FOOTBALL: Who will be the 2007 Star-News Player of the Year?

| | Comments (74) |

Fred Robledo likes to call it the high school Heisman, but we'll call it the Star-Newsman

As the season begins, which player will emerge as the area's best player?

The Star-Newsman

RECEIVERS
Dietrich Riley, St.Francis - This kid could be one of the best receivers in the San Gabriel Valley. It'll be fun to see what he can do with his tremendous talent.

Michael Harrison, Pasadena - Harrison has the speed to be one of the best receivers.

RUNNING BACKS
Willie Youngblood, Muir - Youngblood has a chance to end his high school career with a bang. He is a dangerous runner out of the backfield. He rushed for 1,439 yards and 13 touchdowns last year.

Anthony Brown, Alhambra - Brown is one of the most explosive players in the SGV. Amassed 1,058 yards and 15 TDs a year ago.

Dushine Smith - His name may be Shawn, be he told me he goes by Dushine. Smith is part of a potent duo in the Alhambra backfield. Had 1,301 yard and 17 touchdowns last season.

Will Do, Temple City - From what I've heard from many people, this guy will be about as easy to tackle as an oncoming car. He has the size and quickness to do wonders for a Rams team searching for the next Dwight Broadnax.

Mark Love, Maranatha - Led the Minutemen with 1,651 yards and 21 touchowns last season.

QUARTERBACKS
Tyron Crockom, Pasadena - Can throw the ball or tuck it away and run forever. Whether he can lead his team to the Pacific League championship or not will be the question.

Chase Rettig, La Salle - A talented sophomore with a big arm, Rettig could be a force in the area for the next three seasons.

Kevan Walker, Arcadia - He was one of the top wideouts in the area a year ago. Now Walker is the man throwing the rock. And over the course of the summer, he was throwing it well.

Austin Heyworth, St. Francis - Good things could be in store for this youngster with a powerful and accurate arm.

Other players in the running....
Reuben Thomas, Muir
Jonathan Troast, South Pasadena
Matt Haggard, Monrovia
Kevin Garcia, St. Francis
Matt Shilz, Maranatha
Alex Clash, Maranath
Morgan Hatch, Temple City
Trevor Finchamp, Rio Hondo Prep

Tknox,
You have no clue what you are talking about!!! You think RHP only accepts the best athletes from Kare Youth League. That is not true at all. That doesnt work because the good athletes want to be heavily recruited and therefore go to bigger schools. Tobi Umodu, Brian Hunter, Jon Cornell, Brandon Bennet, Mike Harris, all guys whom I played with when I was in KYL have all moved on to D-1 schools. They were the best athletes and they did not join RHP. The freshman QB at Monrovia, Thropay, was the best athlete in his age level and he didnt go to RHP. So to say that RHP does not enroll kids because they arent the best atletes is absurd. If you look at the 2005 championship game, Campbell Hall had about 3 or 4 guys headed to Div-1 schools. RHP-none. Campbell Hall was a much more athletic team than RHP. We've done fine without the "respect" your talking about and i'm pretty sure we'll be ok if we still dont get it.

well spoken... i have a few friends on rhp and your right on the nose.. after playing tackle ball since 2nd grade you should be great. I play at a local high school where most guys have only played tackle since 9th grade.RHP is like a pro tea compared to us.

Tknox said:

finchamp,

That's my point,..."no one gets cut." No one gets cut because they are brought there to play football. They aren't enrolled if they aren't one of the more talented kids from the league. It would be pathetic to not be good with the recruiting set-up that RHP has. It just gets old that you continue to yell for respect for a school that is clearly training children from elem. school and then using a "CIF defined "unfair advantage" to enroll only the top football players for your team/school. Geesh, you guys are good, you should be...but, stop comparing yourselves to other schools that are following the rules.

No one says that your team isn't good, but the respect you're craving has to be earned.

P.S. most private schools have a large core of kids from the area. The school reflects the neighborhood. Then there are the other kids who come to those schools for various reasons.

This topic is a little old and depressing. It's depressing because we both know where Muir used to be but it's pretty clear where Muir is now. OC also schedules Diamond Ranch...They will schedule pretty much anybody. You guys were electric in the 1980's and EARLY 1990's but not since then. Your numbers are too low.

You did play Monrovia and we won the first game and you guys won the next year....so that makes us even for now....Now schedule us in your future and see the results....You may be the only one on this blog surprised at the outcome.

Stang fan said:

A lot has been recently mentioned regarding Muirs strength of schedule in the preseason. Playing the premier programs in So Cal is nothing new to the stang program. Muir recently been a punching bag for OC but in the past Muir has laid wipe to several perenial powerhouse opponents.
Dating back to the 87 season Muir hosted the preseason number one ranked team IN THE NATION and pulled off perhaps the greatest regular season shooker in school history. Since they have played Crespi during Russell White senior year. Also played Fontana and Rialto Eisenhower in their glory years before people in the inland empire had a choice of where to go to school. I was attended a game at Fontana HS and arrived well over an hour before game time to see their side nearly full. (Muir knocked Fontana off when they were a nationally ranked lead by Sulti Mc Cullough the year Brownfield returned for a one year stint). Muir also played Bishop Amat for several years and defeated them once on a miraculous final play which I saw. Follow this tp play Servite and not to mention Esperanza and Loyola. Oh and did I mention Los Alamitos also during their years of going to D1 finals. Oh wait it gets better how about LB Poly. The last game against them was a real embarassment but we tried.
So when you bloggers wish that your Monrovia could play Muir (we already have and it is not worth mentioning amongst these other schools) just take note of who the little school in NW Dena that suites up anywhere from 33 to 45 each year and many never really play is scheduling and who in "all" of the San Gabriel Valley should be admiring.
And have I mentioned how many Muir kids since the mid 80's have played on Sundays.
Enjoy your season bloggers and can't wait to hear that bell!

p finchamp said:

Pretty close. No one gets cut. Every kid at RH Prep suits up on either varsity or JV however. I think most private schools draw from all over don't you?

lovefootball--

The woman comment is to see if I draw anymore out which I finally did. Somewhere along the way someone got the impression I don't like Maranatha, not true. I will defend Prep however when I believe teams of lower calibre boost themselves above RH Prep when they don't merit that status. I have watched last year's game, including recently, and know full well that RHP best play flawless ball again to match up and beat Maranatha for the fourth time in a row. I do wish you a successful season sans the one game.

Mr. Mustang and Stang Fan,

Ruben (Bingo) will not lead Muir to no Pacific league title! He will be the reason you lose to one of the Burbank schools, Arcadia and lose to the DOGS in the Tussle! I believe Muir will take 4th in league because of the QB position. This is what passing league means, load the line of scrimmage against the Stangs and stop the run, because they can't pass! PERIOD! Muir's corners are very suspect (good at camps only) and the line backer crew is average at best. PHS and Muir's lines are both suspect and Burroughs is athletically challenge. Arcadia will rely solely on Kev Walker, which I think will not be enough by him self. I know the DOGS have question marks on the O-line and if that can be answered with positive play, nobody in this area can handle them! Period! I think the Central division is going to have a difficult time with our team speed as well. This is the first time in a long time PHS has more game breakers at skill positions than the Stangs. That was proved in passing league! Oh, the DOGS have first team QB (Tyrone Crockom), first team Running Back (Rashard McCord) and first team receiver (Michae "Trump" Harrison). The killer will be (JR) Devante "TuTu" LaFlore at full back! He is a big time player with big time ability. The "D" will be special! Enough said! Outside of the Don's which will be a killer upfront for the DOGS everyone else will deal with the fury of the PASADENA BULLDOGS! THIS WILL BE A GLORIOUS YEAR!

Sorry to be the one to suggest you may not know everything, but I'm not a female. I do love football and as far as your observation that loving does not mean understanding, well I guess I would have to leave that to those smarter than me to figure that one out.

I will say it was pretty impressive how you figured out that MHS envy joke. I bet you're a pretty sharp guy.

I like Mark Love and I'd keep an eye on Alex Clash too. I bet though that the POY isn't even on the list - might even end up being someone that plays both ways?

Good luck on your season and the playoffs.

Why don't we stop with the arrogance? Stop the boasting about RHP doing such miraculous things with a student body of 80.

It's not rocket science. If we all ignored the spirit of the blue book and built a school around a sports league, built teams from elementary school and kept them together through jr and high school, give them a private school education in an area that they don't live in to stay with the same team through HS...we'd all have powerhouse teams.

It is what it is. The football team is trained for years to win. The best athletes make the cut. It's a great opportunity for those kids who might not otherwise get a chance. RHP has a solid program...but really, shouldn't they?

Futbol said:

Before we start annointing QB's to POY status you need to make sure they have adequate receivers and vice verse. I have never seen a great reveiver w/o a QB and a grat QB w/o a receiver or two. I have to agree with you that Mark Love is the only Maranatha player who should be on Player of the Year list. As I’ve stated before, I have the utmost respect for the football program you’ve got going at RHP. To do the things you’ve accomplished with the size of your student body shows nothing but commitment from your coaching staff and players. I will avoid making any comments about the upcoming match against you. I don’t need to fuel the fire and besides we’ve got to play on that cow pasture you call a football field.
Right now we need to concentrate on the rematch we’ve got against St. Margaret’s. This will be a good indicator on where this year’s minuteman team is at.

Is the preview on AHS or SF going to be up anytime soon? I would like to see how my Apaches are doing and how the big time SF is doing as well.

I have read on Scout.com about Austin Daniels from Muir. I believe he participated in the well-known B2G camp and did very well. I believe Scout.Com also did an article on Arcadia player Todd Golper as well as the decommitment and commitment of Kevan Walker from Minnesota to UCLA. It's good to see some SGV kids getting some love from the national press.

Any words on Monrovia?

Lineman fan,
anywhere on the field is enemy territory when your linemen cannot at least stalemate the other side. There was a great 3 day camp in LB this year "Linemen Inc". Coaches from UNLV, UCLA, New Mexico, etc...teaching fundamentals and preaching old school one on one war. 14 to 18 age group. A great opportunity to compete and learn. I definitely agree...we need more guards switching to FB on short yardage, tackle eligibles on the goal line and centers, guards and 1/2 the universe pulling at one time. The funny thing is the muddiest, beat up, grass stained dude out there is often 100% happy as is. His respect (and your son's) will be earned by being good at what they do. No doubt greater recognition is warranted, but an 80 yard sustained ground-grinding war is only beautiful to those who know what it takes to make it happen. The line of scrimmage will teach your son lessons he can pocket and utilize far down the road.

Everyone, lets realize something shall we? I believe we shouldn't have a 2nd string div ? (something high up there) from Maranatha when you have such great programs like St. Francis, Arcadia, Muir, PHS, Monrovia...etc

Sorry, but thats my opinion.

I believe the running will come down to Walker, who is now committed to UCLA as well as Youngblood, Do, those two kids from Alhambra, and the QB from Pasadena.

Goldenarm said:

I am not sure if Backus intends to keep Will Do at outside backer full time and hand him the ball 20 times on Offense as well. Watching Do at LB iso through the binocs... shed the double-team and lead block, stuff the play, contain the outside threat and still step in to make the tackle - making it look ho-hum all the while, the fluidity and ease of it shows there is even greater potential in his play. Last season he picked up a opening game short kickoff, returning it for a TD. He looked like he was just casually jaywalking along at first...then see ya. Barring injury, and contributing on both sides of the ball...then again, the candidates have yet to make any opening statements...

I think that 'just wondering' is on the money. The skill positions don't make it on SC if the knuckle draggers don't get it done. Joe Montana didn't give a Rolex every year to his offensive lineman for nothing.

Take a mid-season look at the successfull teams and then find out who the players are with the broken fingers, strained knees, wrecked helmuts, and blood stained uniforms.

I think the award should rightly be given to a Defensive or Offensive lineman. These guys are the hardest working players enduring the most pain play in and play out.

I'm not quite so sure about that. Don't get me wrong, the potential is clearly there, but 2,700 total yards is, as Pac would say, "Straight Ballin'." You're killing me with this post at this point in the season. And two QBs from Maranatha neither of whom has posted big numbers? And three guys from Maranatha, a D-XIII school? Chances are it may boil down to a few players that play both sides of the ball.

To earn this award I feel you have to look at huge impact players and clearly those with some prospect of making it to D-I in college. Therefore with few exceptions (Landon Goodwell) I think you have to consider kids from programs like TC, St. Francis, Monrovia and Muir. Look I've got a great kid doing a lot of different stuff at RH Prep and I don't think he belongs on the list but let me suggest that this be brought up midway into the season, not now with little research put into the list of names appearing at the top. Geez if you're going to put Schilz on the list why don't you put Castro on it from RH Prep? At least Castro was 4-0 in his starts last year including a 37-0 victory over Maranatha with the other QB, Clash that is listed.

I would never suggest that Coach Mooney ran a mediocre program, especially since he consistently beat us with far fewer tools.

TC's absolute results don't stack up to those of the Hitchcock era, but few in the country do.

Mooney teams have pulled some big upsets going back to his days as OC with Maloney at San Marino.

I do think Backus is well positioned for success at TC. He was there during the DiFiori tenure (0-4 against Monrovia) but still had a semi-final appearance in 1998.

How in the world do you have back-up QB Matt Schilz of Maranatha and not have the starting Maranatha quarterback, Alex Clash. Is this a list of who you "want" to be in the running? Matt's a good kid but geesh, let him earn it.

Anonymous said:

New York,
You did a nice job breaking down TC's losses in the playoffs during the Mooney era sometime ago. Building on the recent post regarding complacency within the program, I agree. Mooney always wanted league titles not CIF titles. Backus will rescue the program from mediocrity and restore the Hitchcock philosophy.
