La Salle can't stop Santa Clara in 64-28 defeat
By Scott Galetti Staff Writer
OXNARD -- Maybe it was the long drive from Pasadena up the 101 freeway.
Perhaps it was a post-Thanksgiving hangover.
Whatever was the case, La Salle High School literally looked helpless against No. 2-seeded Santa Clara in Friday's second round of the CIF-Southern Section Mid-Valley Division playoffs at Channel Islands High School.
Santa Clara running back Cierre Wood also played a slight role.
The highly recruited junior rushed for 268 yards and four touchdowns in the first half to lead the Saints to a 64-28 victory.
He didn't get another carry the rest of the way.
Woods collected scoring runs of 38, 26, 72 and 97 yards while Donald Espinosa added three scoring runs as Santa Clara (9-1-1) amassed 466 yards rushing.
In all, the Saints outgained the Lancers (6-6) in total offense 451-129 in the first half and 546-262 in the contest.
While Wood and Espinosa were running wild, La Salle had trouble with numerous dropped passes.
Both teams were caught with their share of penalties.
La Salle was flagged seven times for 86 yards, while Santa Clara had eight penalties for 84 yards.
Lancers quarterback Chase Rettig was 16-of-33 for 200 yards and three touchdowns.
"Unfortunately, we didn't play our best football tonight," La Salle coach Ealar Gallagher said. "We were a little banged up, but you can't take anything away from Santa Clara. They're a great team."
Santa Clara used Wood as a decoy on its first drive and mixed up the playbook en route to a six-play, 64-yard drive that was capped on a 60-yard touchdown pass from Randi Vines to Mike Keith less than two minutes into the contest.
An early mistake came back to haunt the Lancers when a bad snap on a punt attempt was returned to the Lancers' 17-yard line.
Espinosa carried it in from 17 yards on the next play to give the Saints a 13-0 advantage.
He had 95 yards on eight attempts.
After a La Salle punt, Wood broke off a 38-yard scoring run to make it 20-0.
Santa Clara blocked Sean Kelly's next point to get the ball at the Lancers' 26.
Wood scored easily on the next play to put the Lancers' backs against the wall, 26-0.
Michael Palffy returned the ensuing kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown to get La Salle (6-6) on the board, but Vines scored from four yards out on Santa Clara 's next possession to increase the Saints' cushion to 36-7.
Santa Clara's defense stopped La Salle on fourth-and-goal at the Saints' 2-yard late in the first half when Ryan Doeppel was stopped for a 1-yard loss to turn the ball over to the Saints on downs.
Wood delivered the knockout blow when he broke free down the sideline for a 97-yard touchdown to give Santa Clara an insurmountable 57-14 halftime advantage.
After beginning the season 0-4, the Lancers' comeback season came to an end.
"I was proud of the way our team battled all season long," Gallagher said.

While I by and large think a detachment of the chairperson and CEO is a right matter, particularly in public companies, it is not a sound resolution to set up 2 individuals of analogous ages, tremendous egos and healthy ambition in this kind of place relative to each other. They tell a camel is a horse fashioned by a committee. This is a two humped camel.
Nice!! Great Ifo. Great People. Great Blog. Thank you for all the great sharing that is being done here.

Although the results of sugaring can be patchy for inexperienced practitioners, it can be performed at home and is less painful than waxing. Other suitable treatments include creams, tweezing, electric shavers and razors.
Excellent read, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing a little research on that. And he actually bought me lunch because I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch!
Been looking for this article for long time ago and finally found here. thanks for sharing this post. appreciate!

Thanks for sharing. Its a great post!
New Orleans Saints jerseys is very beautiful.
Sorry for the huge review, but I'm really loving the Arizona Cardinals, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it's the right choice for you.
Great article-would like to publish in my free newsletter for seniors but was wondering if the information applies to Washington residents as well?
Yes, it appears that Brentwood and Maranatha need new coaches.
Well - St. Margaret's beat Brentwood 36-6 tonight so all you coaching experts can start blogging for Brentwood to fire their coach - obviously he couldn't win the big game either...
I bet it sucks being a Brentwood player or parent right now with them having such a lousy coach and all...
Have fun blaming THIS one on Coach Murphy.
OH MY GOD!!!!! You have got to be kidding me. Is this what it has come down to, identity theft? ROFLMAO……….
Mr.Anon,SpikeLee,EnoughAlready, YOU WIN!!!!! I’m throwing in the towel. I ‘m really shocked that you didn’t add Joel Murphy to your list of characters.
Man, and I really thought that I was in a good fight with a set of triplets not homers…..
Be that what it may, I humbly fall to my knees surrendering to your almightiness….
Hey girlfriend, when you and all your sisters want to man up again, bring it, otherwise Happy Holidays ladies!!!!!!!!
Yours truly…
hsftblfn aka RonW aka Small team fan….
p.s. Sorry Goteamgo that the triplets had to involve you in their lack of originality.
goteamgo:
OK OK if you haven't figured it out yet I am also RonW and Small team fan. So what! I also promise to stop repeatedly using phrases from Jim Rome's Jungle: ie: "fishwrap", "circling the drain", "Have a take and dont suck" and (like i should do now) "hit the bricks"
"rack me"
Temper, temper MrAnon,SpikeLee,EnoughAlready, talk about striking a nerve. Witty? MHS parent? How original.
My sincere apologies to all those who are being “bored” by my dry sense of humor. But once again I ask that avoided dreaded question, do you really want us to think and believe that you triplets can be someone other than a “DISGRUNTLED MHS VARSITY PARENT” You have to really scroll down Mr. Galetti’s talk prep sports section to get to this topic. I know why I’m on here, I can’t imagine anyone else outside of the MHS community (MRAnon,SpikeLee,EnoughAlready) who would even waste their time scrolling down reading this nonsense let alone bang away a response on their keyboard. (hint, hint)
Tell you what triplets, I’ll give you guys a break, because obviously all of you have reached the end of your road with your lack of ability to justify any of your “blah, blah, blah” on here.
A bit of advice triplets, make sure that when you choose to post discrediting information about anyone on this blog, have the proof. The “I heard it from someone” card just does not cut it.
Question for you, which would you rather be? The hammer or the nail?
Can’t wait to hear your response. I’m going to be a bitter right now and quote a living legend by saying plain and simply……
“HAVE A TAKE, DON’T SUCK!!!!!!!
OUT!
Both/all of you...SHUT... UP! Do you hsftbal fan (mhs parent) really think you're that witty? You are boring the rest of us to death. get over it and move on.
MrAnon/SpikeLee/Enough Already, all I can say is “classic” you big bully you. Excellent call this time on leaving out the “hey” intro, really had me fooled there for a second. Guess there is another imaginary supporter for the “I hate the MHC HC and MHS program” to stand along side with.
Nothing like a good heavyweight bout where two or in your case four guys stand in the middle of the ring and slug it out.
I sure that reading truth is not always what individuals like yourself want to be doing at 10:11 PM 10:42 PM 10:47 PM but sometimes it has to be written.
Like I said, what upper division parent would keep coming on this blog (to be politically correct) and want to continue with this banter, unless (drum roll please) you are a DISGRUNTLED MHS VARSITY PARENT!!!!!!
As stated, we can come on here to agree to disagree just as long as you keep what this blog is intended to be about, and that is (drum roll again please) INFORMATIVE FOOTBALL ISSUES!!!!! and not personal attacks.
Oh yea, and walking away without presenting yourself could also classify you as a COWARD!!!!!!!
DING, DING, round 4!!!!!
hsfblfan
I feel safer already with you standing guard..You're way too cool for this blog, Mr last word!...Why the "great interest" in the "puke" and "hate" is such an ugly word.
"informative insight"? What a joke, mhs football parent! Thats exactly what got your short hairs up!
Note: this is a blog OF the fishwrap. Don't confuse the two! Keep up the brown-nosing and the fishwrap just might come calling for someone with your wit, sports knowlegde and literary talent...You Big Honker puncher, you !
I hope your not a hsbsktblfan. Enough already or is getting in the last word just too irresistible. You failed to mention a third option when confronted by a bully...WALK AWAY!
Goteamgo,
Well written, good points BUT let me throw this wrench into your analysis of this situation.
When I was young and witnessed those kids that got picked on, I was told that “that” kid was called a bully. I was also told that in order to put a stop to that bully you had one of two choices, turn the other cheek and continue to get picked on or walk right up to that bully look him dead in the eyes and say enough is enough. That is what we have on going with this particular topic.
To call out those individuals who come on here to “praise” the coaching staffs for all their dedication, commitment and most importantly the time they spend away from their own families, “preachers” is outer nonsense. To challenge or make accusations like the ones MrAnon/SpikeLee make regarding a particular family situation between a HC and his brother is pathetic. Do those two individuals (yea right) even know the HC of Maranatha personally enough to make that accusation? I know, it’s a case of “he said, she said”
Like I said, I am a high school football fan who throughout the year has come onto this blog to read about SGV football. I have taken a great interest in reading the “puke” that has come out of the mouths of some of these “disgruntled parents” Who else would take the time to come on here and write all the nasty obviously meant to discredited the HC of Maranatha garbage other than a disgruntled MHS parent. Do you really want us to think that a Div 12 Div 11 Div 10 team would even give a rats hind end about Maranatha and what is going on there. Ok and Santa Claus really does coming sliding down the chimney Christmas Eve, come on people, get real!!!!
Leave this blog for what it is intended to be used for, plain and simply, informative insight into high school sports. There is nothing wrong with the right for us to agree to disagree but keep the personal attacks out of this fish wrap.
Best believe people, that as long as some of you want to be bullies on here, you better get ready to get punched right in that big honker of yours.
BRING IT ON SISTERS!!!!!!! LOL
Scott, FYI, Fred is going to go to registration next season, we sure could use that here, something to think about.
I reiterate my 11/26 post below - maybe add this time that some should not comment to provoke and get these lenghthy responses from the Maranatha fans.
---------------------------
When I was young, I learned that the kids who got picked on were those who would react when picked on.
With that said, many bloggers have learned that when you pick on Maranatha, you will get a reaction, and some people no doubt think it is probably fun to get their dander up.
So if some Maranatha fans stay away from the preachyness and complaints about various things, and stop being reactive to every negative comment made in response to the certain postings of a few (you need to take the good comments along with the bad), all should be fine.
They had a good year. There is nothing wrong about being proud of your school, but sometimes it is how you say it.
MrAnon,
Eyechart? Ouch that hurt. How is it that you are able to get both feet into your mouth? Stop already, talk about hitting a nerve, and I quote,
By the way my sons attend Private school but a school with a real coach who actually played the game. And I'm not talking about 8-man HS ball!!
How is it that you know so much of the “playing policy” at (spelled) Maranatha not (maranantha) if your son does not go there? Oh wait, I know, your sidekick Spike Lee let you in on the football operations of the program.
Here’s a hint for you pal, when you come onto this or any other fish wrap to vent your displeasures, and you want to drum up an imaginary support base, try and use different greetings genius! To quote you again,
Hey eyechart (hsftblfan)!
Hey hsftblfan:
Unlike you MrAnon/Spike Lee I am not a parent at MHS, I am as my call sign indicates a hsftblfn who is getting a kick at watching an individual like yourself with so much obvious hatred for the HC of MHS circling the drain. I have to tell you, I look forward to coming on here in anticipation of what quality writing I am going to read from you.
ONE FOR ALL…….ALL FOR ONE!!!!!!! The MHS code of honor….lol……
OUT!!!!!!!!
Hey hsftblfan:
"...Do the right thing and ...just be supportive.."???
Are you kidding me! You Maranantha people kill me.
I hope this is not what they are teaching your kids there.
Hey eyechart (hsftblfan)!
Just because you use a cute handle doesn't make you any less anonymous.
I like the way you 3 or 4 maranantha parents stick together...strength in numbers and all that! By the way my sons attend Private school but a school with a real coach who actually played the game. And I'm not talking about 8-man HS ball!!
I thought every kid at maranantah plays. You only have about 30 kids on the squad!
I've obviously struck a nerve...Was it because your week schedule ( school for the deaf and the boys home tsk, tsk tsk...)was exposed? Or was it that the ugly side of your little coach was?
I commend you Mhs bloggers for your vigilance and team work but your blind and naive loyalty is shameful.
MrAnon
At last we have arrived at the truth. Tell us sir and be honest now, you really are a disgruntled parent of a MHS Varsity (non starter) player right? Do you really think that coming on this fish wrap and “venting” your displeasure for the coaching staff of MHS is the right thing to do? Here’s an original idea for you, how about manning up and having a sit down face to face with the head coach and privately express those concerns.
It is individuals like yourself who come onto this blog without any idea or knowledge of what it takes to even begin to establish a program. Correct me if I’m wrong sir but don’t most of the players that attend MHS come to the school with hardly any tackle playing experience? From what I understand MHS is on the up swing regardless of the teams they have played 19-6 is not to shabby. How could anyone (that knows the game of football) even try to compare the HC from St. Marg to MHS’s HC. It just amazes me how many boneheads come on here to give their expert opinions trying to use statistics as a way of justifying their positions when in all reality they couldn’t even coach their way out of a shoebox.
Do the right thing sir, god knows you are already paying enough for it and just be supportive; otherwise there is always public school.
Can hardly wait for your response…….
RonW, don’t waste your time responding back to this character, he (or she) is just like a dog, running around in a circle chasing it’s own tail……
RonW(indbag):
Please don't take this the wrong way BUT How about let's say....ONE... big win..This season OR "last season"?
It just seems that when all the chips are on the table (This year or "last year"...I like the way you spun last year in when needed...!) you seem to get outcoached.Simple as that.
You even have stated so several times on this blog. We don't get many bloggers admitting so about their own coach. Point taken. Thanks for being honest.
With the quality of the areas coaches on the rise you've missed the boat. I'm sure your coach is liked by his team and their PARENTS ( at least the starters)but what about the FOOTBALL fans out there?
Anon / JohnM
Please don't take this the wrong way, I think alot of the "problems" concerning Maranatha is simple misinformation. No one is trying to "spin", what would be the purpose? No one is looking for respect or whining - in fact most of the posts are thanking the boys for a fun season and Scott and PSN for their coverage.
Anon- there were 20 seniors at the beginning of the season, a few were lost to injuries. Most games had 8-10 seniors starting - I apologize for the confusion.
The wins are the wins, the record is the record. The Minutemen have to play the teams in their league, I am sure you understand this. The teams played in the "preseason" had a combined record of 36-14 this year. Again, it is what it is and I hope you don't find that offensive. Maranatha got out coached and out played by Mojave. It shouldn't have happend, also Mojave got beat in the first round of the playoffs, but if you follow college football you can see that sometimes the team that is supposed to win doesn't.
Did Maranatha get "worked" by Brentwood? if 28-14 is worked then you are correct. You also know Maranatha "worked" Brentwood twice last season. Maranatha finished league this season and last season with one loss. Whittier Christian finished league last season with one loss, they got "worked" by the same Brentwood team that Maranatha "worked" twice.
This season WC finished third in league having been "worked" by Brentwood and Maranatha.
Maranatha got "worked" by St. Margaret's last season in the CIF Final game by one point. We parents like to think that if we had gone for two points and made it, the Minutemen would have "worked" St. Margaret's! If I understand your spin of "worked" - then St. Margaret's has "worked" everyone for a long time.
That is not easy to do -
If the object of the posts are to turn people against the coaching staff at Maranatha, it's not working too well. There are issues on every staff of every team at every level. But again, the record is the record and it's a pretty good one. Would it be nice to win EVERY big game? OK - you have a good idea - let's work towards that goal, it is a great target. Just please don't expect us to turn on our staff if they don't deliever zero loss season after zero loss season.
Brentwood and Whittier Christian are great schools with great programs. St. Margaret's, ditto, I think they have the longest active winning streak in high school football now. Good for them, they earned it and they deserve it.
For us - we like Maranatha football and though we didn't make it back to the finals this season, I think the boys got better and learned some valuable life lessons.
I invite everyone to come out next season and catch a few games. I warn Anon ahead of time though, you will see some good, some bad, and some ugly - you will also see a great bunch of guys and cheerleaders, and even coaches, doing their best and having a great time.
Respect is earned on the field not by moving into Ambassador College or whining on this blog. Win something Maranatha and the media will come knocking on your door. A little humility can go a long way.
Anon
Why does Maranatha's coaching concern you soooo much? Does you child attend MHS? You seem very caught up in the coaching and the fact that Kyle is gone. Yes, Kyle Delahoke was (and is ) a great kid but, even he would tell you he wasn't the whole team. In fact he would tell you that it all was a team effort. Don't beleive me go back and read anything written about him. He always gave credit first to GOD, then to his team.
And yes there was leadership on the team.. maybe not the kind you want to see but having gone to a few games I saw it plain and clear. So maybe MR Anon you should worry about your own childs school, and cut Ron W some slack.
Windbag? is that the best you can do?
wow! RonW
Nice spin! Now we know what the "W" stands for: WINDBAG!!
The blogger said you had about 20 Seniors not "started" 20 seniors...Why twist his'her words?... and were they correct or not?
Didn't about a third of those big W's you are bragging about come against teams like the school for the deaf (NOT a joke)as well as Kilpatrick (home for boys)and Pasadena Marshall???
AND yall lost to MOJAVE...Yes, that powerhouse...
Got CRUSHED TWICE this year by St. M's and blew another shot at a league championship by getting worked by Brentwood this year and Whittier Christian last year.
Spin as you will. But sooner or later I bet you all get tired of getting out coached in the big games.
Now you know quite well your AD would take a Welch caliber Coach in a minute given the opportunity. Better question is could you afford him? You obviously chose the cheaper route. I've seen your squad play a couple times. I didn't see anyone close to a team leader as The Delahooke kid.
For most teams losing doesn't automatically equate to getting out coached as you state but apparently you've grown accustom to it?
Hsftblfn,
Lumping TC into your equation as an argument really doesn't work. If Backus inherited an "empty cupboard" as you suggest, he took that nothing and made it into something. 5-7 got TC to the second round, the same final destination Mooney had in 06. Canyon Country may have been in the cellar at 4-6, marking a disapointing year. I don't think any TC fans would label this year as "disapointing"...even though myself and many others still lament the loss of a leader and solid football mind like MM. His reasons for "fleeing" are his own, I won't pretend to pontificate on what they are. Clearly we didn't have the guns to advance further, so if that was part of your empty cupboard..it is also part of the panaromic view that has morphed into SGV football...not indigenous to TC alone.
And finally, any transition of top tier coaches will result in a "hiccup" of some degree. An expectation of immmediate unbridled success is unreasonable.
Maybe the fact our overachiever JV squad are waiting for their League Co-champs patches has delayed the kneeling to the "Bring back Mike" gargoyle and thinking of yesterday as the good ol'days. Though no treasure trove,I still see some potential in our cupboard
You have got to be kidding me, here you genius are putting down a D-13 coach when not to far down the 210 there is a head coach who season after season has talent coming out of his nose and each season chokes it all away. If any coach should have hit the bricks a long time ago it should have been the coach from Monrovia. At least the TC and St. Marg’s head coaches had the common sense to realize that their cupboards were bear and hit the ground running. Let see, Canyon Country 2006 12-2 State Champions (under Harry Welch) 2007 4-6 last place. Temple City 2006 10-2 (under Mike Mooney) 2007 5-7.
I really like where Maranatha is headed under Joel Murphy. Small prep school getting all the attention on this fish wrap blog priceless. The way I see it, Joel has another 18 years to circle the drain as long as he keeps getting his teams into the playoffs.
"Personally, I think St. M should move up to D10 or at least D12 - I would rather see Finchamp have to deal with them."
I don't see it happening. The Academy League isn't even close to being as strong as the Alpha League in football (also, the schools, in general, are smaller in terms of enrollment). St. Margaret's only has about 200 boys at school and only 27 kids on the team.
I know that Rio Hondo Prep has a real small school, but I think the CIF really blew it when they moved them & the Prep League up. I think the playoff results prove it. Not sure if CIF is going to move people up real soon.
St. Margaret's loses its star player, Hunter Steffien and their QB, their best receivers, kicker, middle linebacker, etc. after this season. In short, they lose alot. Besides, they have to get by Calvary Murrieta first and then the winner of the Brentwood/SVC game. Still a lot of work to do. Brentwood looks real tough.
Is there a possibility Maranatha may move up from Div XIII? I have heard unsubstantiated rumors that might happen.
RonW,
That was a great and refreshing post.
Yikes!
OK - Calprep rates Alpha as the most difficult D13 league, just like Pac5 is the most difficult league in D1. D13 has a number of leagues with many schools (but you knew that already). I agree it sounds funny OK, but we can't all be the level of Crespi or LB Poly - remember playing baseball as a kid? I doubt you were on the Yankees or the Dodgers, but I bet you had some difficult intense games right?
No Maranatha did not start over 20 seniors, I would think it was more like 8-10. The team lost key players to injuries but still finished the regular season ranked third in D13 - Looking back, they finished the regular season last year ranked third in D13. Maybe D13 has collapsed since Delahooke went to Navy - what do you think Anon?
I believe ST. M has won 28-29 games in row and they now have hired one of the winningest coaches in high school football. Personally, I think St. M should move up to D10 or at least D12 - I would rather see Finchamp have to deal with them.
You are correct, this year the team lost Kyle and Collin and their best receiver to graduation. Every year it happens the same. The boys miss Kyle alot, next year they will miss the seniors from this team. This year they also missed their first and second string QB's. So they lost one more game and finished their season at the same time as all the other SGV teams that qualified for the playoffs.
Is there as much of a "hang the coach" uproar against those teams?
Next season they will have to play without #64 Caz Wolter on the line. Personally I think the team should fold (it's a joke, he's my boy) but just like this season they will have some great kids coming up, another years experience for the coaches, the program, and the parents, and if St. M doesn't move up at least #33 will have graduated!
I assume if St. M stays in D13 and Welch doesn't accept the Michigan coaching position, St. M and Maranatha will at least meet again in the playoffs next year.
I know for certain that the boys and the coaches were looking forward to a rematch with St. Margaret's this season. I am pretty sure the Minutemen were the only team to play them three times in 11 months. I think they would have rather faced them in the finals again, but the general feeling was "we gotta play them eventually, might as well be now".
Is Welch a better coach than Murphy? Did Murphy get out coached by Welch? Stupid question. Welch has been coaching ten years longer than Coach Murphy has been alive. Still, I don't see the Maranatha AD or any parents running to St. Margaret's trying to hire Welch away... I guess that makes us stupid too, oh well.
I think the team got out coached and got out played and guess what, they lost. Guess what else - It is going to happen to every other team in the playoffs except one. That is the way it works.
In the last two seasons the Minutemen also got out coached and out played SIX other times - but in those same two seasons, NINETEEN times Coach Murphy is friggin' brilliant and the boys are rock stars.
As a parent and a booster, it is pretty hard to get too upset at a 19-6 run. How do you call for a young coaches head that has lead his team to the CIF Finals his first year and the Quarter Finals in his second year?
Maranatha will have better seasons and they will have seasons where the wheels will come off. But I am confident they will keep growing as a program, they will continue to provide an excellent way to spend a Friday night, and the team will continue to be supported and appreciated by their fans.
I think that is what every school is looking for and wishes for their boys - right?
RonW,
Did I read correctly??? The Alpha League is the "...most competetive D13 league"
Thats an OxyMoron if I've ever seen one!
Just curious: How do you plan on improving for next year besides not scheduling St Margarets? A coaching change perhaps?
Lastly, Didn't Kyle Delahooke have a little something to do with LAST year's team success? He's gone (Playing at Navy)and so went the team?
Dear RonW:
I am currently not a coach but have coached in the past...I would imagine ANY decent coach would LOVE the opportunity to go up against one of the best as in Coach Welch to see how you match up? Playoff or otherwise.
From your comments it sounds like your coach wasn't looking forward to it?
How do you feel your team matched up with St Margarets and WHY the blowouts? You did have over 20 seniors, rights?
Will you be playing St Margarets next year?
Truth... What is your deal I mean your kindergarden name calling and all of that other crap your talking yes you whooped us and maybe you should have played that Barney stuff to your guys because it is the best you guys played. Yes you beat SG and good job for that but there are a couple things you guys at Alhambra have never done that the MATADORS have #1. Gotten out of the second round 03 finalist sg #2 Beat Santa Fe SG has twice
Time To Go Even Your FANS think so....
I attended the Maranatha game to watch a friend’s son play for Maranatha. Here are my observations:
1) It’s a great field, but a tough place to watch a game since half the seats in the home stands sit so low you can barely see over the players on the sidelines.
2) The Maranatha fans are great. They cheer loudly, enthusiastically, and constructively for their team no matter what the score.
3) The Maranatha coaches were very supportive of their team, never showing frustration and positively encouraging their team even when the outcome of the game was decided early on.
4) The St. Margaret’s coach showed no class when up 42-0 with less than a minute left in the half he called timeouts and ran trick plays to try to get another score.
5) St. Margaret’s could have won the game 84-0 if they did not lose their focus and let up in the second half. It is tough to stay motivated when you are up by that many points at half.
6) There is a huge gap in the talent and coaching strategy of the two teams. The screens that St. Margaret’s ran for huge gains and scores were well planned and executed. Maranatha had no answer for them.
7) #33 for St. Margaret’s was unstoppable. He could have scored at will.
8) Maranatha players never gave up and showed fortitude playing at full speed from beginning to end.
I too find some of the Maranatha blogger too touchy and preachy for my own tastes. I’d encourage these few folks to take the advice being given below and not be so overly sensitive to any negative comment. You have a fine school and a classy football team. Just be proud of them without being so quick to take offense.
No he was too tall.
Did Napolean attend Maranatha?
When I was young, I learned that the kids who got picked on were those who would react when picked on.
With that said, many bloggers have learned that when you pick on Maranatha, you will get a reaction, and some people no doubt think it is probably fun to get their dander up.
So if some Maranatha fans stay away from the preachyness and complaints about various things, and stop being reactive to every negative comment made in response to the certain postings of a few (you need to take the good comments along with the bad), all should be fine.
They had a good year. There is nothing wrong about being proud of your school, but sometimes it is how you say it.
And oh - anonymous - I truly hope you are not a parent - your attitude would destroy a kid in about a minute. If you are in fact an adult - you must have had a horrid high school experience if you need to be so negative on a blog that you know kids read. I would be so curious as to where you are from and you who actually support - but in the end I have better things to do than read your rantings
To tag on to what Ron W. said - we are very appreciative to Scott, the PSN and the writers that covered our games. We enjoyed our season and the coverage. We are a strong and proud group, we love our kids, we respect each other, and we appreciate our coach and his staff. While we sometimes got "preachy" on the blogs - we meant no harm. Congratulations to all the area teams for their successes and the lessons they learned that will serve them in the future.
"KNUCKLEHEADS"..."I will try to use smaller words"..."Tarpins"
...and Marantha fans wonder why they're so hated. Thanks RonW. for another shining example of that class you guys are so famous for (rolling eyes).
Scott -
Looks like a number of bloggers misunderstood my position when I said PSN failed to say anything about the Minutemen's turn around in the second half. It was a great second half for the Minutemen and I thought the local paper should have spent at least half the article on the local team.
However, it looks like the same group didn't understand my finishing with a sincere thanks for the coverage Maranatha received through-out the season.
So - HEY KNUCKLEHEADS - pay attention, Scott and PNR, we are very greatful for your coverage and photos! We appreiciate when Scott went out on a limb and picked us over Boron, and we wish we would have beaten St. Margaret's this season so we could still be playing and representing SGV football.
Read it slowly, twice if you have to, and I apologize to those of you I offended the first time. I will try to use smaller words and type slower next season...
Since we went out in the quarters this season, just like every other SGV team that made it that far - we ALL have problem areas and we ALL have things to work on next year.
As far as piling on Coach Murphy and his staff - stop and think for a minute. Coach Murphy is young and just getting started. In Alpha, the most competitive D13 league, he coached his team to a league title last year and came within a point of beating St. Margaret's in the CIF championship game. This year with a pretty beat up roster, and again the most competitive league, he got the boys into the quarter finals game - had a really horrible first half - but adjusted and shut down the Tarpin in the second.
What ever team you support, go ask your staff if they would like to play against Coach Welch, at any level, in a play off game.
The school's good, the program's good and getting better, and forgive the blogger that get a little carried away - read some of the blogs - they are a little defensive for a pretty good reason. Besides, wouldn't you really rather have a dedicated strong fan base than one that back bites and whines about their team and/or coaching staff?
We know what we need to do and we know where we are weak. We will get better in the future but I don't think we will tone down the support of our team.
Again, Scott and PSN, thanks for the coverage, thank you Minutemen for the good times, thanks Muir and Blair for all the exciting games as well -
Go Pasadena footbal, go SGV football and Go Minutemen!
Maybe Maranatha's Cross Country team could help their defense next year.
Anon
Why are you such a angry person ? Did your son not make the team or get to play? What ever the story I think you need to calm down. If you son does play for MHS than you missed a great group of guys and a very special team bond. If your son isn't on the team you really can't speak to peoples moral fiber. Any way I'ld hope you get over your anger 'cause being that angry only hurts you in the long run. To everyone else thanks for the support and a really great season.. win or lose this team was and is special..
...Hey, can't we all just get along?
MHS Supporter:
What did you expect. You hired a coach with no experience and come to find out he can't coach at the D13 level? Whose bad is that? Don't hate the bloggers who give it to you straight. Perhaps they want to remain anonymous for fear of your threatening coach who is calling bloggers out?
MHS fans,
I've never seen a more overly sensitive bunch in my life...Quit whining and running to Scott whenever anyone presents some vaild critisism about your coach...They all take heat . Your coach is not the only one. Perhaps like they say the truth hurts?
If you don't like it don't bother reading... The blog is for ALL to present their opinions. pros and cons. As long as it is clean and honest and not negative about the kids.
Why are your coaches on the blog calling bloggers out?
I didn't see any of you stand up for St. Margarets coach when you were bashing him ("dirty Harry"... "CIF investigation". . .?
How come no one has denied the apparent ugly truth about your coach. If you don't want to hear some honest opinions dont set him up for a fall?
You had an athletic team. Sounds like you matched up pretty well physically with St Margarets but got out coached. Accept it and move on.
MHS is no more moral or less moral than any other school. Give it a rest.
Hey Anonymous Coward,
Does your hatred for Maranatha come from some problems you have in your personal life. Your comments should clearly not be allowed on a blog like this one. We should be building these guys up, not tearing them down. That includes the coaches. What ever personal problems you have, don't take it out on others. Learn to look at your own self and do your best to correct any problems you have.
I don't know who you are as you could either be a student or an immature parent. Just keep those destructive comments to your self. Scott, I'm sure that the rest of us bloggers on here would appreciate your censorship of this kind of comment in the future.
Thank you all for a great season!
Hey Marantha fans.
All season you have preached what a moral giant your little coach is... but rumor has it he doesn't even speak to his own brother who also teaches at the school? Any truth in that? This sounds a bit hypocritical to say the least???
Now that isn't the type of character building/ role model I want my son to experience. There are better examples of brotherly love at your local public school!
is rudaflores finally going to retire, cuz hes been saying that for the last 3 yrs !ahs is bone dry of outstanding running backs , unless they get a couple of magical transfers in ,or some one gives the ahs coaching staff some addreses for a couple of kids from pasadena .but even if they do jr wouldnt know what to do with them .its a shame alhambra could be a powerhouse !step down oc stick to playstation !
Scott G,
"Santa Clara blocked Sean Kelly's next point to get the ball at the Lancers' 26."
I am sure that you meant to say that Sean TRACY's next PUNT. Sean Kelly was that great kicker for Monrovia last year. Lancer fans still jokingly talk about the Monrovia announcer saying, "Sean Kelly, Mr. Autoooooooomatic!"
Sean Tracy was a pleasant surprise this year kicking for the Lancers, with several long field goals, and consistent punts.
Observantcat: Don't go away too soon.
tc fan,
I agree with many of your points.
One thing Bishop Diego showed was a collegiate level of team defense pursuit, converging like pack dogs on the ball carrier, in ultra-aggressive, yet controlled fashion. Studying the film of how that was consistently done would be interesting. From afar, their D was not a physically threatening presence, but grouped, the squad was impressive. Obviously athleticism and on-field experience is a requirement to become that efficient, but drilling, the pounding of defensive responsibilties and a long term grooming of defensive fundamentals would need to be instituted and continued. Did you see many missed tackles? I can't remember one from the first half anyway.
What you run and do offensively and defensively has to align with your talent pool....and be tweaked in whatever direction will bring efficiency and success to you. However, you can't go looking for wholesale changes year to year. Their is ample history illustrating that approach falls on it's face.
Keys96,
Quit responding to bloggers and teach the LBs to tackle or get a new gig. 42 points in one half is pathetic.
Signing off to all the bloggers both positive and negative, It's been a fun season and very unpredictable, I would love to see more schools become more compettive in the SGV area, You see what happened to The Almight Mater Dei! Lowly Div. 10 Crespi (just 3yrs ago) made them look like a Div. 12 school(: I like the prospect of Monrovia being a much improved football team for the next few years to come. I hope that every team maintains a positive attitude going into the next football season. Their are still a lot of teams that are in the growing process therefore little can be judged on their upcoming season but if this area wants to improve on its image we need to stick to the x's & O's that we are taught in the pop warner divs. and gain our confidence in our freshman and sophmore years and become true varsity standouts. Thanks for the love and the harrasments....peace out! Till 2008
There is a coaching vacancy in Alhambra, or should be. Ruedaflores said in an interview a couple of weeks ago that this was his last year. It should be. It's easy to lean on guys like Babb(06'),Brown and Smith, but show me a player they actually developed.
COSMO
Your right about the game, I was there too and MHS did come out strong the 2nd half. Yes it was a little late and we lost. But I'm still really proud of our men. They had a hard season with many starters on the sidelines. But never once did they give up. maybe we didn't win the whole thing but the friendships and relationship built on this team will last a life time. In the big picture of life maybe that's more important than a ring. GOD bless you Football 2007 your the best. I beleived in you at the start of the season and I still beleive in you.. now go change the world..
I Will say this to all those who followed the Central Division and support teams there. There has and continues to be good play in the Central and Congrats to all the team from SGV that made the Playoffs. Now I must add the I told all that would listen not to sleep on the Colony Titans. Yes they are not the team of last year but they returned a lot of plays and the coach staff for the must part on back. I went to Muir Class of 86. My son plays for Colony # 18 Elon Wyatt and we have all the confidence that Colony will beat and Moreno Valley and make a STATEMENT To Colton. So again Great year Muir and PHS and all the area team, also good luck next season.
I'm not sure that the MHS hating anon saw the same game I saw. After a first half beating, the Maranatha Minutemen sinched up their jocks and went head to head with 1st string St Maggy well into the 4th. Maggy's coach, Dirty Harry, has a penchant for running it up. It was a good run (albeit too short) for an injury thumped MHS team.
Thanks, Scott, for the coverage.
And, yeah, RonW, #64, the Cazmeister, rules!
Well it is pretty clear where the Blair boys get their attitudes and sportsmanship from after reading the Truths responses. These young men will not ever make it in life if they listen to people like the Truth. Take your loss like a man and quit crying like a baby. Try teaching your boys a little discipline and they might actually go a little farther next time. To bad such good athletes have to be such poor sports.
did you guys see the la habra vs san gabriel video?
the part were the sg player goes
"COMMON!....THIS AINT OVER."
that broke my heart.
I'm so sorry abouth that Anonymous. Thank you for seting me straight. I hope Truth will read my message and take it to heart.
The Truth, whoever you are.. I don't know what to say to you. You know, everyone.. I honestly don't like the way The Truth always bangs around the SG Football Team. Ok, we lost to you guys, big deal. San Gabriel was over it the night we played you guys. The only reason why you keep pulling up the SG Loss to AHS is because thats the only card you have against us. Look at your embarrassing losses, always blaming it on something. We admit our losses, please just get the hell off these boards. You also don't have to have everything Caps Locked either, that's also getting annoying.
Your right, we did'nt do the things we needed to do to win, but my boys left everything they had on the field in the second half. But, if going 8-4 is embarrassing , then I'll be embarrassed every year. we fought hard through injuries and overcame most of them. Once again though, anyone who once to disrespect the staff I work with or my players can read the previous blog and contact me and we can talk about it like adults.
Dear Hunter,
I coach linebackers for Maranatha High School. If you have a problem with my team or the staff I work with, you can reach me at my email address johnkeys_2000@yahoo.com or call me at 310-291-4482. Whatever you do, don't ever think you can get away with disrespecting my team, my staff, or the school that I work for. We put as much work in as any other school, don't think that we hide behind our belief system. What you wrote was slanderous and ignorant. Yes it is a school that puts faith first, but it doesn't define every waking moment for us. It is apart of who we are, but don't think that it will keep us from getting this team ready for next year. Like I said call me if you have anything else you want to say about the Maranatha Minutemen.
MHS - You got your --- kick in the first half and second - they could have scored 80 on you if they left their first team in. Shut up and work on getting better. It is getting embarrassing.
Your reading the author of the posts wrong. I dont even know who "profit" or "Keppel" are. The guy posting about them is named "THE TRUTH".
Good luck with that tho.
Hey Honestly why do you keep bringing up Profit's name when he has nothing to do with San Gabriel. Last time i saw the guy he was on Mark Keppel side line or working in the stands doing his job as a CS. He is my friend. So talk all you want about others.
hey "the truth", this is a player from vc. and we didnt have bad calls? we had 2 touchdowns called back for very interesting penalties. and just because you couldnt stop our running back you have to hit him out of bounds like 5 times. you got penalized like twice. what calls went agianst you? blair blew it and the team is a bunch of babies. including there fans. sorry. who got game cancelled? you guys did
"Also, the PSN failed to mention that the Maranatha defense shut the Tarpins down and held them to a single score in the second half."
Most people can figure that a 42-0 half score and a 49-7 final score translates into 1 second half score for the Tartans. Complaining about the PSN coverage to the end. How nice.
MHS People, this man is correct, 100% right on the money, this is what makes the rest of us look bad.
PSN, thank you for your patience. SGV, good luck next year.
"PIG PROFIT" AND "DONALD DUCK" THE RING IS WHAT MATTERS ONLY THE RING !!!
42-18 YOUR HOMECOMING COMING WAS A "BLOW OUT" YOU SHOULD OF HEARD YOUR "FANS" IN THE PARKING LOT!!! THEY WERE SAYING THE SAME THING LAST NIGHT IN THE PARKING LOT....LOL ....LOL IT WAS THAT BUDDY HOLLY D' ...DONALD YOU STUDY BUDY RYAN BUT YOU LOOK LIKE BUDDY HOLLY ....AFTER SEEING THAT PICTURE OF COACH JONES ON THE SIDELINES HOLDING HIS HEAD ON THE WHITTIERDAILYNEWS.COM SPORTS PAGE I THOUGHT "DAM DONALD DUCK DID IT AGAIN"...
ALL I REMEMBER IS THE BARNEY "I LOVE YOU" SONG YOU GUY PLAYED DURING PRE-GAME AND THEN SLAPPING THE MASADORS AROUND ON YOUR FIELD ON YOUR COMING...SEE YOU NEXT YEAROR THE SAME OLD A$$ WHOPPING!!!..LIKE JIM ROME SAYS "GOOD NIGHT NOW!"..DUCK!!!
Hey Anonymous, were you at the same Blair game I was at? SO MANY bad calls were made, no wonder we were outplayed!! And as far a you calling our young men "thugs" it just shows how ignorant YOU ARE!!!! If you are that embarrased about being a Blair fan...DON"T!!! We really don't want you as a fan!!!
And you, captain of the VC team, if those BAD CALLS were being made towards you, maybe some foul langauage would've come from the christian boys! And next time you and your teammates try and grab some male genitals, we will swing on you again...we don't play that in DENA!!!!
And Finally, to all the Blair coaching staff and all the fine young men we call the Blair Foothball Team, JOB WELL DONE!!! What a great season! BE PROUD AND FIGHT ON!! Next season will be here before you know it! PEACE....
How nice.
I was embarrased being a Blair fan last night. We were clearly outplayed and we responded by acting like a bunch of thugs. Players being ejected, 5 unsportsmanlike penalties, numerous personal fouls, late hits out of bounds, game called early because of our players acting like fools and trying to start fights. Too bad a great season had to end on such a bad note, it really made our school and our boys look bad. Those of you who are trying to blame someone else better look in the mirror and hopefully we can come back next year with a little class.
Congratulations to all the players and coaches who stuck with it this year. The season is always to short and ends in disappointment for every team other than the CIF champion.
This is tough, though. I was hoping the WSGV would have representation from at least a a couple teams this week and maybe one team next week.
I'm with Stang Fan in hoping this area is able to make big improvements in football quality. I feel like establishing a coalition that will lobby for schools, players and coaches to get the support they need to develop into championship programs.
Scott,
Great blog, great forum and thanks for the coverage on the Minutemen this season.
St. Margaret's did their homework and executed their game plan in the first half.
The defensive adjustment by the Minutemen in the 2nd half came a little too late, but it should be noted the Minutemen moved the ball well in the second half with Robert Sharpe scoring on a great run up the middle. Also, the PSN failed to mention that the Maranatha defense shut the Tarpins down and held them to a single score in the second half.
All in all it was a great season with the players never giving up and learning much about team work and responsibility.
To the ocassional nut jobs that lash out at Maranatha and the other small schools - hey - c'mon now. Head on over some Friday night, have a meal with us, and watch some really entertaining football.
We're not Crespi or L.B. Poly, but we have a crazy mascot with a big giant head and an obnoxious dad with a really really loud horn.
Thank you Chris, Greg, David, Robert, Tom, Mark, Conner, Ian, Anthony, Jerod, Alex, Jon, all the the coaches, the Kares, that funny Finchamp guy, and all the others that will keep this program rolling, and a special thanks to that STUD #64 - for all the memories.
Lastly, thank you PSN and Scott Galetti for all the pictures and stories. See ya'll next season.
GO MINUTEMEN !
wow our local midvalley teams got beaten 166 to 72 , not so good i say
After viewing the 45-0 debacle at the hands of Bishop Diego, several thoughts come to mind for the future. Because turnovers are important, running backs must learn how to switch the ball from arm to arm while at full speed; when in doubt, most (80%+/-) first tackles come from the inside-out. All defenders: Learn to tackle; positioning and technique are critical. Always run to the ball; never assume someone else will make the tackle. Know the difference between a running down and a passing down; this will determine the best technique to use.
I thought using Williams Do as a running QB was a great Plan "B". Simplifying schemes to suit you team strengths, rather than team/game weaknesses, is the type of "out of the box" thinking needed against strong opponents. Don't be afraid to change.
Fortunately todays juniors, especially the DB's, will have next season to improve.
Thank you for a relatively successful season and good luck next year.
Just as I thought, Blair is the same as always. Just can't get it done, maybe its karma for the LC game. Good job TIP
solongfootball
You are a very sad little man. Why are your panties in such a knot? every small school wants some press not justMHS,Poly or RHP. Why do you care sooooo much? If it bugs you so much move on and don't read the blog. Just like you pull for your team they do for their team. So mellow out big guy and please get a life.
Just wanted to say congrats to all of the WSGV teams. All of you represented your schools and your families with heart and honor.........the season has just ended and I already can't wait for next season.
With that said, I must admit how frustrating it is to see all of these SGV teams bounced so early from the playoffs. I do not know what it will take to turn our misfortunes around. I know we've had a mass exodus of families leaving the area, but we have to do SOMETHING.
As far as Muir is concerned, one word sums up their issues........weightroom! WIth the athletes we have there is NO WAY we shouldn't be able to compete with these other teams in the playoffs, however, teams know exactly where to hit us and they just line up and get PHYSICAL with our front line. THere are some games, such as Arcadia, where we can still get away with it, but you can't sustain that for an entire season. If we ever developed a consistently strong front there is no doubt in my mind that we could return to our glory days. A message to all the Stangs.........get in the weightroom and STAY there!!! You guys have got a lot of HEAT coming back, hell, more than half of the starters were underclassmen. You guys have a really good shot at doing something special next year, but you need to realize that the season starts yesterday.
LET'S GO STANGS!!!
oh hey tip, the guy who is talking trash on valley christian. im on vc and sorry we dominated your boys. and none of that stuff happened. and i was captain last night and the officials told all players after another personal foul your out of the game. and every player from blair has a terrible attitude and cant fae the fact they lost. they all have terrible mouths and one player got ejected because he said he was going to kill the ref. so stop feeling sorry for yourselves. have good off season. and ps the game got cancelld with a minute left because they coulnt control themselves sorry.
San Gabriel 9-3 League Champs.
Alhambra 7-4 Also ran
You can't hide the fact that Alhambra seriously underachieved as they always do. Best talent in the league but no league championship and a first round exit. So so sad
59-14(LATE POINTS)
SAN GABRIEL VS. DIVISION 7 TOP 2 TEAMS
LA HABRA 59 SG 14
ALHABRA 42 SG 18
I THINK IT'S TIME FOR A NEW D'CORD AT THE "MASADORS"...
LIKE I SAID "NO" FILM TODAY DONALD DUCK...
Wow, why don't you tell us how you really feel SOLONGFOOTBALL? I am constantly amazed at how these forum's give people freedom to be rude, insulting and plain mean. At times they can bring out the worst in people and this is a case.
We got crushed, slaughtered and they were 100% a better team but SOLONG likes to rub salt into the wound. I agree, many, many of our parents can go overboard, they forget how small we are, that most of our players would not even play at PHS or MUIR and they can get an ego. I'm sorry if it insulted you.
But hey, they get into football and they love their kids. They get protective and are very proud of thier kids, but wait, as a parent....THATS THEIR JOB! To be thier kids supporters! They are supposed to brag, to point and say "hey, thats my kid" and be their son's #1 fan because the world is full of people like you who love to tear others down and everyone needs someone in their corner.
I dont have kids at MHS, and I beg the parents to not invoke Christ into this and I usually dont see it, after the start of the year they have behaved as well as many others on this board, some great and some, well...not so great, but again, in a world where many parents are absent its nice to see some who still care so much about theirs.
On another note no one screamed or cried that Star News (great paper) did not write up that MHS won CIF in girls CC, they also won Mt. Sac Invite with Coach McCown winning Coach of the Year. Today they are running at State ranked #1. I'll pray (if thats ok with SOLONG) =)
Lets breath easy, wait for next year and hope that SGV sends someone to the show next year.
SOLONG, I wish whatever team your for good luck, and that your soccer season goes well. I mean that sincerely, trust me, I know what your saying but since the season is over, please lets just let it go.
Get use to it with futbol taking over the SGV - this is the way it is going to be in the future and it is only going to get worse. Next year we will be lucky to have 2 teams from the SGV get out of the first round of the playoffs. Very sad.

Scott,
Thanks for a great job covering prep football among such a whiny group. While many share the blame, none were worse than the Maranatha supporters. Let's see, what will we miss most?
The "God is on our side because our boys are more moral than yours."
The "St. Margaret's team didn't play fair."
The "our coach is one of the best young coaches in the state."
The "We beat dreaded Rio Hondo 7-0 even though they have like 80 students and we have 600."
The "Why don't you give us more column inches of coverage? The mayor came to see our new field and lights."
I never thought I'd look forward to soccer season so much.
It may not have ended the way all our teams wanted, but congrats to them all for a great season.
dont we still have schurr
"Oh no! We suck again!"
