FOOTBALL: Who's the big catch in 2007?

| | Comments (49) |

Question: Who will be the top wide receiver this season?

Deitrich Riley, Kevin Garcia (St. Francis).
Help comprise a solid corps of receivers for Golden Knights. Riley looked quite impressive when I saw him at Hart High School.

Ryan Doeppel, Michael Palffy, (La Salle).
Both had solid summers for the Lancers.

Daro Johnson, (Monrovia).
Expected to lead Wildcats.

Ahmere Owens, Ruben Thomas, Marcus Graves, Marcus Thompson (Muir).
Owens led the Mustangs in receiving yards a year ago, but is vying for the QB spot. Thomas is also fighting for the starting signal-caller position, but is a natual at wideout. Graves and Thompson looked good when I saw them in Claremont.

Michael Harrison, Arness Ikner (Pasadena).
Could be recipients of many Tyron Crockom passes.

Eric Willm (Arcadia).
Ready to shine during his senior season.

Will Smiland, David Allen (South Pasadena).
Smiland showcased good hands during summer, while Allen is a good-sized target.

Andy Tholt (Gabrielino).
He may not get a lot of catches in the Eagles' run-oriented attack, but he has the talent.

Brian Kimbal (La Canada).
One of the few experienced skill position players for the Spartans.

Ian Campbell, Alex Clash (Maranatha).
Clash was the leading passer for the Minutemen a year ago.

Feel free to chime in on others.

of course rhp is great those 40 young men have played football together since 2nd grade. if you've played together that long you better be good. that's a huge advantage from other school's where you get new team mates every year. plus the plays are carried over each year ( with some small changes) which other area team has 80-90% od the boys played together for so long? none.. RHP is great at keeping the winning alive.

i concour on dguererro. as a fellow lineman and playing right next to him...im pretty sure maranatha has a lot to come up with this year. seein as the last three years combined score was 136-32 in RHP's favor

One of my favorite guys that never received the proper recognition--athletically that is, we all know you are a brainiac and that type of recognition was bestowed upon you. Come back and cheer on your boys and your former teammate TJF. Ohhh, one more shot at Maranatha in the black hole.

dguerrero said:

also, you should be more worried about how maranatha responds to the crowd, we wouldn't want a replay of two years ago would we?

dguerrero said:

As an rhp alum i might just make the trip from san diego back to SGV to see how my boys do against a maranatha team who has yet to truly impress me. and as far as the field is concerned, a regulation 360x160 ft, we should know... we helped build it with our own hands.

I have been waiting for this year since my son was a freshman 3 years ago. Part of the reason is how dominant they were as a group in 7th, 8th and 9th grade and they are all still together. They are as big as RHP has been in many years. They have solid veteran players at every position. I would be surprised if they had a close game in league. If they remain healthy I expect them to go undefeated in league.

Seeding in playoffs will be key but as I said before consider the 28-7 loss to Aquinas last year in the first round. Aquinas may have well been the CIF champs had they not given up 14 points in the last two minutes of their playoff game to the eventual champions. I'm fired up!

Here's what you'll hear from coach Drain. "I think we'll do pretty well this year if the guys execute the fundamentals."

p finchamp-
how do you see rhp doin this year in their regular season, and how do you see them doin in playoffs?

Sure to make a game this season. I will warn you in advance so we can hook up. NW Pas, not too much of a stretch since I'm coming from Altadena.

If Poly goes 2-8, as suggested by anon@12:15, they would probably need to lose to Flintridge, in addition to Marshall, Brentwood, Rio Hondo, Maranatha, Chadwick, and Campbell Hall (assuming they are able to beat Viewpoint and Webb). Is Flintridge going to be any good this year?

anon said:

i bet you that poly goes 2-8 this year if their lucky

I hear you, and I understand where you are coming from. Speed has always been apart of our legacy, that much is true. But to be completely honest with you, the past few years have not measured up to, speedwise, what this 07 team has the potential of. This is 'ol school Muir speed which is what gets my juices going.

Your question about the coaching staff is an absolutely legitimate one. I've read and heard a ton of negative stuff about the staff, and at times I too have been frustrated with them. However, from what I know and have heard, this current staff is coming into their own. They are some young guys, but they are Muir guys and all of them have played and learned at the next level. If this young staff can stick around for a few years, unlike the previous non-Muir guys (post-Crutch and pre-Howard) Muir has the potential to be a LA Times Top 25 team again.

Then again, I guess that's how everyone feels before the season starts. BTW Finchamp, would you mind making a trip to good 'ol NW Pasadena sometime this fall to check us out. I appreciate your unbiased and enlightened view here on this blog, and I'd love it if you came to check us out.

P, all in good time. We're still in the transition stage. It's being worked on. Besides, Fred isn't even back from Hawaii yet.

Thanks for asking though.

When do we get the Galetti picture at the heading? Are you guys at the SN having trouble touching up the photo?

p finchamp said:

Stang Fan--

Been a while since I yapped at ya. Let me have some fun with you...don't you remember the term "Speed Kills". Muir is unconscious with speed and they have been for a long time. You're in early preseason mode because you have seen these Mustangs running wild without contact and pads. Don't get me wrong, the potential with the Mustangs is usually among the best, but can coaching get the best out of them when it counts?

Anonymous said:

Poly still has an excellent coaching staff - they just won't have nearly as many solid players as last year.

p finchamp said:

Anonomous and Longhorn,

Forget about Poly this year. They lost 85% of their team to graduation. Yes the upcoming group has promise. RHP will remain a nemisis for every team in the Prep League forever. Cupcakes might include Webb or Calabasas Viewpoint (now in the Prep League)but I wouldn't bet on it. End of a strong one year stand, hummm.

Stang Fan said:

Muir's recievers are off the hook! Ahmere Owens (sr.), Marcus Graves (jr.), Austin Daniels(sr.), Marcus Thompson(sr.), Bingo Thomas (jr.) and now (if it's true) Myles Campbell(jr.)! Oh, don't let me forget about the Pacific League 100 meter champ Chris Dunlap (jr.). Are you kidding me? Speed, hands, great routes...Anonymous 4:33, you are not lying, this is BY FAR the best and FASTEST corp around. BTW, four of those guys are juniors. Wheeeeeeeeeeewww!

Then we still have Youngblood in the backfield. OMG, I can't contain my enthusiasm, I can't wait to see this team on the field.

LET'S GO STANGS!!!!!!!

Anonymous said:

I saw Poly in two passing league games, and unless they just happened to be missing all their key players on those days, it is going to be a very difficult season for the Panthers. Fortunately they have mostly cupcakes on their schedule, so they still should win a few games.

Longhorn said:

Speaking of Pasadena Poly. I'm interested in knowing a little thing about them, specifically their football team this year. I know they've got a couple 3 year returners (I think) and have a great Jr. class coming up, but what can we expect from them this year? Anyone got any thoughts or inside stuff?

ScottG said:

I think Football Junkie and Big Blue were victims of being linked from Aram's old site.

Answers to the Questions.
1. You're not in Kansas, you're in the West SGV. And if you want love for the East SGV, Freddie will hook you up on his new Tribune Blog.

Is this going to be all about the West SGV. East SGV wants some coverage Freddie. Get those Amat Bloggers they are the craziest...

WHERE'S ARAM AND WHO ARE YOU?

sfhs92 said:

Its not insecurity it is a fact that players leave Sf. Chris McCallister went to SF as did Lance Mitchell from Muir. Just to name a couple. If he stays he has a chance to be one of the best ever to wear the brown and gold.

Anonymous said:

sfhs92, what makes you so insecure about riley staying at sf?

sfhs92 said:

Riley is going to dominate this year if the qb can get him the ball. He was all league as a freshman. I just hope we can keep him at SF for all four years.

lc supporter said:

Poly's only 3rd year varsity returner, Pennington is a big kid (6'2'' 190) with decent speed. Could be a good reciever if his qb can get him the ball which was a bit of a struggle in the game against us that I saw.

P Finchamp said:

Tom S

My sincere best wishes to you guys this season, sans the RHP match up. Early word has it that RHP plans on leaving the water on all night the night before the game so it might be played in an inch of water! Hostility from Christian fans....surely you jest!!!

Tom S said:

P Finchamp:
Really looking forward to the RHP game but first we have the rematch with St. Margaret’s which will tell a lot about this years Minutemen team. As I posted before we really need to get the monkey off our backs and post a win against you. I’m not too concerned about Poly with all the seniors they graduated last year.
This years game will be more difficult for us with having to play on that area you all call a field and against a hostile crowd but I really believe we will take it to you this year. No blow out but looking forward to a good match up.
If I don’t feel too intimidated I’ll come over to the hill you sit up on at halftime and try and look you up.

I have had the priveledge of watching Kimball for La Canada and i see great hands, routes and run blocking (which he picked up blocking for all-area RB Lavelle Peterson).
Question is whether LC uses their Underutilized receiver.

ftblfan said:

ہ,

from my sources i heard that Patrick Greene switched over to WR...

how is Brandon Brooks looking so far??? is there anyone else at that spot???

ہ said:

ftblfan,
i think anyone including eric brooks thinks brandon brooks, his younger brother, can be a better prep athlete than him. on the other hand, Patrick Greene was the #2 TE last year and he is a proven athlete.

going back to WRs, i think Fred said it best: "They [monrovia] have, in my mind, one of the best returning receivers in Fernando Gonzalez along with Daro Johnson."

alhambra high has a big hole to fill at wide out because zion babb has left for the big ten.. but please dont sleep on there replacement Mitchel Crockom. The tall 10th grader doesn't have Babb speed but jumps and catches everthing...

P.S. Scott-

Rio Hondo Prep----the most successful football program in the San Gabriel Valley for the past 30 years, bar none. Mind you fellow bloggers I said most successful not best.

p finchamp said:

Galetti--

Had to groom Fred---looks like you are next. Think outside the box a little, don't overlook the Prep League. In my opinion, Maranatha's appearance in last year's final still does not merit your trumping the Prep League. Been a while since Maranatha has beaten the Prep League powerhouses RH Prep and Poly. Poly is expected to be down, RHP is stronger than last year. Sorry Tom S, while the Flintridge victory is noteworthy they have been down now for a couple of years and blanked by the two previously mentioned foes.

Anonymous said:

not really, eric brooks was gone last year too with his hurt ankle

ftblfan said:

how is Monrovia looking at the Tight End spot??? I know it must be hard to replace Eric Brooks

Anonymous said:

WOW! if Campbell leaves SF and goes to Muir, the mustangs have by far the best recieving corp and overall team speed in the area.

ScottG said:

Anon 11:03, if it's true, Campbell would be a huge impact besides Owens. I was impressed with him when I saw him a couple of weeks ago.

Kimbal is a great third year varsity player who really has some good hands. The only question is if LC can get him the ball.

Campanario said:

Thank you, Big M, for getting Nando's name in there. It's crazy he wasn't on the list to begin with.

And CB's out there: be careful. Daro Johnson is the defending RHL champ in the 100 and 200.

Is it zero week yet?

BigMLover said:

The 'Cats are bursting at the wideout spots...

Fernando Gonzalez is the ying to Daro Johnson's yang. He's a NCAA qualifier and has the interest of the west coast mid-majors. Also, Jr. Chris Carino will see a lot of action at the Slot position. The O coaches were very impressed with him during summer passing league.

The question for the 'Cats lies in the inexperienced QB spot...

Anonymous said:

Scott----according to a few rumors I think you are going to have to move Campbells name right beside Owens. If this is true what do you think his impact is.
