PASADENA - It was a hot, June evening at Baldwin Park High School when La Salle High School's football team got its first glimpse at new starting quarterback Chase Rettig.
The young sophomore showed signs of promise in his first 7-on-7 passing league competition of the summer.
Rettig's effort was nothing special, just a solid night of running a basic offense.
Fast forward a couple of weeks when the Lancers hosted Arcadia and South Pasadena.
Rettig showed he had come a long way in a short amount of time by throwing a pair of 40-yard touchdown passes.
It was apparent that day the Lancers had their starting quarterback.
"We knew that we wanted to open up the offense right from the beginning of spring, so we made a commitment back in May to spread it out and Chase has responded well, as has the rest of the offense," La Salle coach Ealar Gallagher said. "Being a tenth grader, he's got a great head, great arm and a lot of potential and ability.
"We just want to give him a chance to contribute."
La Salle utilized more of a run-oriented offense last season behind running backs Nathan Bury and David Baier, the latter of whom rushed for 1,218 and 16 touchdowns. Bury had 1,068 yards and 14 scores.
The Lancers' rushing attack made life easy on Lancers graduate Matt Kohorst, who threw for 1,647 yards and 18 touchdowns.
"Last year we didn't pass that much, and passing league really helped me this year in learning coverages," Rettig said. "After passing league was over I felt that we could bring it into the season, and it's worked for us so far."
And so far, he's made it work well.
Rettig has 1,685 passing yards and 15 touchdowns in seven games.
"It's a whole different offense from last year, and it's a lot more confusing from a quarterback's perspective because with all the new stuff we put in, he's got a lot to figure out," Baier said. "He struggled a little at first, but now he's handling it like a senior and leading this team to victories now that we're in league."
With Baier returning in the backfield, Rettig found himself in a comfortable situation where he could contribute and make the offense work.
"David and the rest of the offense, David would admit, have been a key component to his success," Gallagher said. "He's got protection from the line and had the receivers to throw the ball to and they've made the most of the opportunities."
He has three games of more than 300 yards. Rettig's high game came in a 44-28 loss at Huntington Park, when he threw for 359 yards and three touchdowns.
"At times he has done things that I didn't foresee, but we always knew that there was a high up-side," Gallagher said.
Added Baier: "He brings a rocket arm and it doesn't matter how far we run in a pattern down the field, he's going to throw it there."
Ironically, his lowest output of the season came in his last game against Verbum Dei on Oct. 13 in the Camino Real League opener. He was a modest 9-of-15 for 134 yards and a touchdown.
It was enough, however, to lead the Lancers to an important 21-14 victory in a rematch of the 2006 Mid-Valley Division championship game.
Rettig's contribution to the Lancers' offense hasn't come by accident.
According to Gallagher, the sophomore quarterback takes his position seriously.
"It's great to see him continue to work and put in the time on and off the field, and it's paying off," Gallagher said. "He's just becoming a real student of the game."
Perhaps more importantly to Gallagher is Rettig is only a sophomore and will be a main cog in La Salle's offensive plans for two more years after this season.
With his already positive work ethic, Rettig can only get better.
"I'd say the sky's the limit," Gallagher said. "When you have the raw abilities that he has and the dedication and work ethic, I think he can get better and better."
Said Baier: "He's a goofball and you can tell he's a sophomore. He keeps it light at practice, keeps it fun and keeps us smiling. He's a good guy, I like him."

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

While the size of the iPad is much more convenient to carry around then the MacBook Pro, users will notice a loss in power due to it's smaller size.
Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Im a better qb that my brother. hes good and all. But this one time i challenged peyton manning to a throwing contest and I threw it 89 yards and he threw it only 88. so i won. he is stinky. HAHA HEHE. yeah so im the best there is one time i threw for 1,000 yards in 1 game. but chase is ok too
