La Canada cruises past Ayala to advance to title match

PASADENA - La Canada High School's boys water polo team has had one collective goal in mind this season - to reach the CIF-Southern Section championship match.
The top-seeded Spartans needed to leap over one last hurdle to stay on course as they faced off against Ayala in the Division III semifinals Wednesday at Pasadena City College.
La Canada's game plan was to press the Bulldogs into handling the ball and making mistakes.
Behind a solid team defensive effort, the Spartans pressed their way into the finals with a 17-8 victory over the Bulldogs.
The win sends the Spartans (22-8) into Saturday's DivisionIII finals against defending champion Montebello in a rematch of last year's title match, won by the Oilers 12-10.
"Montebello's a tough team and and that's who we want to play in the finals," Borisoff said.
It's the third straight year the Spartans have reached the finals, all against Montebello.
La Canada won the title in 2005 with a 14-11 win over the Oilers.
Spartans coach Larry Naeve is impressed with his team's ability to make it back to the finals.
"It tells me the strength of these guys to get back to the finals for a third straight year," Naeve said. The kids work awfully hard and they deserve this."
Senior Max Scott scored seven goals and Spencer Borisoff added five as the Spartans controlled the match from the national anthem.
La Canada's defense collected steal after steal in the first quarter, resulting in numerous breaks.
The Spartans outshot Ayala (18-9) 43-20 with many of the Bulldogs' chances coming in the second half with the game already decided.
Scott put La Canada on the board early as he deflected a shot off Ayala goaltender Troy Kurz into the net less than two minutes into the game.
The Spartans continued to use tenacious defense to gain point-blank opportunities.
After La Ca ada came up empty on three straight close-range opportunities, the floodgates eventually opened to allow the Spartans to put the game out of reach early.
Borisoff scored on a break with three minutes to play in the quarter.
After a steal by Nathaniel Vail, Borisoff lobbed a shot over the head of Kurz with 33.6 seconds left.
Tim Perry then got into the act by stealing a errant pass and firing a shot into the net to give the Spartans a 4-0 lead after one quarter.
La Canada increased that cushion to 11-3 at the break, outshooting the shellshocked Bulldogs 22-6 in the opening 16 minutes..
Cameron James scored three goals to lead Ayala, which won the Division V title in 2003.
Ayala was playing without one of its top players, Tyler Sissoyev, who was ejected near the end of Saturday's 10-4 win in the quarterfinals win over Bonita.
"The original disappointment was losing Tyler," Ayala coach Paul Marceau said. "I knew our backs were against the wall even with him.
"La Canada is the No. 1 seed for a reason. I'm proud that my boys made the semifinals."

Metropolis of Melbourne is quantity a person. The depth of their redesign was astounding, and its applications across all media is equally fresh new and purposeful. I'm unsure if AOL meets the same amount of usefulness. Certain, it's a step above the prior style, but simply how much a lot more so? And to what stop? Effectively, that's my two cents. Peace.

The new Broadway show, Lombardi, which opened at Center in the Square on Thursday night, is widely being touted as a play that will get men excited about theater. At the showing I attended this week, there were several audience members clad in green-and-gold Bart Starr jerseys, and veteran NFL punter Sean Landeta participated in a talkback session afterward. This show isn’t going to attract your typical theatergoing clientele, to say the least.

I'll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Can I quote you in my report for school?

CIF CHAMPS '07 BABY, LCWP FOR LIFE

getreal said:

Well until you make any counter arguments, my points are more valid. I said I know very little about water polo and I simply enjoy RHL athletics. Just sounds like a bunch of jealous hating here. I am open minded and just want to hear the whole story as I have not witnessed the games for my own.

getalife said:

wow...great points getreal.

getreal said:

I haven't heard anyone complain about LC in the past and so I presume that your so called "cheap shots" are just LC playing physical. Unless the refs say anything, there isn't a basis on which to complain about it and I highly doubt that LC could get away with cheap stuff given that CIF playoffs are usually run by experienced refs.

Wasn't Borisoff the coach of LC?

Does La Canada have problems with algae?

Derek Borisoff said:

Wow, lots of petty b.s. here. This is CIF playoffs, not "Y" Winners. Teams should be working on what will get them through the finals. What are they suppose to do, tell their subs in the fourth quarter to not play hard when it could possibly be their last game? La Canada has great scholar athletes that work hard all year long. We are proud to have such a rivalry with a great program like 'Bello. BTW, Coach Naeve currently has 3 former players playing for USC. Come to the finals in Irvine and I will show you my boots and give you voice lessons.

Save water-drain the pools.

getreal said:

So is the problem with LC the way they play or because they run up the scores? I'm not familiar with water polo so I don't really understand whats going on.

Hal Lamaster said:

Success makes lots of enemies. Teams fear La Canada but don't respect them. There is a line between beating teams and beating them up. La Canada too often finds itself doing the latter. Great team, GREAT program, great coaches. The missing ingredient is class. Put that in the mix and you have the ideal aquatics program.

Poly lost to Cerritos 8-7.

Anonymous said:

Did Poly win?

Not only do they play dirty, but the refs seemingly always overlook their dirty style of play. When La Canada gets nervous, they cheap shots to gain momentum. However, now that the refs are neutral in the CIF finals, La Canada won't be able to get away with their unfiar style. This isn't to diminsh their great talent and strong individual abilities, but at times they simply do not play fair.

Anonymous said:

whats with all the animosity towards LC? I'm just curious as to what they did to be called as unsportsmanlike.

Anonymous said:

Larry Naeve and Derrick Borisoff are now in engaged in a relationship. Naeve has realized that he cannot actually coach without Borisoff and therefore has decided to allow Borisoff to be the team dad. He is quite fond of cowboy boots and loves his deep voice. La Canada water polo for life.

Kelly Clements remarked Wednesday night that South Pasadena is an amazing team and that he has seen them grow so much as a team. He believed that they were truly a threat but they did not preform their best. Montebello as a whole respects the South Pasadena program.

Anonymous said:

Montebello is a phomenal team and they lay the hurt on La Canada. They win in a respectful manner and La Canada has no dignity or respect or class or sportsmanship. They win off dirty play and they have refs that allow their ridiculous style of play. Montebello will surely take the title

go montebello!

at least they have some class
