FOOTBALL: Apaches outlast Bulldogs

Troy Amhaz rushes for 235 yards and five touchdowns on 40 carries to lead Arcadia to 43-29 win over Pasadena.
This game indeed lived up to its billing, and then some.

ARCADIA - Arcadia High School's football team has a slogan it shouts out before taking the field: "No Apache Down."
Apaches running back Troy Amhaz took it to heart.
Carry after carry, Amhaz refused to go down Friday night against visiting Pasadena.
The hard-nosed senior running back seemed more like a bulldozer to the Bulldogs defense as he carried the ball 40 times for 235 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Apaches to a come-from-behind, 43-29 Pacific League victory on homecoming night at Arcadia's Salter Stadium.
"I have to give the credit to our entire offensive line," Amhaz said. "Our team worked as a fist and we came back as a team."
Arcadia (7-0, 4-0) trailed 21-14 at the half, but came out firing on all cylinders in the second half.
The Apaches stayed with their theme they established in the first half and repeatedly attacked Pasadena's run defense with a steady diet of Ammaz, who churned out 164 yards and four of his TDs in the second half.
"They're a really good team, but we wanted it more so we took it." Amhaz said.
Pasadena (4-3, 3-1) outgained Arcadia in total offense, 442-320, but Arcadia kept the clock moving by using Amhaz as a steady weapon to control the second half.
"We got down to old school in the second half," Arcadia coach Jon Dimalante said. "I told the players at halftime that we have to earn the league championship. Nobody's going to give us anything."
In some ways, Pasadena gave the Apaches plenty.
The Bulldogs were flagged for 13 penalties for 97 yards, while Arcadia was flagged just six times for 44 yards.
"I don't have any words for this travesty," Pasadena coach Kevin Mills said. "Every time we come to Arcadia something like this happens.
"Between our defense and the refs, there was no way we were going to win the game. I feel like I got held up and robbed tonight."
Most of the Bulldogs' yards came through the air from the arm of senior quarterback Tyron Crockom.
Crockom dazzled Arcadia's defense by completing 20 of his 29 passes for 412 yards and four touchdowns.
Michael Harrison hauled in six passes for 177 yards and an 86-yard touchdown, while Arness Ikner had six catches for 112 yards and a pair of TDs, including a 68-yard dart from Crockom.
With his team down a touchdown, Amhaz scored on a five-yard run early in the third quarter to tie the game at 21.
He scored on a 22-yard TD run just less than three minutes later to give Arcadia the lead.
Pasadena came right back on a 68-yard TD strike from Crockom to Ikner. The pair hooked up for the two-point conversion, and Pasadena led, 29-28, midway through the third quarter.
Amhaz gave the Apaches the lead back for good with his two-yard romp late in the third, and put an exclamation point on the win with a 7-yard TD run with 1:30 left in the contest.
Arcadia quarterback Kevan Walker was 9-of-12 passing for 92 yards.

I believe it was 5 td's.

For the PHS, it wasn't the refs, it's called weight room, try getting into one.

No one is ROBBED from a game when their RB runs for 164 total yards in the second half. Troy Ahmaz earned the yards and the 4 TD's against HS. If the need to blame the refs, and/or the venue of the game, blame the holes from the O-LINEMEN of Arcadia.

Stang Fan,

Arcadia and Muir game will be a classic. In a earlier blog, I posted a final score and now I believe I shouldn't have done that. Arcadia by now means can under estimate Muir. They have a better overall offense that PHS, ground and passing game. So, I might be counting my chickens before that hatch. I have much respect for the stangs.

Win or lose, I'll be a Stang for day at the rose bowl. I'll be pulling for you all against PHS. I can tell you now, PHS will probably rack up 100 yards in personal fouls cause those kids run their foul mouths to the refs and cheap shots after the whitsle.

Miketev,

You are a former player? You seem to know a whole lot about arcadia football and the game. Good to see that.

Whatever happened to Frank P?

Thanks once again. Observer's facts are quite intriguing. I never would have though a school district would hire that sort of person but obviously I thought wrong.

For a mere $5.00 you can purchase a TC program. Flip to the page listing RHL titles...there you will realize you are truly lacking anything factual in your commentary.

"History" extends backward farther than 1 season, and a good program extends much longer than the tenure of 1 or 2 coaches. Whether there are coaching transitions or hiccups in the talent pool - the Temple City program will likely remain successful in grooming talented student-athletes long after you or I have moved on.

Thanks BIG,
I know that some of the post blogs regarding the AHS vs PHS game must be from students/players...Im not too familiar on the negative issues between the PHS parents, players, coaching staff, therefore I dont discuss anything on the blog. I have not resided in Pasadena since 1992. But, I know that by reading some of the posts regarding the events from last year's Tussle, a parent fighting with a player, two students fighting each other at a gym, and now the parent going into the AHS locker is all I need to read. I will stay off those susbjects. No need to stir the pot. I just hope that the school district and CIF open their eyes and maybe have a solution to all of the bad press coming out of PHS.

We must remember that life is not about winning a game on Friday night, is how we as coaches make a positive impact on the players from Spring training until the final snap. Having FUN is the key element to success in life.

The wins will come to those who have the proper game plan from the proper staff, the proper support from the parents and school, and the simply coaching 14-18 year olds, not NFL players and/or Pop Warner Sunday warriors like in some high schools within the SGV. A Different approach must be examined with each individual player/student in order to have a successful TEAM who can play TOGETHER.

The ART of the Game is not the same as the ART of coaching the game and coaching for future life's challenges after high school.

miketv,
job well done on describing the inner workings of the line, and how others around the "big dog" - feed and prosper from the presence of a single, near unstoppable dude in the middle. It always go back to fundamentals in good football - and the bottom line is you can't double team everybody. Those left free - the unattended or barely attended - need to realize they have been PURPOSEFULLY left alone and make an impact! The stat sheet never smiles upon the guy absorbing the double team all night-but if the surrounding players bring all they got - everybody looks good.
From your comments it appears a bad deal for kids locked into that program - hopefully somebody has the big picture view and large enough stones to decide a different direction might be warranted. Well written and unbiased commentary - pretty rare nowadays.

Excellent analysis by miketev. The Pasadena receivers are remarkable and the QB did a great job getting the ball to them. Incredible vertical game.UCLA should take note. The comments on the Arcadia players were right on. I suspect that Walker has been nursing his groin and as it heals, which it looks like it has, will run when needed as he did in their first game against St Francis.

Refreshingly well-written post. That's class!

Observer said:

The Pasadena people who have been writing to talk about their embarrassment at the Coach's post-game interview rant and the behavior of the parent (who some have called "Huck") are to be commended. It is too bad the PUSD Administrators don't take action. Running a google search on the Coach, I ran across this blurb on him from the Pasadena Weekly...

"Pasadena High School Football Coach Kevin Mills pleaded no contest Monday to a misdemeanor charge of disturbing the peace for allowing a fight to occur between students.

Mills, who faces up to one year on probation when he returns to a Pasadena courtroom on Aug. 22, was originally charged with one misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor after allegedly allowing his 16-year-old nephew and another boy to fight in the gym at John Muir High School.

Mills is currently working for the district at an off-campus sight. "

This is shameful. What kind of role-models do you have at that school: the apparent father of a top player acting like a total thug and a coach who it sounds like has no sense of right or wrong. I hope the nephew referred to in the article is not the son of Huck.

No wonder there are people writing on the blog about taking their kids out of PHS.

miketev said:

First of all, I have to say that every single player that stepped foot on that field should be very proud of themselves. That was an extremely entertaining game to watch.

Both offense’s exposed the weaknesses of the defenses. Pasadena’s speed at the wide-out position was far too much for the Apaches to handle. Ikner and Harrison are amazing talents. Elusive, tough to bring down, and both with great hands. You have to really give it up for Crockom at QB. He was amazing. The Arcadia defense kept bringing the pressure and with his speed, he was able to get outside of the pocket while continuing to look downfield and make some incredible plays. 400+ yards passing against a typically solid defensive squad? Amazing. I’m not sure if Arcadia will be able to correct their secondary problems – primarily because of the fact that you can’t teach speed this late in the season. Luckily, I truly doubt that Arcadia will encounter much of that same speed again – even in the playoffs – that’s how fast these Pasadena receivers appeared to me. I thought Morris really stood out on Defense for the Bulldogs. He was everywhere – taking on the Apaches’ Golper and Picard (the apaches 220lb+ tight end and fullback combo) with reckless but impressive abandon and making quite a few tackles from his safety spot. Benson played well too. If Pasadena can take care of things better defensively this team has a real threat of going far into the playoffs. Their offense is that good.

You have to really give it up for Troy Ahmaz and the Arcadia Apaches line. Pasadena simply could not stop him and that was the story of the game. This Arcadia line combined with the bruising running style of Ahmaz just wears teams out. Walker played very well – connecting with Willm and Golper consistently when Pasadena stacked 9 on the line. I’ve wondered in the couple Arcadia games I’ve watched this year – why don’t the Apaches use Walker more as a runner? Is his groin still acting up? He sure looked fast when he ran that naked boot into the endzone for two points. Defensively, I thought the Arcadia defensive line played very, very well. Picard just doesn’t stop. I was very impressed by #78 Fields as well. The program guide listed him as 6’2” 280. This kid gets off the ball really well for someone his size and he really clogged up the middle of that line paving the way for Arcadia’s linebackers to make plays. Any Arcadia parents – is Fields getting any looks from colleges? Klein is so much fun to watch. Hes got heart the size of the empire state building. Golper was all over the place at LB – as expected. I’m a huge fan of this kid. He really put the pressure on Crockrom when blitzing – I counted 2.5 sacks – hes got some serious speed for a big kid – or really any kid - which he really displayed in sucking up Crockrom from behind a few times. One more thing –Dillon Short, the sophomore kicker is amazing. Hes got a future.

Wish I could address more of the players on both teams – you all played your tails off and should be proud of yourselves. I was very, very entertained!

I contemplated not addressing this but I think I should - I just watched the video and I have to say that I am absolutely appalled by Coach Mills’ interview after the game. I’m sorry Coach Mills – your team was not robbed. You on the other hand have robbed your kids from understanding that there is still something to be gained in defeat. Instead of all these fans on the blog who attended the game speaking about all the talent on this Pasadena team they are only speaking about your horrendous and embarrassing behavior. The kids on both sides put on a fantastic show, put everything they had into that game, and should be very proud of themselves.

Muir v. Arcadia this week. I’m going to try and make it out – think the wife might hold me back, however. It should be a good one.

Your a bad representation of our community and I think it's sick how you even get the kids involved with the horrible things you do. I've never seen a grown man act like that. Alhambra-Bell Gardens is a good one, as is St. Francis-Alemany and Temple City-San Marino.
Saturday's Flintridge Prep-Chadwick game could be interesting if the Rebels can slow down Chadwick's offense. And Maranatha's game against Calvary Chapel in Long Beach could be an entertaining game as well.
There plenty of good games this week.

That's the thing Big A and Dawwg the PHS days of old are gone. This new PHS is what it is--a bunch of crybaby--whiny--complaining--losing--fake-thug--sorry bunch of a-holes in charge of our young men. These idiots in charge of this football program are a disgrace to the school and the city of Pasadena. Mills' post-game speech on the video should be enough for our spineless administration to get rid of him, but of course they won't. "I give no congratulations to no one." Really? "I feel like I was held up and robbed." What? "Between our defense and the refs there was no way we were going win." Huh? "I don't have any words for this tragedy, every time we come to Arcadia somthing like this happens." Is that right? Real men stand up. Real men take blame. Real men set examples. Real men don't blame kids ("Between our defense and the refs we were not going to win). Real men aren't in this for themselves ("I was held up...") Real men show good sportsmanship ("I give no congratulations to no one.") Real men don't lie ("Everytime we come to Arcadia something like this happens," even though he's been there a total of two times.) I'm tired of this and others are tired of this to. That's why many of the families of the juniors and sophomores are talking about leaving soon. I'm so tired of Huck's bullcrap. I'm so tired of these fake men. I can't wait for my nephew to leave next semester. The only travesty Mills is you and your program. Administration, bring back Tip, please!

And what did coach Mills have to do with this he was working, if that is the case Arcadia’s coach should be held accountable for his trainer cussing at a child too. Just a thought you never know who is watching who.

It was clearly a great game between both teams.

I will be glad when this blog can talk about football again.

"PHS does have speed on it's side, but in the end Arcadia's strength and ability to pound the ball will be too much for the dogs, especially in the second half. BUT, it will be close.)"

Stangfan what a great pre-game analysis, as our big bruiser 'Des-Troy' Ahmaz pounded those pups in the second half 165 yards. Friday can not come soon enough and you are write it will be a great atmosphere. It is true that a PHS parent came into our lockerrom at halftime, those guys over there should be ashamed. Apaches 10-0!

stang,
sad but true #4 dad entered arcadia's locker room during half time. he yelled cuse words at a arcadia volunteer trainer and went face to face with an arcadia player. I heard racial remarks come out too. funny thing is arcadia is asian. too many liitle kids saw this happen. shame on mills and parents. what a sad day. but it fired up arcadia to the point of no return. thanks to that parent it give a sluggish arcadia purpose.

I understand that this is blog so therefore any and all comments are deemed accetable, but could everyone please stick to the games. There is really no reason to accuse teachers and staff of any school of lying, cheating or stealing. After all, you never know who is reading these posts. Let's all just show a little decency please!!

As always, the Pacific will come down to the Muir/Arcadia game. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

A poster noted earlier in the year that when it comes to the top three teams the only three teams that matter are Arcadia, Muir, and SF. Now, I won't neccesarily agree that that is always true, but it couldn't be any truer this year.

Next week is HUGE!!! I'm sure all of the Apache faithful will fill up the north bleachers and it should be a great high school football game.

BTW, someone please tell me it isn't true that a Pasadena fan entered the Apache locker room at haftime to talk mess?

Hey MUIR, at least we have a school to go to at PHS... unlike your school, we don't get state monitored and we don't need a new principle every year

SPvTC:
A 7-0 (TC) game till late in the 4th. SP scored but missed the extra point with three minutes or so to go. SP gave up a kick return TD off of a weird (seemed like play was dead) onside kick.

SP went on an 80-yd drive with less than two minutes, scored on a 30-yd TD and went ahead on a two-point conversion, 14-13. TC ran the kickoff back with 30sec to go.

SP had almost no rushing but maybe close to 300yds in the air. Another SP TD pass was called back for holding. TC had a lot of penalties through the mid part of the game and the TC offense was on the field a lot more than SP.

Some of us poor slimes had to work Fri night.

wow... people are still talking trash about the TC football coaching staff?? If you watched the game last night, you would have noticed that the D-line did a great job... South Pas. had no running room at all... Im sure if you ask coach Uhl if he liked the change this year he would say no because he never has coached or played D-line, but he is doing an ok job... to say he is cancer is pretty over the top...

I had to see pasadena play. I came from around the staples center area to see my hood play. Holy cow, did anyone witness that little person play for PHS? He was good. That's nice to represent a small minority and the likes of emmanuel lewis and gary coleman. I am sure they are proud as can be. if I am mistaken by any means, sorry....and the only thing I can suggest is that cigarettes are bad for your health.

mills, keep the crying and excuses cause the stangs are coming to tap that too. yeah, blame the refs for amhaz's 235 yards. by the way, what are u dressing up in this year for the tussle?

That even makes it more incredulous that they get one right and one wrong, and you are right Scott does a great job and I said nothing to the contrary, and apologize to him if he made a typo, but until you have walked in this paranoid guys shoes sweep your on porch.

moorsfan said:

anonalso,

Grow up. You sound a little insecure. Mistakes happen, and the article on the inside clearly stated the Titans got the win in dramatic fashion. S.M. has been involved in a game of the week, had a feature on John Trawick and received plenty of ink. Hardly a lack of respect. Friday night has to be insane trying to compile all the game stats, much of it from volunteer correspondents, and get it all printed so it can be dissected by you, me and everyone else who is sure they could do a better job.
I think Scott and the rest of the crew do a great job in spite of typos or misprints. This years area coverage is better than anything they have ever provided.

Mills' comments are the same as Mike Holmgrem's after losing to the Steelers in the Superbowl. It happens. At least he did not put it on his kids.

My 5 year old daughter has more class and shows more sportsmanship than Coach Mills! His post-game rant was a disgrace!!!

Scott,
I know we have pop warner highschool teams around here, it looks like we also have grade school editors, on the sports page of the star news, it says Blair def. San Marino. Tell them thanks for helping in our belief that the star news can't stand San Marino. No way was that a typo. Done with the star news.

Vinny51 said:

Pasadena thought they could win? In case they did not know we are arcadia and they are pasadena the game ended right thier!!!

Hal Lamaster said:

I just read the quotes from the PHS coach after the Arcadia loss.

It's understandable to be frustrated and mad but show some class. The boys follow your lead. Show them how to act (or react) like champions.

"I don't have any words for this travesty. Every time we come to Arcadia something like this happens.
Between our defense and the refs, there was no way we were going to win the game. I feel like I got held up and robbed tonight."

anonalso said:

The "Game of the Week" was played under a cloudless no breeze California night, both teams anticipating a win, they fought back and forth, touchdowns were scored on the ground, through the air, adjustments made, comebacks hopeful and then the final score:
SM 29
Blair 28

Kevin Mills is an "effing" loser!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The things he says, in the paper no less, are despicable. Way to go Coach Mills, way to set an example.

I believe coach Uhl is cancer to the Temple City High School football coaching staff.

Anonymous said:

Rams defense gives up 2 late TD's thanks to no defensive line pressure. Defensive line coach Uhl should consider hitting the sled rather than the waves in Hawaii. I'm still trying to understand how a dreadfully overrated offensive lineman can just show up and start coaching the defensive line.

since when do yall even get the respect to have a game of the week...PHS IS SORRY and has been sorry since MUIR beat them in the tussle scoring 59 points and stuff...i think Pasadena should just make MUIR the only school in Pasadena and take the little bit of talent that PHS, MARSHALL AND BLAIR have and do something constructive with it!!!
