Mustangs/Bulldogs rivalry to be featured:
According to Pasadena coach Kevin Mills, FSN will air a national spotlight on crosstown rivalries, including Muir and Pasadena. The tentative date is Sept. 13.

Question:
What is the biggest prep football rivalry out there, and why?

Did most all football fans watch the Pats vs. Baltimore today? Incredible, I think Tom Brady and the Patriots are back!

Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

The Moors dominance of Keppel goes back further than a decade, but the Aztecs always had a couple bad mo's circulating at nose or middle backer - ready to remind you not to look at the scoreboard too early. It is good to hear the rivalry still lives -

One game at a time. Check. CIF playoffs. Check. League title? HELL NAH!!! Victory in the bowl?......Triple HELL NAH!!!

As I've said before you guys are improved and will make the playoffs. But, you'll lose to Dominguez, Burroughs, Arcadia, and Muir, then you'll get popped in the first round for an overall record of 6-5. But hey, that is better than 5-5....I guess.

LET'S GO STANGS!!!

Hey New York,

Keppel still plays Alhambra, and it's our biggest game of the year.
It has been lopsided as of late with AHS on a 10 year roll?
But every so often the kids on Hellmen Ave rise up and shock the Moorons, like when we embarrassed them when they celebrated their 100 year anniversary, district officials, Hollywood alumni, city officials all in the stands and the step children on Hellman Ave BEAT THEM!!!!
That took away many years of frustration and will always be a thorn in their butts..

It's "Adena high hey, we know we're good, Adena high hey!

I sure hope your right, cause it has not been much of a rivalry lately, like back in the day, the PHS crowd standing & cheeering "Beat John Muir Right On, Right On" and of course Muir's respone 'Beat Pasadena, Right on, Right on"

And that darn drumline from Muir playing that "beat" thru the whole game.

And lastly, running onto the the field at the Rose Bowl to "Bring Home the BELL"

Oh hOw sweet it is!!This could be the year the bell comes home, but let's take it 1 game at a time....

Dawg 87 Style said:

Stang Fan, I agree and the Tussle is not a rivalry until we (The Dogs) start winning and I mean starting this year! One game at a time, because it's important to the Pasadena program to win the leauge title and reach the C.I.F playoffs. Now, that would make the Tussle huge and the whole town would be in a frenzzy! I got good feeling the Dogs are about to turn the tide this year! Adena high hey! We know! We know! Adena high hey! We know! We know!
Go Dogs!!!!!!

That is great history. Thank you for sharing. I love hearing about SGV football history. Does Keppel have a rival now? They should really be realligned with SoPas, San Marino, Hoover and Glendale.

goldenarm said:

probably forgotten by most, the Mark Keppel-Alhambra Moor rivalry was fierce in the 70's. A week before and a week after game time was most intense, but the discust for one another was year round. It was usually safer on the 5 yard line then the parking lot, even with the blind sides and after whistle shots. Not a game to forget your cup either. As with the best rivalries, the result was often great football for the players and fans alike.

I posted early what about the ROSEMEAD vs ARROYO rivalry for what I feel is one of the best rivalries since these two teams always seem to battle it out for league titles.

Personaly I or my family have been involved in that rivalry since the 80's.

Other than league title rights.Does anyone ever recall of these two teams playing for some sort of ceremonial trophy such as a victory bell, brown jug, or shalalie stick?

I think it would be pretty sweet if they did. Only intensifing the rivalry even further.

hey dawg. show some respect. i'm not saying i support la salle. from what i saw and heard (and i do remember saying i spent a great deal of time around TEMPLE CITY, not la salle), players wanted to beat monrovia for the usual reasons...league champs, division rankings, the usual. but the desire to beat la salle seemed to be more personal. obviously the game had no importance in regard to cif or playoffs. talk on the sidelines seemed to be directed not so much to beat la salle, but to beat certain players on the la salle team.

i've been a ram since i was born and plan to keep it that way.

and i love that you quoted justin timberlake on this sports blog...way to represent.

stepping away from basketball talk, it seems that a lot of rio hondo league teams seem to have some hard feelings towards la salle. yes, yes, i know...teams that play each other are supposed to have some competitive drive. however, seeing as how many la salle students live in the san marino/temple city/monrovia school districts, athletes are playing against their neighbors, former ayso teammates, former schoolmates, friends, etc. i spent a good amount of time around temple city and monrovia athletics this past year. from what i heard, it seems like the tension towards la salle is just that they had such a surprise season. yes, this has been discussed, but an 0-5 team defeating the #1 ranked team in the divisioin?? doesn't seem likely. and monrovia still seems angry that they let a school like la salle get passed them, especially in the playoffs. it will be interesting to see how these teams react to each other this coming season

SBSGV said:

80's and 90's TC-Arcadia was a great rivarly. The game in '89 was an absolute classic. Many of these kids grew up playing youth sports together and the week three showdown was always the highlight of both team's preseason schedule.

Speaking of TC, I also really like the TC-Arroyo rivalry. They always play the first week of the year, both are perennial valley powers, and have always been well-coached.

As for league rivalries, Arroyo-Rosemead has to be in the top two or three.

DAWG said:

I remember back in high school (1985) Muir beat PHS at the Tussle and faced each other again 3 weeks later in the play-offs... Muir won again and the rivalry was not so much for the play-off advancement, is was more for the pride of the game and the WIN.

New York said:

Long-standing rivalries are great, but I would like a system that would allow the top teams (by season) to consistently play each other.

For instance, what if all the local top teams threw their names in a hat to play each other during weeks 4 and 5, right before the bi-week. We could see match-ups of whomever is: #1vs2, 3vs4, 5vs6, etc. The teams would not really know who they would play until the week of, similar to opening round of the playoffs. That would create a lot of local excitement and take a step closer to establishing what school has the top local team each year.

Of course there would be plenty of room for controversy with ranking and selection, but that's true with any ranking system.

Being from Pasadena, I have to say PHS-Muir is the biggest rivalry, but I would also like to add La Canada vs. La Cresenta. The schools are not in the same league, but the players really don't like each other. They also have to see eachother frequenty at the various restaurants, the local gym, and on foothill blvd which both teams share. CVHS won for I think 10 years straight before LCHS beat them 57-10 in 2005 while setting a few school records. The rivalry between the falcons and spartans surely deserves to be mentioned.

On October 18, 2007 at Friedman Field, the Golden Knights of St. Francis will take on the Cubs of Loyola renewing a rivalry that stems many decades into the past. This is the first football game played between the two schools ever since Loyola joined the Serra League. This will be a game to remembered and will never be forgotten in the minds of the faithful alumni.

How did Maranatha basketball get into this thread? Wait for basketball season!

MHS Basketball said:

No longer want to respond to trash talk from MHS:

I know for a fact that La Salle, "dropped the ball on the scheduling of Maranatha for basketball."

It doesnt appear that you know much about either basketball program. If you would have seen MHS or La Salle play this summer, you would have seen two teams going in completely different diirections.

No longer want to respond to trash talk from MHS said:

MHS Basketball:

1/3/07
La Salle 58
Maranatha 45

Also, summer league is practice - it is like saying that when an NFL teams beats another team in the pre-season, it will win in the regular season.

I do feel that Maranatha/La Salle has the potential to be a great rivalry. Non-league teams get dropped for various reasons and committments - how are you sure it was La Salle that dropped Maranatha from their schedule, and not vice versa?

To respond th another post, when I was in high school there was a great 4 way rivalry - Rosemead, Arroyo, El Monte, and Mountain View. Those were the schools (at that time) in the El Monte Union High School District, and beating the other three gave bragging rights for a year. When I was at Arroyo, we could have a down year, but if we beat Rosemead, El Monte, and Mountain View we still felt like champs.

JJimenez said:

what about ROSEMEAD vs ARROYO

MHS Basketball said:

La Salle did drop Maranatha from their basketball schedule for the first time in 3 years. Awfully disappointing. That game is always fun to watch with great fan support. Over that three year span they split 2-2. But maybe La Salle does know something. Maranatha beat them by 20 or more points twice this summer. So in response to- I dont like talking trash- maybe it is best to side step MHS for at least the next three years in hoops, because the beating they would take would not "improve their program".

I don't like talking trash said:

MHS Supporter -

Don't start a thread with a un-intelligent comment. I agree that La Salle/Maranatha would be a good rivalry, once Maranatha stops playing its usual weak teams, steps the competition up a notch or two, and finds a way to beat RHP in football. Your post could have been a good start to an intelligent discussion thread, but you appealed to the lowest common denominator ("La Salle doesn't have the guts to put MHS on their schedule.") I know this statement is not indicative of the majority of supporters of a fine Christian school like MHS.

La Salle probably does know something - playing Maranatha will not improve their program, but playing competitive teams like Monrovia, TC, Eagle Rock (football) and Bishop Amat (baseball)will. La Salle defeated Maranatha in basketball, softball (twice), and track this last year. They do know something.

MHS Supporter said:

I think that Maranatha and La Salle could be a very good rivalry if La Salle ever has the guts to put MHS on their Schedule. I think that the two schools should play eachother in every sport. LHS already took MHS off of their Baseball and Basketball Schedules. Hmm...maybe they know something.

Back in the 70's (76 or 77) Channel 4 would have a high school football game of the week on Saturday afternoon at 12pm. South Pasadena at San Marino was one of those games because of the rivalry.
Just thought I'd pass along that bit of trivia for you all.
Even as a former Titan, I'd still have to give the nod to the Turkey Tussle. Even our Burroughs vs Burbank game doesn't really compare to the Muir/PHS showdown.

Since the early 70's... people from Pasadena, LA county and other bay area schools had said, that the Turkey Tussle has been known to be a southern Cal game to watch. Ok, maybe PHS has not won the Tussle since 1996, but is still a great game to see at the Rosebowl. Can anyone name any two schools that face each other at the Rosebowl????

NOT!

In addition, I had the honor to coach on the West Hall of Fame game this summer and a couple of the Muir players and Beasley from PHS were going head to head during the practices. I can honestly say that Beasley put a couple of white helmet sticker markers on ths Stang golden/yellow helmets, and not to mentioned the hit on Lavelle up on a dive play, which Peterson fumbled the ball. It was probably one of the best HITS during the 2 1/2 weeks of practice that I witnessed.

Great job Beasley and it was an honor to coach the mighty stangs as well.

I agree that SP - San Marino is one of the best rivalries today. Bayou Vol put it perfectly. The teams aren't necessarily the best but their rivalry is. Being the same school at one point just increases the hatred between the two schools. Seasons can be called a success or failure just because they won/ lost this game. The players hate each other and the celebration with the plaque that the winning team keeps is amazing. The hype and excitement and the game in general is enough to be called one of the great rivalries in the SGV.

New York said:

In New Jersey, the playoffs are interupted for the annual Thanksgiving Day game when archrivals square off.

The second round of the playoffs are actually postponed a week for the Thanksgiving games, and the games are on Turkey Day. Now that's tradition.

BigMLover said:

A brief history:
Monrovia-Arcadia-Duarte all shared the same school from 1928 to the mid-50s, when Arcadia broke away. Duarte left at the end of the 50s, leaving Monrovia in the original, bell tower-featured building. Since then, the annual Monrovia-Duarte game has pitted brother against brother in what amounts to an intra-city grudge match. Families have routinely had graduates , students, and players at both schools.

Monrovia-Duarte is the BEST rivalry. It is competitive, spirited, and showcases, every year, the largest grouping of D1 prospects in the WSGV.

Bayou Vol said:

I am biased, but for the SGV, nothing beats San Marino-South Pasadena. They may not be perrenial title contenders these days, but they have a great history. Their games are always competitive and generally decide whether the season was a success or a failure for the respective team. The series itself was tied overall until a few years ago when South Pas went ahead. The schools hate each other, notwithstanding they were one and the same to begin with. The games are intense, the pregame antics are priceless Americana, and there is nothing better for a Friday night in October than blue and white v. orange and black.

Stang Fan said:

Sadly, the Tussle is no longer a rivalry on the field anymore. Don't get me wrong, the schools still despise each other and the community is split down the middle, but the game rivalry is non-existent. If one of the schools wins just once in 23 years that last thing you can call it is a rivalry.

With that said, the clip on FSN is still going to be pretty damn cool.
