Central Division
Locals in it: Muir, Pasadena, Arcadia.
Galetti's two cents: Either one of these teams is talented enough to make a nice run. Moreno Valley and Colony will be tough nuts to crack, however.
Last week's rankings: 1. Moreno Valley, 2. Colony, 3. Chaffey, 4. Colton, 5. Muir, 6. Rancho Verde, 7. Arcadia, 8. Pasadena, 9. Paloma Valley, 10. West Valley.

East Valley Division
Locals in it: RIo Hondo Prep, Flintridge Prep.
Galetti's two cents: In a division with much larger schools, the postseason run could be a short one for the locals.
Last week's rankings: 1. Citrus Hill, 2. San Jacinto, 3. Ontario Christian, 4. Riverside Notre Dame, 5. Desrt, 6. Big Bear, 7. Twentynine Palms, 8. Chadwick, 9. Bishop Union, 10. Aquinas.
Others: Flintridge Prep, Frazier Mountain, Rio Hondo Prep, Desert Hot Springs.

Mid-Valley Division
Locals in it: Blair, Monrovia, Temple City, La Salle.
Galetti's two cents: Anything goes in this division. Blair could go a long way, as could La Salle. Duarte could stand in the way for the title.
Last week's rankings: 1. Paraclete (9-0), 2. Santa Clara (6-1-1), 3. Blair (7-1), 4. Cantwell Sacred Heart (7-2), 5. Bishop Diego (7-2), 6. La Puente (6-3), 7. Duarte (7-2), 8. Temple City (4-5), 9. Cerritos Valley Christian 5-5), 10. La Salle (4-5).

Northeast Division
Locals in it:Maranatha.
Galetti's two cents: Maranatha has improved immensely after losing its two star quarterbacks and playing without running back Mark Love. Danny Beckwith is going to be a good QB for the Minutemen. Having said that, I don't see anyone knocking St. Margaret's off the mountain top.
Last week's rankings: 1. St. Margaret’s, 2. Saddleback Valley Christian, 3. Brentwood, 4. Bellarmine-Jefferson, 5. Murrieta Calvary Chapel, 6. Sage Hill, 7. Fairmont Prep, 8. Mammoth, 9. Maranatha, 10. Whittier Christian.

Southeast Division
Locals in it: San Gabriel, Alhambra, Rosemead
Galetti's two cents: La Habra is the toast of the league this season. But this seems to be a division where anything can happen. Which San Gabriel and Rosemead teams show up could be the difference between moving on and going home. Rosemead has been full of surprises all season so I wouldn't be shocked if the Panthers went far.
Last week's rankings: 1. La Habra (8-0), 2. California (9-0), 3. Troy (6-2), 4. Alhambra (7-2), 5. La Serna (7-2), 6. San Gabriel (7-2), 7. Westminster (6-3), 8. Rosemead (6-3), 9. Schurr (5-4), 10. Fullerton (4-4).

SERIOULY I CAN BET THERE IS MANY FIRST TEAMERS ON MUIR TEAM. I'M JUST SAYING EVERY GAME I WENT TO I WAS IMPERESSED WITH THE D.LINE FOR MUIR I WANT TO KNOW DID #'s (51)(52)(44)(72) ALL MAKE FIRST TEAM OR SECOUND TEAM. I ALSO KNOW THAT #23 FOR MUIR HAD TO MAKE IT FOR QB. LETS NOT FORGET #33, #22, #3, #2 AND , #12. THEY ALL HAD TO MAKE FIRST OR SECOUND TEAM. NOW FOR PASADENA HIGH THEY HAVE A COUPLE OF GUYS RIGHT? #'s 3,2,4,22 THEY HAD TO MAKE FIRST OR SECOUND TEAM. Acardia has a couple of guys as well in # 18 #22 and # 2 over all pacific league looks very tough and good can wait until someone answer my question if all the D.Linemen for Muir made first team or at least secound.

Goldenarm said:

were it not for Tip and his crew turning around Blair - this conversation would not be close to happening. I live in Pasadena and heard for 4 years the block kids ragging on how they would never go to Blair.

As far as transfers,
I look at the upcoming TC talent pool and see grit, gut and toughness but no one requiring the 40 stopwatch get recalibrated. Like NY said, somebody dangling the car keys somewhere??? I could spring for a Pastrami from the Hat, other than that maybe the Inland Empire foreclosure epidemic will send a headliner our way. Yeah right. It is back to banking on fundamentals.

The Stang Fan said:

Ex-Falcon:

I can see how some kids might want to go to Blair in order to get a shot at an "easier" ring. However, in Pasadena there it is often viewed by many in the city that if a kid transfers from Muir or decides to go to another one of the four public high schools, that the kid is steering away from true competition. I'm not saying that that is right or even true but that assumption is most definitely made. You don't know how many times I have overheard kids in the parks talking to friends or others and explaining why they transferred from Muir or didn't go to Muir and nine times out of ten the people respond by saying, "Oh, so you're scared of the competition huh?"

So, no, I don't think that you will see an exodus of players leaving Muir or HS (don't forget Blair doesn't get to play in the grandaddy of 'em all either) to go to Blair because the really good football players are ready and willing to compete at the traditional schools.

And BTW.........that blue and gold looks waaaaaaay better than green and gold.

The Stang Fan said:

NY:

Touche......That is funny as hell though!!!

G-arm:

The freshman #62 Danny Huerta is undoubtedly holding his own. His ability to pinch down and climb to the next level is what impresses me most, considering he's only 14 and probably hasn't played in pop warner because he was too big. THe kid deserves to get at least an honorable mention if not 2nd team on the all-league team. If you watch Muir they like to run a lot behind both he and #77 (not quite sure of his name.) It'll be fun to see how he does in the upcoming playoffs.

Goldenarm said:

I got a gut laugh on that one, thanks NY.

New York said:

I bet as soon as he turns 16 he will get a full scholarship and a new car to drive to Alemany.

Goldenarm said:

How is that standout freshman lineman on Varsity doing at Muir?

New York said:

Meant to throw LB Poly in there as well.

New York said:

Well-said, Goldenarm. Unless you are from Paso Robles, Mission Viejo, 1980's Fontana etc, putting together an offensive line requires leadership and coaching more than relying on a genetic pool. Strong lines can turn a good DB into a great tailback.

Obsevantcat said:

Stangfan:

You forgot one! God went to Muir, His Son Jesus went to St.Francis...LOL

Goldenarm said:

There has never been much glory in the "beef" department. If you don't have big corn-fed size dudes, you need a coach or staff or system who can motivate and "groom" a group of interior line from freshman entry level. TC is damn good at this.

I think Blair this season is a good example of how important and how quickly changes in the attitude and approach of line play can make a difference. Of course, Blair's down line is getting no PR - but they are putting that team in a position to win every Friday. When all league selections come - several of Blair's front should be considered.

That has been a missing element through the years for Muir football. Like the old commercial said, "Where's the Beef?"
They always have a few big guys, but generally are not able to string giant lines together year in and year out.

If they could add that to their already potent offense, Muir would be VERY tough to beat.

Hal Lamaster said:

Thanks,
If he is half the athlete his dad was, the Mustangs lost a good one.

The Stang Fan said:

Hal:

Yeah, actually Malcolm is Darnell's son.

Hal Lamaster said:

The Stang Fan,
Do you know if the Marable kid is related to either Donald or Darnell Marable. Darnell was a basketball STUD for the Mustangs in the mid '70s.

The running back who did so well for Arcadia a few years back (Bailey) was supposed to go to Muir, I believe.

The Stang Fan said:

Speaking of players who have "slipped away" from the Stangs:

Kanaan Snowden- Starting TB at Charter Oak (Sr.)

Mikey Harrell- Starting WR at Charter Oak (Sr.)

Chris Harris- Starting TB at Duarte (Sr.)

Tashad Johnson- Starting TB at Colony (Sr.)

Malcolm Marable- Starting TB at Alemany (So.)

Both Kevan Walker (Sr.) and Dietrich Riley's (So.) fathers also attended Muir and would have been AWESOME additions if they had followed in their fathers' footsteps.

It sure is fun to dream sometimes. In the end though, and in this era, maybe it's all for the best that the players are at their respective schools.....talk about FIERCE competition at the skill spots though. College recruiters would probably have their own office on campus. It'd be nice if we could get some hogs to match the sort of potential that we have on the skills side.

The Stang Fan said:

Is Kmari English's dad named William? If so, it's good to see the son of an ol' school Stang playing well. Come on now Will, you know where you should've brought your boy!!! Lol! Anyhow, it's good to see him doing well and I wish both Cantwell and MHS the best this upcoming Friday.

To add to the prior coment - It was also funny to hear Cantwell chanting "WHOSE HOUSE? OUR HOUSE!!!!" on Lancer field. Yes it was good to see them retreat back to their bus as the second place team.

Will La Salle win the Mid-Valley? It is wide open - they have as good a shot as anyone else.

Good luck to all the local teams in the playoffs!!!!

Lancer4Life said:

It was funny- Cantwell came to La Salle on Friday night, and, as a team, started stomping on the "LS" at the middle of the field and talking smack to the Lancers. It was great seeing them get back on their bus with their tails between their legs after they got their a$$es kicked.

La Salle wins the mid-valley, no problem.

Yes, I was at the game as well. I never said the players didn’t have heart but it makes the game much easier when you know exactly how the other team will adjust to sets and formations as well as knowing all their automatics. Ask your nephew what the “No Carne Asada tonight” banner was all about.

We’re in a down year by SF standards but our team has shown signs of being a contender so it depends on which SF team shows up. Should be an interesting match up.

FYI – the posters name is below the posting.

If you were at the game like I was because my nephew was playing (#10)you would have understoodd my comments. Santa Fe got beat physically and mentally beaten. The game was over when early in the first half my nephew #10 caught a pass accross the middle and took a hit from your main main "Nate". Needless to say he jumped up and brushed off the hit like nothing, it was also a first down and that set the tone for the rest of the game...We took your hits and we hit back even harder. I'm not saying we're the best team in the league, I'm just saying don't count us out!

SG is all HEART!!! Lead by their QB #3

Stang Fan,
You and I think alike with wanting to measure against out of area teams. Local matchups would be great, though, if they included the entire SGV like you suggested. By the way, if Muir played Sierra Vista the Stangs would need to keep score on both sides of the scoreboard. I would be very interested to games such as Muir vs. Charter Oak, Arcadia vs. South Hills, Monrovia vs. Los Altos, PHS vs. West Covina, etc year in and year out.

Common Sense:

As a competitor I would not like to see a WSGV CIF division. An entire SGV division yes, but not a WSGV division. Rings need to be fought for and earned, and honestly there are some teams in the WSGV who would not be "earning" a ring by playing only WSGV schools. You have got to throw schools like SOuth Hills, Los Altos, Glendora, Charter Oak, Damien, etc. in the mix. That would make it a worthy ring, let's just be honest here.

BTW, I kind of like measuring up to schools outside of the area, just to see how we measure up. But that's just me I guess.

New York said:

Getting a "tough" draw is a little meaningless. If you aim to win it all, then eventually you will have to knock off a higher ranked team. Only the eventual champion goes home victorious anyway.

New York said:

Stang-Fan -what-are-you-talking-about?? HAHAHA. What a complete clown that guy is! I can't believe extent some people are going to bring respect to their team.

Anonymous said:

I, too like Common Sense's proposed layout. It would take some Athletic Directors actually arguing for a setup instead of being passive at CIF meetings.
I am not sure I understand the seedings for the Central Division. Muir as Pac League #1 plays San Andreas League #3, which has a 9.5 rating.#2 Pacific League Arcadia plays Inland Valley League #2 Rancho Verde which has a 33.5 rating. Pasadena #3 Pacific League plays #2 Mt Baldy League Chaffey which has a 15.5 rating. #4 Burroughs playsMt Baldy #1 Colony with a 23.4 rating. CIF rankings and Calpreps ratings are inconsistent. Chaffey is #3 in CIF Central division but has a Calpreps power rating of only 15.5. Rancho Verde has a CIF ranking of # 6 but has a potent Calpreps power rating of 33.5, which is the highest of any team in the Central Division, including #1 ranked Moreno Valley , which has a power rating of 23.9. If the power ratings are anything close to accurate , Arcadia really got screwed and would have been better off finishing 4th in the Pacific League and getting Burroughs's draw.

Is there any rhyme or reason for this ,Scott G?

All the more reason to have a W. San Gabriel Valley Division

Throw the Almont, Rio Hondo, Montview, Pacific and Mission Valley into the same division. Take the 4th playoff team away from the Montview or kick Burroughs and Burbank from the Pacific and you’ll have 16 teams.

Imagine the potential matchups:

SEM vs. TC
San Gabriel vs. Pasadena
Arroyo vs. Alhambra
Duarte vs. Arcadia
Monrovia vs. Rosemead
Muir vs. Sierra Vista
Schurr vs. La Puente
Azusa vs. Blair

Or Blair vs. Pasadena, Or Alhambra vs. Blair, Or Arcadia vs. Rosemead or Monrovia...Can you imagine the amount of local interest (and revenue for the CIF) this would generate?

Goldenarm said:

For those of you already burying Monrovia - you may want to put down the shovel and note their efficiencies last week. Sure, you can argue weaknesses in the TC defense. But, the Wildcats had focus on both sides of the ball, serious focus that is.

miketev said:

You're right. That Rancho Verde team is pretty impressive. Kids with D1 offers at the skill positions and the #1 lineman in the country. I have a friend from college who coaches at Yucaipa who they soundly beat this ear. He thinks they'd have gone undefeated without a few injuries to those skill players.

Unfortunately, from what I've heard they're back to full strength. I haven't seen the Apaches play since the PHS game - but PHS' speed definitely took advantage of the Arcadia secondary. Lets hope they can learn and improve from that game.

Arcadia - you'll just have to sack up and do what you can. You'd have had to play them at some point anyway if your ultimate goal was to win the thing. This is your championship game. You've got a lot of seniors who could be playing their last game. Leave it all out on the field.

The same advice goes for all the local teams. Forget where you're at in the Pasadena Star-News rankings. Its now time for everyone to support each other and show that SGV football is for real.

Good luck and good health to everyone playing this week!

Being a prep football fan I was happy to see Cantwell get stuck with another lose Friday night to a team that has much more hart and pride. To say Cantwell is a better team is crazy. All one has to do is look at their schedules. While Cantwell played one public school in pre season, a 1-9 team, and racked up an impressive pre season record against what I would call a fairly soft schedule, La Salle played a much tougher schedule against the local public schools. And all but one is in the play offs! In the end La Salle did not have a great pre season but it got them ready for what counts, league play! Being present at the game Fiday night I saw a group of boys from La Salle that had heart and pride. In Cantwell I saw a team, along with their fans, that were over confidant and thought they could bully a team into submission. You have to remember thugs and poor sports don't always win. Good luck to all the local teams Friday night.

To add to the previous post (not this anonymous person)- the pre-game dance was tauting, and the calls by the refs were not questionable - they were obvious to everyone in the stands. Calls for personal fouls and unsportsmanlike conduct show a lack of discipline. The chanting during the pre-game prayer was uncalled for, and the refusal of some Cantwell players to participate in the post-game handshake was a total lack of class.

Enjoy your runner-up T-shirts.

cantwell was simply outcoached by la salle...the defense held there ground and shut out cantwell in the second half, not allowing any big runs by English or the other backs. to say that cantwell out hit la salle is nonsense. cantwell showed little class from the players wanting to fight several la salle players after the game, to the coaching staff and up to the fans!!!

all that said...La Salle is once again league CHAMPS!!!

Scott G and other Prep League folk--

I think Prep League was down slightly overall this year. Flintridge and Viewpoint were better than last season but Poly was way off, Chadwick was as expected and Webb was typical.

As good as Prep League has shown historically Division XII and East Valley Division is quite a step up. RH Prep is accustomed to always playing schools with 4 to 5 times the enrollment but when the playoffs come around the competition gets into the 10x to 12x category so odds don't favor Prep schools of any size really. Still everyone loves the underdog over-achiever and once again RH Prep is cast in their role.

It doesn't look good, Ontario Christian beat Calvary Chapel Murietta who easily handled Rio Hondo earlier this year.

Also, Big Bear may be a #3 seed but they beat Aquinas easily this year and Aquinas beat Ontario Christian.

It is clear the pollsters felt the prep league was the weakest leage in the dividsion.

Big Red Machine said:

Cantwell did not, as you say, "deserve to lose the game" vs La Salle. Cantwell came out aggressive and played smash-mouth football. I will agree the chanting during the prayer was wrong but as soon as the coaching staff and players realized that, the player's shut up (the speakers were facing the stands therefore the players could not hear the prayer). I think the refs took offense to the pre-game dance, chant and hard hits Cantwell was laying on the La Salle kids and tried to control the game. They called numerous questionable calls against Cantwell causing Cantwell to become soft. It was obvious Cantwell was bigger, stronger, faster and should have won the game. As for the La Salle fans, this is football it's not golf or Cross Country. I'm sorry Cantwell hit your little boys harder than they are used to being hit and I'm sorry your star quarterback was running for his life. People get loud at football games and if the refs had not have been so one sided you would not have had to listen to the Cantwell fans express their frustration.

As far as Muir is concerned, they are in a TOUGH bracket. The team that was ranked #1 at the end of the year wasn't even one of the top four seeds in the division. Huh? Of course that's who we will see if or when we get past Cajon (who we can't sleep on at all.) If or when we get past Mo Valley we must face last year's nemesis and eventual champ Colony.

I like our team much more than last year's team, and I believe we've got a shot at the semis. If we stay injury-free I believe that our deep playoff games will be quite competitive, but I can't sit here and say we will DEFINITELY beat all of these teams in four consecutive weeks. It can be done, no doubt, but it will be a an ardous task to say the least.

But, let me tell you one thing..........Colony BETTER bring their "A" game too. Don't act like it's just Muir who has to show up and play their best game too, buddy. I'll tell you another thing, last year's Colony team was GOOD, and this year's Colony team is NOT last year's Colony team. And last year's Stangs were a decent team, but this year's Stangs are MUCH better. So you can best believe that at the end of the day, when it is all said and done, BOTH teams better bring the best of WHATEVER they got.

BTW, Arroyo Valley aint no punks either, you better not overlook them before a possible semis showdown with the Stangs.

I'm sure it comes off like I'm trying to purposefully demean any team who wins that division, that's not my intent whatsoever, I'm just saying that our local WSGV teams in the Mid-Valley have the best shot at a ring because that division is just so weak.

La Salle – After a dismal start they go 5 and 0 in league with a 1st place finish in the Camino Real league.
Rio Hondo – Congratulations P. Finchamp. An overall 5 and 4 record but when it counts you go undefeated in Prep League.
Flintridge Prep – An impressive 7 and 2 overall record and 4 and 1 in Prep league and 2nd place.
And my beloved Maranatha Minutemen. After a tough start and devastating injuries early in the season you guys put it together and go 4 and 1 with a 2nd place finish in the Alpha league

Good luck to all the local schools going into playoffs.

I don't know how far the Kares will go in the playoffs but their preseason got them a dosage of what to anticipate. Lest anyone out there forget, it's not how you start but how you finish. With a 5-0 league finish I like RHP's chances in the playoffs much more than many of the other likely pairings to come out tomorrow.

What kills me is how from year to year if Monrovia makes the playoffs somehow all of the teams that we play aren't worth the ink. Two years ago we had 5thRanked Crespi on the ropes with Sparks at running back, Crespi went on to take the division, My point is every team is individual and if you put a good team in Div.10 they could beat a good team in Div.1 or 2..take example Monrovia Beat Diamond Bar Div. 2 CIF champs and lost in our Div. finals to Paso Robles who I think was just as much a powerhouse in Northern California than 95% of the OC or IE schools. The key difference is that if you are healthy and your momentum is flowing in full gear, you can beat anyone on any given night. There is no such thing as a loser or sorry div. because if thats the case I guess when Oaks Christian went from Div. 12 to Div.1 they were supposed to be the doormat to those teams?....Get a few good players who want to win and you have yourself a great game. As far as the SGV is concerned there is no Great team as of yet to really represent the area. After the playoffs We can continue this conversation. These comments aren't to put any team down, because every team has a chance to prove themselves worthy of the comments that are made on these blogs, but the bottom line is what do you really call better?......This might sound a little biased but when you compare the talent between the Schools like (Muir, Blair, PHS, Monrovia, Duarte.) You can almost close your eyes and pick a team, who ever comes out that night on all cylinders could beat half 75% of the teams in the OC or the IE. Sometimes I think that the Fans in the WSGV are their own worst critics. I think that If PHS had a running back like Chris Harris they would be 10-0 Muir likewise, Or Devin Fuller, these guys are quality backs and you are'nt going to find them in the Pacific league. So this thing about div. formats...it wasn't the fans choice.
