Behind the Scenes of the photo shoot

I know some just love to see a preseason schedule that offers the potential to arrive at league play with an unblemished, undefeated record. In the case of TC, I would prefer to see AT LEAST one bad ass powerhouse team thrown into the mix..like the 06 Mission Viejo game. Not just varsity, but even the freshman had a chance to see (and feel)the MV execution, get an up close look. A preseason game with Muir is one I think long overdue..and no, I have no delusions about TC having a team ready to challenge that squad. But I do think seeing and facing Muir's team speed in the preseason...would be great preparation for league matchups with Monrovia and Blair.
By the way, the freshman game was MV 50-0 at half, 63-0 final. The same freshman team, now at JV, were league co-champs this year. Tough kids. Getting your butt kicked by the best is no disgrace.
I've been a bit busy covering the sports that are going on, but I'll get to it. It's anyone's guess who will step up from lower levels. More of a crapshoot. Pasadena loses a lot, while Muir and Blair lose their top running backs. Both could make some noise though.
Goldenarm -
The answer is not easy - I have done internet searches for "league realignment" and "all Camino Real league", etc., and find few hits. I also checked Cal Preps and the CIF website for any updates. One of my internet hits took me to Cantwell's website, where they had their 2008 schedule listed, and where I deduced that St. Monica's is out of the Camino Real league and Bishop Montgomery (Torrance) is in for 2008. I know there will be other realignments, but I wonder how Cantwell got the news so quickly, along with a 2008 schedule? I know many in the area want to see how the CIF realigns divisions and leagues for 2008.
Scott's busy trying to figure out how we upset Pasadena in B'ball.
Scott gives us some info about next year football season.
I really want to know about the teams in Pasadena like Pasadena High, Blair, and Muir.
Please Scott let us know about next year. Especially on who to look for or who to watch come next year Football season,
goteamgo
great info
I've always wondered where and what could be the earliest source was to locate info on "next season" scheduling...maybe the answer is not so simple...
Thanks again Scott!
As a proud father, I appreciate seeing the selections!
It was a wonderful and exciting season.
Good luck to all the guys in their College careers.
LSFan: Every other league submitted full lists that we ran in the paper. I've requested the Alpha and Camino Real lists and was just given the locals.
Like I said, I can run just the local teams, but it's better to run the entire league.
But since you were nice enough to ask, I'll run them as is.
Thank you "goteamgo" for asking about the Camino Real All-league team. Ive been asking for weeks! Hope to see that before this blog gets cut off.
Also, is it possible to get the names of the players who made Honorable Mention? I can't make out the names on that small photo!
Thanks again "goteamgo", I appreciate you requesting the names also.
Just local team selections are fine for the Camino Real and Alpha league; good to follow the local kids. Also on Cantwell's website (always look at the competition!!!) they have their 2008 schedule posted. It looks like St. Monica's is out of the Camino Real league, and Bishop Montgomery is in. This leads to my next question - how is it that Cantwell knows the all-league selections, the 2008 schedule, and the league realignment (at least how it affects them) before the press does? Maybe the journalists of the world are out following the Britney Spears story? (Just kidding!!) The press was out-scooped by Cantwell!!
I suppose I can put the local team selections, but the other leagues provided full lists.
I noticed on Cantwell's website that they have listed their team players who are 2007 All-Camino Real League - I guess this means that the All-Camino Real League team has been chosen - when will we see it in the Star News? Ditto for the Alpha league - just to round out the list of local schools.
Scott, how do people get chosen for the all star game, and when is that announced? Also is it only seniors who play in the game or is it all years?
when is the all star game?
The only three kids for next year for the Pacific League are:
Todd Golper - Arcadia
Sebastian Valenzuela - Burroughs
#22 (RB) - Burroughs
other than those three I don't really know.
just noticed I can neither spell or type...Rose Parade brain edema and loss of motor skills...
Too many beauties wearing chaps and untold numbers of cheerleaders wandering at arms length...Marine Band can lay down a backbeat....even Vin Scully was checking it out
08 came in impressive
Anon 507
I can hang with the "fanatic" label - I may become advanced fanatic in 08..but you are correct the Pac league is not my thing...though I played in the old (ancient) Pac league many moons ago.
The Rams are not the RHL depository for raw talent right now - but they do have some players that are solid fundamentally and big time motivated already, hitting the iron already, adding power to their already primed mindset. IT IS THE KIND OF TEAM that draws me in...pretty blah on paper but hopefully one that will never quit, and never arrive thinking an ass-kicking awaits them. Too damn far in the future...I gotta go shoot the last of the egg nog and mellow out
goldenarm,
well, the jv had a decently successful year, and of the juniors on varsity this year were a decently talented bunch. the qb coming up is essentially another mike flynn: tiny, fast, with a strong arm, but might panic a bit too much under excessive pressure. however he will get some help from steven collieau, the wide reciever and the main player to watch out for. but overall, i cant tell how they will do. if there is going to be such a talented pool next year as there was this year, i dont see too much productivity. but if other teams lost most of their talent, then there could be a good chance at a .500 or higher season. my overall take on next year though, for the rio hondo league, id say monrovia wins it, with blair close behind (if this year wasnt a fluke), then tc, lc, sp and then sm. mainly sm last because ill be a tiger for life. haha. however, i dont know too much about tc. they seemed to have a talented bunch of seniors, and i didnt hear too much about their juniors or jv. and as i hear it, you are a tc fan. so do you think you could tell me about your take on them next year? thanks.
Ok then this a question for EVERYONE
Who are the players to look forward to watch in the Pacific League?
Everyone Please Answer
anon 7:20,
why would u ask goldenarm about the pacific league when he is a TC fanatic and thats in the Rio-hondo league???
Anon
As far as next year's prospects in the Pac League or anywhere in the SGV - I would hold off at least until the passing leagues start taking shape..to run down the whole league accurately at this stage would take someone like Scott G to interview/etc school to school....
109
The SoPas JV came to TC this year and their supporters nearly filled the visitor stands..impressive turn out, and always a good feeling for those players to hear that vocal support away from home. One of your big lineman went down with what looked like either a serious knee injury or broken leg - I think his dad came down out of the stands and actually helped him off the field. I hope the big dude has recovered. I saw alot of knee injuries this year - too damn many in fact.
How do you see SoPas varsity next year?
Goldenarm-
Who are the kids to look forward to in the pacific League?
goldenarm,
hey thank you. happy new year to you too.
ok he played middle for about two or three games. and yes, he was a good middle backer, but the fact that he was injured is my case. he only played lb for 2 games. maybe he came back and saw a little action every now and then, but you cant tell me that they shared the defensive spotlight like savage and allen. my whole case, however, is to have savage on the all area team. i know reasner deserves it, but so does savage, and to still do good while working WITH david. thats pretty incredible, no?
Scott
When does the list for Alpha league come out? It's kinda late isn't it thanks
109
happy new year bro, but sorry, Do played middle backer...starting at the Arcadia scrimmage...
ankle and shoulder injuries kept him MAINLY in the Offensive backfield, but he played D in most games..check the stat sheet
Scott,
I think that as long as Monrovia is in a lower division, we will always have a great shot at winning CIF. Whether or not we put it together is a matter for a New Year.
goldenarm,
that may be so, but do did NOT play backer this year. they kept him solely at rb, and there he thrived more than last year. an odd choice by the tc coaches in my opinion, but hey, he delivered. but no, reasner was the sole backer this year. and as i shall say again. he did NO better than savage, or allen especially
who are the players to look forward to in the RHL and Pacific League?
to everyone to answer please!!!
Anon 109
Reasner did share the linebacker spotlight...with Williams Do.(06 and 07)
Anyone who saw Do at outside linebacker in 06, would remember he was near perfection in that position. In fact, outside LB was where Do shined above all else.
to whoever is writing for me, i thank you for what your doing, and in almost all your cases i agree with you, but you dont have to do this. i doubt they can or will change their decision so its all kinda pointless, you know? but again, thank you.
Scott,
I guess it depends on what the criteria are. If it's who had the best year (stats, playoffs, etc.) that's one thing. If it's who is the best at their position then other things come into play.
It's always said that a QB gets too much credit for a win, too much blame for a loss. I've also heard it said that you can't control who you play with, or who you play against. If you ask...
Opposing DBs who they would least like to face (ask TC, Blair)
Players who they would most want in their backfield (including fellow B2Gers like Youngblood)
Who coaches think is the best (including your coach of the year)
THen other than Crockam who clearly deserved it, it is a no-brainer.
If you were looking for the best QB right now, who would best represent the area on the field (Rettig has the potential but he's not there yet), you got the wrong player.
So, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
Scott,
A no-brainer? Didn't Muir's QB have a ton of TDs and few interceptions as well as a Pacific League title?
Curious, the All-Area selections have nothing to do with league. They have to do with the whole season.
Valdez began the season fighting for the starting position. He was 15-of-21 for 269 yards and three TDs in his first start against Walnut.
The next week, head-to-head, Valdez 10-of-18, 200 yards, 1 TD; Troast 12-of-30, 75 yards.
Both QBs lost to Alhambra. Valdez 15-of-34, 170 yds; Troast vs. Alhambra, 8-of-23, 76 yards.
Vs. Keppel; Valdez 6-of-9, 144 yards, 2 TDs. Troast, 13-of-20, 151 yards, 2 TDs.
Vs. Temple City both QBs had solid games. Valdez 27-of-38, 308 yards, 1 TD in 41-20 win. Troast, 20-of-38 for 306 yards, 1 TD in 20-14 loss.
Vs. San Marino, Valdez, 20-of-35, 201 yards, 1 TD. Troast, 15 of 24, 179, 1 TD, 2 INT.
Troast, four games under 100 yards, including games against Hoover and La Canada. Valdez, no games under 100.
Once we get past all of these numbers, the bottom line is Valdez went from a kid that didn't know if he was starting to leading San Gabriel to a share of the league title.
He showed the poise in the pocket of a senior and made the right reads.
At the QB spot, he possessed the leadership skills necessary to carry a team on his back and posted nine wins. His losses came to 10-1 Eagle Rock, Alhambra and CIF champion La Habra.
His selection, in my opinion, was a no-brainer.
New York: Who knows if the RHL selections are political? Aren't all leagues political in some way?
And to answer your question about a CIF title, I'm not sure a West SGV football title is coming in the near future. Then again, who knows for sure how the area teams are going to shape up for next season.
Muir should be good. How good is anyone's guess. Blair could be OK with the young players they have returning. San Gabriel and La Salle will have their QBs back, but younger players to throw to. La Canada could turn some heads with all the returners it has coming back.
Why do you ask New York?
Scott,
Don't you work on Sundays???
Yea John Trawick! You are the man
While we're on the subject - how does a 5'7" 145lb. sophomore with 900 league yards become first team all area QB and a 6'1" 180lb. senior with 1100 yards and two 300 yard games not even get honorable mention? The kid has an incredible arm and picks apart secondaries as if he were in college which he probably will be as he is talking to more than one D-I school.
ftblfan,
Ok so tc allowed 11 less points in league. (which isn't even two touchdowns) and if sp had better kickoff coverage, not only would sp have allowed less, but sp wouldve beat tc and have gone on to playoffs. However, sp and tc mutually played San Gabriel and alhambra. You tell me the scores of those games. Mind you savage AND Allen were injured for the majority of the second half of the Alhambra game. And 14 points came from blocked punt and a fumble recovery, in which the sp defense could do nothing about. but I am straying from my original arguement of savage not making EITHER all area team while reasner, who had a similar season without having to share the spotlight with another star lb, is regarded as the rio honzo lb of the year AND makes first team all league. If savage gets absolutely no credit for his accomplishments, then I would disregard all of reasner accomplishments as well. Does my argument really seem so ludicrous? How does he not even get a 2nd team nod?
there is no question the TC "D" was vulnerable and porous - prone to repeated "big plays" from opponents. The premier showing of the Rams defense was against La Puente - it was almost a different mindset that night...extremely aggressive and positioned well throughout the game. Easily the hardest hitting game of the season for TC. Rams also played fairly good D against Blair, with the exception of allowing the big play once again
anon 1:09,
if u want to compare by points allowed, you lose. Pre-season does not matter because you guys do not play the same schools. And TC has a harder schedule than SP. League is where it counts and this is how many points both teams allowed in leauge
TC- 96
SP- 107
TC allowed less points than u guys in league
I wanna apologize for my snide remark against reasner at the end of my last comment. It was childish and unnecessary. He had a great season, just not as good.
big a,
What you say about team records is true, but that should go against tc and reasner. SP was a .500 team and tc was below, .417 to be exact. In fact, sp allowed 160 fewer points than the rams. And to make more of a fight for savage, the two games he saw little action in (Alhambra due to injury, Monrovia he missed the first quarter due to team rules) those games were the most points allowed by sp. In the first quarter of Monrovia when he wasn't there, mtown scored 20 points. However, reasner and the tc defense allowed 30 points a game. Almost double what sp allowed. Does that seem like a defense that has the defensive linemen AND linebacker of the year? Please...Allen and savage both blow reasner away...
anon 3:20,
there are alot of good players to look for next year. to name a few i'll say
Dietrich Riley, St. Francis
Chase Rittig, La Salle
Todd Golper, Arcadia
Josh Lowden, Monrovia
Raheem Broadnaz, Blair
Marquise Williams, Monrovia
Dwight Smith, Monrovia
Bobby Michael, Monrovia
Kendell Hollinquest, Blair
Josiah Thropay, Monrovia
Reuben Thomas, Muir
Anon 1:09,
If Savage and Allen were so great, then putting 250+ tackles together means either they had such a good defense that punished opponents and kept the offense on the field. It can also mean the opposite. It could be that they are on the field for too long, making all the stops which is what most linebackers should be doing in the first place.
I believe the second is the truth. South Pasadena's record does not help Savage or Allen for LB of the year or an all-area spot (although Allen got one for his 145 tackles). I haven't looked up SP record but if you have a 4-6 team or 3-8 team, they really don't deserve to have a player of the year when you have players of the same position have equal statistics and a better overall team record.
Sorry but thats the truth.
scott what about new yorks ? about which team in our area has the best chance @ winning a cif title
what are good players to look for next year?
he probably got mixed up in the "senority" stuff. But it shouldn't matter what grade a person is in, its the talent that matters
ftblfan,
What do you think happened? I assume Coach G showed up to the league meeting.
NY,
No one went to bat for Monrovia. If they did, we definately would've had more selections. AP of the year should've went to Patrick Greene. He did a great job at Linebacker, Long Snapper, and Tight End. Its also too political, because if it were by talent, Monrovia would've owned the all-leauge selections. Though Chris Carino, Josh Lowden, and Joe Vasquez are underclassmen, they shouldn't have gotten Honorable Mention and should've been 1st and 2nd team
well I will say something about reasners on of the year. It seems to me that tc runs the whole voting process, and is the reason broadnax made co-MVP last year with peterson which made absolutely no sense. Taking nothing away from broadnax but Peterson was on a completely different level. But the tc coaches seem to control it because David Allen was the clear and obvious choice for lb of the year. But to goldenarm or whoever said something about the tackles, savage had 3 4th down stops on his own and was a part of many others. He and. David were a part of countless goal line stops. He also had about 4 fumble forcing tackles and ran sidleline to sideline with some of the fastest running backs I've seen in high school. You HAVE to see his game film or a highlight reel of what I saw him do in the game.
Scott,
What's your opinion on how the Rio Hondo League "players of the year" shook out for the many awards they give? If TC had so many, why didn't they do better in league? Do you think the RHL must be among the most political when it comes to voting? If so, why would Co-Champ Monrovia have gotten hosed? Did nobody go to bat for/from Monrovia in the league meeting?
First off kiddies, I was going to make a comment and found a couple of players listed in wrong positions on the blog (Patton and Reasner). They are fixed now, so now I can make my comments.
Let's start with Reasner. He was Linebacker of the Year in the RHL. Whether his selection was political or otherwise, it's hard to discount that fact (I don't believe it was political).
He was also one of the players that stood out during the games I saw. Patton was a monster, who also stood out, and was the Defensive Lineman of the Year in the Pacific League.
Eric Becher was co-Defensive Lineman of the Year in the RHL. I think if anyone should have a gripe about not being first team, if should be the other co-Defensive Lineman of the Year Bobby Michel from Monrovia.
These guys played against much tougher competition than Maranatha did.
It's hard to say this on the high school level, but the game's actually faster in the higher divisions, and the players are much bigger in most instances.
Vander Laan was impressive and is worthy of the second-team.
By the way, Finchamp's selection as punter was based on the fact that he was the best kicker I saw this season, and there were some good ones.
If he wants to, he can kick at the next level, both place-kicking and punting. He knows how pin opponents deep in their own zone.
It is a tough argument to come out against the selection of Joe Reasner.
Opposing teams - upon game film review made comments on the number of times his solo tackles prevented many potential big plays from springing. He had tremendous instinct and field vision - rarely was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was an impact player in 06 and 07...even though banged up in 06. Taking nothing from Savage - I just don't see Reasoner being bumped.
Dear friends,
Does anyone have a list of the names of the players who made Honorable Mention?
I can't make out the names online and I live out of the area, so I didnt see the paper.
Also,
What happened to the, "All Camino Real League" selections?
Thanks for your help!
The holidays have kept me away from the blog - but now that I had a moment to read the comments I have to say I am also a bit disappointed with the "non-selection" of more Maranatha players - as well as David VanDerLaan being named to the second team. David was very deserving of a first team spot and Scott you blew it big time. The small schools don't get the attention that the big boys do once again - although I was happy to see Trevor Finchamp honored. Surprised that St. Margaret's was shut out in their area - sorry for the players - not the coach - I did not care for his style at all.
EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!
Who are the kids and teams to look forward to watch nexy year?
MHS fan;
I am a St. Margaret's parent and we didn't have any kids (including Hunter Steffien) make the OC Register team. In fact, we were ranked 25th in the county by the Register BEFORE we beat Brentwood by 31 points. After that game, we dropped out of the Top 25. Figure that one out - LOL
After 2 undefeated seasons, 2 CIF Championships, and the longest winning streak in California (28 games), you would have thought we would have cracked the Top 25. We also had some incredible stats per maxpreps.com for the entire country.
That being said, newspaper writers and pollsters have a terribly hard job when it comes to rating the small schools...who knows how good they really are and how good their opponents are? In the end, kids don't go to Maranatha or St. Margaret's for the football. Sure, it's part of the school...but just a part. These schools will never get the football press/hype that bigger schools get. They don't deserve to and, quite frankly, I'm just as happy they don't.
My kids have had a wonderful time at St. Margaret's and Maranatha appears to be a wonderful school. The development of the entire student in a close knit community is well worth any lack of press clippings.
Good luck to you next year...and cut Scott some slack - LOL.
Scott G,
When are teams from the WSGV gonna start winning CIF Titles?
also, TC allowed 160 more points then SP. that doesnt happen for no reason...
scott,
if what you say is true about the tackles, then what about joe reasner? he had a very similar season to savage. they both had two takeaways (savage 2 fmbl rcvry, reasner 1 fmbl rcvry 1 int). and he only had more tackles because of two extra games. on top of that, that whole thing about being on the field a lot should go against david allen from the same team, should it not? i dont mean to attack you or anything, so i apologize if it seems that way, but jesse is a good friend of mine and had a all area-worthy year regardless of my biased opinion
Anon 1:09: I respect your opinion. Savage had a nice season. But who are you going to take out on the second team to make room? Just having a lot of tackles can be misleading. Two players from a 3-8 Sierra Vista team are in the top 10, including the No. 1 player in tackles. All that means is that they were on the field a lot, not necessarily the top players.
troast or rettig?
Nothing at all for #11 from SP? yes kendell from Blair had a great year and might have beat him out of first team, but to not even make the second team? I find that slightly rediculous... Cmon scott
MHS Fan: Which Blair and Alhambra players are we talking about? If the Blair player is who I think he is, one, he played in 10 games since they had a game canceled, and two, his stats don't show what he did in his last game. Since there is no Alhambra linebacker listed, I'm not sure where you're going on that one.
To make a point, stats are nice. There is a player from Alhambra who had the same amount of tackles as Flewelling and he wasn't on the first or second teams either.
Did you see the Blair kid play? If you did, I don't think we'd be having this discussion.
Anon932
I do not disagree with you.
The RHL shows no great promise of becoming more respected either, although the emergence of Blair this season was a positive.
I can't believe "Red Neck" Rich Wheeler didn't get any votes for coach of the year.
Scott,
The stats are for tackles and sacks Tom Flewelling had 116 tackles and 3 sacks more the players from alhambra and blair. So maybe your right about a small school all area, sicne it seems the smaller schools get overlooked. We do have kids with stats the are just a good but seemed to get over looked because of our division. It is what it is. so let stop pretending that being from a lower division doesn't matter . Which in the long run is ok . Because after all the are students first, then football players.
Scott
i think you might be right since there is alot of talent in a small area. so maybe the smaller schools should have a different list. something for you to think about. There are mamy small school fans in your readership so maybe next year.. As far as stats i'm talking about tackles and sacks..
MHS Fan: I'm aware of those two players being good leaders off and on the field. This is about the top players in the area. When you talk about stats, what stats are you talking about as it relates to those players? At what positions? There were some talented players left off the first team from higher divisions. I suppose the fairest way would be to have a small-school all-area team. I don't think you realize how much talent there was in the area this season.
Hey Goldenarm-
Other than Monrovia and occasionally TC ( and this year Blair) what teams from the RHL are any good year after year? The reality is it is a weak league. Proof of the pudding is that SPas could barely beat the Glendale teams and they are the perennial doormats of the Pacific League. Calpreps is the closest we have to doing power ratings of the leagues. RHL does not even come close to the teams from the leagues that placed players on the All-San Gabriel Valley team from the LA Times
You losers (Muir)! Nobody won CIF and yawL. Crying over what? Straight “BUSTERS”! My people will over come anything! Put that don’t know what said book! F- Muir
They are welcome to my house!
SCOTT-
WHO ARE THE PLAYERS AND TEAMS 2 LOOK FORWARD TO NEXT YEAR?
Stang Fan,
We can only hope that those two players would have still developed into the ballplayers they are now if they had stayed home.
Regarding the eastside scheduling: I can't figure it out. West Covina and Diamond Ranch don't seem to be afraid of playing anybody. South Hills schedules tough games as well. Los Altos seems to schedule a couple tough teams and a couple lightweights. CO typically gets their tougher games from the IE area.
Yes, those comments were very telling. I hope Fred and Scott can stir things up a little bit.
I have no idea how the rest of the valley or southern section view Muir. I personally have not been over to Muir in quite some time. However, I think that the Muir posters should refrain from calling yourselves an "innercity school." (Remember that conversation a couple months ago?) Innercity schools typically do not field the type of disciplined football teams that advance deep into the playoffs. Those later round teams are the ones that good teams want to play in the preseason.
I found it quite interesting that the player of the year award from the ESGV came down to two kids from the WSGV: Dorian Wells (Monrovia) and Kanaan Snowden (Pasadena). I know that I beat this topic into the ground, but MAN does that drive me crazy.
By the way NY I just read the back-and-forth you had with that guy over in the ESGV blog about teams scheduling Muir.....quite telling wasn't it. That type of mentality just infuriates me. And when Fred admitted what other coaches and administrators have intimated to him my jaw dropped. What, do people think we are "Eastside High" from "Lean on Me?" Is that really the perception of Muir? Am I just naïve? Or is that just the excuse people use to not play us? Why would a lily-white, rich, Christian school like Oaks Christian not mind playing us and visiting NW Pasadena and others would not? Frustrating......
Scott
my point is that Maranatha had another good season going to playoffs and having a better record than some of your top teams yet no first team. Ithink you miss my point that while these schools are smaller that PHS , etc they are no less deserving. They work just as hard and do have the stats to prove it . And most of the guys play both ways the whole game. What would Vander Laan's and Flwelling's stats be if they played one way with a supporting cast.. Both would have made any local team and started. Just a thought for next years teams. maybe the whole picute should be looked at and a plus both are great students with leadership on and off the field.
Good question, Goldenarm. I bet few could have predicted the change at TC last year.
Scott
any SGV head coaching changes anticipated for 08?
MHS Fan: All three players are solid players, and I was impressed with Vander Laan, thus the second-team selection.
Scott,
how about David Vander laan or Tom Flewelling for first team and maybe Mark Love for 2nd team.
mhs fan, who do you think should have been picked to the first team?
Scott you didn't answer my question about whu some of the smaller schools didn't get any first team pick ( finchamp the exception) I'ld like to know what these kids need to do. because many do have good stats and play for teams that had more wins then teams on your top 10 list.So please do share..
Regarding the Times Poll...Not a single RHL player even flung a morsel on the Honorable Mention team?
Maybe no exposure and premise of league weakness?
I'm just afraid that creating a WSGV CIF division would insulate us too much and not allow us to gauge ourselves against other areas. At the very least, make it an all inclusive SGV division. Picking week 5 is just a thought to mitigate the problems we would face with trying to have a game after the season.
Maybe we just need local coaches to create better schedules. Arcadia seems to be the barometer these days because they play the Pacific League plus St Francis and Monrovia. If we had more teams doing that it would create better discussion.
Since everyone is chiming in – why is the most talented "pure QB" in the area, Jonathan Troast of South Pas, not even making honorable mention at this position? Crockom clearly deserved POY but though Rettig and Valdez are talented, they both have work ahead of them if they are to develop to the level that Troast is already at: Rettig has as strong an arm but needs work on mechanics and footwork; Valdez (if his arm develops) has to be able to make all his throws. And besides they are both sophomores with two years left to prove themselves.
By the start of league it was clear that South Pas’ running game had collapsed so every team they faced knew they were going to get passed on all night long. Despite this, Troast threw for almost 1100 yards in league alone, including 300+ yard games against Monrovia and Blair. And he did a lot of his own play calling (when was the last time that happened?) while picking apart defenses along the way. Ask league DBs and coaches who they would least like to face? I bet it won’t be these sophomores.
Nice to be named first team punter--I guess--but to not be recognized as one of the top QBs in the area (the best the RHL has seen in years according to an opposing coach I spoke with) seems crazy.
I know I am a little biased having watched Troast all season, but in my humble opinion you missed this one.
cmon ny, lets not turn our football into the bcs by letting a third party choose our matchups for us in the middle of the season no less!
I join those in thinking it would be fun for a West SGV Division to be created. It would be great for local bragging rights at the end of the season.
FWIW , the LA Times just came out with its ALL San Gabriel Team (includes West and East SGV)

Great idea. Every team should leave week 5 open, and the Star News rankings would determine who plays whom in week 5.
Once again, we need to roundup the best teams in the west sgv and create a West SGV CIF Division!!!
Let these rivalries and debates actually play out on the field!!!
Scott, what do you think about that?
Even the best coaches choke sometimes, like when USC lost to Texas. Why was Reggie Bush not even on the field for the fourth and one that gave Texas the ball back?
Huck, What do you call that offense? THe run&shoot or the chuck&duck? If bingo threw the ball 80 times a game his stats passing would've been like "T". Truth be told Trump wanted to be a STANG anyway but you wanted to try and get the bell through him that you could'nt get as a slow overrated DB in the 80' Should"ve sent him to Muir so you could ring the bell once in your life.why don't you try play 9524 LOL.
One theme questioned all year on this blog has been COACHING.
Anyone who has ever had "Coach" preceeding their name knows the difficulty, expectations, hard work, elation and bitter disapointment that come with the title.
The highs lift your feet off the ground - the lows stick with you, long afterward...years afterward. It is pretty clear at the prep level, money is not the primary motivator for a coach to coach.
Like most jobs you need to hire the right people, who in turn hire the right people. These people promote improvement internally and bring additional quality individuals into the mix. Pretty soon around you are individuals with differing strong points and background - and all have the same goal - success. It clearly benefits the kid - who lands in the best program possible. If you don't feel good about where your son or daughter is playing - it is up to you to do something about it.
Good luck to all area teams next year - like NY said, there is no offseason- work hard.
New York,
To finally answer your question. I believe in a way the Arcadia coaches did get outcoached which was in someways a first for them since they are known to be pretty good ones.
I also believe that Arcadia just did not come mentally prepared. From all that jibber-jabber about the fires, not practicing, questions about the game, etc... that probably got into their heads and just weren't ready to play. It's no excuse because they did get outplayed (shows in the score) but I think mentally the boys just weren't ready which lie at the coaches.
For those pushing smaller schools for all-area: When a team playing in the Central Divison or Western Divison? (Wherever St. Francis plays in) you are playing against a DRASTIC jump in talent vs. the division that Maranatha plays in. Regardless of stats, many of these kids put up big numbers against more legitimate programs.
With Muir's situation, I think it was very hard to put them in places. Willie seemed to secure his spot with 19 touchdowns I believe, but for the rest its hard because their statistics weren't HUGE, yet each player had an impact when they played together. As a team, they deserve the #1 spot but individually, I believe they could have gotten one more spot but it's not up to me.
Thanks for the great season everyone!
I'm here to help New York.
Scott G,
The most important suggestion I have is to always keep a football-related thread at the top of the blog. Supply and Demand... Besides, it is easier to check on a Blackberry.
Happy New Year.
Scott
Good job on the selections
You guys at the Star News have been mistaken all year. I believe Raheem in a soph. Which is even better.
Next year he will be a jr. and will carry the load for the Vikes.
Stang fan -
Not putting TC in your top five (RHL) that is - makes since. We don't look particularly devasting based on anything used to eyeball a team's future potential. I think in fact, your estimation may be echoed by others at time of season start next year. Wildcats are without doubt the clear RHL pick for me, based on what I saw at their house this year. IF and big IF that is, they can smackdown their RHL competitors, I would love to see the team travel into the CIF and make a mark for the SGV.
First the RHL.
The Rams may lack a marquee player next year, but they have a core of solid athletes ascending to varsity. These include some beasts on the line and great "hands" players. Returnees include a handful of key defensive starters as well as Josh O, who will anchor a bruising O-line. Backus has already hit the ground running as far as motivating this group.
For the Rams 08 will not be a "rebuilding" year.
Anon 1:15 a.m.: The least you could do is put a fake name or something. :)
Volleyball has its own post now, so if you have a team, let's see it. I can't wait to see your choices, but I'll stand by mine.
My putting up the stats wasn't to justify the picks. It was a way to answer Get Real's earlier question about what happens when they played against good teams.
how can a kid have 15 sacks and not be on any team.
The volleyball selections are an even bigger joke! Why even have an all-area team if the best players aren't chosen? Perhaps it can be called "Coaches Choice" or "All-Area Favorites."
Huck,
You know we are going to be better than you guys right? I mean for real. You know that right? You know it's going to take you another few years before you guys have another .500 season right? I mean you aren't that ignorant. WHO do you guys have? Names please. Not this freshman or that sophomore......names bro. Exactly. Look the Tussle IS NOT a rivalry. Your bro said as much. You have got to win sometimes, not make it close sometimes. Our league will be weak next year so I predict a 4-6 or 5-6 campaign for you guys, which will make it four straight years of failing to climb the .500 mark. Bottom line..............football players go to Muir and b-ballers go to HS. Look bro, just jump on Tuck's bandwagon and run with it, cause really that's all you guys have got.
I know, it hurts me too, we used to have a damn good b-ball program. But hey, so is life.............get used to it.
HUCK
you sound crazy bro,I really don't care about the Muir players I was talking about all the schools.I believe PHS got single out because your team had too many players that made it for the wrong reason.Like I have been saying Scott G can't have it both ways,if you want to base it on talent why is Troy Ahmaz on the first team..There are three other
backs way better than him and have better stats, that's why I said you can have it both ways.Oh yeah let me answer your statement about the bowl which makes know sense..If the passing game was working so good your telling me your bro had a great idea let's RUN..and you said he is a great coach huh..keep it real bro
The stang fans states all truth
Muir is going to be number all because most of the team were lead on both sides by playmakers that were underclassmen muir still has weapons like Ruben Thomas, Marcus Graves, Mitchell Gardner, Fernando Aguilar, Chris Dunlap, And Myles Cambell. These are the kids who going to keep the Muir tradition on winning.
M-cats I can see them having a good next year
Blair I believe there still going to be a treat to watch with Rahieem the junior tailback leading the way
SF is also going to have a good year all eyes would be a Riley
La Salle has a Qb that's going to light up scoreboards before he's done
***Burbank Bur is going to be the X factor lead by the OL Sabastion
Hucky,
Steve Smith and Chad Johnson went to Santa Monica. PCC is a good option, but too many people form pasadena around might weigh him down. He should get out of Pasadena and experience something different.
Finally another rational poster. Welcome back, Stang Fan. Muir and Monrovia must has phenomenal coaches to be able to finish league play with championships against teams with so many more first teamers....
Oh, and another thing “Anonymous” more players will start coming out! PHS has finally given them something to come out for! I know the Pacific League wanted my bro to be out, but things are about to get thick! I know the Muir people want him out too, but he is set on making this a rivalry again and once he set his mind to something it’s pretty much done! Go Dogs! Great season for all the kids!
Anonymous,
I think Owens is a good player too, but if he was that good why didn’t Muir coaches get him the ball? See, let’s look outside the box; Muir had a thousand yard rusher, so you would think they could have a least a thousand yard receiver in Owens? Oh, Muir couldn’t pass! We (PHS) passed the ball and we did it well, unfortunately we needed the rest of the team to be doing as well as the “O”!
Yes, my son will be attending a junior college and it could be (PCC, Santa Monica or Mt. Sac) it just depends on the style of offense. He needs to mature and put more focus on his academics. JC is a great option to have and I hope you wasn’t down grading JC, because “O.J” won the Hiesman!
Yours truly!
if ahmere owens woulda played in a pass-happy offense like phs he woulda been the best player point blank and woulda had 1600 yards with 18 td's
I was out of town yesterday and didn't get my copy of the paper. Which prep league players got Honorable mention?
Were are all these PHS kids playing at next year? PCC?
Huck, your bro needs to think out side of the box in terms of oaching. He has tons of resoucres around him. Sometimes the "homies" aren't the best to work with.
Also, Mills should try to tap into the schools talent. There's tons of armenians and latinos that could probably make a huge impact.
I don’t have any problems with adding more player of the year honors, but to have players make it because they won league wouldn’t be a great formula either. Florida’s QB Tivbo, won the Hiesman trophy, because he had stats! His team had 3 losses and didn’t play in their league playoff game. A matter of fact the top two candidates for the Hiesman were on teams that did not compete for their league title, which would make your point “nothing”! I hope your not one of those delusional people that went to the Tussle and said they (Muir) stop our passing game, because that was done solely by the head coach of Pasadena High! My Bro……He went to the running game in the 2nd half and shorten the game on us and actually bailed Muir out! My son dropped some tough but crucial passes in the first half, but was never covered! Arness didn’t make 1st team offense, because in the Pacific League voting process the players can’t make offense and defense 1st teams. I thought Arness should have made co-player of the year with “T”! He ran back kicks, interceptions and receptions for touchdowns in almost every game. PHS went further in the playoffs than Muir did which was the Pacific League Champs. My point? Exactly, the same point you made in your posts! Nothing! If you missed the last post, Trump 10th and Arness 13th in the “Southern Section”! You can’t take that from them! Was any player from Muir in any top 10 categories in regards to the “Southern Section”? Thank you!
Huck,
You said no QB was better than "T" personally I agree with you, but it's not about us there should be a system to follow. The QB from San Gabriel didnt have as much passing yards as "T" but his team won a league championship. But hey, ill give you "T", but the two WR? c'mon bro were they really unstoppable? askin Muir's DB's I dont think so. How can Arness get 1st Team Star News WR when he didnt even get 1st team All Pacific League WR? doesn't make any since. All im sayin is Scoot G tried to give every school a fair shake on the team but when it came to PHS he tried to play the talent and stats card. They cant have it both ways, i'll definately understand if PHS had a CIF championship, at least a LEAGUE TITLE!! I think Scott G should have made an Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player Of the Year, and Offensive Linemen Player Of the Year, it would have easily gave the team 4 or 5 more players.
Stang Fan,
I would have never transferred my son from HS and nor did I say my brother lost the games. I think he could have picked a better supporting cast of coaches or at least place them in the correct positions to help the kids. Muir coaching was not good either, so don’t get on that high horse. As for as next year “PHS’s” team is better than this years 6-6 squad, so you need to watch your mouth. We had a freshman tailback fill in nicely in the playoffs and he played linebacker with stellar performances. There were 6 more sophomores that step up as well, so that gap in the Pacific league you were talking about is a mirage!
Muir was not a good team! I know, yawl beat the Dogs, but the Stangs were terrible! Through our coaching we gave you "Bums" another gift! Start saying, "THANK YOU"! It's a shame to see you dummies walk around with your heads held high!
It is kind of wierd that the 1st place team from the Pacific (Muir) has only two players on the All-Area first-team and the 2nd and 3rd place teams from the Pacific (Arcadia and PHS) have a combined 9 players on the All-Area first-place team. A little odd............
Miketev,
You hit the magic point! They ran all over the defense for being out of position! As far as the Arcadia game if the head coach just worried about scoring and not the “D” coordinator stopping Arcadia we would have won that game in a shoot out! PHS had 4 offensive players make 1st team! They didn’t have 4 defensive players make it and did you see what Scott stated, Harrison 10th in the “Southern Section” for receiving! Ikner 13th in the “Southern Section” for receiving! T. Crockom 6th in the “Southern Section” for passing with 800 yards rushing! PHS played against better schedule than both Muir and Arcadia, so I’m trying to figure out; who should the receivers and QB have been in regards to the 1st team? That’s 3 people right there and for the lineman that made it, was well deserved, because for those players to have those stats we had to have some type of great line play. Oh, the “Southern Section” means all the divisions combined! People, PHS lost on coaching!
Scott,
I do NOT envy you whatsoever in having to pick these teams. It is an extremely difficult task and anyone who criticizes couldn't do much better. Of course I think Muir should have more players but hey, it is what it is. However, I do have somewhat of a problem with you listing Daveon Samuels as a LB and Bingo as a DB. Sameuls was a beast at DT and could literally replace any d-lineman on this list and Bingo was just a spot DB brought in only on special occasions. All three DB's from Muir that you put on the Honorable Mention deserve a spot on the defensive side over Bingo. Other than that though, good job.
Huck,
Get over it bro! Scoreboard, scoreboard, scoreboard!!! You are the ONLY person out there that believes HS was the best team in the area......and trust me NO ONE believes for a second that HS was even a great team. At the end of the day HS is an on-the-field 6-6 third place Pacific league team with no bell or league patches, let alone any rings. You guys lost six games on the field dog, that does not comprise a good team, let alone the best in the area. I'm tired of hearing about how TERRIBLE your coaching was. If the coaching was so bad why didn't you transfer your son, it's not like you didn't have the "inside" on how HORRIBLE a coach your brother was. Truth is, blaming the loss on yuor bro is a cop out and you know it. Muir is just the better team and it hurts your brain to even fathom that thought, which you know is true. And it isn't getting ANY better for you all in the next couple of years, and I know that just KILLS you!!!
Blog,
Just a head's up.....next year's Pacific league is going to be atrocious. You'll have your usual bad teams in Hoover, Glendale, CV, and Burbank, but Arcadia and PHS will also both drop big time next year. Muir and Burroughs should fare quite well and unfortunately head into the playoffs without much competition to prepare them for the most important part of the season. I'm glad to see Muir was the top team for the third year in a row and I predict a fourth for next year.
Next year's Top 5:
1. Muir (A lot of underclassmen played significant minutes---reloading as usual)
2. Monrovia (The youngsters step it up)
3. SF (Will be good, but if their scheduling doesn't change it will be more of the same.)
4. Blair (They did have a lot of Sr.'s but they had some impact young guys that will contribute next year.)
5. La Salle (The young QB should have a good year.)
i'm by no means downplaying the individual play of harrison and ikner - i did see that arcadia game - and they did put on a show. i did also see how arcadia ran the same play, over and over, and over, and over, again to ahmaz and ran all over phs. phs could not stop the run.
and you're saying that your players missed hoover and glendale? "stat game?" Cmon. I'm not sure how PHS does it but i sincerely doubt Muir and Arcadia played any of their starters more than half that game.
Huckster,
I didn't see many games this year but i did see Arcadia v. PHS. Arcadia smoked PHS and I doubt that they'd even call themselves the best team in the area. How could you say PHS was the best team in the area?
Get Real,
Who in the area won something? No one! Your point is? Exactly! Nothing! Muir got put out in the first round by a lower seeded team! The rest of the area all made it to the second round and only “PHS” had a real chance at winning their second round game, only to miss the 2 point conversion that was right in the tight ends chest! Just wasn’t meant to be! I still think we had the best team in the area……
Okay Boys,
First of all “PHS” shouldn’t have lost any games! Maybe Dominquez and I mean maybe! Pasadena lost all their games on coaching! And coaching alone! Pasadena by far had the best talent in the area! Muir shouldn’t even be whispering a word; because of our poor coaching we kept you sorry bums alive to make you feel like your something! There was no way we shouldn’t have won CIF!!!!!! I know football and none of these defensive secondaries in our area could have stop Pasadena’s passing offence! Period!!!!! Tyron had 38 yards in the first game of the season, so if start off passing from the start he would have had 3,000 passing! Trump missed the Hoover game which is a stat game and would have had over 1,300 yards. Arness would have over 1,200 if not for the first game. I understand how some worthy people were left off, but honestly; no QB was better than “T” and no wide receivers were better than Trump and Arness! William Walls was a solid left tackle which protects the back side of the right handed QB. Trey Carpenter was second team and displayed penetration all season long for an under sized “D” lineman. Stop whining!
Scott
I too am a little curious as to how phs has so many players on 1st and 2nd teams without really winning anything. I understand Maranatha is a d13 team but we went to the playoffs both last year and this year , and had a better record than a few teams on the top 10 list. Did you not think any of our players had good stats cause I went on max prep and compared them with some of your 1st team and they are better in some cases. So if stats and wining are how you pick the teams I beleive you may have missed the boat. In the end it's your list so I'll thank you for our one player on the 2nd team... David Vander Laan who's a great kid and hoping to play at the next level..
real,
points well made.
maybe the answer is a POSTING OF CRITERIA, a loose doctrine outlining the selection process.... or any such written outline on how players are selected.
I had some of the same thoughts you mention, among others - which all contribute to complicating, rather than simplifying the selections.
Either way it is no easy feat.
De-mystifying the selection process would be a win-win. At first glance I thought Galetti's picks were very good. Hopefully the comments here will be used constructively, should an opportunity for improvement be at hand.
Scott G. Im glad that you made your comment, but let me give you a piece of my mind also. If this team is suppose to be about the best talent, and you want to use stats, can you please explain how Willie Youngblood & Troy Ahmaz are the two runningbacks, when clearly Devin Fuller (9.1 avg)and Dushine Smith (8.7 avg) average more yards per carry than any other back in the area. I can understand how you put Willie above them because of what his team accomplished. In saying this how can PHS have 5 players on the team when they didnt win anything, you cant have it both ways. Its either the best talent period, or be fair to all schools. personally i believe Devin Fuller should have been the MVP for what he did as an individual and what his team accomplished. But what you are saying is, as long as you pump your stats up & your team is losing its ok your still the best player in the area. In that case Kobe Bryant should have won 4 MVP's. Winning has to count somewhere. Crockom by far is the best QB in the area but there is no reason for PHS to have 5 players on the team and there still not winning, it doesn't make any since. and in case you think im bias i am a graduate of Pasadena High 1990 Keepin it REAL!!!
Kendall Boggs should be the real deal next year for monrovia that's if he decides to stay or pursue a hs that provides better coaching.
Scott,
You could end up on the Suicide Hotline if you figure into the selection process too much.
ARCADIA HAS DA MOST ALL-AREA PLAYERS!!!!
This list was all about attempting to pick the top players.
I'll answer Get Real's question this way.
Against the top teams:
Ikner: Finished 13th in the Southern Section and third in the area in receiving.
Dominguez: 95 yards, 2 TDs.
Arcadia: 122 yards, 2 TDs.
Burroughs (which beat Arcadia): 80 yards, 1 TD.
No. 2-seeded Chaffey: 162 yards, 1 TD.
Canyon Springs: 102 yards, 1 TD.
West Ranch, a team that held Canyon, which beat Crespi, to 10 points: 148 yards, 1 TD.
Harrison: Finished 10th in the Southern Section and second in the area in receiving.
Dominguez: 145 yards, 1 TD.
Arcadia: 194 yards, 1 TD.
Burroughs (which beat Arcadia): 98 yards, 1 TD.
No. 2-seeded Chaffey: 156 yards, 3 TDs.
West Ranch, a team that held Canyon, which beat Crespi, to 10 points: 88 yards, 1 TD.
Javier Miranda, by the way, was sixth in the Southern Section and No. 1 in the area in receiving.
Crockom: Finished sixth in the Southern Section and first in the area in passing.
Dominguez: 296 yards, 3 TDs.
Arcadia: 436 yards, 4 TDs.
Burroughs (which beat Arcadia): 214 yards, 3 TDs passing, 145 yards, 1 TD rushing.
Muir (a defensive struggle with dropped passes): 133 yards, 1 TD.
No. 2-seeded Chaffey: 402 yards, 5 TDs.
Canyon Springs: 218 yards, 2 TDs.
West Ranch, a team that held Canyon, which beat Crespi, to 10 points: 335 yards passing, 2 TDs, 97 yards rushing.
Let's face it, there were a lot of quality players in the area this season that were worthy of first team.
But if you're going to single out Pasadena, what Crockom, Ikner and Harrison were able to do on a weekly basis (Ikner and Harrison being the focal point of the opposing defenses) the numbers don't lie.
Scott
I think get real has a point.. Some of the local schools who went to play offs had zero first team players yet some schools had 3-4 and didn't win a cif title, what gives? Everyone has a opinion, I just would like your thoughts on this.
Big A,
Do you think that means that Muir simply outcoached Arcadia?
i still cant believe i got nothing...8 linebacker spots? and nothing? damn...
Hey Scott,
Good choices on the PSN 2007 All-Area Football team.
Cheers go out to the La Salle players that made the team!!
I read the last few weeks on the player selection of the:
All Pacific League
All Rio Hondo League
All Mission League
All Prep League
All Almont League
and the
All Mission Valley League.
What happened to the hard working players from the, "All Camino Real League"? Did I miss your picks?
Thanks for your great season of reporting.
Congratulations to the Pasadena Star-News 2007 All-Area Football Team!
Huck
i couldn't wait until you open your mouth.1st thing 1st i think your son is a good football player and the rest of his teamates that made it,but this is a all area team. How can they get 4 players on offense if they were that great why didn't they win anything.PHS won 1 game that yall was not suppose to win the 1st cif game..All the rest yall lost and we knew you would lose and who did you beat Glendale,CV,Hover and the burbanks schools get real..THE ONLY way you finsh 3rd in your league and get 5 players on the team is to win CIF. and yall did'nt do that.
New York,
My guess is that Galetti feels that those individuals were better than some on Muir despite the success of the team overall. The individual success of the players chosen may have had more of an impact.
Monrovia only had one solid player in Fernando Gonzalez. The other's one that may have gotten it is Marquise Williams but he was hurt for a while. Boggs was another kid that could have been mentioned.
SoPas, TC and LC have more first teamers than Monrovia, which has none. Arcadia and PHS have more first teamers than Muir. What gives?
get real?
Aginst some of the best teams the offence still had over 380 yards a game! Stats don't lie! Look at Pasadena's "D" stats! Get real? Please is better!
What a joke this team is...while there are many deserving players here, the fact that Monrovia couldn't land one guy on either 1st teams shows just how little you know about football. but perhaps we should thank you. motivating our kids for the 2008 season shouldn't be hard now !!! and by the way, lets see if Tip stays another year or does what all blair coaches do and leave...it's what they do best..
Pasadena high didn't lose game right, cuz they got four players on the team...get real if all you do is pass every down or drop back and play wild ball what happens when you play a good team.you guest it they lose..
Good selections Scott. Great job this season and hope for an even better one next year!
