in trying it for a year? Evaluate the outcome and solicict feedback from the players, coaches, and fans. If it doesn't work, change it back.
And for you coaches and purists out there, it's not like Vince Lombardi and Pop Warner will rise from the dead and curse the game because an All-Star game tweaked the rules.
Food for thought Fred...pass it on
Hey Prep FB Realist,
Regarding your last Post...the ol style of scrummage football huh? I guess you're right.
DAWG
Hey Dawg,
"1. Just leave the game of HS football as is. If you take out all of the punt blocks/rushes, stunts, long snaps...then we would be playing SOCCER."
Nope. We would be playing rugby at halftime of a high school football all-star game.
O-Cat,
It looks like my response to you got deleted by the Star News some how.
Anyway, Rycroft is the D-Coordinator for the Foothill Firehawks semi-pro team. He was great for Monrovia football, and I wish he were still there.
Simple Simon,
TWO things;
1. Just leave the game of HS football as is. If you take out all of the punt blocks/rushes, stunts, long snaps...then we would be playing SOCCER.
2. DAWG is DAWG, Coach Alonso is Coach Alonso. Split personalities = 5150.
Is all FUN stuff Simon.
DAWG
NY,
Coach Richard Gridebach is also a great Defensive LINE coach and takes care of business with D. I owe a lot of credit to coach RG for teaching me a few things with the D-line.
DAWG
Congratulations to Coaches Minter and Alonso for keeping the hawgs focused.
Baldwin Park lineman competition 2007(results TOP 5) #1 Baldwin Park #2 Alhambra #3 Moreno Valley #4 Monrovia #5 North Torrance ..Thank you B.P. another great competition.See you next year
New York:
Where is Coach Rycroft?...He was the best thing to ever happen to the Monrovia High School Defense. He was a Crazy Man and that's just what wakes up some people to play harder.
CF,
Give credit to SGVFan for mentioning Parry. I mentioned Alford and Moore.
If you compare our success to the rest of the RHL, then you are contributing to complacency. The RHL should not be our benchmark. If you enjoy stats, perhaps you should look at sacks or hurries per attempt. The other RHL teams pass a lot more (not TC) because they are usually losing. In the MHS vs. TC game which QB was hurried more? No need to answer that. I watched it myself. But it's not entirely our line's fault. Backs need to block too.
Cat Family,
Interesting name. I wonder if Rycroft would agree with it. You know somebody who knows somebody...
Minter is a nice guy, and I'm glad he's back, but he was gone in 05, not 04. Which means there was a different o-line coach during each of Potts' three years.
Bell, too, is.a nice guy and has a lot of history with the program, but in different capacities.
During the past three years, we have had coaches Angelo, "Rhino," and Bell as OC. Do you not think things change with each coordinator. I'm all for holding people accountable for actions, but please. I can understand why Potts may not have been confident or confused. Things were new every year.
What did you mean when you said something about "other positions" and then the "hit of his life". Are you talking about the phantom personal foul?
Here's one last question: if Potts was not good, why start him for three years?
Again, what hype have we put on Potts? He was a second team West SGV QB. That's an honor but it's not hype.
SGVfan,
NO! I did not say we have not had decent coaches since Coach AD left in 98. I said we have not had consistent coaches.
A different point: you are wrong. If a team does not have a decent position coach that does not necessarily mean that the player won't have a good year.
You're right: Kenny had a great senior season, but it's not has if he were some schlep off the street. He was a good athlete.
2 things on my mind regarding this thread:
1. The all-star game needs these adjustments-
No more rushing punt/fg/pat
Limit defensive fronts/stunts/blitzes
Anybody who's watched early season practices and games will agree that defenses are consistently way ahead of offenses and kicking games are still shaky at best. I think these changes make sense for the type of event being staged...don't most other football all-star games (hs/college/pro) have some type of guidelines like this?
2. Are Dawg and Coach Alonso the same person? Who is the Maranantha Line Coach and did he coach the team to?
Well first and foremost let me just explain where I will be coming from.I am not a coach.I am not a teacher.I now someone close to the program and had to share this with you, but I have to put this to REST.NY I admire the heart you have for our beloved Green&White, let me see if I can answer a few questions for you.David Potts is a great kid.I wish him all the best of luck at the next level. How was he as a H.S. quarterback he was good a better athlete then QB.One thing David missed was leadership,he never really took the bull by the horns ever in his carrer.I don't now if it was because of lack of confidence or maturity.I could tell you numerous times watching him sulk about anything and I mean anything. As far as other posistions on the field, get real. The hit in the quarter final game was the hit of his life.I think we are really putting way to much hype on David Potts. NY you mentioned two of some of our good ones in the past Darryl Moore and Kenny Parry And they were half the athlete Potts was.I think we should stop putting the blame on everybody and start letting the kids take some responsibility for there actions.Josh Knight might of helped but he was there once-twice a week.Randy Bell was his Coach last two years and he did the best he could. And as far as sacks. Yes, Coach Minter left for 2004 but he is back now .They led the Rio Hondo league in SACKS allowed the last two years edging out T.C. by a couple this past year.So I don't think time was an issue. This post was not a David bashing both things that I critique him on can be fixed .Go Cats
Hey New York,
You say that MHS has had a decent QB coach since the 96'-98' seasons? If that's the case then they shouldn't have had any decent QB's since then right? I got two words for you. KENNY PERRY! Didn't have the physical talent that Potts has but was 10 time the QB!
You can each form your own opinion as to what should and shouldn't happen or your assumptions about what does and does not happen.
I stand by my assessment of Potts and the coaching turnover. The last time MHS had consistency with OC and QB coaching was 1996-1998 seasons, and look what happened. Calvin Alford did very well and Daryl Moore, who is a fraction the size of Potts, was a valley passing leader.
Mix in a turnover of o-line coaches, and you have a situation where a QB is running for his life. How many yards were lost to sacks the prior two seasons. I think Josh Knight had a big influence on Potts last year. Potts at least became a QB who committed very few turnovers. It's too bad he's gone.
Up until this year, the one pillar at MHS was Coach Ben Mendoza, the kicking coach. Monrovia's kicking game has been phenomenal since 1993 due to Ben's efforts, even when he did not have a "big-name" kicker to work with. I hope he comes back. That guy really cares about players, and has always gone out of his way to help all players in their times of need.
It is difficult to keep a high school staff together. Monrovia's head coach has a lot more on his plate than just X's and O's. Garrison does the best job coaching that he can. It's not as if these guys get paid (maybe a couple pennies an hour). It would be nice to have a system in place that would not be too disrupted with position coaching turnover, but that is hard to do and not the case at MHS.
I second the hsfotblfan motion to STOP talking about the West loss and how the Jeremy things is getting so old. HE was not nominated and that's that!
LIFE goes on.
FRED, lets get another topic rolling soon.
hsfotblfan,
This is not about side stepping the truth. Thanks to you im at MHS and my coaching career continues. My coaching philosophy and main goal is to provide the best guidance to the players that come through the ranks. The lower levels are the most crucial years and overlooked most of the time. After coaching JV and Fresh levels for the last 8 years, I have seen many players progressed in society. My loyalty to M-town is for the players. I dont coach for the $$$, I coach for the love of the game. Good luck with your Blue/Red/White colors and I'll be watching some of your games.
Green and White Coach, but my heart belongs to the RED and WHITE colors of PHS.
DAWG
Woulda, coulda, shoulda..
The game came and went. The East won, game over. Move on, stop talking about Jeremy Ortiz already, he was not nominated by his HC so therefore he was not invited. Both teams played hard regardless of the sloppy play or the so called "bad coaching" It's always easy for armchair QB's to second guess the game plan when they have nothing to risk, next topic....PLEASE!!!!!!
the main reason that the west lost was ball control all they had to do was get the ball within the 30yard line. with a guy like lavelle that should have been no problem and then let sean kelley kick and it would have been an easy win but no! we have to spread the ball around cvause its an allstar game and everybody wants their touches and oh yeahthere was one player missing Jeremy Ortiz from Temple City!!! can we get a freaking snap! sean kelley could barely get a kick off and the safty was the snappers fault!

LaVelle looks like a young Mike Tyson.
My bad DAWG...typo......
Hey Dwag, you of all people should know after 5 yrs on the sideline at TC what consistency is all about. Taking 35-40 different players every season and rolling 10-0 or 9-1. Never once may I remind you losing to MHS. I know that you have changed colors and that loyalty plays a huge role in your thinking now but you can’t side step the truth.
When given my chances you know I handle my business on the D side of the ball. After all Dawg, Offense scores points, Defenses win Championship!!!!!
Good luck this season, I will be keeping an eye out for MHS.
Monrovia HS football has one of the best head coaches from SGV. Coach G takes care of business with all his athletes. That's why M-Town football is a threat year in and year out.
Watch out RIO Hondo league!
The CATS are on the hunt.
Lavelle Peterson is the best W/R ever. He has his own style and he his passionate about his game. The whole family is proud of you and the best of luck to you in Utah. Lavelle you did and excellant job Friday keep up the good work. Much Love,
Cousin
I'm sorry but hasn't garrison been coaching at Monrovia for years? All this talk about Potts having so many different qb coaches in so many years shouldnt matter because he's had the same HEAD coach his whole high school career. That should be enough of a constant for a high school football player.
Or does Garrison not know how to develop his athletes?
I thought this was interesting on the other site and definitely a must see.

take care of Defense biz and work on that offense. Its very important to run the right plays from the offensive point of view. I know is hard for you at times.

Rio Hondo Fan;
I dont coach at TC anymore. I now coach at Monrovia HS. Im helping out with O and D line up with the varsity/JV players.

Re Air7: for a variety of reasons, if you really want to learn the QB position there is one guy - Steve Clarkson (Air7). Best coaching staff, best methods, most developed program and the best evaluators of QB talent out there.
what people think on this blog of the Air 7 camps?
Hey Dawg just what title are you over at Temple City, are you the Varsity O-Line coach. And how are the Rams going to do this year
Hey Dawg, not to much just trying to get it done on the practice field....You know......
Former TC player QB Matt Malczinsky is possibly one of the best QB coaches within the SGV. I seen him work with Saxon Riley and Donnie Del Tempo @ TC. He did a good job and if he still coaching at TC, the next QB will surprise the other coaches from Rio Hondo. Maybe Southwest Yuma Arizona should invest in a QB coach for David Potts. Good Luck David
What's up hsfotblfn?
DAWG
Potts has had a carousel of coordinators and QB coaches in his three years as a starter. Add the all-star staff and that makes four in three years. Wait until he gets a staff with some consistency. Right now he is a smart kid with A LOT of raw talent. He has a bright future if he commits. Well put New York, finally someone telling it like it was. Potts never had a chance to grow, develope or become the leader that he should have been. For players to blossom in a high school program there needs to be constant consistency both Offensively and Defensively
not the whole sell coaching changes that have taken place the past 4yrs at MHS. What a waste of all that talent!!!!!
I have to agree that starting Potts off with quick hitches or screens would have benefited the west. That's how you built a Qb's confidence, then you can work in what you want.
Potts is a good-raw talent that can play any skilled position. You can't base one game on the guy, that's an injustice. I have seen Potts play for 3 years now. To be honest, he developed somewhat but is far from peaking. He went through, like NY said, lots of coaches and different systems. It is what it is, and he could only get better if he falls into a good system, a system that will cut him loose.
Peterson should have carried the ball 20+ times regardless, and put Broadnax in the slot. In the 1998 game, Coach Garrison had Arcadia's Lewis carry the ball 20+ had 180+ yards two touchdowns and won the game for the west.
You don't have to Pass on a 1st and 15. A draw would have been fine.
Coach Murphy was really a victim of circumstances aside from the poor snaps accounting for all of the East points. With a chance to get another touchdown in the second quarter - he i am sure in an effort to get everyone in took out Peterson - with Peterson in they would have scored I believe - the East simply could not stop him even if the East did have the much bigger line. In the second half dumb penalties like too many men on the field or offsides/ false starts would start the series for the west with 1st and 15 or worse. Rather than give the ball to Peterson they passed - a fairly standard response to pass - not a great move when you have an incredible back like Peterson in the backfield - I am sure Coach Murphy has never had a back like him - so Peterson ended up with only a few touches in the second half. Also I would have used Broadnax in the slot - Potts who was off all night - certainly could have hit broadnax with some hitches and let him do his thing. I also would have like to have seen the other West quarterbacks - although in fairness to Potts he was running for his life most of the game - the East D line was much bigger than the West. Coach Murphy showed he can coach with the big boys - it is hard to keep everyone happy and he mostly did a good job of that - his lack of ego plays better than most huge ego coaches with HS kids these days. Had the unforce errors not occured everyone would have been talking about what a great job he did.
Well put New York...I agree with you. No QB has ever shined at a Hall Of Fame game with crazy passing yards.
Is easier for parents and fans to say they (west coaches) should have done this, or should have done that. There are always critics after a loss, but dont say much after a win. Some fans and parents think is easy to coach a team in 2 1/2 weeks after a 7 month lay off. Coach Murphy and his staff did great during the practices and the game. We did not get blown out by 28 points like some of the East Fans were talking about.
It's always easier to destroy than to create.
Yours Truly,
West O-Line Coach
DAWG
What hype are you clowns talking about? All the attention was on our runningbacks, and it was well deserved. We should have ridden them to the promised land. Hype about Potts? A second-team west sgv does not exactly bring hype. Try McD from the east - the two-time player of the year. Potts threw for barely over a thousand yards as a senior. He was good, though, at minizing turnovers. What passer ever lights up an all-star game after sitting out for six months? McD did not have an unbeleivable game.
Potts has had a carousel of coordinators and QB coaches in his three years as a starter. Add the all-star staff and that makes four in three years. Wait until he gets a staff with some consistency. Right now he is a smart kid with A LOT of raw talent. He has a bright future if he commits.
SGVfootballfan,
You Are absolutely correct. I thought Potts was going to be a difference maker..but throughout the game i started to realize this kid was nothing but hype.im sure he is a great kid. but he had plenty of chances to show us what he had. One instance he had lance mitchell open on a corner route, couldn't connect, he had a lot of chances to take the game over. I'm just suprised that in a all-star game Murphy didnt give anyone else a chance to play
The one thing that this game did show is that Potts is not the great QB that a lot of people have made him out to be. Get this straight, I am not knocking the kid as a person, from what I hear he is a great kid, but what I am saying is that he has done nothing that I have seen or read about that would write him into the lore of great H.S. QB's. What was the kid's defining moment of his h.s. football career? When was the game where he put his team on his shoulders and led them to victory? Fred, you picked him 2nd team, based on what? The Hall of Fame game only confirmed what I already knew. Good athlete, not a good QB!
hsfotblfn, thanks for that info i did not know but from my personal experience playing with jeremy i think he should have been nominated. That was his main position but i guess its true no one really cares about a LS
Fred,
Will you be covering the Babe Ruth State Baseball tournament that starts Friday, July 13th at Arcadia High School. There will be alot of players from the All-Area team participating including: Player of the year Rob Rasmussen, MVP of the senior game, Corwin Kim, Alhambra standout Noe Rameriz, Joe DePinto St. Francis, Mike Mendoza Temple City, Dustin Emmons Cresenta Valley and many more. Hope to see you at the field.
I did not see the game, but I have a hunch that when we passed we did not do it off a Peterson play-action to freeze the rush. Too bad. I suppose the easy thing would have been to base the offense around the best weapon on the field (Peterson)...Also, McD from the East had a lot of rushing yards...why can't we have our QBs run a little bit. I remember the 1995 game when Muir's Bonwell did a lot of damage with his legs (and they were not even designed running plays). Oh Well. Have the QB's run and play 11 on 11.
The East may have won by points, but the WEST earned respect on July 6th, 2007. From the West sideline I saw the fear in the East faces when Lavelle got the hand off and ran the ball with great power. The only time Lavelle was taken down was done by 3 East players. Lavelle put a hit on a East player who did a WWE tap-out after his helmet flew off 10 yards. That east player had the look on his face as "what time does the next train come?"
DAWG
Even 20 carries would have worked.
Raminsider, please understand that the West All Star coaching staff can not go out and actively recurit any players. It is the sole responsibilty of the Head Coaches of all teams to nominate 3 players to particapte in the All Star game. Apparently Ortiz was not monminated to be a member of the squad.
If you are going to extend invites to the area’s best players, why wouldn’t you extend an invite to a legitimate long snapper? Call me crazy but we single out guys that can only kick or punt, why not a long snapper. The difference Friday night between a win and a loss was the space between the West sideline and the stands where Temple City’s Jeremy Ortiz was sitting.
A little insight from someone we know
The choice for the West to go for 2 was the right call, because at the time it would have provided a 3-point lead rather than kicking which would have been a two point lead (and only a saftey, which only a cynic thinks about, is a two point scoring opportunity). Unfortunately, though, missing the conversion turned out to be the point difference in the game as the East scored a saftey in the end.
I know it's an all-star game, but it sounds like the West would have won handily if Peterson had gotten his usual 35 touches.
info, i completely agree. after all the recovery and therapy he went through with his leg, it's so unfortunate that he injured his shoulder. have a good recovery #3!
Great Game. A couple of things as an onsite observer.
1) The East believed the press and thought they were going to walk over the West. Surprise,,Surprise the talent was not that different and baring some special teams mishaps they East would be trying to explain why they lost.
2) Peterson and Mitchell are the real deal..I wish them luck at the next level.
3) Unsung heroes include Suomakian (hope I spelled that right) Arriola from SF (just a rock in the middle..big, strong and mean) and the OLinemen from Alhambra (no. #65) he was a stud. Guys like this kept the West competitive all game long.
4) I was a little turned off by the East players and some of their on field antics. Being confident is one thing, being cocky is another! I thought there were a lot of CHEAP shots by the East on the West players. However, I think the West convinced them they were really in for a game in the first quarter. There were at least two helments I saw fly from East Players on blows delivered by the West.
5) The players from Muir played a Great Game!!
6) Good job to Coach Murphy...I thought he did a good job with the boys. He kept the game fun and the West players responded.
The West' original longsnapper, Andy Saldana from LaSalle was injured just a couple days before the game. If he plays--the West wins!!
Didnt i ask before if they needed a D1 snapper wowser the west shoulda won 14-0.
are the title of your article and the box score are contradicting or is it just me? or did fred do that on purpose? i couldn't make the game but it sounded like a poor coaching job by the west with so many mistakes in special teams.
Thought I would come over from the East side of the 605 and congratulate the players from the West, in my opinion the final score wasnt truly indicitive of how the game truly went. The East played some sloppy offensive football from where I sat, good defense will do that even to a good offense.
The kid from La Canada that is going to Utah was in my opinion the overall MVP of the game, he impressed me and I wish him well in his future.
Again Congratulations,
AnyMouse...
with 2 minutes left in the game. The best passer in the san gabriel valley, SAILE RAMIREZ, was watching the game. Potts is a good athlete. BUT Saile Should've played a lot more.
To answer Anon at 1:03 AM - I am not sure the West completed a pass to their own team. Does that answer your question?
Why isn't the game like other all star game where you can't rush the punter and kicker - a shame the West had to lose that way. Agree with Superfan re: Lance - do they play 5 downs over at Muir - I haven't seen that kind of bone head playing since 6th grade and he did it twice. Also if he is going to make an easy pick why fall to the ground - why not run - on the last pick he had a lot of running room and fell to the ground without even being touched.
Lance's two picks were so he coulc sit around drinking a 40 telling his buddies he got two. Won't he won't say is the two he got cost his team 58 yards in field position. Both his picks should have been knocked downs. Oh well he can wake up today and say I got mine, but his team didn't. I can't even think of a Gremlin player that wouldn't know what to do in that situation.
Bottom line, Lance got his so the East could have theirs.
Genius
I don't think the West had any Division one centers playing in the game. Five bad snaps and three of them created 12 points for the East. Wow.
Westsider,
Maybe your are right - re: Potts and the line - makes Peterson's performance even more impressive - of course he is used to not having a line being at LC instead of Monrovia.
Anonymous-
i think you are wrong about Potts, he is a very good athlete and i believe he is a great QB. And be realistic! He was probably the best QB on the feild. This is probably the only gave you seen him play so you can not judge an athlete off one game!! And plus Potts was not being well protected, almost every pass he threw he was immediatly hit on the release. So as a QB its impossible to shine with no line!
Im sorry but i have to back Potts up completely on this one. I have watched this kid since he was a SO playing at MHS. And i can honestly say he is amoung the best QBs to ever come out of that school
Goodluck in your future son because it is very Bright!
how was the qb play from the west?
Couple thoughts for ya. I want to change my child's name to Lavelle Jr.! That kid is the best H.S. athlete I've seen in years. Can't wait to see him on Saturday's/Sundays. Lance Mitchell is a stud, Dwight is legit, and Sparks had some good runs too. All in all I think the West represented well for us and made us proud. And I even have to give the West coaching staff credit. What they did, with the supposed lack of numbers and talent was pretty impressive. Great job West!
What they're saying from the other side.....

Why, because the East didn't cover the spread?
Posted by: Aram at July 6, 2007 10:57 PM
all the credibility of the bloggers was cut down tonight!
who was mvp?

One of the sorriest games I have ever seen. The coaching staff did lousy plays. All these wide receivers who had good records and all you saw were two of them in the whole game. Do you know how many parents of these kids wanted more than just 3 plays after giving this coach and team 2 and 1/2 weeks of their time and for them to pay 7.00 a head and bring the whole family? What an embarassment. tHE SHOULD HAVE HAD ALL THE BOYS PLAY AT LEAST 10 PLAYS...
Get rid of this coaching staff, EAST DID NOT PLAY GOOD AT ALL,
I WANT MY MONEY BACK TOO, 3.00 TO PARK, PLUS 7.00 A HEAD AND 15.00 FOR A SORRY TEE SHIRT, WITH THE
NAME SPELLED INCORRECTLY ON SOME OF THE BOYS.
THIS GAME WAS NOT WAS IT WAS ALL HYPED ABOUT!
DISAAPPOINTED.......GET RID OF THIS COACH

With all said and done the WEST team represented pretty damn well.Lavelle from La Canada by far was the highlght of the game. The tackle from Alhambra was kicking the living sh.. out of #34 from Covina. He ran a lot of his poiwer runs right over that big guy.McD 2 fumbles 2 picks but you could see his qualities , never stops moving his feet and he will be a good JC player but thats about it he just isn't that big.

covina high represented with 4 studs. i think that the covina kids did a very good job

MCD = 2 interceptions, and 2 fumbles that led directly to the West's 2 scores. He's a gutsy player, always ran forward for yardage. But in my opinion he was trying too hard. Also, I think that many of the East players were getting caught up in personal battles with the West players, and this made the East squad suffer a bit because they didn't play as a team. They also could have utilized all the receivers they had a little more. But this is just how I saw the game, I'm sure others had a different take.

Had all the makings of an exciting game at the nice new football stadium with new astro turf and an overflowing crowd, but with all the hype and all it turned out to be a real sleeper.
McD chocked, had about 10 turnovers, I lost count. Mendrum was average, Silva from Workman fared better. O Line can't block. What happened to big Jesse Cervantes from Amat, he didn't play 1 down? I want a refund. Lavea from Los Altos had 0 sacks. East was way overrated, West looked cool and composed. Who won I left with 5 minutes on the clock? #10 and #5 were studs from the West.
Oh by the way, the only highlites was nice to see a new football stadium in da hood and lots of nice looking ladies there tonite and I didn't find my truck sitting on milk crates.

how'd it happen?
please share details people?

MCD is not what I expected him to be. He is at best a good player. 4 Turnovers? That was weak!
Peterson is amazing - how is this this kid not at USC or UCLA - first time i have seen him play WOW. I would have like to have seen Broadnax more in the slot or wide out, his kick off returns were electric - I hope he keeps he head on straight at the JC level - if he does he will get a D1 scholarship - if not well let's not go there - get your grades up Dwight! Should have given someone other than Potts a shot at QB for the West - Potts is a great athlete not a great QB. Also sort of amazing but the 3rd string QB on the East was the best QB on the field all night - might have been nice to see what the second and third string QB on the West would have done.

Lance Mitchell has zero game sense - great athelete - needs some football brains - his 2 interceptions on 4th down and long cost the WEST 50 yards and likely the game - ever heard of knocking the ball down on long passes on 4th down - geez. What do they teach at Muir - no wonder Muir constantly underperforms. He also needs to learn how to tackle too - stop ganbing jersey and put a hit on - you are a big kid. He has great potential - but needs to be a ton smarter football-wise.
why didn't i see josh parrish and connor berry out at the HOFG? i went to support my fellow SP teammates and came back sorely disappointed in a rather sloppy penalty ridden second half. Lance Mitchell Looked very strong for the west side and would be my choice for MVP if there was one
game day has arrived!!!!!!!! GOOOO WEST!!!!!!
All is quiet on the WESTern front.
west is gonna get kill tomaro.
EAST!!
Anon,
None taken. I am sure Zion is fast and IM not taking nothing away from him. I wish he was on the West Squad. But, we will be ok with other great talented players.
Coach DAWG
Coach Alonso,
No disrespect,
but no one on the west or the east is faster than Zion. Good luck to you and the WEST,
The West has plenty of speed at wide outs.
It's really too bad Zion Babb isn't playing because that would have opened up the whole west offense. There's no way anyone can stick him one on one. He's already training in Michigan, running with the one's.
Fred,
Is it possible to purchase a copy of the video high-lights tape from Friday's game?
There will be video highlights from Friday's game available on Saturday morning.
I hope UCLA dont let Brian Soumakian,(TC) West team, get away.
Good luck Brian.
Coach DAWG
It's too bad that Harris from Duarte and Hess from Arcadia are not playing because that would have given us some size up front.
How does UCLA let someone like Peterson get away???
Is anyone filming the game?
Peterson,
Hope you have a great game. No matter what happens, you are a winner! Going to utah will be great for you and your future.
Sorry to hear about your step father.
