Knights upend Los Altos
St. Francis leads early, cruises to 35-21 win

By Scott Galetti Staff Writer

LA CAÑADA — Los Altos High School's football team didn't know what hit it in the early going against St. Francis.
The Golden Knights put up 21 points in quick and impressive fashion to put the Conquerors into an early hole they were never able to crawl out of in a 35-21 victory Friday night at Friedman Field.
Sophomore Dietrich Riley rushed for 161 yards and a touchdown for St. Francis (3-1), and quarterback Austin Heyworth threw for 163 yards and two TDs.
"It was a great opportunity," Riley said. "My line executed well and we came out and played four quarters."
Heyworth was the story in the first half, completing six of his first seven passes for 139 yards and two scores. He finished 7-of-15 for 163 yards with an interception.
St. Francis wideout Kevin Garcia hauled in four passes for 112 yards and two TDs.
"Offensively, we just came out and executed," Garcia said.
Bryce Mahmud McBride was the workhorse and single-handedly kept Los Altos (3-1) in the game, rushing for 156 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries.
The Golden Knights took the opening kickoff 80 yards in five plays, capped by a 31-yard touchdown pass from Heyworth to Garcia.
Mahmud-McBride fumbled to give the Golden Knights the ball at the Conquerors 32-yard line, which led to a 1-yard touchdown run by Evan King, who had two TDs on the night.
Heyworth hit Garcia on a 43-yard scoring pass to give the Golden Knights a 21-0 lead with 1:45 to play in the opening quarter.
"We've been hearing all the hype about how they were going to devour us and run over us with their running back," Riley said. "He did well, but we just wanted to respond and show what we're capable of."
Mahmud-McBride put the Conquerors (3-1) on the board with a 95-yard kickoff return to cut St. Francis' lead to 21-7 at the half.
Riley broke off a 33-yard touchdown run to put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter.
"It was a sweep and my fullback, Evan King, put a great block on the corner and I just cut right up the sideline where there was daylight," Riley said.
Added Garcia: "He's just a pure talent and you can put him anywhere on the field — receiver, running back. He's just flat-out talented."

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that this had been brought up to your higher-ups that many times before. I also didn't know that Duarte was strictly a Trib city, it seems somewhat odd that it is.

I get the whole Montview thing, but then again we also have our local private schools who play in other leagues, albeit schools way outside of the entire SGV. I will tell you this though, folks west of Duarte most definitely pickup the paper on Saturday morning and scroll down the boxscores looking for the Duarte game.

BTW, the Crutch situation is absolutely HORRIBLE!!!

Stang Fan, great post, I think Duarte should be a crossover school like Rosemead, who is covered in both zones. I'll bring this up again for the upteenth time to the bosses. These boundaries were set before Scott or I arrived, but I can explain some of the reasoning. One, home delivery in Duarte is primarily the Tribune. Second, Duarte competes in the Montview League, which consists of all Tribune based teams, which is why we feel there is more interest in the Tribune side of town than Pasadena.

I don't have much to add to what you and others have said already, but this whole Duarte thing brings me to another issue that's not quite as important but nonetheless an issue that I've always had with the PSN/SGVT.

Why is Duarte a Tribune school? What exactly is the reasoning behind this?

For starters it seems as if they already have enough schools to cover over there. I'm not quite sure what the difference is but it seems like the PSN has fewer schools to cover than the SGVT.

Secondly, I'd always assumed the paper boundary to be the 605, which Duarte is obviously west of. Even when it comes to the Hall of Fame game the Falcons are always placed on the West team with all of the PSN teams.

Finally, what about the fact that the students at Duarte HS grow up with, go to school with, socialize with, and are often times family members of kids on the west side of the 605. From youth sports, to school, to family functions the kids at Duarte are linked more with the communities of the PSN schools than the Trib schools.

I think that's why we may be seeing some of these racist rants on the SGVT blog. They are just not familiar with the Duarte community at all. I've always viewed Duarte as a west side school and I truly believe that the switch should be made for DHS to join the PSN next year.

Scott G and Freddie J, I wonder if this is something you guys can discuss or maybe even post as a thread to see what others think. If there is going to be a poll on this topic, well, Duarte you guys have my vote to join us over here on the west side.

Some of you should join the fun on the Crutchfield thread on the SGV message board.

There is only so much room for details in a story. His last interception is on the video.

mom, i told you to quit posting on this blog.

you are embarrassing me!

thank you scott for adding Evan Kings TWO touchdown runs. Again good job Evan! But still no interceptions to seal the victory for Kevin Garcia included in the article??? Thats just plain wrong. Player of the Week honors should go to Kevin Garcia. Strong perfomance on offense and defense: 4 receptions for 113 yards 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions to seal the game. Way to go Kid!!!

I have been very vocal this year about how I believed SF wouldn't come out of the season with too many victories. The Los Altos game was one I truly thought they would lose. But the Knights came out and fought hard, so again I'd like to say congrats SF you guys stuck it not only to LA but everyone, especially myself, who said you guys were going to lose.

I guess St. Francis fans should be thanking me, I had no idea I helped fire them up...I read Jaime Cardenas' Times Blog this morning, and can't believe our Trib 2-minute drill was just the motivation they needed.

This is what it said on the Times blog

SFHS fan,

You may not know what makes for a great facility (parking is part of a facility), but you sure can scout talent.

You said to watch out for No. 4 and No. 21 and you where right. No. 4 Dietrich Riley had an awesome game, as I wrote about in an earlier blog, and No. 21 Kevin Garcia, a senior wide receiver/defensive back, wasn't far behind with his two TDs and two fourth-quarter-interceptions to help seal the victory.

Evan King, a junior running back/linebacker, also had a great game, scoring two TDs and getting that last block to spring Riley loose for the last touchdown.

The Golden Knights' offensive and defensive fronts also had monster games.

Perhaps one of the reasons St. Francis is celebrating and Los Altos is hurting right now is the media hype before the game.

Garcia said he listened to the SGVT's two-minute drill audio clip five times to get pumped up. St. Francis senior lineman Dan Scheper said he was amazed at the level of disrespect. Coach Jim Bonds didn't have to do much to motivate his players; the media did it all for him.

On the flipside, Los Altos apparently believed the hype and perhaps came in a little over-confident.

"I noticed during pregame, they didn't look fired up at all," Garcia said. "We came in knowing that they were going to beat us."

But the Golden Knights refused to lose.

"No, no way. Not in front of our fans and our parents. No way," Garcia said.

Added Riley: "We heard all the hype. The papers saying we couldn't beat them, that they we're going to devour us and we just wanted to respond back."

Said Scheper: "They came in expecting to whomp on us, but we had a different idea."
