Hey Galetti,

Are you the only guy working at the Star-News? I don't mean to be negative, but I don't see any other bylines out there? Is there only one sports writer? And if so, when did the Midland Valley News' budget get bigger then yours?

New York said:

Whoah. No need to fill it now.

ScottG said:

Yes, Anon, there will be plenty of blogging on the other sports as soon as coaches get back from vacations and are reachable so we can get info.
I believe New York got on me a few weeks back for this, but when I have stuff to put up, this blog will be filled with volleyball, tennis and volleyball.

New York said:

Galetti,
Nice work. Any word on whether or not I can have the exclusive for the Monrovia-Arcadia game?

Scott, I think you're doing a great job and know you'll get around to covering everything.
But just because some of the "other sports" star the week after football does it mean the "other sports" shouldn't at least have a place for followers of those sports to post?

ScottG said:

Anon, sorry you seem to have a problem with how we're covering a sport that begins this week and not covering sports you admit to not liking or, at least, think are lesser sports. I suppose you wouldn't be happy over at Freddie's blog either than.

Anon...gutless...punk said:

Scott, you're right...you have never actually stated that the "other sports" are less important than football. I happen to think that football is by far the most important high school sport and fully understand the priority it gets in media coverage. But what’s up with this?
* FOOTBALL: Games that make you go hmmm
* PREP SPORTS WRITERS STILL NEEDED
* FOOTBALL: Time to put on our thinking hats, or guess
* FOOTBALL: Just a few more days before Week 0
* FOOTBALL: Rio Hondo Prep has one thing on its mind, a title
* FOOTBALL: The Backus era set to begin
* FOOTBALL: Smith one half of Moors' potent one-two-punch
* FOOTBALL: Matadors out to show they belong in Almont
* FOOTBALL: Mustangs have eyes on Pacific title
* FOOTBALL: Ruedaflores misses first day of practice
Nine out of the last ten threads started have been about FOOTBALL and the one that wasn’t about FOOTBALL was looking for “writers” to cover….my guess is FOOTBALL!

Anything new with Alhambra today?

New York said:

Less popular and less exciting does not equal less important.

ScottG said:

Anon, nobody on here said anything about the other sports being less important.

New York said:

Scott,
Please keep football at the top of the blog page. Remember the blackberry issue...

Anon...gutless...punk said:

Scott...thanks for the update. I look forward to the previews of the less important sports.

ScottG said:

Anon 12:08, there's an earlier post on girls volleyball and we're going to be previewing both volleyball and water polo soon.
Football is the only sport starting early.

New York said:

They're all high school boys so either team can win, right? O-Cat, I got a laugh out of your statement, though, about Muir LETTING OC stay in the game. Muir may not have much of a choice about that, but Muir will have a lot going in their favor, especially if OC breaks the record the week before. At that point, OC would be riding high and possibly overlook Muir.

If Lompoc beats OC, then either OC will be pissed and take it out on Muir the following week, or MUIR will smell blood in the water and takes these guys out.

Anon...gutless...punk said:

Have all schools in this area dropped everything except football? Or has the Star News just stopped covering everything except football?

ScottG said:

Stang Fan, I was holding off on that one until later in the week since the game is next week, but I'll make a post about that game.

Some OC news for the Muir fans:
There's no way the Lions, riding a Southern Section-record-tying 46-game win streak, will be as powerful as last season. But are they still better than everyone else in the Tri-Valley League, the Northwest Division and perhaps California's Div. III?

Probably. Make that definitely if you ask Stanford-bound receiver Chris Owusu, Oaks Christian's top returning player.

"We don't have as many stars, but we've got a lot of great players, and we're practicing harder this year than we did last year," Owusu said. "We're still a team to reckon with, and our plans really haven't changed - we still want to go undefeated, win CIF, go to state. All the things the past teams have done, we can still do."

Owusu, who runs a 10.65 in the 100 meters and is considered the area's fastest player, is among a group of key returnees that include OL Trace Biskin (committed to Arizona), sophomore RB/LB Malcolm Jones and QB
Chris Potter, who makes the switch from WR.
Potter is taking over for Clausen, who holds the state record with 146 touchdown passes, 49last season as Oaks Christian finished 15-0.

If Potter, headed to Boise State as a WR, is feeling the pressure, he isn't showing it.

"Actually, it's exciting because I got a chance to learn so much from Jimmy Clausen," Potter said. "He helped me out a lot, especially the mental part of the game."

Oaks Christian opens Aug. 31 against visiting Lompoc, and that should be a big one, as the Lions look to break Canyon's and Temple City's co-record for most consecutive victories.

"That record of 47 in a row is our No. 1 priority right now," Owusu said. "That's basically all we talk about in practice. That first game we're going to be so pumped up. We're practicing so hard just to get that record the first week."

If Muir comes out and makes a statement on offense they can keep it close in the first half with their athletesism they might have a chance, but if they fall into the trap of feeling defeated and depend on their great running back it will be a long night. All of the players will have to be on the same page in order to break down the confidence of Oaks Christian. Oaks Christian still has a few good players that can take over a game and they will play as a team as long as Muir lets them stay in the game. If they put together the confidence that got them into the finals last year it could be lights out again by half time.......(from your friendly correspondant..O-Cat.

Can someone comment on the Muir/Oaks Christian game. Will Muir be more competitive this year. Or will they role over as they did last year about halfway through the first quarter.
How is OC expected to be this year? They lost virtually all of their stars from last season. Or should I ask how did they recruit in the last couple of years? Any predictions Muir faithful?
