LA CANADA - It was the epitome of a grudge match on the football field when St. Francis High School hosted St. Paul on Friday night at Friedman Field.
The stakes were plain and simple: For the winner, a tie for the Mission League championship and a trip to the CIF-Southern Section playoffs. For the loser, a long offseason in which to mull over what might have been.
St. Francis will be thinking about the season that could've been for quite some time.
In a season filled with close calls and heart-breaking losses, the Golden Knights again had a victory seemingly in their grasp, only to have it ripped away in the end.
The Golden Knights' season ended in the blink of an eye. St. Paul senior running back Aubrey Haynes scored on a 59-yard touchdown run with 5:40 to play in the fourth quarter to give the Swordsmen a dramatic come-from-behind 7-3 victory over St. Francis.
St. Paul (6-4, 2-1) will await Sunday's pairings to find out who they will play in the opening round of the playoffs.
The Golden Knights finished the 2007 season at 4-6 overall, 1-2 in league.
In a game in which yardage was a precious commodity, the Swordsmen outgained St. Francis 160-122 in total yardage.
"It was a big game, and we were playing a little tight, and the defense did an outstanding job," St. Francis coach Jim Bonds said. "Our defense played well and we thought we might win that game 3-0."
Haynes had the bulk of the yardage for St. Francis, rushing 15 times for 97 yards and a touchdown.
Junior quarterback Justin Sciarra was 7-of-9 passing for 66 yards and had 24 yards on 13 carries to lead St. Francis.
After a lethargic first half, both teams found an offensive rhythm in the second half.
St. Francis used a 38-yard pass play from Justin Sciarra to Sean McGuinness to drive to the St. Paul 13-yard line before having to settle for a 30-yard field goal by McGuinness with 4:53 to play to get on the board first.
But the game and the season slipped away for the Golden Knights in the fourth quarter.
They had a fourth-and-3 at the Swordsmen 27 with just more than three minutes to play, when Sciarra inadvertently bumped into running back Kyle Morgan.
Sciarra lost control of the ball, chased it down and tossed a pass to Matt Vidales, who was stopped a yard short of the first down.
"Justin did a heck of a job picking it up and staying alive and then finding Vidales in the flat and it came up a yard short," Bonds said. The game has a defensive feel right from the opening kickoff. St. Paul managed 57 yards of offense in the first half to 28 for the Golden Knights.
The Golden Knights once again were without the services of starting quarterback Austin Heyworth. The senior, who is being heavily recruited by Harvard University next season, suffered a torn ligament in his knee against Notre Dame on Oct. 12.
He attempted a comeback the following week against Loyola, but it was short-lived.

Way to focus and straight to your point, i love it. Keep up the work people. Dont let anyone stop us bloggers.
You make blogging look like a walk in the park! I've been trying to blog daily but I just cant find writing material.. you're an inspiration to me and i'm sure many others!
Hi! Sorry that i am asking here - what cms is this? Wordpress, Movabletype? Can't find info anywhere.
Thanks much for the great document. I am glad I've taken the time to learn this.

Thanks for the info. It seems to be up for discussion these days.
Take it easy on the Alverno boys. They have to get ready for softball season.
Uh..you're right, and no...public school.
Uh..first things first..the correct spelling is accepted.
SF grad?
Ohhhhh!! pleeeeease!!!!! First things first. In order to attend a university you must first get accepeted so that you can go there (kind of goes hand and hand). Knowing these kids, (who are high achievers) and their parents, (who have alot invested) most will make it for all four years. Don't sell SF short!!
JC educations are more valuable than people think. Getting into schools like UCLA and Cal right out of undergad are nearly impossible these days. Success in junior college is must easier to come by than scoring the required near perfect on your SAT to get into those schools.
I personally didn't go this route and ended up paying for 4 years of private school with less academic prestige and with fewer networking opportunities because I was - 1) partly unaware of the transfer rate from a PCC to a UCLA and 2) because people trashed a JC education.
No regrets for me as I'm doing well right out of college but going to a JC isn't a bad option and might even be better option for some in the long run.
Attending and accepted are apples and oranges. The best measure of a high school is what those kids accomplish during and after their freshman year of college.
Alot of kids get accepted, show up (sometimes), hang out and disappear.
Check out some statistics and you might be surprised how Ganesha HS rates in comparison to SF. That will open up some eyes.
To the person that made the comment about SF having more students going to Glendale JC....get your facts straight. First of all, students testing for SF do not even take the ISEE. All the local catholic high schools require you take the HSPT. There are other private schools in the area that only have the testing done with ISEE. Second, SF does have a special program that takes a small number of educationally challenged students, giving them the opportunity to attend SF. That may contribute to a small percentage of low test scores. Finally, according to published reports from SF, 99% of the class of 2007 is attending college. 91% were accepted to four-year schools. And for just a bit of trivia, out of the class of 2006, 23 students out of a graduating class of 160ish went on to USC. Not bad. Not bad at all!!
They go to GCC because of Coach Shep. He tells them that they will play ball but when they get there most are overlooked. He is a young coach that is on their level and they trust him too much instead taking a chance at a four year university.
New York you don't spend all the money to go to SF and then go to a JC . Sorry.
Nothing wrong with going to a JC either. And when you go from a JC to a 4 year and you do well at the 4 year, your potential employer does not ask you if you went to a JC so it is a good altenative. Just might as well go to a public school and save the money if you are going to go that route.
I can't stand when people put-down a JC education (hopefully the JC is a stepping stone), but California offers people a tremendous chance to become college educated and a JC is sometimes the most financially feasible starting point. I bet more people would begin their college education earlier (at a JC) if others would be more supportive and less detrimental.
SF should start giving free rides ( the talent is very weak) or koin the pacific league and finish in the middle of that league.
Morgan or Riley in at crunch time - that is easy Riley.
SF send more kids to Glendale College than any other private school in the area - great education - LOL. Give me a break - SF takes kids who parents can pay - they have numerous kids who got 1s and 2s (extremely low) on their ISEE tests.
SF recruits athletes, but they just don't give them a free ride like alot of others do. I have no problem with the schools doing that, but the CIF should acknowledge it, accept it and use that knowledge in creating it's divisions for all sports.
SF, as well as all private schools, recruit. That is how they keep their doors open. When it comes to recruiting for athletics, that is where SF differs from most. They don't. Sure, there are student athletes that come to look at the school, and the coaches would love to have them, but they have to meet SF's academic and financial requirements ( there is financial aid available to help with a portion of the tuition, but you still have to qualify and be responsible for some of the tuition). There are no free rides. Last year there was a freshman football player that smoked every kid on that freshman team, including Riley. I stood there at practice with his father and watched him. His father wanted a full ride for him, and SF refused. This same player now plays for one of the mission league schools who was willing to give him a full ride. We also have a personal friend who's son is one of the top players in his sport throughout the entire LA county. They interviewed at SF, even met the coach (who wanted him), Loyola really wanted him, not to mention alot of the other local schools. He was an excellent student, and even though SF was one of his top choices, he did not get accepted. As far as students leaving because of a lack luster football program, I seriously doubt that. These kids are here for an education, and sports are secondary. There are plenty of public schools that far exceed SF in sports, and they are free. SF is a college prepatory school first and foremost. It always has been, and will continue to be. As a parent, I feel the commitment of the staff, and the nurturing enviroment they provide our sons is what keeps us here, not their sports. And I am as competitive as the next guy. Most parents at SF realize that the way to open most doors at a good college is through a SF diploma, not sports. Case in point...Heyworth is being looked at by Harvard, and they are very interested in him. And you can bet that education is number one on their list.
whoever made that last comment about this year SF team being individuals is an absolute idiot and should be shit. I realize that there is no excuse for the poor play this year and that there are too many excuses being made. However, this year's SF defense was probably one of the best ever. The offense struggled all year with injuries and couldn't find an identity. That was the problem, not that they were individuals. DO NOT make a negative comment about the character of this years Golden Knights because they had a disappointing season. This team had more fight than anybody could ask. I know that the graduating class will learn from their shortcoming this year. If you don't have something good to say about them after the season is over shut your mouth. Good luck to the graduating Golden Knights on their future and for the rest, next years season.
a coach cannot coach a team the is uncoachable. I have been attending games at st. francis for the last 15 years. every team before this one had something that this team lacked. this team was a team made up of individuals. the majority of players had an agenda all of their own. Instead team effort they all wanted the be the "big star" in the spotlight. There is no "I" in team, but there is one in winning and they didn't apply the knowledge that st. francis is known for in the classroom.
Whom do SF fans believe should take over for Bonds if he's "so terrible?"
yeah u better stay anonymous. there is no talent on the st. francis roster???? you must be a moron!!! Heyworth, Garcia, Morgan, and the defensive line have tremendous talent. The thing is u would never know because Bonds didnt use his senior playmakers effectively at all. It was the Riley show the whole year, and look where that got us. thats what hurt us in the end. Fourth and four, the biggest play of the year... and Morgan and Garcia were on the sideline, wow!!! way to go bonds!!!! The worst play calling i've seen in any level of football in a long time.
Riley is not the only talented kid at SF. There is a kid that is Rileys friend from the pasadena pop warner team who played JV this year who is very talented his name is Perkins, but I believe his family is moving back to the south after this semester is over. Also this years JV team went undefeated in the Mission league so we will definatly be waiting for next year. Oh and for the record Stang Fan alemany has always been SF's bit** kinda like hs is muirs.
unless your name is mrs riley, there is no talent worthy of a scholarship on the st francis roster.
Probably recruits less than some of the public schools on the other side of the valley.
SFHS may do some recruiting, but it definitely is not much, nor enough compared to others in their Division. My son is one of the "top" players and we can't get a dime! We tried. We struggle to pay tuition because we want a good education for our son. Students leave SF because they have trouble with the academics (it is a VERY hard curriculm and they don't care that you are a athlete) or financial trouble. There's no free ride here!!!
SF does recruit, on a very minimal level though compared to most private schools. As a matter of fact it's not even close, but they do recruit. In terms of recruiting it doesn't even matter what city they are from, especially considering Pasadena kids who live minutes from the campus.
As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, SF has had a roller coaster of a season with an extremely difficult schedule. I predicted early on that they would miss the playoffs and the truth is they will miss the next few too, even with Dietrich. Chaminade and St. Paul are seemingly better teams year in and year out and Alemany will now be the class of the league. I was surprised that SF beat them (even w/o their best player who was suspended for being late to films), they showed character and heart in that victory. But don't expect it to happen during the upcoming seasons. Alemany is about to take over the Mission. Talk about recruiting, go up and down their FR/JV/Varsity roster and see how many Pasadena kids they have attending their school.
If SF wants to make the playoffs they have got to soften their schedule. I know, I know, that's not the message you want your kids to hear. But it's true. As a member of a four-team league it is somewhat difficult to qualify for the playoffs, because only two teams get to go. If two of those teams are generally better than you, which is true in SF's case, than you look to at least get an at-large bid. Well, in order to qualify for an at-large bid a team MUST have a .500 mark or better. Period. Say they would've lost to Alemany and instead beat St. Paul this year, they still wouldn't have qualified for the playoffs under the at-large format. Chaminade was in that circumstance this year and quite frankly should've recieved the at-large bid over Leuzinger, which shows you that you should just win your 2 or 3 league games.....but, just in case you don't, you can at least have a crack at the at-large bid with a .500 record. Every year SF will have to play two of the four Pac-5 teams from the Serra League which essentially means two losses (although Bishop Amat is winnable.) Those teams are great competition to prepare for league and the playoffs, and not that the other teams should be cream puffs, but they should all at least be winnable games.
What will be interesting to see is whether or not the Star-News will pick SF as the top preseason team in the area next summer as they have done the last few seasons, only to see SF finish second to Muir in the final polls (I predicted that would happen too.) Good luck next year G-Knights!!!
If SF recruits they better get a better recruiter!
Of course St. Francis recruits. They want the best students that can handle their curriculum. When my son was looking for a high school to attend, he was never asked if he played football or any other sport. He was told about the acadamics that they had to offer. Playing football came later when my son stepped on the field and displayed his talents. The coaches nurtured him on the field just as the teachers saw to it that he excelled in the classroom. Many of the students that leave do so, because they cannot handle the academic workload.
All private schools recruit. That's how they stay in business. They strive to attract the best students they can. If the kid can bench press 400 pounds all the better.
SF recruits are you kidding me? Just because they have a bunch of Pasadena kids doesn't mean squat. Pasadena is less than a mile from the S.F. and the majority of their student hail from Pasadena. So saying the recruit kids from Pasadena is a little silly.
SF does recruit how do they get Pasadena kids on there team every year? Many of theses kids cant afford the school and last 1 or 2 seasons. why do you think they transfer out so much , after they figure how coach bonds lied to them.many of there best players come from pasadena .... Miles ... Kyle Morgann...Lance mitchell...Demtric Riley.... and many more
Arcadia has a tough first game @ Rancho Verde. They were rated #1 in Central Division for a while before losing to the in-town rival. Should be another tough one for Arcadia.
Beating St. Francis was your "main goal"? Thats pretty pathetic. Maybe you should have focused on bigger things - like maybe winning league or getting out of the first round of the playoffs. Just an idea.
P.S. Brilliant use of the word son.
I dont know why you idiots think sf recruits. If they recruited sf would win cif every year. The powers that be should look at alemany, oaks christian, crespi. How do these teams all of a sudden get all these players from the public schools to transfer? Im pretty sure their parents cant afford those schools. SF isnt going to let someone in just because of football grades and family matter. Also sf losing to Arcadia was an absolute fluke. Lets see what they do next year without Walker. I dont think that Jared Lorenzens little brother is going to get the job done.
WHO CARES ABOUT ST. FRANCIS ARCADIA BEAT DEM SON AHHAHAHA
THAT was like Arcadia's main goal just to beat them dis year
People can say oh they don't have a good team this year, but just look at them they have nice everything, they play harder teams and they get to recruit
This was the most conservative playcalling that I have ever witnessed by Bonds' staff! It was a horrible game to watch as well.
