Matadors pass test
Villalobos' play keys 14-7 win over Titans
By Scott Galetti Staff Writer

SAN GABRIEL - Embroiled in a tie ballgame, San Gabriel High School coach Keith Jones was hoping his team could come up with a big play against visiting San Marino.
The play the Matadors came up with wasn't exactly drawn up in the playbook.
But the play made in the third quarter by junior wide receiver Marcos Villalobos played a huge part in the Matadors' 14-7 victory on Friday.
Matadors quarterback Isaac Valdez had a pass intended for Villalobos intercepted by Alden Weiss.
Rather than give up on the play, Villalobos wrestled the ball away from Weiss to give the Matadors possession.
"We've been practicing working the strip a lot in practice and I had to come through for my team," Villalobos said.
Added Valdez: "You don't see that very often and it just shows you what can happen when someone goes 100 percent until the play's over. That's a great job."
San Gabriel (4-1) took advantage of the reprieve and finished the job four plays later when Valdez hit Angel Puig from 4 yards out to give the Matadors the lead for good.
"We're where we want to be and we just have to go back and practice hard and get ready for Bell Gardens," Valdez said.
San Marino (4-1), fresh off a 75-0 win over Keppel, had 310 yards of offense to 236 for San Gabriel.
But the Matadors were able to string together the necessary drives to pull out the win.
San Gabriel's game plan was altered when running backs Martin Pena (pulled hamstring) and Nick Castillo were knocked out of the game because of injuries.
Valdez finished 19-of-35 for 157 yards and a TD.
Javier Miranda was a busy target, hauling in 11 passes for 97 yards.
"Our game plan was to run the ball, but our running back got hurt so we started passing it," Miranda said. "Our receivers had a lot of work to do."
The Matadors slowed down running back John Trawick enough to keep the Titans in check.
Trawick rushed for 108 yards on 18 carries. He also had three catches for 55 yards and a TD.
"We tried to get him the ball in different ways and get him out in space a little bit," San Marino coach D.R. Moreland said.
Moreland had no trouble with his team's effort.
"Maybe in the first half we were a little bit flat, but I thought our guys rebounded nicely," Moreland said.
San Gabriel scored on its first drive on a 2-yard touchdown run by Pena.
Steven Wright hit Trawick for a 14-yard touchdown pass midway through the second quarter to tie the game 7-7 at the half.
Both teams battled like a pair of prize fighters in third quarter.
San Marino drove to the San Gabriel 14-yard line, but Wright's incomplete pass on fourth-and-4 fell incomplete to turn the ball over to the Matadors.
"Their defensive line played really well and stuffed us pretty good," Moreland said.
Villalobos' heroics soon followed to aide San Gabriel's 85-yard journey to the go-ahead score.
"It was a huge play because they had a chance to come back and we didn't let them," Miranda said. "That was a big play for us."
Added Jones: "I went through several emotions on that play. It was a turning point in the game."
Moreland shared many of those emotions on his sideline.
"That was a big play for both teams," Moreland said. "It was a big play for us that turned into a really big play for them."
The Matadors will try to build on their momentum heading into Almont League play against Bell Gardens.
"We've got a lot of confidence now and we're just getting ready for league," Miranda said. "This is where it really counts."
Wright finished 13-of-22 for 179 yards and a TD for San Marino.

I appreciate the time you put in this work or in this post. Although you have bright ideas, I really can't agree with them. I'm sure there are better ways to walk through this sticky situation. Not trying to flame or be stupid or anything .

I apologize to the Bloggers for some of the inappropriate statements, no real harm intended. I will keep my blogging in good taste and from a Dog’s point of view! Now, with that said, if any of the Muir’s players are upset, well join the club! The city has been killing our coach at every turn and calling are players “LOSERS”! The Dog’s are all in for war! “Angry” is an understatement! The Dog’s fury has started already! We don’t have to wait until the Tussle, because we are about to start mowing everything in front of us the rest of the way! No, mercy and don’t need prisoners, we’re killing the Pacific league!

Dawg87,

Why do you keep bashing Coach Howard for his work as a security guard? Those guys can be an integral part of the school's community too. I did not realize PHS fans were so elitist. You sound like that one San Marino fan (not all SM fans).

I can see you are pretty excited about your team. Cool........that's great.....you should be. But you know what bro, coming on here and talking MAJOR sh#@ about individual players is inappropriate and will come back to haunt you. If you think that the players don't read this and this is just a forum for adults, you are sadly mistaken. Willie WILL read this. Bingo WILL read this. Trust me. If that's your intent, to get in their heads, it will more than likely work against you and your team.

So go ahead, rip away, because when it comes down to it and #33 comes barreling down hill, it's not you that has to meet his pent up anger, it's those players out on the field who will catch his fury right in their mouths. And I for one wish it was YOU instead of them.

Anonymouse, because that's what you are! Classy? You people are out of your minds! When PHS was sorry it was okay! A lot of people hate Mills now! We will beat Arcadia and end that 11year streak as well beating Muir! I know you people are nothing and Rebeldo and Scoot neet to get with the Dogs now! Oh, with Mills being the sorryist coach, how many scholarship is will be dished out? Even, the littlest Trump on PHS Team is getting a scholarship! Muir has a "SECURITY GUARD"! I wont go into the other issues
! Not less yall want some!

Rankings don't mean a thing! PHS has played agaist stiffer competion and it's about to show throw leauge play. I'll say it again, Muir is not a good football team! Their Wr's are slow and their Db's are terrible! The Running back is fat and the QB is a 2nd string Pasadena High player! We are goning to do away with you "Bums"!

Dawg 87 Style said:

Anonymous? "little girl" you are, but that 2nd year vasity team was rank number 9 at the time. The Dogs should not have lost to them anyway! I team has now jelled, so the Dog's fans are about to kill you haters! This is for anybody that's a Stang fan and Arcadia fans this is our year!

BigA said:

New York,

Arcadia has played TWO quality teams and one who played the game of their lives (burbank.) Lynwood is underrated in the fact that they play one of the hardest schedules I have seen yet.
Lets review to support my point

Lynwood's schedule
LB Jordan (decent talent, LB school)
Notre Dame (2 players committed to Notre Dame, one with 3+ offers, top program nationally,)
Arcadia (1 player committed UCLA, 1 other div 1 type kid)
Servite (Two 5 star prospects committed to USC, a top program in So CAL)
Compton Centennial (beat them soundly)

Obviously they have played some very good competition and have some good players themselves. They would beat 90% of the SGV teams.

Arcadia has been winning. End of story.

PHS is overrated, they lsot to a 2nd year varsity team. got KILLED. come on.

Dawg 87 Style said:

Realist?

The Dogs will win the Pacific, because none of these teams are "NOTHING"! Including Muir! Willie is to fat and Bingo can't throw to save his life! Yes, the Dog's haven't won a Tussle in years, but that will stop this year! Muir people are living in the past and looking at the present! The Dogs will stop Muir's running and make Bingo go to the air, which he can't do. So "Realist" if you really are a realist know the Stangs are in deep trouble. The Stangs coaching is about the same as PHS's it might be worse for the simple fact they have a "SECURITY GUARD" as a head coach! I know it's difficult to deal with, but it's Pasadena High Schools time!

New York said:

Arcadia is vulnerable. If for no other reason, they really have not played a quality team since the first week of the season. It is very tough to prepare by playing losing teams. It's not their fault. At the start of the season, it looked like Arcadia had a pretty good schedule.

Arcadia is 5-0 against teams that are a combined 5-20. Take away the week 1 victory, and Arcadia's last four opponents are a combined 2-18. They have another winless opponent this week. By the time they play PHS, Arcadia will have played three teams in a row that still do not have a victory.

With about 5 weeks left in the season, can you tell me who you think are the players to watch ? The top QB'S, WR'S,,RB'S and maybe Linemen? Who's really stepped it up for their team? Big school's and little school's

The Realist said:

dawgs house 07:

Let's be real here. There are five weeks left in the season and your'e already talking about the playoffs? anything can happen man. You won't win the Pacific league, you won't win the tussle, and you won't make it out of the first round of the playoffs. But it's not the kids fault you just need a better coach then the jack @$$ you have over there now. At the end of the season you will come back down to the REAL WORLD. Plain and simple.

The Stang Fan said:

dawgs house 07:

You make it REALLY hard for folks to give the dogs some props. It's been such a crazy year in terms of who beat whom and who scored what vs. whom, but at the end of the day I can say the dogs are headed in the right direction, and I for one did NOT see that coming after their early struggles and staff issues.

So congrats on a good start in the Pacific, and a good league record only makes the Tussle that much more intriguing and packed. We still will NOT lose to you guys though, TRUST ME!

If I had to chose three SGV teams most likely to make it to their CIF quarters, it'd be:

Duarte
Alhambra
Arcadia

Another interesting night in the SGV. Topic for discussion in the WSGV blog...
Name three teams that will make it to the CIF QTRS. (Round Two). I know, I know it depends on match-ups. I would be curious who the bloggers would predict to advance prior to the start of league play in most leagues. This prognostication at this point would also include that the teams you choose would actually advance to CIF. Does anyone feel comfortable with their three picks.

My three:
I am going to go out on a limb....
Monrovia
Duarte (do they count in this area?)
San Gabriel

I look forward to your thoughts....

Monrovia HS did not lose last night. Great gameplan Garrison. I just knew we weren't going to give it up. Don't ask me why, something just told me there was no way we were going to lose last night. Way to go Cats!

NateS said:

I wouldn't crown TC the Rio Hondo Champs just yet. Even Coach Backus acknowledged that a win over La Salle is not a season saver. They still have a ways to go. we'll see how strongly Do comes back. Makes for a good story going into the Blair game next week.

MTOWNFTBL said:

since people usually get switched around during bye weeks, does anyone know if Monrovia has made any Position changes??

La Salle Afficiando said:

Goldenarm ,

Yes, a very hard sight to watch at the La Salle-TC game, not one but two very serious injuries. Two lineman, not even at the point of the tackle. Both happened in the exact same place on the field, both with worried mothers making that long walk to their son.
Ironic that before the game the TC cheerleaders rode on a fire truck around the track, then twice during the game paramedics and fireman showed up to assist the players. Hopefully, both kids will be allright.
TC played very well, I think that they will do well in league.
Note to Mid Valley Division watchers, all five teams in the Camino Real league lost last night, all giving up at least 32 points.
Another note, Concorde de la Salle plays down here at Mission Viejo tonight, it is on TV, FSN.

Hal Lamaster said:

What happened to Alhambra?

Hal Lamaster said:

TC WOWWWWW. Impressive. Are they the team to beat in the Rio Hondo???

Arcadia showed lots of class against Hoover. The Apaches "first" big league game is next week.

Glendale has improved. The final scores don't show it, but against Muir I see the Nitros scored first and were up 13-7 in the second quarter. They just lack the athletes to stay with a good team for more than a half. But they play as hard as they can.

burbanksports said:

Stang Fan-
Just a hunch really. I keep hearing from Glendale people that this team is getting better, good things are ahead,etc...It looks like the Glendale schools against the Burbank schools will be the only excitement for those teams in the Pacific this season.
Don't worry-I'm still sticking with Muir as my pick to win the Pacific.

As an average prognosticator of high school sports I too have mad plenty of bad mistakes in my decisions and commentary, so it's always hard to criticize.

However, I'm quite curious, why did you think Muir was not going to blow out Glendale? Furthermore, what makes you think they will beat either Arcadia or PHS? I simply can not fathom Glendale beating either teams.

The Stang Fan said:

Arcadia fans:

SLOW DOWN here! Why are you guys SO defensive about your score last night. I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think any posters wrote anything negative about your game. Look, just because PHS BLEW out a team you guys utterly struggled against doesn't mean that everyone all of a sudden is questioning your position as the top team in the WSGV. Relax Apache fans.

And when does 48-0 equate to "running up the score," and showing "no class." Man, SOME of you Apache fans have really got your panties in a bunch.

Pre-game jitters about next weeks match-up vs. PHS possibly?

Anonymous said:

No one is down on Arcadia - they showed class and got alot of underclassmen playing time, which will be valuable down the stretch and next year. This isn't the BCS - there is a playoff at the end of the regular season and Star News rankings are meaningless. Hear that SM.

Goldenarm said:

There was a tough game being played in the Arcadia Methodist hospital ER last night...a place where a couple families of the kids from the TC/LaSalle game ended up-until way past midnight. One LaSalle athlete suffered a broken leg and possible ankle dislocation, word was Doug Howard, senior TC lineman, had a significant knee injury, a couple combatants from the earlier JV game were also banged up or worse and were exiting the ER late last night. The talk of great blocks and long passes had turned to concerns about knee braces, rehab and possible surgery. This is by no means meant as an accurate injury report - in fact I hope the info I got is wrong. Good luck and a speedy recovery to these LaSalle/TC players.

Swamy said:

These were my picks before the week as published in the blogs. Not a bad week however I did miss the Alhambra pick.

Pasadena over Burbank
Even with bad coaching the kids will win this one.

Arcadia over Hoover
Hoover should close down

Muir over Glendale
Glendale needs to higher role models as coaches.

Alhambra over El Monte
Alhambra is to mean.

Blair over Golden Valley
Two words - Scat backs

Bosco Tech over Cantwell
Who cares, really?

South Pasadena over Keppel
SP played a tough first half against Alhambra

Harvard over La Canada
No Heroes means many loses in football.

Temple City over La Salle
TC wins one for their coach

Maranatha over Rio Hondo
Maranatha just cause

Rosemead over Orange
Orange? Enough said.

San Gabriel over San Marino
Karma (75-0)

Saugus over St. Francis
The time of year Jim Bonds teams fold like a bad poker hand

Los Angeles Baptist over Marshall
Marshall played a intre squad game and both teams lost

fballfan said:

hmm interesting game tonight with hoover and arcadia. the coaches took arcadias first string out midway through the second when they were only up by 21? why? i know its good to keep your kids healthy but why so early? walker played a quarter in a half (but displayed an amazing reggie bush like run covering basically the whole field in one play), golper with 2 minutes left (INT to the house) and willm, picard, and other key players didnt even suit up. i guess its good to ave your players stay healthy for the bigger opponents and not worrying about KILLING a team just beat them and move on. so for all the bloggers who will down arcadia for being "close" to hoover, keep in mind the 2nd and 3rd string played against hoovers 1st string the whole night. it also shows class on arcadia's part because they could've easily run up the score, with the first team but unlike muir and other teams....they didnt.

(arcadia had 27 penalties! inexperience)
