MONROVIA - With fires burning in Southern California this week, air quality has been a concern, forcing the cancellation of many area athletic events.
One of many rescheduled events took place on Wednesday in the hot and stuffy confines of Monrovia High School's gymnasium as the Wildcats' girls volleyball team hosted South Pasadena.
Perhaps the extra day's rest was just what the Tigers needed against the Wildcats in a battle for second place in the Rio Hondo League.
They also had the incentive of avenging a heartbreaking five-game loss to Monrovia at home on Oct. 4.
A loss where South Pasadena had the Wildcats on the ropes, but couldn't finish.
The Tigers finished the job this time around - and in impressive fashion.
South Pasadena used a dominating front line to sweep the Wildcats in three games, 25-14, 30-28, 25-21.
"This is our biggest win of the season because it helps determine our place in league," junior Kirsten Taylor said.
Taylor literally had a big hand in the victory as she collected 12 blocks.
She combined with Claudia Luck, Katie Baumgarten, Kristen Tasso and Alyssa Fritz to keep Monrovia at bay the entire match.
"Our front line was playing well today," Taylor said. "We came here determined and knew what we had to do, and we came in and finished it."
The Tigers (7-6, 5-2) prevented Monrovia (9-5, 3-2) from finishing the second game with a victory.
Monrovia had three game-point chances, but were thwarted each time.
"We let them come back, but we didn't give up and pulled through when we needed to," said Baumgarten, who led the Tigers with 18 kills.
South Pasadena finally won the game when a Monrovia hit narrowly landed out of bounds.
"I actually thought we won the game," Monrovia coach David Jones said. "But our girl hit it out on the joust."
A soft kill by Sakura Koshikawa broke an 18-18 deadlock in the third game and ignited a 7-3 Tiger run.
Tasso's ace capped the run and the match.
When the Tigers' front line wasn't thwarting the Wildcats, Emma Kikuchi's defense was, as she collected 16 digs.
Luck added 12 defensive digs to go along with five kills.
"Our energy was the best it's ever been and our setter (Hana Kikuchi) had a really great game," Baumgarten said. "It was the best match we've played all season.
"We practiced so hard for this match because every year we have close games with them."
While South Pasadena was on its game, Monrovia struggled to grasp any momentum.
"It's really disappointing," Jones said. "They weren't game-focused and came out flat-footed.
"We played a decent game, but not to our potential. It's heartbreaking to lose in three."
Freshman Tirah Le'au did her best to keep the Wildcats in the match.
Le'au, who had 18 kills in the first meeting between the two teams, posted a team-high 16 kills, while adding 10 blocks, four digs and an ace.
Katrina Graves-Johnson and Rachel McWhirter each added six kills.
Johnson also had six blocks, while sophomore Brittany Puffinburger notched four kills, four blocks and a match-high six service aces.

iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

I¡¯m sure we all had the conversation: Do you really need new China Knock Off Handbags£¿ You have a closet full of bags and we just use the ¡ and when to tell them what you have to answer in your attempt, your ability, a language not understood. That is probably true, so we explain things so that people understand why we need a new bag!
