Did anyone see the la salle vs. mayfield game this tuesday? la salle girls took it to 5 games, and were in the lead most of the time. they were expected to lose in 3 games, but they really showed they could play.

and put Burroughs as #6

Gabrielino is overrated...San Marino beat them in 5 last week...i say move san gabriel up to #9...and put Alveno in the #10 spot

1. Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy - untouchable at the moment. The upperclassmen balance the Varsity inexperience of the newbies. Might be an issue later but I doubt it. They play a strong pre-season. That has a way of maturing players fast.

2. La Canada - Tall, scrappy, team of fighters. Sometimes that's enough.

3. Mayfield - Well rounded team with a strong offense. If they continue to play team ball they'll go far. Hard serving team. This team has very few weaknesses.

4. Maranatha - Tall and scrappy with power even though it's not utilized well. Need better setting decisions and a better block. Really good team, but they won't go deep without some changes.

5. Westridge - Talent, experience, coaching. They have it all. Team chemistry might be the unmaking of a champion. Time will tell. Lots of great kids individually. If they can focus on the goal, look for another run.

6. Arcadia - It's amazing what a little hunger can do. This team has a title to recover. They aren't as talented as past teams but they seem to want "it" bad enough to succeed.

7. La Salle - Building momentum. No big names, but sometimes that's better. Definitely a team that is being underrated. On any given day they could be higher on this list.

8. Pasadena - Slow start. Learning how to play without a powerhouse. Coming along as they learn to divide the duties among the team. Strong setting and power on the outside. If this team can stay healthy look for a lot more wins.

9. Gabrielino - A good block attack can shut this team down. They are defensive, but on offense they are kind of one dimensional. Not quite the Gabrielino of old.

10. San Gabriel - This team is able play defense with the best of them. That's good enough for the preseason when big hitters aren't used to being "dug", but deeper into season the need for a tough offensive game will hold them back.

Yes unranked Poly did beat Alerno the 6th ranked team above 3 -0. I don't know what the scores of the games were. I don't know if Poly is better than people think or Alverno is worse than people think.

two best team by far Mayfield and FSHA - no one else is close.

Mayfield is a good team this year. Finally Rachel and Susan seem to have found their rhythm and add Madisyn to the mix and it makes for a pretty powerful front line; The rest of the team is solid and defensively keep them in the game.

That being said, there is no way that the Cubs could beat FSHA though. The experience that Orlindini's team has makes all of the difference. Put Condin up against Carlson and it's no contest. Rachel and Susan have had success as high as the age 16 level of club volleyball...FSHA has players with 18 and under success. It's a faster, smarter game at that level. Head to head FSHA would neutralize the Cubs.

Mr. Gibson, well noted on the fact that fsha is in a different division, it doesnt matter because your talking about the horses on the team and trust when i say that if Mayfield was in any other division they would be just as good as they are now. Im not saying they would win there division but they would certainly rank higher then the teams you mentioned. thanks

Mayfield could beat anyone in the SGV this year.

Did Alverno lose to Poly?
Anyone know the score - was it a close match?

Who ranked these teams? What happened to Campa's rankings? He seemed to know what he's talking about. I like Mayfield too, but they would get smoked by FHSA?

anonymous said:

FSHA is the definite number 1. Though Mayfield is strong this year, there is no denying that in a match up, FSHA would be the winner. Also, FSHA is in division 1A while mayfield is in division IV-AA.

san marino beat gabrielino ....where is the gabrielino hype at?

John Gibson said:

This list of "CIF Rankings" is completely misleading. ( disclosure: My daughter is on the Mayfield volleyball team)

The teams are ranked *within* the CIF divisions and are no indication as to how they might do in competition with a team from another division. Mayfield is a IV-AA school while FSHA is in division I-A.

Flintridge Sacred Heart is a very, very good team and in a much stronger CIF division than is Mayfield. While I think Mayfield would give FSHA a good match, it would seem reasonable at this point to rank FSH above Mayfield in any poll for our area.

Additionally, La Canada, Arcadia, Pasadena, and Maranatha are all in higher CIF divisions as well.

Best wishes,

John
