FOOTBALL: Where's the beef?
Question: Who will be the king of the trenches this season?
Jonathan Silva (Alhambra) OL/DL.
A first-team All-Almont League selection a year.
Dan Scheper OL/DL, Alex Reitnouer, OL/DE (St. Francis).
Expected to be a force for the Golden Knights.
Der' Rel Hannah, OT, Joseph DeLeon, OL/DL (Muir).
Expected to open holes for Willie Youngblood.
Anthony Boykins, OL/DL, Kenny Phillips, OL/DL (Pasadena).
Young, but talented sophomores.
Matt Matsuda, OL/DL, Francisco Gomez, DE/OL, Ryan Lara, OL/DL (San Gabriel).
Matadors trying to fight off opponent's bulls.
Caz Wolter, DL, Greg Fisher, DL (Maranatha).
Top returning linemen for Minutemen.
Keep in mind, I didn't see any linemen this summer. They weren't at the passing leagues.
Feel free to chime in on others.

Thank God we have a common interest, thank you for sharing, you're a good author. Hope to see more of your articles. Juno sincere.

Erecting a Mosque at Ground Zero has to really be the un thought thru plot in the history of humankind, I definitely suspect it is purposely designed, at very best, to insight controversy. I am no conspiracy theorist and yet this really is either shameful or wicked, quite likely both of these. alana
T shirts have always been a way of making a statement or a protest. The Hippie movement relied on the t shirt to make a statement thru their distinctive tie and dye, batik and psychedelic tees.
The brand especially offers jeans for women of all ages and choices at affordable rates. These designer pants feature five pockets with back pockets that have star embroideries. These jeans also offer low rise, boot cuts, and pre-attached belts with some of the stylish pants.
And stop using that lame leftist straw man to try to justify it. No one has told the Muslims that they can’t build a mosque. Those of us who oppose are saying “don’t do it THERE.” There are zoning ordinances across the nation that dictate where various businesses and other organizations can build. This is no different. There has already been discussion in NY about allowing this bunch to put the mosque somewhere else. But now that Obama has (again) stuck his nose in where it doesn’t belong, things are escalating out of control.
Anthony Boykins is a former player of mine and i can tell you he might have talent but he gives up in the long run i played line with him and he will give up when the going gets tough
P Finchamp: Thanks for dragging me into this. As I’ve stated before, I have the utmost respect for the football program you’ve got going at RHP. To do the things you’ve accomplished with the size of your student body shows nothing but commitment from your coaching staff and players. I will avoid making any comments about the upcoming match against you. I don’t need to fuel the fire and besides we’ve got to play on that cow pasture you call a football field.
Right now we need to concentrate on the rematch we’ve got against St. Margaret’s. This will be a good indicator on where this year’s minuteman is.
Onewhoknows-
I'm not sure what that comment with maranatha playin longer than rhp has to do with anything but congradulations that you made it to the div. 13 championshiop and lost not only that game but to rhp. Besides I wonder if maranatha had played aquinas what that score would have been
One Who Knows--
Okay New York stay out of my business, I don't need any help from you (he, he ,he). The Maranatha faithful are at it again--you really should check with Tom S. The flambouyant statements coming out of your camp have never served you well. As for the rest....what New York said. Thanks for the block NY!
One Who Knows?
Well, Finchamp is the champion for RHP. I say my piece for the real MHS. As such, I know that there is a huge difference between making it to the finals and actually winning it. If you want to talk about NFL teams, you should take a look to see how the runner-ups typically do the following year...not very well.
I don't know much about Poly, but I'm sure Finchamp will.
You and all the other Maranatha fans are right in recognizing the achievement of making it to the finals, but it is ludicrous to make a comparison to RHP, especially in a year that they beat you convincingly. Actually, the guy said Maranatha reaching the finals was more impressive than RHP's track record. So I guess RHP had a "down" year but still beat Maranatha during Maranatha's best year ever...
New York -
RHP has lots of titles, thats great - congratulations. Maybe you can give us some tips, we play Poly on 9/21 -
I think lovefootball's point was MHS has come from the bottom of the standings to the top in two seasons - like Walsh did when he started with the 49ers. We all know how many titles Green Bay and the Rams have... even the 49ers fortunes changed with time - - - I don't think you would put your money on either of them to win the Super Bowl now - would you?
I remember the old MHS teams and the times there were not enough players to field a team. These MinuteMen are not your fathers MinuteMen -
As far as past glories and MHS losing in the finals by 1 point, if I remember correctly - RHP's last game was 11/17 and MHS played until 12/9.
I guess it made Thanksgiving vacation plans easier at RHP though-
Probably because they take so much time to worry about it.
"Line Play" and the "running game" are never a worry at TC...
I played the line and as far as Nick Fry he was 1st team center RHL and 2nd team Pasadena Star News, and was the only Jr starter on the line, and was moved up to the Varsity as a sophomore to dress out as a backup center after every JV game. The Line is the pit and everything is always moving and we all miss blocks and hold that football. This year I plan to see another great job by Fry and the rest of Temple City lineman and we will see a great runing game this year.
Part of creating a good scouting report is the ability to combine a mosaic of information.
New York--
It is always nice to be an enigma but alas I have let some of it out.
So that's why you knew so quickly where EJ is now...it all comes together.
Then LaVerne would really be out of the question...I suppose you may be referring to Princeton or SoPas, though?
New York--
You do good work. Oxy. Gotta meet you someday.
Prinecton, Oxy or SoPas...
New York--
Can't do that...I bleed Orange and Black and talk Tiger Football if you catch my drift.
Paul,
Don't overlook Pomona and CMC. While they don't have the athletic emphasis that the Ivies do, they can be wonderful places for football players to get a world class education and make lifetime friends with some braniacs.
love the game--
Thanks for asking about my son. Yes he is looking to play in college. Doing stuff like putting together the DVD highlight film at present. It's Prep League though and few college programs draw from D-X thru D-XIII levels. He has received interest from the likes of Grinnell, Colorado College, Menlo, Occidental and several more at the NCAA D-III level.
Letters from Brown, Columbia and Colgate too. But the fact is that these letters go out to many kids--maybe as many as 3,000. The interest from Ivy League schools is nice and based on PSAT and SAT scores he has posted. As New York will tell you, playing Ivy League ball would be fantastic but it also comes with the tag, "careful what you wish for." Playing for Brown in Providence might be swell but it's the class work and educational demands you best be prepared for.
At the D-I level Washington, Univ. of Oregon and USC have reached out and made contact. At that level (at least in his present stature) he is being considered as a kicker. He is an outstanding kicker and I only saw two others last year that I feel had the edge on him, Kelly from Monrovia and Delahooke from Maranatha. We at RHP were all too happy to limit Delahooke to a single kick off in the match up last year and the same for the year before. D-I schools love kickers with dimension and clearly Trevor can run well, hit and even pass. He would be capable of playing as much more than a kicker at the D-III level.
It is funny to try to say that a team making it to the finals once and LOSING, no matter how young the football program is (how young is it?), would be as impressive as a dynasty that has filled its trophy case with CIF titles and consistently beats the team that has one finals appearance.
p finchamp
I'm just wondering is your son lookinf to play ball at a higher level? and if so where? Also i do know more than a few boys from your program that have played together since 6th grade, so maybe not 8-10 years just 6. That has to help. But, unlike other's i think it's great you can retain so many kids. Good for them and good for your school.
lovefootball--
I'll do you the favor of a reply as your remarks must have been directed to me not anonymous.
I took issue with your statement that I quoted, nothing else. You reference an older team being supplanted by one that has had one year of success! It is not an older team, they are all HS kids. Furthermore, it just goes to show how much validity some people put into blog posts when someone says the same group of guys have been playing together for 8 to 10 years. That post was by Anonymous and was semi-correct in its flavor. Fact is that these kids played against each other growing up, not together. For example my son is playing with two of his teammates from his Indian team dating back to 1995. There were 6 teams that competed against each other growing up--all named after bodies of water. So they have been playing together as the team they are today since junior high but not 8 to 10 years. Robert Sharp was on my son's team for many years.
Now seriously who uses the term Babe? Guess I struck a cord. And do guys use that term, nope. I did go back and read the earlier post, perhaps you should. I'm not getting defensive at all just trying to reel in the enthusiasm that leads to comments like the one previously posted that I took issue with. I know the game well enough to know that coach Murphy would have preferred that that statement not be made--ask him.
Finally the issue with transfers. Like you I wish the best for all kids. Often the problem is with a parent that "big times" them. They show promise at a young age and decide that RHP is too small and they won't get the recognition they will need to make it to college D-I level. Sadly many end up with much less playing time at a Loyola when they could have thoroughly enjoyed their HS experience by playing for RHP or Maranatha for that matter. I'm sure loyal Maranatha follower Tom S will tell you, my posts on this blog are seldomly confrontational and are either factual or intended to bring someone down off their high horse. Sorry you took offense but the statement was priceless and I couldn't let it slip by.
Caz Wolter and Greg Fisher of the Maranatha Minutemen played mostly on the O line last season.
And they both rock.

First let me say there is no place for anyone to question or insinuate RHP is unchristian in any way, shape, or form. RHP is a great school with great kids, a great faculty, and a fruitful tradition. SGV is blessed to have an institution like RHP.
That said - Babe, go back and read what "lovefootball" wrote slowly with your college All-American dictionary. He/she thinkgs RHP is a great school with a great program built over many years. I don't know much about the school so I can't comment on reports the kids are coached together as a team for 8-10 years, but one must wonder what would happen if the team only practiced together for 1 year?
Anyway, don't wory about poor Coach Murphy - no one is in a lather (are you?). We are excited about our young program and the progress our fine coaches and players are making. Rumor had it that there were starters on the MinuteMen that hadn't even played organized football before last season!?!
Listen, we are also excited about the success you have had in the past - kids doing well, learning to play together, growing up on the same team for 10 years and representing the things that make this country great.
It's all good. So don't get all defensive with MHS making such amazing progress, and don't get flustered when your kids start transfering after junior high - we would love to have 'em.
prep league
Rio Hondo Prep...original beginning in 1931 as the Boys Christian League. RHP is so low-key and self-effacing (two hyphens in one sentence?) it surprises me often. One might say its history puts it in the books as one of the most enduring and endearing organizations in the SGV but I best be careful should they think I am bragging.
Minuteman Fan
If I recall correctly you are a woman. Yes I took the class on "assume" and post nothing of regret. No one making big prognostications over here. From your camp we have the early "all the sweeter when we beat you stuff." I'm glad women are blogging it's just that I know they have never played the game and it helps if you have done so, if you are posting with swagger.
Anonymous
Christian through and through--Jesus Christ as Savior. Not a curriculum course and no required chapel however. Remember this group started in 1931 as the Boys Christian League.
finchamp
from my understanding RHP really doesn't teach the gospel during school. but teaches good moral behavior, and some "christian" like values. So which is it do you guys teach that Jesus is their Savior or what? not that it matters for football just wondering
hey boys there are somewomen who love football and do understand the game.. so watch what you say. some of us know more than you "men". anyway keep blogging it makes me happy to see you guys getting all worked up about your schools.
If folks are this wound up about the RHP-Maranatha game in August - then what will October bring - and can we remember as the blogging really heats up that the players (kids) read what we adults write - can we keep it positive where the kids are concerned - and Finchamp - not so nice with your assumptions about a certain blogger being a woman - you know what happens when you assume...
finchamp
Your comments about Rio Hondo Prep and God are interesting. How would you characterize its theology? I've always wondered what a Kare was. I can't find anything on the school's web site indicating it's a Christian school, but I've always found it a fascinating place.
Um I don't need to watch film to know about fry, I went through his missed down blocks on the pulling guards' head-up men and dan yang did not miss many assignments, in fact, his biggest problem was holding he got called for holding a lot but he rarely missed a block or needed help remembering an assignment. As a lineman, I knew the line calls and assignments. During practice and the game it was apparant that fry needed help from smith and yang to know the assignments, don't believe me? ask them.

Yup, you get it. It's not easy sitting back as a VERY interested parent and allowing people to school your kid in something you (may) know better. That is the magic I have recognized over the past 5 years. I'm not sure it would work without their weekly club meetings and focus on God (which they do from kindergarten thru their Senior year). "Rule the world" I hear what you're sayin' but those other Christian schools pull our kids away early to places like Thousand Oaks (OC). Actually many of the local schools benefit from early Kare Youth League involvement. Wherever they go, however, it is unlikely that they will ever have a more stringent adherance to doctrine demanded of them than at RHP.
RHP
You guys should be great your team plays together for 8-10 years. ( don't they start playing in 2nd grade?).any team no matter what the size, has to be good after all that time playing together. i'm not taking anything away from your program. but most high school varsity teams change player every year. you guys just move up some "new " players. I do beleive this acounts for 11 cif runs. Good for you. Just be aware that give you a edge over some schools that draw from many other grammer schools. as a fomer coach ( diff sport) i'ld love to have a strong group of players over a 8-10 year period... I'ld rule the world.....

Whooooa there hold on. I like the name (lovefootball) but it doesn't really mean "understand football." And your use of the word "excited" is certainly the operative term, isn't it? Let's not get in a lather over those statements either. As a longtime football fan, former player, and college All-American (eeeww finally let that out) let me at least take issue with your statement, "as impressive as winning 11 CIF titles was, it is not as impressive as how fast MHS has developed a program and advanced to the CIF Finals." Poor coach Murphy, it's too late for that statement to be pulled back!
There are numerous bloggers that have and will continue to "take on" Maranatha because of the ...posture of so many MHS bloggers. Yeah, Tampa Bay's 2003 Super Bowl victory kinda makes one forget about the storied franchises of Cowboys, Steelers, Packers and Raiders. Let's see, one winning season and a trip to the final games and still no crown? Hum, that's bound to make an interesting comparison to 11 of them. Your parallel of MHS' one year run eclipsing 11 RHP Championships makes me wonder what's in the Pasadena water supply 'cuz I'm drinking it too.
matt matsuda is a STUD! a bit undersized to be a offensive lineman at the next level. but he has the brain, heart, and technique to get it done. He can do any snap (ie: long, under center, shotgun, or piston) I'm glad he made the list. Look for him to be doing big things for the matador offense.
I think all will agree one of the biggest games this season will be the MHS v. RHP contest on 10/5. 11 CIF championships is an impressive record for RHP, but it is wise not to spend too much time living in past glories - I believe RHP will tell you, as impressive as winning 11 CIF titles was, it is not as impressive as how fast MHS has developed a program and advanced to the CIF Finals.
The players are excited, the coaches are excited, and the fans are excited. Will it be a great season for the older team or will it be the beginning of the passing of the torch?
prep fan--
I stand corrected. I was informed last night of what you posted. I took the pregame talk of "we're going to crush you" "you won't know what hit you" too far.
mhs supporter
Not only are you putting yourself up for a letdown, you're slightly delusional. You should be happy if Maranatha even puts points on that big black scoreboard at RHP's "black hole."
The Maranatha player never apologized for any trash talking. There was no trash talking, he went in to congratulate the RHP players of a great game. He actually gained a lot of respect from the RHP players. Especially after they were dominated 50-0.
If you are going to talk about the best o-linemen. You have to mention Chris Tosello from La Canada. The team will most likely struggle but Tosello has been a trusty takle for LCHS since his sophomore year. He's quick, strong and a leader. He's also 6'2 250...for now.
On the information that I got from Coach Murphy, Vander Laan is listed as a tight end and Flewelling is listed as a fullback.
MHS supporter--
You must be a woman---that's not a dig. Your postings fuel the set up that has so disappointed Minuteman fans in recent years. The RHP guys have been hearing a lot of talk out of MHS over the past years and to no avail. MHS actually did a little smack talking at RHP a few years ago however my son informed me that they came into the RH locker room afterwards and apologized. Rio Hondo will continue to do its thing regardless of all the hype.
dguerrero -
I'm glad to hear that Rio Hondo is going to have one of it's best teams. That will make defeating them a whole lot sweeter for MHS. I'm not saying it IS going to happen but THIS YEAR, it WILL be a game!
I don't see how David Vanderlaan and Tom Flewelling were not mentioned on your list of Linemen from MHS. Every lineman returns for the Minutemen! Cannot wait for the Rio Hondo Game!
If 11 CIF championships doesn't say enough for RHP then what will? How about beating Maranatha year after year? Or maybe the fact that they have 40 men in the entire school and every year they field a playoff-bound team? I can't remember the last time the Kares missed the playoffs. As far as this year's line is concerned it's one of the biggest and most talented I've seen in years. As sophomores these boys stepped it up and got some playing time in the playoffs. I'm excited about with they can do as a unit. They have THE BEST coaches in the division, i'm stoked.
this is true, forgot about the mono issue... my bad on that part... but yes, i believe that becher will be a big part of the oline this year... as far as doug, yeah, cant even talk about him till he gets his pads on..haha.. but much improved i will say about him... as far as nick missing blocking assignments, um that really didnt happen a lot to tell u the truth... dan yang missed alot more than he did... just watch film review, oh i mean if u can, and u will see that nick was one of the better kids on the oline... experience goes along way, and becher doesnt have that much.... he is a hard hitter but lacks technique in both areas of blocking... im sure TC coaches are going to put him on the front 5 no matter what, but hey, nething can happen and neone can step up and prove themself right? once pads are on, all that spring and summer stuff is out the door...
And as far as experience goes, while Nick Fry may have a year's worth of experience on the line, he was definitely not as solid as he could have been. He missed blocking assignments many times during games and it was mostly due to Broadnax's deft running that his weakness was overlooked by opposing teams. So even though he was the experience he still has a lot of way to go. And as far as Doug Howard, he was very injury prone last year so not much can be said. He was fine last year up until the pads came out and then he was out most of the season for one injury or another. The anchor of the line this year, if he plays both ways, will definitely be Eric Becher. 2 years of experience playing Offensive linemen makes him better as a D-lineman and two years of varsity play has given him the instinct that will help him with his blockign as an Offensive lineman. Becher will keep that O-line strong.
Correction on the Correction on Eric Becher, He started against Arroyo because of guard Cary Smith's absence due to mono which had kept him off the field from mid july until right before arroyo. Smith was going to be used as reserve only but following Becher's ankle injury, he was sent in. Smith, Danyang, and Brian Soumakian were featured linemen in the Star News and it was easily inferred that they were the three who were set in stone to hold the line. Becher used as guard was because he was the only able lineman who could hold his own that was not yet being used at another spot.
correction on eric becher..
he actually started against arroyo as a guard last year but was injured on the opening drive... dang yang then proved himself to start... remember, TC always comes out with a good O-line... with names like Doug howard, Nick Fry and Eric Becher, you can expect another good turnout... Not to mention they will have 5 seniors playing on the front five... to give you an idea, Howard is 6'3 280... cant wait to see how he turns out once the pads are issued! Becher doesnt need any introduction and neither does Nick Fry... they are both ready to start and pound the D-line... sure Fry is only 5'8 220, but he is quicker this year and has a ( ill run through a brick wall ) state of mind... expect to see a sound running game once again for TC
Maranatha's Tom Flewelling,David Vanderlaan and Chris Saragain(sp) played great last year look for them to hit harder and with more intensity this year... GO MHS
andrew mac from arcadia was a senior last year and made all league Lars Guillermo made all league as well but he is coming back along with fellow starter sean roose
Finchamp, I was joking with the little man joke, but anyway, he who blogs the most has nothing to do with how we schedule games. You don't see many Muir bloggers here, but we cover them as much as anyone because they perform on Friday's and are one of the signature schools in Pasadena. We look at the size of the school, its history in the sport, and how they've done and are expected to do in determining our coverage. We've done a good job in recent years covering RH Prep in relation to other small schools. Maranatha came onto the scene last year after reaching the championship, and deserved its coverage, as did La Salle. In earlier years, we wrote a lot about Pas Prep and Poly, and I'm sure Scott will continue to do so.
ScottG,
Yeah, that maxpreps roster for arcadia is incorrect because if you look at the season prior to last year (2005), he is listed as a junior.
FYI, arcadia's stud lineman next year is Lars Guillermo.
Anon--
I addressed the match up you speak of on another thread earlier this week...however what I do see is another convincing win by the Kares. I really do not expect a shut out but if it happened it would be epic! The game is at RHP in the black hole--arguably the toughest place for any team to come into in the SGV.
ScottG
Thanks for accepting my ribbing in good fun. Here are some names, Dinius, McNeese, Boyle and Gatdula. Wouldn't trade one for a player at the other "small" school you guys tout!
Fred J
I am not complaining, really. Clearly however he who blogs the most about their school will receive more attention from you guys and I think that is wrong. Rio's record speaks for itself but you guys slant toward Maranatha because of??????????
I assume your 5'6" posting has something to due with RHP's usual small guy scenario....an odd comment.
P Finchamp, No I haven't been to Rio Hondo Prep, but I'm sure I will in due time.
If you have some RHP names you'd like added to the list, let me know.
Finchamp, I'm 5-6 so I know something about little man syndrome, but give Scott a break, the football preview issue is three weeks away and you're complaining about coverage.
finchamp-
what do you think about the rhp-maranatha game this year. will it be another blowout or will it be a game this year? and can the kares hold them again to "0" points for the third consecutive year??
Real, I saw it on MaxPreps.
ScottG,
Andy Mac graduated...the roster is incorrect. What roster are you looking at?
Scott
You ever been down to Rio Hondo Prep? Do you know where it is? Clearly you know nothing about them and that's fine. However, stay off the bandwagon when it comes around to mid-season and remember that neither you nor Fred acknowledged them in any way in the pre-season.
BigMLover,
you are forgetting about the two offensive tackles for SP, Mat Aquino (6'1" about 250 lbs.) and Charles Dennis (6'3" 225 lbs.) who should be able to protect Troast pretty well.
hey anonymous-
if you look carefully they list two minutemen linemen, what do you want them to do list the whole line???
At least right now, the RHL lineman pickin's are slim. We'll see how they shake out by the start of league play. You know that TC will have a name in this discussion by then...they always do.
first of all nick has only been a member of 1 of tc's rhl titles.the guy that tc fans should be looking out for is eric becher who is an actually a member of the two time rhl champs run along with will do. he along with Do will be 3 year varsity starters and if backus is smart will get some time on the oline too, since the last 2 years he has been just a d-lineman.
the real hsfbfan, Wilmm was inadvertently left in from the previous post, but Andy Mac was listed as a junior on a roster I saw from last year.
There are no rosters out yet for this year that I've seen.
ScottG,
Andy Mac was a senior last year.
Eric Willim plays WR.
how about some Maranatha linemen?????
and how about NICK FRY from the back to back rio hondo league champs TEMPLE CITY he was one of the reasons Broadnax had over 2,000 along with the mooney play calling run the ball 50 times a game and hope our line pushes theirs back so our backs can get through the hole. and Nick Fry was apart of that line. And will do so for Williams Do this year.
scott g just to start helping u out a little bit. eric wilhm is a db/wr not a lineman
There you go kiddies. Enjoy.
By the way, since I didn't see any linemen over the summer, your help adding to the list is encouraged.
