Week 5 prognostication time.
It's once again time to put our heads together to decide the winners in Week 5.

Football Graphic

A mediocre week of picks for yours truly in Week 4

Saturday's Game
Marshall vs. Los Angeles Baptist at Alemany, 7 p.m. - Galetti LA Baptist; Calpreps (LA Baptist 44-6)

The Skinny
When the schedule came out, San Gabriel and San Marino was the last on my list for Game-of-the-Week honors. But here we are in Week 5 and this is a huge game. The Titans are on a roll and San Gabriel's lone loss was to athe two-time CIF-City Section Invitational Division champs. This should be an outstanding game. Pasadena and Burbank is an interesting one. The battle will answer which Bulldogs are better and more likely to have a shot at reaching the postseason. St. Francis will be heavily tested against a Saugus team that nearly upset Notre Dame. Outside of those games, don't expect too many surprises this week.

Notes: Blair vs. Golden Valley isn't going to happen, although Calpreps had Blair a favorite on Sunday. Calpreps (Blair 35-17)

Anonymous,

Black and fast? Arcadia has no passing game and Lynnwood's and Monrovia's skill players are not as good as PHS's. I can't speak for Muir, because I think they are a terrible team too and I'm basing this off of football only. The Dog's are putting up 400 yards a game and is doing it with balance. Once you stop Arcadia's running it's over!

Your choices for the game of the week and the spotlight games were absolutely correct. From a readership standpoint (ie..subscribers) and from a competition standpoint.
Maranatha and RHP are nice schools, but they need to compete against more local teams to build more of a fan base than just parents and former students. How did Maranatha benefit from their pre-season schedule?

Anonymous said:

dawg 87,

arcadia played lynwood and monrovia and beat them. Lynwood, monrovia, muir, and pasadena all have the same type of players. black and fast. what makes you think arcadia can't compete with pasadena and muir?

Go back and read my initial statement. I must have caught you at a bad moment. For you to take a stab at RHP and Maranatha was unwarranted--that's why they play at their respective levels. Sad commentary by you to need to take pokes at them being unable to compete for a half. You don't see me taking a stab at you "only" working for the Star News but you went on a bit of an attack. I wasn't even suggesting a game of the week--just coverage which I believe you addressed. My stab was at Miles no one else. I'm sure Spoon would be proud of your stance... Thanks for the update on St. Francis' following and Pasadena being in Pasadena--I've only lived here for 31 years but you're the expert.

Stang Fan,

I seen Arcadia play and outside of Kevin Walker they have nothing! If, coach Mills don’t kill the Dogs, nobody in the league can handle the offensive attack PHS possesses! Now that the running game is going it’s fairly to say, it’s impossible to stop. Only Muir has the athletes to run with the Dogs. That’s why playing that hard schedule will pay off. It will not be easy, but I think PHS will win the Pacific going 7-0!

Fair,

The reason they had different numbers is, because the originals were damaged and the new ones will not be here for another week. I love the way you want to put a damper on the win, but the fact of the matter is I don’t think Muir will beat Burbank. The reason is that Muir has no passing attack and once you stop Youngblood it’s over! That’s why Arcadia barley beat Burbank, because their (Burbank) run defense is not really that bad. I must be crazy talking any sense to you, because I can tell your not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Oh, and that same 0-5 team was 0-3 when they played Arcadia.

P, just so you know, Pasadena HS is in Pasadena. Why wouldn't we play up a game between them and a team that nearly knocked off Arcadia last week when it was the only game on Thursday?
St. Francis happens to have large following (ever been to one of their games to see the large crowds)? I get feedback from those people all the time, so I know somebody's reading over there.
It's not a slight on RHP or Maranatha. Just not the biggest game of the night. The records don't lie.

Anonymous said:

o~cat, what about the hole in monrovia? worry about your own team. Arcadia is just fine at 4-0. The biggest hole I saw this year was monrovia's defense, giving up 254 rushing yards to troy ahmaz.

There are years when Maranatha and Rio Hondo Prep might be deserving of a game of the week, but not this year. What RHP Prep and Maranatha fans don't realize is that few outside their little circle are interested in their little game. How many students at RH prep, 45. Give me a break. San Marino and San Gabriel have large student populations with huge alumni followings, especially San Marino, which is in the heart of the Star-News coverage area. We can listen to you little guys whine when you have good records and are highly ranked in your divisions, but when you're an average, run of the mill small school, who cares?

Read deeper Scott. My point was that you had two local schools playing not a dig on Pasadena or St. Francis. However neither Burbank nor Saugus fans likely subscribe to the SGVN. That was really my point. You provide the dig with a reference and poke to Stanford/Rice--so who's picking on what? So what was your point again?---oh yeah I knocked St. Francis and Pasadena....where?

ScottG said:

PFinchamp: First of all, I'm covering the San Marino/San Gabriel game, a 4-0 team vs. a 3-1 team. The paper will have a solid reporter covering the Rio Hondo Prep/Maranatha game, but it hardly ranks as the game of the week in it's current state.

Saugus, by the way, almost beat Notre Dame, one of the top teams in Division I last week and the game was won on a last-minute field goal last year. And the Saugus-St. Francis game just so happens to be one of the top games in So. Cal this week.

Pasadena was the only game on Thursday and Burbank is a team almost knocked off our area's current top team last week.

Readers will see the RHP/Maranatha game as it still is going to be one of our top games, just not in the spotlight.
There are plenty of other schools having nice seasons. We didn't preview Alhambra's game either, or Rosemead.

Would ESPN have Stanford/Rice as its game of the week?

Unfortunately, that's what this matchup became this year.

Observantcat said:

Congratulations Bulldogs.
That Burbank game did make a statement to the other teams in your league. This year has been a week to week prove it kind of season. If you play the rest of the teams like you played Burbank, Some of you Dawgs....might just have something to really gloat about. I saw a lot of holes in the Arcadia team, #1 the QB is not half as fast on his feet as was mentioned in the press he was getting in the first weeks of the season. #2 A good defensive team could really the Apaches if they were disciplined or even just more athletic. I think that the Pacific League is really up for Grabs this year and I think that the second half of the season is really the most important! That Turkey Tussle might just be what it was billed for afterall....

I think you missed the boat without having small schools Maranatha v Rio Hondo Prep as a game of the week. Yes both teams don’t have excellent records going into this year’s game but still a big match for both teams to get it going before league play starts. Maranatha has to put points on the board this year and build confidence after the disastrous injuries it’s endured so far this season. Not sure why RHP is struggling this year but they too need a good showing this week as they start league play soon.

Too bad you departed from your early season thinking that you would cover RH Prep vs. Maranatha. Granted neither team is posting big wins but neither is Pasadena. So you preferred to cover Saugus and Burbank who have little or no readership in your area? At least RHP and Maranatha are within your readership locale--too bad. Follow Mills, good choice.

A very interesting take on why football “is so bad in the SGV.” Let me see if I understand this…

Youth Football Programs
SGV-- the youth football programs get no support and those that do then fall apart due to the politics of the parents
OC and SF---I wasn’t aware that youth football programs in those areas are completely free of politics and have no issues with parental support. Wow, how do they do it?

Soccer Has Taken Over
SGV--- parents are too wimpy to let their kids play football
OC and SF---I didn’t realize parents in other areas aren’t concerned about their children getting injured if they play football. Who knew that parents in the SGV are so much softer than in the rest of So Cal?

Demographics
SGV---The demo has move to Asian, Hispanic and Armenian in the SGV

OC and SF---Another thing I didn’t know about. When did all of the Hispanics and Asians leave OC and SF???

Thanks a lot! It all makes sense now.

Anonymous said:

Going by JohnM is takes guts - go back to your Madden 08 - stay off the computer

Anonymous said:

The reason football is so bad in the SGV is because the youth football programs get no support and those that do then fall apart due to the politics of the parents and secondly soccer has taken over for football because parents are too wimpy to let their kids play football and travel baseball and basketball are year round so not as many kids come out for football. Lastly, the demo has move to Asian, Hispanic and Armenian in the SGV - not exactly groups known for football aptitude at the high school level more known for soccer skills - especially Hispanics. OC and SF Valley don't have the issues above - in fact they have more football playing kids then they can handle. That is why you see those schools are winning CIF football championships and the SGV doesn't.

This will be SF's hardest game so far. Saugus has their best team in years with solid linebackers on defense and legit speed on offense with their QB and Running back. Also working in Saugus' favor is the memory of last seasons second half meltdown and last second win by the Golden Knights. But I have a feeling Saugus will come in with big heads with the mentality that they almost beat Notre Dame and are ranked high in their division. This along with the fact that SF is playing at home, where they alway seem to pick up their game seriously only 5 loses in the last 5 years , makes me believe the Golden Knights are going to win an offensive shootout.

Another week, another round of predictions.....

Burbank over PHS (I've changed my mind on this game a few times already. I picked the dogs to beat BHS at the begining of the year, but then all of a sudden PHS struggled big time and BHS had a good game vs. Arcadia. Now BHS' qb is hurt? Well, the game starts and ends at the line and BHS has a much better line, so they will prevail)

Arcadia over Hoover (no commentary needed)

Muir over Glendale (Muir will more than likely be playing for more than a "W" this Friday....RIP Dion H.)

Alhambra over SEM( don't know much about SEM this year, but I do know that they are known to be a tough, gritty program....AHS is too strong for them in the long run though)

SP over Keppel ( no commentary is needed)

H-W over La Canada (I'm not that familiar with the happenings of the LC football program, but as an outsider looking in it appears to be an UGLY situation)

TC over La Salle (this is my upset special of the week. Who thought these programs would head into this week a combined 1-7? TC bounces back after weeks of frustration)

Saugus over SF (you'd think I'd learn my lesson after last week, but I am actually really impressed with Saugus, who I believe will come in 2nd place in their difficult league. Early in the year I predicted SF would go 3-7 or 4-6 so I've got to stick to my guns. Again.....they have the most difficult schedule in the area.........BY FAR!!! It's not even remotely close, and I respect Coach Bonds and crew for scheduling that sort of competition.....it reminds me of Muir's old schedules.)

San Gabriel over San Marino (It's the ol' ground game vs. the aerial attack....I see SG's D stepping up to stop the run this week)

Rosemead over Orange (the Mead continues their nice little run....their blowout to LA looks a little suspect now though)

RHP over Maranatha (IF Maranatha has their full roster it's a different game, obviously.....but they don't.....RHP by 10)

There are very few athletes left at Glendale and Hoover. Those who can play end up at Crescenta Valley or go to private schools.

They replaced virtually the entire coaching staff at GHS after last year's 0-10 season. They are playing better football this year but will still end up 0-10 or 1-9.

The last championship seasons for Glendale were 1990 and 1991. They were 10-0 in '90 and 9-1 in '91. Hoover's last title was in 1954. They went to the CIF championship game that year losing by a TD to Centennial.

RH Prep knows that Chadwick is the team most likely to challenge them for league championship. Chadwick plays RHP on your affectionately dubbed cow pasture the last game of the season. Flintridge does have a solid running game but their foes have been soft, sans Santa Clara.

As for the match up with Maranatha I hear the linemen are restless after a week up at science camp and feeling downright nasty. The team hasn't played since 9/21 so they are well healed and hungry. Home game is good. We both know Maranatha needs to show something in this game to believe in themselves. I think any score Maranatha puts on the board is an improvement, don't you?

I wonder why Crutch is leaving Duarte? There's probably something bigger we don't know.

I hate to see Scott G pick us this year. Would rather see you guys get the nod.
So, lets hear your prediction for this years RHP v Maranatha game. This year’s game doesn’t have the significance that it’s had the last couple of years, a 2 and 2 Maranatha v a 0 and 3 RHP team. We have our excuses, what’s going on in Kares country. How does prep league look this year? Is Chadwick the team to beat? Does, 3 and 1 Flintridge have a chance?

if they score on the 3rd team*

saying hoover will beat arcadia is like saying lindsay lohan will beat mike tyson...come on now i know they say each game each team has a 50-50 chance of winning...this is more like a 99-1 for arcadia. hoover is god awful they'll be lucky if they on the 3rd team

Breaking News: Wardell Crutchfield resigns
Duarte Head coach Wardell Crutchfield informed me minutes ago that he has informed Duarte High principal Dr. William Martinez that he has resigned. We will have more in tomorrow's newspaper.

RAMFAN said:

Hey tiger fan i never said he was coaching the San gabriel game. Read it over next time. Nor did I slander any coaches. The fill in is Van De Veere, I think our best bet is having a monkey run the show than him.

Mark said:

I agree with Ramfan, Van De veere would not be my first choice of a head coach fill in for TC. But I guess some love his no effort coaching. Hey how about another shot of vodka to make it through your day LOL

TigerFan said:

San Marino Blowout: i appreciate the kind comments of the Keppel coach to the San Marino team that destroyed his squad 75-0 last weekend. I was not at the game, but one could only hope that the SM coach pulled his first string at the start of the 3rd quarter when the score was 42-0 and the game outcome was clearly decided.

Low budget comment about the interim TC coach. Especially since HE WAS NOT COACHING the San Gabriel game. Factless, meaningless commentary - benefiting whom? This site has become slander central -attacking all and anyone on the TC coaching staff. It is a nauseating statement on what some feel represents an intelligent discussion.

Thank goodness for the bye week.

we shoulda kept will in last year. we put him in he scores a td, then we put in padilla he fumbles 6 times.

I cant Believe Temple City lost to San gabriel. With a drunk like John Van De Veere stepping in as head coach.......God help us all!!

Viking fan said:

Blair doesn't play this week. There was some kind of scheduling issue (not on our end). Our next game is next week.

Anonymous said:

pop off, MANY lancers claimed that dwight did play. however, many MORE know that he did not play in the game last year.

P: Didn't you ride me the same way with my pick a couple of weeks ago? I hadn't seen that team either.

Pasadena over Burbank
Even with bad coaching the kids will win this one.

Arcadia over Hoover
Hoover should close down

Muir over Glendale
Glendale needs to higher role models as coaches.

Alhambra over El Monte
Alhambra is to mean.

Blair over Golden Valley
Two words - Scat backs

Bosco Tech over Cantwell
Who cares, really?

South Pasadena over Keppel
SP played a tough first half against Alhambra

Harvard over La Canada
No Heroes means many loses in football.

Temple City over La Salle
TC wins one for their coach

Maranatha over Rio Hondo
Maranatha just cause

Rosemead over Orange
Orange? Enough said.

San Gabriel over San Marino
Karma (75-0)

Saugus over St. Francis
The time of year Jim Bonds teams fold like a bad poker hand

Los Angeles Baptist over Marshall
Marshall played a intre squad game and both teams lost

Don't expect too many surprises?.....I think the whole start to the season is one big surprise. No one but no one thought San Marino or Blair would come out looking good or even undefeated and possibly the same could be said for Alhambra and Rosemead. I think the whole start is a surprise regardless of the strength of schedule issue. No one ever expects, TC, Monrovia and RHP to go into leagues with losing records!

Wasn't it all the La Salle honks who claimed wrongly that "Dwight played..."

Anonymous said:

wasn't tc supposed to beat ls without dwight?

F-ball Einstein said:

Temple City's toughest game was Alhambra.

TC will beat La Salle w/o DO!

smtforme said:

la salle struggled last year in the beginning of the season.

in 2005 they started league games with only 2 losses, eagle rock and temple city

in 2004 they started league games with the one loss to eagle rock

Da Truf said:

La Salle is one of the elite teams in the area. They have a history of struggling in the first part of each season. It could be possible that by week 6 La Salle will even be able to challenge such teams as Alhambra or even Arcadia.

Saw your pick this week. Fred did the same thing a couple of years back when RHP won 50-0. Have you seen either team play this year?

Viking Student said:

From what I know (Im a Blair Student, and they dont tell us anything anymore, so I cant confirm) the person in charge of Schedualing at Golden Valley messed up, they had 2 games planned for the same day. We got the call a few weeks ago, and basically, they arent playing us. I cant say this is exactly 100% true, and as far the the football team thinks, we dont have game this week.

CuriousGeorge;

Calpreps.com has Blair playing Golden Valley this Friday @ 7:00 pm at Canyon (Canyon County) high.

Also, this is the website I found for Golden Valley...http://goldenvalleygrizzlies.ca.usfootballnet.com/schedules/

San Marino vs. San Gabriel will be a good game and will all depend who wants it more. San Gabriel is a good team but I think San Marino has my vote for friday night.

Curious George said:

Can anyone confirm that blair is playing golden valley? In a earlier topic some blair fan stated they were looking forward to their bye week, also when you go to golden valley high school's website its athletic schedule takes you to highschoolsports.net and says that golden valley is playing beverly hills and not blair. Anyone have any info?

Birdman Jr. said:

SG vs SM.. should be a very interesting game. But i think SG's offense will be too much for sm. Common SM scored 75 on keppel..and they played gaybrielino.. SG has the best offensive mind in the area. in Jude Oliva.the question is if sg's D plays to their potential. If so it'll be a long night for the titans.

Congrats to Arcadia moving up to 4th in the Central.
Wow-San Marino 6th and Blair 7th in the mid valley.
