FOOTBALL: All-Area teams
Ok kiddies, I'm taking a page out of one of Fred's old posts.

David Allen and Jesse Savage should be locks for first team defense. 145 tackles, an int, and 3 sacks for david. 128 tackles, a sack, and 2 fumble recoveries for jesse. the only reason other peoples stats look better is because they had a couple playoff games. These two were incredible linebackers, and Davids season wouldve been even better had he not been injured for a game. Jesse is often overlooked because of the season david had and the fact that he played defensive end last year. They deserve first team.
hey scott,
when are you posting the all-league selections??
My final all-area list:

Trawick might have made this but strength of schedule hurt him to me. Most votes are relegated to Pacific because that is what I have seen the most.

Speaking about the small schools, the best running back I saw in that group was the kid at Flintridge Prep, Adam Ross. All due respect to the Finchamp kid at Rio Hondo the Ross kid was a load to handle.Toughest runner I saw all season. Just my two cents.
"Hoover" and "league champs" in the same sentence just doesn't work. Your last league title in football was in 1954. You guys didn't win a game this season and were destroyed by every team in your league. Even Glendale beat up on you, 35-7.
Congratulations to the South Pas players that won first team Rio Hondo league honors:
First-team offense AND defense:
David Allen (TE/LB)
Steven Colliau (WR/DB)
And offensive back of the year: QB Jonathan Troast
Well-deserved, great work guys!
HOW COME HOOVER GETTIN NO LOVE WE DIDN'T HAVE A GREAT SEASON BUT WE HAD PLAYERS IN NUMBER 54 AND 73 THERE BOTH GREAT PLAYERS.
THERE IS ONLY 2 TEAMS IN WHICH I AGREE IN THERE PICKS THAT'S PHS AND MUIR. THEY DOMINATED US.
PHS HAS QB#3 HAD A GREAT GAME AGAINST US HE SHOULD GO 2 FIRST TEAM WR #4 AND #2 ALSO HAD GREAT GAMES.
MUIR HAD A DENFENSE
THEY WERE LEAD BY THE JUNIORS #44 HE HAD 8 TACKLES AND A FUMBLE RECOVERY AND THE JUNIOR #20 HAD A 11 TACKLE GAME AT DB. THESE 2 FROM MUIR HAVE 2 AT LEAST MAKE HONORABLE MENTION.
BUT DON'T FORGET ABOUT ARE KIDS GIVE US SO LOVE WE HAVE GOOD PLAYERS JUST WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR LEAGUE CHAMPS
Anon, the reason Savage isn't well known is because he was overshadowed by the performance of David Allen this year and he played DE last year because the LB spots were held by Allen and Parrish so he hasn't got much exposure but the kid can play.
Hey Goldenarm,
I've seen people asking who you are...
Just because you have some qu33r name you post under doesn't mean you're not an Anon aswell!!!
Yeah..... Thanks............
3 people have now talked about this jesse savage. ive never heard about him until recently but i saw his stats and those are really good. how come ive never heard of him until now? your take, scott?
SP players that should on one of the teams are Jonathan Troast QB who in my opinion almost single handedly moved the offense up and down the field seeing as how there was no running game. David Allen MLB/TE should be on first team as he led the area in tackles I believe with 145 and at TE was a huge target for Troast. Also Jesse Savage who had around 125 tackles, Erik Michel who led the league DB's in tackles and INT's with 5. Steven Colliau should also get nominated. He had more receptions that Connor Berry of last years SP team and was 10 yards short of having more yds. than Berry, and the same applies for Jackson Kennedy. I'm not saying that all these guys deserve to be on a team but I do feel that all of them should be up for consideration especially Allen who should be on first team and Troast who I think should be on second.
Smith And Brown belong on the 1st team..
Arcadias whole o-line plenty of studs there. They were small but alot of heart.
TCs O-Line looked pretty bad early on, but really put it together, especially at the end of the season! They were Dominate at La Puente!! But I think it had a lot to do with coaching because there was never a real standout.
Nick Frye was decent at times but missed a lot of obvious blocks that could be seen in the backfield. TCs Tackles looked to be the best players on the line this year! One is a Jr. O'lette! Big, looked pretty good when D. Howard went down. The other kid is Yang. Sr. but didn't play last year.
The only posts on here are about Do, but even when Escobedo was in, these guys looked good the second half of the season.
O'lette or Yang for 2nd Team, at least Honorable Mention!
lovefootball--
Figured it out. A grandparent following a grandson, that is terrific. My father died last year and he loved watching Trevor play almost as much as he did me.
Citi to turn around soon--infusion of $$ will help...
I am familiar with Trinity but I suspect Trevor overlooked them because they don't have a broadcast journalism department. It's getting late in the process now, hopefully the schools he is considering will serve him well and accept him. Thanks.
Eddie can be tracked at
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Eddie%20McKiernan&pos=P&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=519013
or just go to minorleaguebaseball.com and type in his last name.
other than the fact that he is about twelve years old... CHASE RETTIG
2500 + yards
25 TD (only 11 piks)
make your pick for him now and you will be able say you called it in a few years when your watching him on saturdays and sundays
SP FB Fan | November 29, 2007 8:56 PM
the kids name is jesse savage. he had a great year. Almost 130 tackles, a sack, and two fumble recoveries. Although its not a stat, he had some big hits at the two games i saw him play in. He should be considered for first, if not, second team all are.
First of all I’ve missed you “BLOGGERS”
How could “Tyron Crokcom” not be player of the year and he had over 3,000 passing and 900 yards rushing? You people amaze me! I see “Muir” fans using “Arcadia” people to disguise them selves and that just tells me, you people are sick! You look at my “TRANSGRESSIONS” (Arcadia game) and have the most to say, but you hide behind this “BLOG” to be disrespectful by using another name or just being “ANONYMOUS” ! You wonder why they have no respect for the “BLACK COMMUNITY”! I’m a drinker that knows, what is going on? Your sober! Shame on you “SELFRIGHTOUS” leaders!
Yours truly!
THERE ARE SOME GREAT PLAYER FOR PASADENA THAT SHOULD MAKE FIRST TEAM LIKE T.CROCKON
WR. MICHAEL HARRISON
WR. ARNES IKNER
I ASLO HAVE 2 GIVE SOME LOVE TO THE WEST SIDE OF PASADENA IN MUIR
THEY HAVE A COUPLE OF PLAYERS IN
RB. YOUNGBLOOD#33
QB. RUBEN#23
WR OWENS#22
DL. SAMULES#52
DL. AGUILAR#44
DL. PATTON#51
DB. DANILES#2
DB. THOMPSON#3
DB. GRAVES#8
THESE PLAYERS ARE REAL BALLERS ALL OF THESE PLAYER REPRESENT PASADENA STAR NEWS
As the father of a former SPHS FB player who played a few years ago, I attended most of SP games this year. Potential candidates from the Tigers for your 1st or 2nd Team list should include John Troast and David Allen. The Honorable Mention group to be looked at and chosen from should include Will Smiland, Steven Colliau, Jackson Kennedy, and Jesse Slaughter along with Eric Michel who had a great last half of League.
I saw several other great looking RHL players from most teams, including but not limited to Williams, Haggard and Daro from Monrovia, Do, Reasoner, and Belcher from TC, Fuller, Broadnax and their big LB (name escapes me)from Blair, Trawick from SM and I am sure a couple from LC but I did not get to that game. Surely several others from these teams should get an Honorable Mention look. Unfortunately, I did not get their names (mostly Lineman). Good luck though Scott with the selections. there was apparently a lot of individual talent around this part of the San Gabriel Valley.
I'm sorry but whoever posted that about Muir was not me. They were using my alias.
Hey Scott, when do the All-League Roster come out in the paper. I'm exited to see the Rio Hondo's All-League Roster, and all the other leagues as well.
Big A
How about the other 8 players on the Muir D. Do they get an automatic bid ,too. Don't the All-Area players have to be selected based on their individual accomplishments?
Finchamp -
Well done perhaps. Can you figure out who my grandson is?
More importantly, can you tell me when Citi stock is going to turn around?
Tell Trevor to look into Trinity in San Antonio.
Good luck, picking a school is not easy -
BigA,
Damn,13 a game. My sombrero is off on that one. Excellent stat with which to make your point.
I think the 3 junior for muir should make if not first team at least secound or honorable mention the 3 junior are
Chris Dunlap
Fernando Aguilar
Marcus Graves
All 3 of these juniors started everygame in a D which only allowed 13 points a game
My guess is most of you bloggers are multi-sport fans (and multi-sport bloggers too)... Does anyone know how Monrovia's Eddie McKiernan did after signing?
" ...unless requested"? Is that a backhand way of saying "yes" to the question?
Enough already.
Isn't Wartburg the school in Harry Potter?
DAVID VAN DER LAAN and GREG FISHER ..
Please ask around if you are not familiar with these two Maranatha linemen!
Well deserving!!
shelby klein...end of discussion
SG
At center, Nick Fry was the only returning starter this year from TC's much praised 06 O-line. I've heard conflicting things regarding his effectiveness this year. Lets face it, unless they blow the snap, not alot of dialogue swirls around about the center position. Maybe someone else can yea/or nay on Fry's year. For a munchkin - he's fended off some big nose tackles this year.
My nod still goes to Eric Becher - even his 4 point stance is a thing of beauty.
The all-area teams will be coming about around Christmas.
Just to clarify, this post is to get discussion going. There are some areas I'm still going over like linemen. I'm pretty set on POY and coach of the year.
Dear Anonymous 4:28
You are correct, we were watching a different game.
Unfortunately, Rettig was sacked one time on the left "Blind" side.
With a couple of minutes to go in La Salles last game vs. Santa Clara, Hauk was removed from the game for retaliating to a late hit against his quarterback.
The very next play, Retting was sacked.
Thanks again to all the wonderful games the San Gabriel Valley teams gave us. It will be hard to wait till next September.
Miketev,
You seem to have a pretty good sense of football players and talent.
Could you give me a breakdown of the Div 1 talent that you've seen play this year? Certain individuals that you think could play Div 1 ball and compete.
Thanks,
BigA
Arcadia's JR Todd Golper:
122 tackles 11 sacks
2 Int (both for TD's)
30 Catches for 528 yards for 6 TD's
Damn good season.
After all this talk of the All-Area team...when does it actually come out? If it was mentioned, I must have not seen it.
Matt,
Kevin Hess now plays football at Div 1-AA, SLO.
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/7499442?MSNHPHCP>1=10637#
Strong words by a black sports writer regarding the death of Sean Taylor (redskins)
Good luck.
Thanks for the info New York. I should have clarified-it is women's athletics that we're dealing with and I think MIT's women's teams are very competitive. I'm having to learn the girls side of things as we progress.
Burbank,
Many of those schools are women's colleges. I'm sure their LAX, field hockey and soccer teams are more competitive than the football programs, for those that have them. After having watched several Pomona College games a few years ago, I realized that many small school rosters are filled with former All-CIF players who may have been overlooked, or a bit shorter or a step slower than a D-1 recruit at the same position. One of my former players was captain of MIT's football team this year. He was a tough high school player and obviously smart, but he was not a track star...more of a tennis star.
These small schools are rich in tradition for the overall college experience. Some of these smaller school coaches are limited to telephone recruiting...they are not allowed to leave campus to recruit.
MIT does not give much support to their football team. Some out in Claremont don't either, but the diploma's are great and I think the small classroom and significant contact with professors prepares the students well for graduate school.
Did you see College Game Day on ESPN two weeks ago? They were at the Williams vs. Amherst game!
Poly didn't have any "hyped" players this year as someone asked earlier. The only one that comes to mind is RB/SS John Pennington. He had quite a few yards rushing along with 5 interceptions I believe.
New York-
Do you know anything about the NEWMAC schools and/or other D2 - D3 schools in the Northeast?
Finchamp
Thanks for the info. The coaches at schools similiar to Wartburg have been stressing the "college experience" and the academic atmosphere at their schools so we'll be checking them out.
No surprise that Oxy sits atop his list with no mention of the Leos or Sagehens toward the East...
From the comments his coach has mentioned about character and leadership, I'm sure Trevor will do just fine in life going to any school.
LSfan,
you must've been watching a different game because he was sacked twice within 4 minutes by the same person on the same side.... HIS BLIND SIDE
Just curious if anyone knows what happened to Kevin Hess who played in 2006 at Arcadia.
burbanksports--
Wartburg was a BIG surprise in many respects. A 155 year old college with beautiful campus and enrollemnt around 1800. Quite possibly the best D-III sports facility in the country after spending $30M on it. They have a state-of-the-art broadcast studio and strong communication arts program. Very impressive. Probably a notch below the Claremont/Pomona/Oxy group academically but solid--seems a real possibility. Check 'em out at www.wartburg.edu.
Finchamp
Looks like he's made some great choices. What were your impressions of Wartburg? I'll be going to see a couple of schools in Iowa this spring.
Small school fan--
I completely agree and you are right. While most all kids dream of playing pro only "super freaks" (in a good way) make it there. Trevor is greatly limited by the gene pool he comes from but hope springs eternal for every kicker--even a few that were tending bar before being called up!
Finchamp
Just know that most of these bloggers have NEVER played college ball so they really can't speak to the fact that your son has a chance to play. D1 or D3 who cares.. I don't believe your son whats to play pro. He just wants to have the whole college experience.. I say good for him. I hope he gets to play and enjoys himself. Good luck Trevor you seem like a good kid
burbanksports--
Willamette pretty good football at D-III level as are Linfield and even Whitworth of late. At D-III it appears his interest lies with Occidental and Wartburg in Iowa--both have shown considerable interest and we just returned from Wartburg before Thanksgiving. Not looking at Portland State--Trevor is surprisingly well grounded in his focus on the academic side and has interest in broadcast journalism--strong at Northwestern, Cal Poly SLO and Northwestern, all of which he has applied to.
Finchamp
How about Willamette in Oregon or Portland State?
New York--
We've discussed that and specifically when Brown requested info etc. I'm sure you will agree that an Ivy League consideration could be deemed "careful what you wish for." Your experience at Harvard will likely attest to the fact that the academic grind is considerable and they allow little slack for athletes. Not surprising, it gets pretty cold back there in the Fall too--a HS kid's perspective...
Paul,
Most Ivy League schools lack depth at kicker. He should contact them.
anon--
You guys slay me. You seem to know TJ well...He's 188 in clothes--come see him in a basketball uniform. RH Prep was in Washington this summer at UW camp. Aggressive on a blog--that's good stuff! If you consider this is aggressive I suggest you find a golf blog.
Finchamp:
I think you are diminishing your kids accomplishements and chances by so aggressively pushing him.
It is what is is...Give it a rest...I think some bloggers are pushing your buttons as you continue to bite.
Unfortunately your son played against mostly other small schools so we'll NEVER know.
UW has the SoCal camp?
WC has a camp in SoCal?
188 lbs in gear!
Anonymous--
No letters or DVDs sent out by us unless requested. He's legitimate 188 lbs--decent size at 17. I know the recruiting biz. He was invited to USC on combine day, he was seen at UW during their football camp and Oregon sent a letter at end of last season--nothing solicited or rosy. He declined interest in two solicitations from Brown--Rhode Island not on his radar. My consistent efforts are minimal at best and mostly directed at misguided assessments--again, if you are in the know you best not refer to his playing weight or stats from his sophomore year. But hey thanks for keeping tabs on him
Not sure if this is the best way to handle this. There are maybe two or three voices in here that even have the ability to be objective. No one has seen anyone play. The only unanimous picks that I've seen are Tyron Crockom, Michael Harrison, Todd Golper, Devin Fuller.
Look at the League MVPs / first-team picks / talk to the coaches, Scott.
I haven't read Greg Fisher's name yet. He was a workhorse lineman for Maranatha and didn't leave the field as he went both ways and special teams!
Next to Van Der Laaan he was their most valuable player.
Burbank schools are not in PSN area!
Hey, I played in the Pacific league and I Do NOT agree with Burbank's assessment. He wouldn't have ran the ball at any of the 3 Pasadena schools (Blair, Muir, PHS) and he doesn't have the speed to play D. That leaves him to kick and we have some pretty decent legs already!
LaSalle, OL Hauk #77 is my pick.
Dear Finchamp Dad,
When you say "merited attention" does that mean you got a form letter back in response to your letters?
I've seen your kid play. He gives it his all. On both sides of the ball, too. But competing against the likes of Prep, Poly and Maranatha is not a true test. What is he about 170lb linebacker/running back/kicker?
I hope for the best for all these kids and mean no ill will... but I think you're looking through rose colored glasses.
Maybe he should earn some mention if nothing else for YOUR consistent efforts!
Good Luck.
That Finchamp kid would have been an all Pacific League player.
He would have started and probably gone both ways at either Burbank school.
lovefootball--
Gee I think I figured out who your son is....
anonymous 11:30pm--
I wonder if you have seen many "small ball" teams play this year. I know there are many on this blog that love to read what they write and stir the pot. Your comments about small school players may have SOME merit but if you want to single out my kid know your facts. I happen to know the Finchamp kid very well and I've seen a lot of HS football at all levels in this area. I also played in college and understand the game. Although I am a parent and definitely biased I am fair with a clear perspective. There's no MAYBE about Trevor's kicking stats or ability--his #s have merited attention from UW, USC and Oregon. Check his stats, they are at the top for the entire region. Those #s are posted after playing on both sides of the ball. Furthermore Trevor would fit into any program in the SGV, possibly in a different position and not playing both ways but definitely a starter and that's a fact! You lose credibility on this pick.
There is no way the 3 juniors who started all year on muir's D which only allowed 13 points a game should not be on first, secound or at least honorable mention those junior juniors had a great season there names are
Chris Dunlap
Fernando Aguilar
Marcus Graves
These kids are the future of this team can't wait to see them nexy year.
Temple City is not going to have their normal representative number of nominees this year. Reasner is a lock at first team linebacker. Do and Becher are the two remaining players who come to mind. Becher led the team with sacks, impressive since he was usually aligned as a NT in the congested middle and saw double teams most Fridays. His solo tackle numbers were not especially high though. The dark horse would be
Escobedo - he gave 120% all year, but I don't think his stats will land him in the mix. He was spectacular against Blair..gaining 170 plus yds
St Francis,
No way is there 800 boys at SF each year the school lets in between 150 and 160 boys. The number of boys at SF is closer to 600. And the only reason that SF plays DIII is that school is myopic and still thinks that this is the 60's.
Calling ALL small school fans:
Your player(s) should be judged in comparison to All Local talent. Not just how they did in your league/schedule...It wouldn't be fair to the kids who slugged it out in the upper divisions.
You gotta ask yourselves how would this kid have done in another program? Better yet: What would Youngblood or Do's numbers be had they played for Poly or Prep?
VanDerLan a stud and would have excelled wherever he played.
Finchamp? MAYBE he would have kicked for someone?
Rettig? Not sure he'd have those TDs against Pacific league level talent.
Flewelling and Wolters? I've seen Maranantha play twice. They are scrappy D13er's but these fine young men would have been special teams players at most local bigger programs.
PERHAPS THE PSN COULD HAVE A SEPARATE ALL AREA SMALL SCHOOLS TEAM????
Dear Anonymous 3:38.
As a MHS graduate, yes, I was at the game.
And I stand by my statement, nobody and I mean no one, got past Hauk to get to Rettig on his blind side. Once the quarterback leaves the pocket and his pass protection, the rules change.
Congrats to MHS & LSHS for a great year!
Arcadia's players:
1st team:
Troy Amhaz RB/SS
Casey Picard FB/DE/LB
Todd Golper TE/LB
2nd team:
Donnie Fields DL/OL
Lars Guermullo OL
Honorable Mention:
Kevan Walker QB/DB
Eric Willim WR/DB
Small School Fan,
Look at their stats wont help their standing.
Maranatha should not have more than 1 1st teamer and not more tahn 1 or 2 second teamers. The quality of football is just significantly lower. Nothing against the players themselves because they work just as hard as everyone else, but the kids who play in tougher divisions and put up better or equal stats deserve more recognition.
Finchamp deserves it because he has been the leader of RHP.
I haven't heard anything of any Poly players or Flintridge players regarding hype. Last year at Poly, Hirschman as a great player and deserved it. (Went to Harvard for football)
from Maranatha
David Vander Laan #54 OL/DL
one heck of a player
Tom Flewelling #22 A beast LB
Caz Wolters #64 OL meanest guy on the line ( in a good way)
All the above should be first team look at their stats.
2nd team Mark Love and Robert Sharpe..
GO BIG RED
Picking an offensive line is difficult, but watching the physicality and intensity of Caz Wolter at Maranatha was something the last two years.
He made giant holes for Mark Love and Robert Sharpe and did an excellent job of protecting a new sophomore QB. He also did a fine job on nose when put in on short yardage downs.
Also warned at least twice every game by officials to "tone it down".
corey dolan??? who is that. i hate arcadia with a passion but i know talent when i see it and the best corner in the area is kevin walker for arcadia. i mean we lost to them and everything but i give props to this kid he had our receivers on lockdown and that one hand pick he had was beautiful. like i said im not tryin to jump on his jock but the kid has game and he deserves that 1st team CB award. probably all purpose too. trump i love you but he had you on lock mah dude hahaha
GO DAWGS!!!!
corey dolan was not lockdown at all i dont know why he is even metioned, against cantwell he had a penalty that could've lost la salle the game
i want to say phs should have alot of first team all league this year.tyron, arness, micheal, but i like #22 he made plays for them this year.i want to also give props to #50 and #55 i seen those big boys put players on their backs all year long. they would definitly make my first team all league and area.does anyone know the names of those big boys and if they coming back
off the leash/Huckster!!!!
You already know the Dawgs aint gonna be good next year. I know you didnt say the "home depot center" i damn near laughed my head off on that one. gift from Canyon springs? didn't the article say that they tried an onside with just a little than one minute to go and that your reciever caught a 50 yard tipped pass? As they say one gift (or two) deserves another. smashmouth football? you are too funny, if you guys wanna play tough you need to hire Tucker, now that's what I call smashmouth.
The best DB in the area is La Salle's corey dolan. the kid was lockdown
Patrick Hauk is a great pass and run blocker and deserves to be all area for sure. And apparently something was going right in the protection during the monrovia game when Rettig torched monrovia and led la salle to a W
I second the motion for Patrick Hauk at OL. A QB does not throw for 2500 yards (11th in the CIF Southern Section) without good pass protection.
LSFan,
are you kidding me... nobody touched him from the left side???? you must've not seen the Monrovia game... Josh Lowden had 2 sacks off of his side
St. Francis is not a "small school." We have between 750-800 boys and compete in Div. III. Schools like Blair and Muir that are considered bigger schools have about 600-700 boys. Hell even Orange Lutheran only has about 500-600 boys and no one would dare call them a "small school."
anon
ST Francis only has about 600 kids yes, their all boys but that still smaller than the local public schools.Maybe the a mid school size?
Since when did St Francis become a "Small School" ? It is an all boys school still, isn't it?
Willie Youngblood and Will Do for running backs
David VanDerLaan from Maranatha played huge! He's a big time player stuck in a small school. He would have excelled on any level.
Mark Love's limited season (due to injuries) should be good enough to earn 2nd team honors?
LSFan: Wood definitely is the real deal. He also has one of the biggest front lines I've seen in some time to run behind. I still think Fuller over at Blair is quicker. Imagine what he, Youngblood, Amhaz, Brown and Smith, just to name a few, could do behind that line.
Small school fan: The picks haven't come out yet. This is a post to get opinions on how the teams should shape up.
isaac valdez QB, matt matsuda OL/DL, and javier miranda Wr/Db
Reasner from temple city will be on it for the second straight year and deservedly so, but I have a feeling Do will be relegated to second team status. Too bad, Temple City was a totally different team with him healthy. Good luck on Saturdays next year to both of these young men.
Scott,
Can you share your picks from the local smaller schools ... Poly, RHP, Maranatha, La Salle and St Francis. Thanks sometime these guys get over looked and I'ld love to hear your thoughts.
Dear Scott, Thank you for the wonderful reporting this football season.
I know he's not in our area, but I'd like to see some reporting on Cierre Wood of Santa Clara. He is the real deal! Remember that name!
I would like to nominate for OL-Big #77 Patrick Hauk of La Salle. At 6'4" 230lbs, he protected Quarterback, Chase Rettig's blind side. No one got in to touch Chase all year on the left side. Hauk also pulled and set major holes with his big blocks for Baier, Doeppel and Rettig to run thru. Also played DL.
I want to thank all of you doubters and haters of PHS football. With such overwhelming support it is apparent that we trully did a great job this year. Yeah we literally dropped the ball enroute to that semi-final match up with colton but the key to the this post is the fact that we had control of our destiny at all times this season. From the opening game vs Harvard Westlake to that last sickening gift we gave canyon Springs.Yea we could have kicked a FG the drive before and then maybe we wouldnt have needed the two point conversion but that is not our stlye. This year was the Dawn of a new ERA here in the SGV. All the games we lost this year were lost due to our own errors , not forced errors. For all yall stangs out there that are happy that Crock will be leaving with trump and Arness. I wouldnt be too happy because next year its gonna be smashmouth fotball with a little memory of T, Trump, And #2 mixed in. The defense is gonna singlehandely win the Pacific League Title enroute to the Home Depot center. So once again I would like to hate al f the haters and non believers. Yes we had a good year but its just the start.
Chase rettig anyone? he is the best sophmore QB in the state of CA. playing with the big boys
all west teams out??? man well the east still has 2 more in. Charter Oak and South Hills.
actually muir also had juniors marcus graves and mitchell garner who started on defense to
Come on its commen sense John Muir Defense had only two juniors starting on defense. The two juniors were Fernando Aguilar and Chris Dunlap every one else were seniors so they should both be 1st team players for this area.
Yeah I have to agree, that Donnie Fields is a really good linemen, that kid played both ways. He's easily number one defensive linemen in the SGV. Looking at his stats on defense he has some great stats. Imagine if he didn't play both ways. And just play D-line, his stats would be beyond above average. So I choose Donnie Fields easily as a first all area on both offense and defense
have the all-league teams been officially decided / posted?
im an arcadia fan and crockom deserves 1st team qb hands down...kids a stud.golper should be TE/WR and LB.Donnie Fields OL/DL.casey picard DL.Troy Amhaz RB.Eric Willm AP.The kicker from CV is pretty bomb.Forrest Reed for punter. If longsnapping was there that would be locked up by Scott Novak...so thats my honorable mention.Lars Guierlmo C.Iono the names of the muir corners but they were studs along with their safety #22.Harrison makes it on my list for reciever because he is a stud.Little guy who plays huge. These are picks for all Pacific league because being an arcadia fan I didn't see the other leagues games.most of these guys should prob be all are as well.
P.S. sux for all the Pacific league teams getting knocked out in the playoffs.Good clean season to all teams.Good luck to the seniors where ever they go and get to work undeclassmen.
Cif and huckster have the best predictions!
I must agree with Walker at all-purpose. Although I have someone else there on my list, he did play all those positions and was vital in the victory against St. Francis. He lead his team to #1 ranking for 6 straight week before Muir topped Arcadia and an 8-2 record.
Forrest Reed-first team Punter squat-500+ leg press-1000+ need we say more...
Anon: I suppose I could have another top 10. It's really not going to change much from the last one. But if people want it, I'll do it.
A good offensive lineman was Chris Tosello #68 for La Canada. They might not have had a god season, but he sure did. He deserves a consideration at the least.
Galetti what about the final top ten rankings you gonna have a thread on that?
new york,
Nothing specific in mind, just
the whole spectrum of diet related info. Looking to optimize off-season strength and agility training.
I'am lucky to have a couple old fb buddies - one a sports med doc and one a nutritionist. They always feed me the do's and don'ts they are seeing
day to day...especially the trendy crap.
I am a staunch believer in giving the engine good fuel to run on.
Goldenarm,
What kind of supplements are you talking about?
goteamgo--
No offense taken at all--I thought it might be some gentle ribbing however. Players chosen for recognition will have to do it on their own merit and it is one of the few times that statistics will have to tell most of the story.
P -
No - it was not intended to pick on you. I felt I was very complimentary, and did a disclaimer with a sense of humor. My apologies if you thought it was directed at you.
I THINK JOHNNY ESCOBEDO FROM TC SHOULD BE IN THE LIST SOME WHERE HE IS A HARD WORKING RUNNING BACK
gpteamgo--
Hey you pickin' on me with that disclaimer of yours????
MHS Fan--
It's kind of an odd year to pick for Maranatha. Love would appear a good choice in most normal seasons but he was simply out too much of the year to get onto a first team list. Without question Vander Laan, then Love. I don't know enough to venture much further. The sophomore QB performed quite admirably and I think Sharpe could have been a pick on either special teams for his return ability or even as a RB had he had more touches or been in a different offense.
somewhere between all purpose and most val to their team....Trawick from SM
I hate not to see Williams Do being mentioned- I don't have his stat sheet at hand - but I believe he ended up around 1350 yds in limited # of games, 9 ydspc, 150+ yds per game, despite being isoed by most defensive schemes used against TC...played MLB great when he was not hampered by injury. 3 years of excellence....but likely his numbers won't land him in the mix. TC fans will never forget seeing Do at QB in the single wing!!
Either way...Will, thank you.
walker also lead his team to an 8-2 record. although they were a disappointment late in the season, he was the main catalyst in the 17-6 win vs st francis (arcadia's first time beating them in almost a decade) best of luck to walker in college.
1st team all purpose hands down should be kevan walker. look at what hes played this year
quarterback
running back
wide receiver
safety
cornerback (best in area)
kick return
punt return
todd golper troy ahmaz donnie fields should also receive awards
If Michael Pallfy of La Salle is not named as a DB on the Star News team, he should be named as the best All-Purpose player - 10 interceptions, 500 yds receiving, 76 tackles, 700 return yards, 6 TD's - the kid was a ball magnet. (DISCLAIMER - I am not related to the kid).
new york, Big A,
Talk for me has already turned to supplements and weight training...at least some preliminary looking into what may be an "improved" way to go this year, what is new etc. I like staying up to date on those things. Maybe Mr. G can throw out a column drift on that topic - when we enter the vast "desert of no pigskin". I mean the dreaded vast desert of ....nevermind, we all know that terrain.\
And, there is always the thrill (or not) of summarizing it all at the banquets. Who is the team MVP,most improved,... great photos and film and the always hilarious photo or two of a player doing something ridiculous, scratching an unreachable itch or blocking his own teammate, etc, etc.
I am bummed the prep season has passed as well(except for those unscathed in the playoff race)...but unfortunately us SGV folk are no longer part of that formula.
I enjoy roundball - but hey, nothing compares to this game.
p finchamp
Your right about Trevor, I've enjoyed watching him play the last few years. Each time we played you guys I knew Trevor would bring it and play hard. Any thoughts about who should be picked from MHS?
p finchamp
I think your right about Trevor.. He's a great kid and player.. any thoughts about our boys? Thanks
#64 Caz Wolter O Line Maranatha
That Ritenour kid O line St. Francis
Gee I'm gonna go waaay out on a limb....I like Trevor Finchamp as the All-Purpose player for which there has been a category in the past. Yes he may be the area's best kicker. He did however lead RH Prep through an undefeated league schedule as their running back and linebacker as well posting numbers at the top or near top of league in his respective positions.
Maybe next season the Pacific league coaches will agree to All-Star game rules: base 50 or 40 defense, no stunts or twists, no blitzing, free kicks, etc.
U STANGS TALKIN ABOUT HOW U SACK T BUT WHO ISNT WHEN U RUSHIN 8 TO 7 PLAYERS WHEN IT WAS 5 ON 5 WAT HAPPEN IN ARE FIRST COUPLE OF DRIVES WE WENT DOWN THE FIELD AT WILL THEN YALL STARTED SENDIN PEOPLE
It this going to be a all area team or a all pacific league team with a few blair kids..Somebody put PHS qb for P.O.Y ...
I'm sorry but I'm old school his team didn't even win there league.I don't think blair Fuller is the best back in the area but he has to be in the top 4 and his team did the best so he is Player Of The Year...
Anon (AKA Where were the coaches): I actually did a Coach of the Year poll a week ago, but it's already in the archives. I'm all ears.
WHO HAS THE BEST PREDICTIONS FOR FIRST, SECOUND TEAM. AND HONORABLE MENTIONS AND BE HONEST
H.O.P. JUST QUIT MUIR SACK T
5 TIMES
JOHN PATTON HAD 1
DARREL HANNA HAD 2
FERNANDO AGUILAR HAD 1
DEVION SAMULES HAD 1
THERE IS NO WHY YALL SHOULD HAVE 4 ALL AREA MEMBERS
REAL TALK
I THINK THE MOST CORRECT MEMBERS FOR FIRST TEAM AND SECOUND TEAM BELONG 2
HUCKSTER AND CIF
TELL ME THAT'S NOT TRUE EVERYONE
He's not going to get many looks but I would like to see Williams Do on 1st team he carries his team, and joined the 1,ooo yard TC back club. Also from Temple City Joe Reisner for his 2nd consecutive 1st team all area selection at line backer or possibly at tight end.
Great! We should get a group to go watch them. When do they play? When are the upcoming games?
Foothill Firehawks play on our homefield and are coached by one of my former HS coaches.
New York,
STAND WITH THE AVENGERS!!!!
or not...
Well, I guess overall this season has been pretty up and down. As an Arcadia fan it was a great season but I truly wish all the SGV teams did better. I guess we can always hope for the talent crop next year will be good as a whole, and not just in individuals.
It's been fun everyone. I hope football season explodes even more next year on these blogs than it did this year.
The flame of football season is never extinguished in my book. If it must be semi-pro, then semi-pro it is!
Big A,
I can't believe it's all over. Now what? Semi-pro?
I think theres only one linemen in the area who should be on both first teams. I would have to choose Arcadia's Right Tackle and Defensive End
Donnie Fields. That guy placed 3rd in tackles for his team and he was pretty much on the best rushing team that had over a thousand rushing yards which is top in their leauge. So to me thats one DL and OL spot filled
Stang4life,
I wasn't attacking you. I was just writing my opinion that with Arcadia and Muir's success in the # of sacks, it proves that the Pasadena O-line should not be given 4 all area spots. Nothing more was meant from my statement.
Ok, enough talk about PHS being a dropped catch away from the second round. That is true, but didn't they have an opportunity to kick a field goal on the previous drive? I hope that receiver is not shouldering all the guilt for this one. You take those three points and don't even need the two point conversion. They did rep the WSGV well, though.
big a- i dont care what maxpreps says the Stangs sacked crockom 6 times. and the funny thing is that if crockom wasn't good at escaping the rush that o-line would of given up a whole lot more sacks. and what about phs run game. a good o-line makes holes for its running backs and the total rush yards for the dogs sucks.
i guess that just means two more L's for the Horrible Offensive Protection in the tussle. you guys are going to get demolished the next few years. can you say rebuilding? who's gonna run the ball, pass the ball, throw the ball?
that's what i thought.
DO YALL EVEN KNOW WE HAVE 3 STARTING LINEMEN COMING BACK EVEN THOUGH TREY AND SHAT WILL BE MISSED GREATY ITS ME CHRIS AND J-JONES LEADING THE HOP NEXT YEAR I MEAN ME AND CHRIS STILL GOT TWO YEARS LEFT IF YALL THINK THAT WE WAS GOODS THIS YEAR YALL AINT SEEN NOTHING
Congatulations to The Pasadena High School Football Team. You guys could have packed it in after tough preseason schedule. However, you stood your ground and fought through much adversity. You were one game from winning league, and one pass from advancing to the CIF semi-final game. Ikner and Harrison are gamers, they performed to a high level of play every game. Bright football futures for both. Coach Mills your exemplar character made a meaningful impact on your players. Through much adversity you prepared your kids well for every game. The kids played hard for you. The kids won with grace and dignity, and showed a lot of class in defeat. Your kids kept their composure before, during, and after all games. It was evident that the kids bought into the program. The kids played with so much confidence as the season progressed. Most importantly, all your players were in excellent academic standing. Coach Mills you have something brewing on the east side. I know there are many doubters out there. Continue to focus on that championship, despite the naysayers. Great job Coach Mills. I can't wait for next season. Much love and success to Coach Mills, and the PHS Football Program.
the pasadena o line led the dogs all the way to the last drive of the second round playoff game!!!! all of those sacks were off of 8 9 man rush!!! when ever its 5 on 5 tyron doesn't get touched what was the first thing arcadia do after the game shake the line hands cuz they know h o p is awsome
HOP IS THE BEST O-LINE STANGS DIDNT DO NOTHIN
After all this talk about the Pasadena O-line.
According to maxpreps,
The Pasadena O-line gave up 8 sacks to Arcadia. They gave up 5 sacks to John Muir as well.
So my conclusion is...Pasadena's O-line should not have 4 all-area linemen.
Those were the sacks from the Arcadia game:
Golper - 3
Vonshert - 1
Picard - 1
Fields - 1
Cipolla - 1
Alcalde - 1
Goldenarm, just wondering...
You ususally have a pretty good idea of how TCs doing during the week and how they'll perform Friday. You also tend to have a lot of pretty insisde stuff. You've said in the past that you would be on the sideline Friday night, is why I asked about being a coach.
I follow TC football as close as I can, but don't seem to know half as much as you do. Keep it coming!
Just thought I'd like to know who it was that had all the info fans like myself would like to know... My name is Jeff, a parent of a former TC player.
H.O.P is the best o line phs has seen in quite a few years! tyron was 10th in california in passing come on now! 4 the first team all league it should say H.O.P. all the way
LT:TREY W
RT:SHANT M
C:J.JONES
RG:BOYKINS
RT:CHRIS C
everybody can talk but can't nobody get by the h.o.p
h.o.p.- you are right we did get full off of your horrible line. we ate and ate and ate and ate. and when we were full we ate some more, that o-line was terrible. next year we'll pace ourselves a little better and just get 4 or 5 sacks. does h.o.p. stand for horrible offensive production? and u may have won one little playoff game but you have never ever ever ever beat the Stangs in football. and u never will. stangs or nothing.
Scott, you have not asked for comments on coach of the year yet, but I sure hope you explain what happened in that last Blair game to clear the air. Having a game canceled prior to its conclusion represents one of the worst CIF infractions and is not something that should be associated with the coach of the year.
Hey stank for life your musty-stangs ate so much of the H.O.P. that they were to full to get past the first round in the playoff.
Sfhs92,
is that for 1st team or just a complete mix.
Riley should be a 1st-teamer IMO. As should one of the linemen (if #77 is either of those kids that you listed).
The Players from SF who should be on the team are
AP/OLB Dietrich Riley
OL Dan Scheper
OL Alex Ritenour
DB Kevin Garcia
DE Tommy Tartaglione
FB Evan King
LB Anthony Lombardo
h.o.p.- if the o-line from H.S. makes the all-area team than all of muir's d-line should make it too. we did sack T-crock like 6 times and held that whole offense in check. how many rush yards did H.S. have? how many pass yards did H.S. have? thank you. that's why the d-line didn't need dinner that night, they were full from eating all those pancakes.
Arcadia:
AP:Kevan Walker
LB/TE:Todd golper
OL/DL:Donnie Fields
RB:Troy amhaz
WR/DB:Eric Willm
This is to all of you that put in your thought about the first team all laegue, So think about this,How in the H... can Tyron Crockom lead the the intier San Gabriel Valley in passing yard and not one of his O-line is evan thought of.Once agane way to go H.O.P. Trey W, Shant M, Jay Jones, Anthony B, and Christopher C. I thank all of you for a great season. Bulldogs for LIFE.
Anon 1218
You can stop asking, I sit in the stands, not stand on the sideline. In other words, no I am not a coach
Why is that so important for yet another Anonymous to know?
Time for change:
Manny tries to be in charge, which tells you everything you need to know. How else can you explain practicing 4 hours during Week 10 and into the playoffs? What do they need to work on for 4 hours that late in the season? Shouldn't everything be perfected by that point of the season? Or do they wait around hoping the starters will actually show up to practice?
The biggest sham was the whole Ruedeflores countdown to 100 wins. Check the Alhambra archives...he's not even there yet! He's really at 98 or 99 right now. Of course, counting is not exactly a strong suit of the football program, considering they can't figure out what a 2.0 GPA is.
Gil will return because his grand-god-whatever he is-son won't be played at QB by the next coach, nor will they keep Manny on staff. Unfortunately, Gil is going to die on a football field unless the administration has the guts to tell him to stay away. You'd think it wouldn't be that difficult to do with a .500 coach whose program is overrun with rules violations, academic ineligibility and underachieving. That's what having an AD who idolizes you can do for you.

I agree. I have never seen more chaos amongst a coaching staff. Who's in charge? Alhambra was healthy for the Schurr and La Serna games, maybe the offensive coordinator was injured. Find anyone who knows how to work with a kicker and a QB coach and the Moors are still playing.
David Vander Laan #54 was listed last year as a SR but was a JR. So he should be on the list again this year. The kid plays very tough ball and is a great person off and on the field.

David VanderLaan #54 Plays OL/DL Played last night with ankle sprain. Tom Flewelling #22 plays like he's 250. And Caz Wolters #64 for OL the kid has a big heart and is tough.
Despite their league showing I would expect a couple of Bosco Tech players (especially Ryan Diaz, Richard Gonzalez, and Joey Vicuna) to get a look at possible second team spots... at the very least honorable mentions.

I'll cast my vote for a couple of SoPas kids - QB Jonathan Troast and LB David Allen.
Troast led the Rio Hondo in passing (1700 yards, 12 TDs) and led all area QBs in league stats, except for Crockham from Pasadena. He threw for 1100+ yards in league play including two 300+ yard games, one of them against Blair. He was also fifth in CA in punting.
David Allen led the Rio Hondo in tackles with 145 after being second to Josh Parish last year. He was also third in league in scoring, as he played fullback and tight end as well as linebacker.
Both are expected to be playing on Saturdays next year.
I'll post this year's team as soon as it comes out CIF. That's what this post is about. getting feedback for this year.
And Stang Fan, this is the format I'm going to use. Choosing positions is great, but I'm not picking 11 guys from a team, so they can be any position.
Caz Wolter #64 left guard / center at Maranatha. At 6'1" - 240 lb. he may be a little small for O/L, but plays his position with a linebacker mentality that turns every block into a hit.
From MHS David Vander Laan OL/DL and Tom Flewelling Line backer

Scott,
Will you be doing the honorable mention portion the same way Fred did? I know some may disagree with me, but I think that the postitions should all have honorable mentions as opposed to just naming off a couple of players from each school. If it is done that way to provide every school an opportunity to be on the list then all schools should get a set number of players (3 or 4) instead of some schools getting 2 players (Gabrielino and Keppel) and some getting 6 or 7 players(TC and Pasadena Poly.)
O-cat, New York
Glad to see the Cats were in the game - and I would have been a happy dude to see you pull it out. Don't hang your heads - you guys should be a power to reckon with next year. TC and the rest of the RHL need to establish residency in the weight room and practice field to even hang close. Congrats on a solid year.
We got bulldozed by the best football team the Rams have faced this year. I got alot to say, but will wait a day or two to say it.
We got hurt early by two things that us hurt all year, the deep pass over the middle and the sweep/toss. After that, it was see yah! It really was not a case of the Rams playing horible..more a highlight film of a consistent and highly efficient football team team...stacked with experienced, well directed players. More later.
Manny Ruedeflores at Alhambra will insist on having at least 10 players on the All-Area team and 15 or so on the All Almont League team despite Alhambra finishing 3rd. At Alhambra, they don't believe in how the games actually turned out, just how they think they should have turned out. They also believe no other school ever has injuries and that it is always just pure bad luck that causes them to puke away games.
