FOOTBALL: Matadors need OT to get past Santa Fe
San Gabriel escapes with 14-7 win in OT

SAN GABRIEL -- Under normal circumstances, being the top seed usually gives a team an easier route through the postseason.
In the case of San Gabriel High School's football team, the seedings are merely a number and there is work to be done.
The Matadors, the No. 1 seed in the CIF-Southern Section Southeast Division playoffs, may perhaps have the toughest road in the postseason of any team in the Southern Section, evidenced by Friday night's game against talented Santa Fe in the opening round.
The Chiefs gave San Gabriel all it could handle before the Matadors pulled out a 14-7 overtime victory in a game played at San Gabriel High.
Nick Castillo scored on a 4-yard run in OT to give the Matadors the lead.
"It felt great in overtime, and I want to thank the line," said Castillo, who led the Matadors with 67 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. "(Felipe) Figueroa made a good block, and without Felipe's help we would've been stopped."
Figueroa came up with the defensive play of the game when he hit Santa Fe running back Aaron Turner, forcing a fumble on the Chiefs' first play in overtime.
Figueroa then pounced on the ball to send the Matadors (9-2) to the second round, where they will travel to play La Habra, a 55-7 winner over Ocean View.
"(Felipe) did an awesome job playing at outside linebacker for us," San Gabriel coach Keith Jones said.
The Matadors outgained the Chiefs (5-6) in total yardage, 302 yards to 201.
"I knew this was going to be a tough game," Jones said. "They have athletes and can pound the ball."
San Gabriel had a chance to win it in regulation when it got the ball at its own 39-yard line and used its two-minute offense to move to the Santa Fe 24.
But Patrick Courtney's 41-yard field-goal attempt was just short with 2.3 seconds remaining to set up the extra session.
Early in the second quarter, San Gabriel marched 65 yards in seven plays to get on the board on a 2-yard touchdown run by Castillo.
"We came in not expecting a blowout," Castillo said. "There were a lot of times we could have capitalized but we didn't. But when we had to step up, the whole team stepped up."
Matadors quarterback Isaac Valdez was 15-of-25 passing for 187 yards with two interceptions.
Santa Fe opened the second half with a 16-play, 79-yard drive that chewed up more than 10 minutes of clock.
After the Chiefs converted on a pair of fourth-down situations, Turner took it in for a 4-yard touchdown to tie the game with 2:41 to play in the third.

you must be some third string tight end....cough
wasnt matt barkely a freshmam when he started under center for mater dei??? age has nothing to do with it, if he was a sophmore than that means he already had a year to prepare...!!! id like to see that morales pass when all his recievers are covered and when he finally has some kidn of pressure attacking him from his front and back side, which he hasnt felt all year because of the highlanders week opponents...!!! but nevertheless it should once again be an easy victory for the clansman because of another secound string so called varsity team that lahabra is always so reluctant to play...!!!!
Congratulations to both teams that made it this far. Someday, you'll look back and win or lose, it was fun and it was special. Don't pay attention to these negative blogs. These are just people that are so proud of your accomplishments, they want to be a part of it. Unfortunately, someone has to win and someone has to lose. Don't worry though, as time passes, you'll be fine. Again, great job and congratulations!
i donno, we dint win last year because of our qb getting hurt, and that left it up to a sophmore. this year our o line is way better and i dont think has even given up a sack if any maybe 2 all year. u can blitz all you want but chris mo doesnt miss his target cuz our receivers catch everything.
just hit lahabra hard in the mouth and theyll back down...!!! ive seen it for my own eyes, last years schurr game, they couldnt take the beatin givin to them...!!!cover their recievers and theyre done, their qb isnt very mobile so it should be easy to get to him...!!! blitz blitz blitz...!!!
to guy: who do u think u are??? ur probably some third string tight end
TO GUY:
haha WOW. You need to do some reading. Ronnie Hillman transfered for PERSONAL reason not because he didn't start freshman year he didn't even play. Another thing about the "power houses" they RECRUIT. In other words they invite players to play there and obviously they have been a dominant team for years so the players best interest would to go there. La Habra DOESN'T recruit so may I say La Habra is a damn good team without recruiting. And Greg got a FULL RIDE scholarship. Other players didn't just because they are going there doesn't mean they got a scholarship. I hope you realize you just made yourself look totally stupid.

well sg,looks like its time to get ready for ur spring sports...!!!
so much for san gabriel showin us a lesson and sayin we were "soft" lol...
watch the film of that game and see how many guys get laid out by us hahahah.
shoot even i had a good shot on a huge fella.
on to cal. sry SG you just arent up there with us.
SG,
comparing la habra to all those division 1 teams was a bad saying, but im pretty sure everyone of our guys are big, strong and fast. and ronnie hillman is a junior, runs a 4.4 40 yarder, and gets invited to ucla to watch games. hmm hate to say it but everyone thinks la habra is going to win, like i said good luck going home early next week and until your offseason starts
guy,
You sound like 'friar guy' from the Whittier Daily News blog website.
You're a loser, stay off these blogs.
Hye guy,
Are you on the bandwagon for the OC powerhouses? If so, maybe you should compare them to the other junior colleges around town, because those schools you mentioned have enrollment borders similar to those of the JC's.
hey lahabra, ya right are u honestly serious??? i dont think u could even hold mater deis jock strap let alone hang in the first quarter with them...!!! how many d1 scholarships do u have pending??? ur best player ever to come to that school last year (greg francis) could barely make it to a small little d3 school, so wat makes u think u can hang in the ring with the big dogs??? wow, so u blew sunny hills and buena park outta the water, heres a news flash, so did sonora...!!! if u were in mater deis league u would probably be a buena park or a sunny hills to them...!!! i doubt ur best player this year (ronnie hillman) could start at any of those schools. why dont u ask him why he transfered over to lahabra his freshamn year, wats the matter hillman couldnt start on the freshman team...!!! hey valley guys, u guys suck too...!!! u couldnt even hold lahabras jock strap...!!! why u ask??? cause ur athletes arent as good, ur off season and in season trainnig isnt as good as well as ur coaches...!!! all in all servite, mater dei, and orangelutheran would rip u all apart...!!! happy thanksgiving yall...!!!
I will put all my money on Orange Lutheran and Mater Dei destroying La Habra if they played them. DON'T TRY TO COMPARE YOUR LITTLE SCHOOL TO THOSE SCHOOLS!!! YOU DON'T EVEN BELONG IN THE SAME SENTENCE!!! PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS!!!!!!!
Yo SG,
you guys may think u can win against us. what u guys play all shitty teams who dont have good programs and think ur good. we didnt win last year because our super accurate qb got hurt and it was left up to a sophmore who never plays. im not going to lie i feel sad for you guys. our recievers Never drop passes and our o line are all Huge and quick and fast. also are defense is top ranked in the OC. ya real teams such as mater dei and orange lutheran. well happy thanksgiving and good luck getting out of school early next week:D
Well spoken, LHHS player.
Looking forward to Friday night lights......
Well I get all my info from MaxPreps a very well established highschool website. Their prediction La Habra will win 41-17. So San Gabriel don't start the talking yet. If you win then by all means go for it but now i believe La Habra has the upper hand in ALL situations.
highlander, lady highlander, and clan pride...
please stop embarrasing la habra. all your doing is justifying thier assumptions that we are ignorent to the situation at hand and showing a ridiculous lack self control by pulling a race card and all the garbage that is being posted.
sure im not a starter. but i do play. and i am down on that field. our practices this week were hard and im assuming san gabriels was just as tough. We are both great teams obviously because... lets be honest... this IS the playoffs. everyone is atleast Decent. and they may have gotten the first seed because of the troy thing but they would have been close to the top anyway to be seeded 1.
so please stop talking all the trash. the games almost here. come support the teams because it is sure to be a doozy. and dont think for one second that la habra is soft san gabriels fans. thats one thing i must say to you. because we have outscored our opponents this year 455-93. If you do your math right thats less then 10 points scored on us a game and more then 45 points a game scored on our opponents.
just show up. watch football. and hopfully we come out on top!
GO HIGHLANDERS!!!
Here lies proof of loopholes in our educational system.
San Gabriel Matador Fans,
Wish you the best of luck at this coming Friday's game against our Highlanders.
Let the helmets and shoulder pads do the talking.
Stop by our snack shack and enjoy a meal, Firehouse chili w/corn bread or carne asada tacos.
Highlander and Clan Pride,
SHUT YOUR MOUTH!
sg is soft?? they dont run the ball?? Did Nick Castillo
[1 of the 2 Sophmore Sensations] led the Almont league in scoring? I think he did!! Isaac Valdez is DEFINETLY "SLINGING" the ball around with 2,212 as a SOPHMORE!! and a LEAGUE CHAMPION!! SG is VERY balanced and all that is due to the "weak" o-line..haha HIGHLANDER you crack me up. La Habra is good. No Doubt about that. They Have studs all over the field. but SG will make this game competitive and might just pull off a win. If STANFORD can BEAT USC.. SG can beat LA HABRA.
Hey LHcoach you ain't no coach, you sound like a little girl, all afraid of San Gabriel like they are any good. You are probably justsome kids dad who is all afraid n stuff
Hey LH coach, yeah right
Like one of our coaches is posting on the internet. A coach wouldn't have to justify crap and wouldn't be on here like a whimpering towel boy sounding afraid of San Gabriel for Christ's sake.
Guess what SG, we can talk all the biz we want and still beat you by 50.
Y'all San Gabriel people will see.....come on down to the OC and watch the ash whompin'
Highlander,
Not all white people are smart and not all hispanics are uneducated. Your generalities regarding race have no place in sport and in society. Do yourself and the world a favor and get an education.
why doesnt everyone just stop talking all the nonsense and let the youngmen play on friday night and then we will definantly see who the better team is.
Are you kidding me!!. Who are you claiming to be highlander and lady highlander. You are certainly not anyone I have ever heard of around La Habra. If you are a La Habra fan shut your pie hole and crawl back under the rock you came out from, you do not represent our school, team or community. As a staff we have a great deal of respect for San Gabriel as a team, very well coached with kids who obviously play hard. We are looking forward to playing a very good opponent, good luck to San Gabriel.
Just what I heard from probably thee most knowledgable source. But hey, I could be wrong. Go Spartans!!
highlander you coward !you spread ur hate an ignorance thru a computer , an it takes away from this wonderful game !i hope ur not directly involved with LH football program or d school . you closet racist !!!
SPARTANALUM86:
I have never heard any of the Schurr players (class of 07 0r 08) say that La Habra was "dirty" and alot of players funnel trough our house on a daily basis..They do say La habra was suprised at how hard they were being "HIT'!!
HIGHLANDER::
You problably don't even play!!! or never have. To say last year was a FLUKE is a joke.. We beat you in all aspects of the game. THAT DAY.. Just say good luck to both teams. And BRING THE WATER TO THE REAL PLAYERS DURING TIMEOUTS!!!!!
Highlander & Lady Highlander,
If you read, I did NOT SAY NOR DO I CARE where the HELL LA HABRA IS!!! MY comments were toward the ignorant ASSHO%^"S talking about "RICH WHITE BOYS" & "SLOW MEXICANS" of which I am neither. And last of all I AIN'T YOUR HOMEBOY....
I forgot I cared where La Habra is.
Highlander,
Go cry to your mom because no one in here wants to hear it.
Highlander, just go away please. You embarass yourself and the school
Lets talk about who's "soft" now. You guys throw the ball every play and don't even barely run. You don't even know the meaning of physical. I've seen you guys, you suck up front and I never saw you hit anybody. You might be tough kids, but your brand of football is like twinkie soft.
Sling it around the field I don't thinks so maybe toss it around is more like it. Don't kid yourself HS, the QB won't be why they win the game if they win. He just has to try not to loose it.
Well coached? HAHAHA
Here's the meeting on Sunday -
HC - Hey essay, did you see the Raiders game holmes?
Asst - yeah Vato, those plays were tight
HC - Simone carnal, let's like run that stuff monie
Asst - yeah, it'll be like the fifteen thousandth different play we've put in this year, but what the hell essay, it's like all the other teams in LA county do the same thing holmes
classic
San Gabriel is a well coached team and each player knows their role very well. They leave their heart on the field and play for one another. There is no doubt that La Habra is a good team. You can't go undefeated playing the teams they play against and not be good. However, that being said, SG will be ready for this game. A soph qb who can sling it all over the field and knows the scheme well is rare. Very mature for his age. If he doesn't get nervous, plays within himself and leads the team, LH will get more than a good game. SG has nothing to lose playing against "a better team" away from home. They will leave it all out there guaranteed.
Its going to take the best game by a good "team" (which SG has been all year) to defeat LH. LH has something to prove and would like nothing better than to do it against any Almont league foe (thank you Schurr). The cards are stacked against SG but thats why they play the games. A loss to LH has no shame but a victory for San Gabriel is what legends are made of, remember what SG did to Santa Fe in 2003. Go Mats
Ms. Highlander,
The name of the poster is at the bottom of each post.
Uhh "get'em dawgs" haha La Habra IS in Orange County. Who needs to get their facts straight? haha..

Did you guy's forget this is just a game? Cmon don't judge skill by the race or vice versa...rich or poor...the richest kid can bench or start...the poorest kid can be the worst or best....cmon man that's pathetic i feel ashamed as a whole to see what competitveness can do to teenagers and parents alike... Grow up cheer on your kids team and school and have a fun night.... putting weight on these kids shoulders just gives them another reason to feel down or cautious in the game.....Foot ball is Football not even 1/3 if the team of either team will make it to proffessional ball so let them have a good time and stop ruining something that can be a good experience ..shame on your selves
I LOVE how San Gabriel is soooooo confident going into this game. Yes your first seeded but we WERE first seeded until the Troy/Fullerton incident. Who cares if there are WHITES on the team but i believe we have a well cultured team consisting of African American,Hispanic,White,Asian and im sure there are many more. Just come out strong San Gabriel because if you dont I will garantee you lose early in the game.
Some of you bloggers crack me up. San Gabriel is a well coached team that has players who play hard and have earned the right to represent their school and community in the playoffs. La Habra year in and year out does a fine job of representing their school and community as well. It's easy for some of you to come on this forum and sling the race card around simply because you can hide behind your screens and call someone a slow Mexican or a rich white boy without having to let people know who you really are. Lets talk about the game and what should be a very good game between to very good football teams. FYI, I saw the interview between the OC register and coach Mazzotta of La Habra. If you payed careful attention, it was the reporter who dissed San Gabriel. Mazzotta was only answering his question about Sante Fe. Good luck to both schools.
Just hit La Habra at the line and they will fold. Get to their QB, he doesnt like to get hit. Its a fact. I saw it first hand last year at the Schurr game. With SG's excellent LB's, they have a real shot at getting to LH's QB. Then you can hear the LH parents scream about the "dirty" hits.
Im not gonna lie, LH is an outstanding team, but they are beatable. Good luck SG. Represent the Almont league well. Maybe we'll get another shot at you in the finals.-A Schurr fan.
PS. Beware! The Schurr kids were talking about how LH is the dirtiest team ever in the "pile". Be ready to get sucker punched by them.
Uh...PurdueAlum05.
La Habra is a bedroom community located in northern Orange County with a population of nearly 62,000 residents.
There's a couple new things you might be interested in: a Thomas Guide Map and/or the Internet.
Grow up, do we need to pull the race card???? You should be ashamed..... This blog should be shutdown...
Highlander,
You have no clue what you're talking about. I maybe a South Pas Alumni, but I will admit San Gabriel has excellent coaching staff. They play us hard tough every year and wouldn't be surprised
if they knock you out of the playoffs.
Just to let you know Highlander, La Habra is not in OC, it's on the border of OC and LA County, but it's actually in LA County. You might want to get your facts straight before you come in our house and talk trash.
I also want to say good luck to Blair, Monrovia, TC and PHS this week. Hopefully, we can see one or two of you guys bring home a title.
Did anybody else see the La habra coach dis SG? He said he expected to play Santa Fe on the Whittier daily news sight. Didn't even give us a chance.
Check out the video.

This exchange is disgusting. BTW, La Habra's enrollment is 54% Hispanic as compared to San Gabriel's enrollment of 39% Hispanic. Not that it matters, other than hoping to end this pointless back and forth nonsense.
I hope you guys focus on football and not on other crap.
All u rich white boys at LA HABRA do is hand the ball to the minorities and let them dominate the game for u!!
you both have strong teams and will have a great game on Friday. Talk up your team/players and leave the racial slurs and rude generalizations of this blog.
you both have strong teams and will have a great game on Friday. Talk up your team/players and leave the racial slurs and rude generalizations of this blog.
it's good to see you guys are sticking to football and supporting your teams instead of stooping to racial slurs and rude generalizations. you both have strong teams and should be talking up your players/teams instead of slinging mud.
The OC is a bunch of rich soft white boys who should stay in the POP Warner league and leave HS football to the players of color who get the work done.
OK, maybe you score on the second string JV kids because they'll have to come in once it's 56-0 at the half. SG is just a bunch of poor slow Mexican kids who are tough, but they can't hold a candle to La Habra or any good OC team. Not enough firepower. Then it's time for the next crap LA county team before we get to do what we didn't finish and whoop Fullerton's ass in the finals.
highlander... SG DOESN'T get shut out homeboy. and thats a promise.
HaHa
We will see who is wearing the skirts on friday night. L.A. county teams are poorly coached with no real talent. Schurr is about the only team with a real coaching staff. Hey Matador, will show you what a shutout is, Orange County style.
ha ha highlander you should win with all that talent. but when you lose what will be the excuse this year. i know when you got out coached and out hit at schurr last year i just heard and read alot a highlander crying and make excuses. fluke only scoring 7 points and that was in the fourth qtr i dont think so. oh yeah put the blame on the back-up QB. the team in LA county work hard for whatevr they have. just remeber that the next time you go to your tennis lesson.
Highlander,
We probably will lose, but we will not have a score of 0. We will fight on til the end, and show you that the SGV can still compete with schools much larger then ours. This year is our year, and we'll show you what true pride is.
Good job San Gabriel, now prepare to be hammered. La Habra will will win 63-0.
These LA county teams suck. Yeah Schurr beat us last year but that was a total fluke. You're going to see what OC football is all about.
