How does Darius Banks from Culver City end up in a small time college like EWU? Waste of talent for sure
the pacific league doesnt have wrestling.
Congrats to David Allen of S Pas who committed to Tulane according to Scout.com
Scott,
I think you should use your power of the pen to promote the new Pacific League format. I know some critics point out that our proposed realignment makes sense for only football and would create huge mismatches for other sports, but we should at least give it a shot.
"...Burbank fans will wonder why the gym is so crowded."
Burbanksports, that is frickin' HILARIOUS!!!
It is so true. Out here people thought that HS was done after that huge loss. They've obviously bounced back big time but you are right, that was probably more of a significant loss than it was a significant win in terms of community interest. ANd that's exactly why a Verdugo League and a reformatted Pacific League would be good for their respective areas. And Goldenarm, don't be so negative, you guys have had some good teams that could've definitely been able to compete in this league.
I can envision college recruiters showing up to more of these games as well. Instead of deciding to choose between which game to go to, Muir vs. Hoover or Monrovia vs. San Marino, the recruiter would be able to attend the Monrovia vs. Muir game or even a PHS vs. Duarte game. No disrespect to either Hoover or SM, but quite honestly the SGV college players generally hail from Muir, Arcadia, PHS, Monrovia, Duarte, and SF.
Man, the more I think about it the more I wish that this could really come to fruition.
If I were wearing Coach Backus's cleats at TC, I would run like hell the other way when I saw that Pac League lineup.
The thought of facing the team speed of Muir, PHS, Duarte and Monrovia on consecutive Friday nights
could create an unpleasant sleep environment for years to come.
NY: No, I wasn't there when Ted Iacenda played, but I did deal with him quite a bit while I was up there.
In terms of there being a drawback, believe it or not, no. Hart used to have lights and has room for a decent sized stadium (what they have now is ok sized as well), but the school swears by playing at COC. Saugus also plays there, and Valencia used to until they got their own stadium.
Hart considers COC as home. Valencia wanted to have their own home-field advantage, and Saugus doesn't have as much space for a stadium.
For big games, there are upwards of 8,000 or so at Hart games. What's always struck me as strange, is that crowds at places like Arcadia and St. Francis seem a lot louder and more electric.
In my opinion, Hart's talent pool has been hurt by the opening of West Ranch and by the changing focus of some parents of athletes. The talent pool up there is more diluted and dispersed than it was in the 90's. Alemany is the perfect location to create a dynasty and Sierra Canyon might also become a dynasty in some sports as a result of its location.
Stang Fan
Thanks for mentioning my Verdugo league idea. It has always made sense to me. Leagues should be local, have strong rivalries and create neighborhood interest. The Burbank and Glendale schools add little of that to the Pacific.
I'll bet Burbank's victory over Pasadena in Basketball was a huge deal in the SGV. In Burbank very few knew anything about it and even less had any idea of the significance. Pasadena fans will come from all over to pack the gym tonight to make sure that doesn't happen again while the Burbank fans will wonder why the gym is so crowded.
The Burbank schools actually had strong ties to the Foothill League because alot of Burbank families moved to Santa Clarita over the years and club/travel teams from the two areas add to that rivalry for lack of a better term.
The only benefit for Burbank schools being in the Pacific is the coverage provided by the Star News. The kids in Burbank don't get decent newspaper coverage from any other source.
SG,
Would you say the one drawback they have is that they play at College of Canyons rather than have stadiums on campus? Were you there when Ted Iacenda led Hart to victory over Jermaine Lewis and Antelope Valley?
Stang fan, that would be quite a league.
You're right, I probably misinterpreted people wanting the Burbank schools out for other reasons. As far as people predicting Burroughs to being competitive, I felt the same way when they left the Foothill League. All I said before in my post is that they had a stronger team, in my opinion their last year in the Foothill.
I covered football up there for six season and am well aware of the schools up there. That's why I jumped in to talk about the Burbank schools. I was there when they were the league doormats.
Were they getting bored at Hart? Do they want to establish a private school powerhouse that will workover St Bonny? They seem to be Hart's new nemasis/rival now that Mission Viejo got realigned. Nice problems to have.
I believe the older Herrington brother is leaving heart to join with the younger brother at Alemany. scvgridiron.com has an article about it. Also Im not sure where the SF lineman is from I think La Canada. I heard that they are going to expand the CIF bowl games to 5 up from 3.
Is Herrington leaving Hart?
I am not aware of anyone dogging the Burbank schools. Perhaps you misinterpret people preferring more geographically close competition for "dogging" them. Also, I believe Burroughs'first year in the Pacific league included a host of seniors with significant playing time as underclassmen.. I work with several people that have kids at Hart and Valencia and they had predicted Burroughs was going to be strong in the Pacific League its first year, unlike what you said. The Foothill league has always been strong but now watch what happens to Hart as their heralded coaching staff disintegrates.
Scott,
Canyon Country beat DLS in the state bowl last year. And Hart dominated CC until Welch returned. They play big ball up there. Santa Clarita may as well be a transplanted West Texas/Southern Ohio town.
Scott,
I hear you. However, I don't think we are speaking of competition, rather we are speaking in terms of geography.
I would love to see a league that another poster had mentioned a few months back with the likes of Burbank, Burroughs, Glendale, Hoover, CV, and perhaps La Canada and you could call it the Verdugo League or something. That makes more geographical sense to me.
The Pacific could then consist of Muir, PHS, TC, Monrovia, Arcadia, and Duarte give or take a school or two.
THis would undoubtedly intensify the local games, because quite honestly no one really comes out for Muir vs. Hoover or Arcadia vs. Burbank or PHS vs. Glendale.
This would not hurt the Burbank schools at ALL in terms of being able to compete.
I'm getting a kick out of everyone dogging the Burbank schools.
Since I have a history of covering those two schools, here goes.
Burroughs is 11-3 since joining the league in 2006 and was 7-0 to win league in its first season. Both years, Burroughs played St. Francis tough in losses.
Burbank is 8-6 in its two seasons in the Pacific, including 5-2 during its first season.
To show a scary comparison of where those two schools has come from to now is staggering.
In its last two seasons in the Foothill League, Burroughs was 1-4 in league (beat Burbank) and 4-6 overall with a better team than the one that swept through the Pacific with running back Thomas Kyle.
They were 0-5 in 2004 (4-6 overall).
In other words, their only nonleague losses both seasons came to St. Francis.
Burbank was 0-5 in league and 3-7 overall in 2005, and 1-4 in league (4-6 overall) in 2004.
With very few exceptions, neither team played very close against the Santa Clarita Valley teams, which was part of the reason to switch leagues.
At least they can compete in the Pacific. A down Burroughs team beating Arcadia and hanging close with St. Francis proved that.
Having said that, I'd love to see the local-local matchups.
L,A. Times sports page had an article today on athletes being recruited..who had verbally "committed", then changed schools of choice.
Seems Neuheisel/Chow have UCLA looking like a good place to hang your jock, or maybe steer you a path to Sunday ball. The article emphasized that in the past that once athletes "committed", they were less likely to be approached by other recruiters...nowadays no longer the case.
So was Monrovia. Sounds good to me.
NY
That would be full circle, since Alhambra formerly was in the Pac League.
Stangfan,
Maybe Alhambra could be the other team along with Duarte to replace the Burbank schools.
That's awesome news about SF's O-lineman. Where is that kid from?
Stang Fan,
I suppose we Monrovians really have nothing external to complain about. Until we dominate our current division, why should we seek "better" competition. I truly believe, though, that it is hard for our guys to truly get excited playing small private schools that we have never heard of, even if they do have good football programs.
Interesting comment about the unruly events that have taken place between select attendees at Monrovia vs PHS and Muir games in the past. I won't even refer to them as fans because they were not there to watch and support our teams. They were there to detract from everyone else's enjoyment. A few bad apples really ruin the bunch, or at least ruin the perception of the bunch. I am a firm believer, though, in not allowing stuff like that dictate which teams can play each other. On the other hand, I would rather raise funds for a private police force that would ensure safety for both teams and their fans.
I saw on rivals.com that St Francis' Alex Reitnouer has commited to Washington State. Thats two years in a row that the cougs have landed a lineman from St. Francis.
NY,
I too would love to see Monrovia and TC in the Pacific in exchange for Glendale and Hoover. Hell while we're at it throw in Duarte and another school in exchange for Burbank and Burroughs.
But let's be honest, the history of Monrovia/Duarte vs. Pasadena, in terms of gangs, doesn't bode well for the sensible addition of MHS to the Pacific League. As great as it would be for the area, I think the admins and the local police depts. would be against it.
I know that MHS plays Blair with no problems at all, but let's face it Muir and PHS are totally different monsters when it comes to fan support, location, competitive spirit, etc.
Unfortunately for the teams in the Rio Hondo, this new alignment seems to drop them into an inferior SGV league...at least that is what the perception will be.
Although going against the "big boys" in preleague scheduling I believe to be highly beneficial for SGV teams...actually being locked into league play...in most cases would mean a repetitive butt kicking...at least in most RHL cases. There would be exceptions, but it seems the horses and the depth are getting harder to find and hold onto nowadays.
As far as the realignment goes I'm pretty much with NY. It's great in terms of local football, however, it is a shame that we won't be able to see how the SGV stacks up with the other areas. In the end, it just may be best because, as much as we'd hate to admit it, the SGV's prowess in football is nowhere near where it used to be. So maybe for the time being this is something that will help jump start something for the area and maybe later on we can move back up with the big boys.
Huck,
What can you expect from Muir? Well, we all know one thing to expect from Muir.......a victory in the Rose Bowl EVERY SINGLE YEAR!!!!!
Turkey Tussle 2008:
Muir- A Lot
phs- A Little
GA,
Last time I checked, we have about 6600 kids in the district. Two junior highs. Our high school now has roughly 1800, which is an increase of roughly 400 since the mid-1990's. Dataquest website has all this info for every public school and district in California.
NY
Any idea how many elementary and jr. high schools Monrovia draws from?
Many moons ago when at Alhambra High, we drew from 10 or 11 Elementary Schools. Park, Martha Baldwin, Granada, Fremont, Emery Park, St Thomas More, Marguerita... just a few that I can remember.
626,
That proposed division is very similar to one that we have been discussing for a while. It sounds good for creating some great local rivalries. I would like to see Monrovia and Temple City added to the Pacific in exchange for Glendale and Hoover, though.
The one thing I don't like about that division is that it may be too insulated such that we will lose a sense for how the SGV stacks up to other regions.
Hahaha there anit no musty ponys up there only my boi T is reping the 626
What are some of ur thougts on this new all-SGV division? Muir, Charter Oak, Arcadia, South Hills, Burroughs, Diamond Ranch, Alhambra, Los Altos, PHS, San Gabriel, West COvina, Schurr, Wilson, Crescenta Valley, Bonita, etc.
If nothing else at least the playoff games will be well attended.
It's being voted on in February.
GoldenState Preps also has a discussion on the proposed divison changes. Some guy that sounds knowledgeable said"As far as I know the CIF hasn't formally voted to approve this yet. There is still an appeal process. However, I heard that the football coaches advisory board gave their approval to it and Mr. Wigood said he would stand by it."
does that me the Prep League is no longer in the east vally?
scott what have you heard about divisional/league re-alignments?
Nothing is official yet. Speaking of confirming. SGV, are you a multi-personality? Just wondering. :)
anon 9:56
This is what I saw re East Valley.
The East Valley has the Christian, De Anza, and High Desert remaining plus the Academy and Alpha from the Northeast, and the Frontier from the Mid Valley.
I am sure that Scott can conirm all this with local AD's.
Anon 8:36
CalHiSports has a thread on the realignments. Those were the only divisions listed.
Huckster- you should ask your brother in law regarding the Pacific League not having a rep at the Central Division meeting because I heard the same thing and that Muir's coach as the League Champ was supposed to go.
sgv observer,
was there anything about any alignments in the east valley division?
sgv observer
what was the website with the realignments?
Thanks for the explanation Scott!
If this is true and Muir was supposed to go to the CIF meeting, it further explains why the school is so dysfunctional! It figures!!!!!! Them “HATERS” knew no one on their team was going to make it because of the early exit. They also knew PHS would have had 2 or 3 more players that could’ve made the “All CIF TEAM”! We (PHS) had the best receiving core in the “Central” division, because in two games none of the other receivers had our stats! But hey! What could you expect from “MUIR” the mighty mules!
Regarding divison changes/ re-alignments , this is one proposal which was on a website and may have some legs. The change locally would be to take the Pacific League out of the Central Divison and put it in the Southeast, which includes the Almont league (Alhambra,Schurr etc.)
No changes for the PAC 5, the Western and the Northern Conferences. All the other conferences have one or more changes. Inland--Big 8, CBL, Inland Valley, Southwestern
Central--Baseline, Mt. Baldy, San Andreas, Sierra, Sun Belt
Eastern--DSL, DVL, MRL, Mountain Pass, Sunkist
Southwest--Century, Empire, Freeway, Orange, Sea View
Southeast--Almont, Del Rio, Miramonte, Pacific, San Antonio
Southern--Garden Grove, Golden West, Orange Coast, Pacific Coast, Suburban
Goldenarm,
I feel badly for the Pac League kids as well. Im ashamed of the athletic directors for not recognizing the problem sooner or letting the Muir coaches know. Lazy or just dumb on their parts.
All-CIF does sound a lot better and I agree, it will be around for a while.
New York
Praise be. U R the man, forget about the logistics, somebody just snap the ball.
For your suggestion, may the Coaches Advisory Committee mail you a hefty check, fully tax deductible of course, or at least on the blind side of Uncle Sam.
"LA84 Foundation Team" just does not have the same cachet or understandibility as "All-CIF." Maybe sponsorships are getting out of hand - how about "the All-CIF Team presented by the LA84 Foundation."?? At my son's recent football banquent, the coaches still referred to the players as "All-CIF," so this will be around for a while.
Goldenarm,
If I had it my way, the 84 Foundation would just be parallel to the CIF such that there would be another season played during the spring under the umbrella of the 84 Foundation. Keep the fall season under CIF. How about that? Two seasons so that the guys don't have to be caged up three fourths of the year. We have a fall and a spring rugby season. Let's do it for football too.
Scott G
thx for the link to the LA 84 website. Talk about a cocktail of politics and sports....
Is this a good thing for prep ball? It looks like the land of red tape and scratch my back, maybe then your kid will get a vote or two. I had no idea the "84" stems from the 84 Olympics...just did not see prep ball falling under that umbrella
If that is true regarding the no-show on the Muir coaches...you would think they could at least "mail in" their picks, send a rep in their absence or make a phone call ??
It is not like anyone will go back and amend anything.
Bad deal for the Pac League kids.
I am still wondering on the name change from ALL CIF to Foundation 84. Does anyone know the significance of the 84? Maybe Earth is the 84th planet in the Solar System these guys are from?
Anon,
As someone posted in a thread earlier, apparently the coaches from Muir who were supposed to go to the CIF meeting never went. Therefore, the Pacific League was not represented. I have no idea how some of those kids from the Pacific didn't make it, but it happened.
I hope the future is brighter and coaches take the initiative to promote their kids.
Each league will be hashing that out soon. We should know by March.
There's a lot of inconsistency. Dorian Wells, the Tribune's Player of the Year, wasn't even on the Southwest Division's list. It is what it is.
LSFan: the significance was that his name was supposed to be bold and there was an error. Strong is actually a code for bold on our system.
Scott is there any word on whether there will be any significant cif re-alignments for the coming season?
sorry. that was me.
Scott,
Doesn't seem as if there is quite a bit of inconsistency with all of these post-season awards? Did Golper make all-state but not all-CIF/LA84?
Monrovia has the most All-CIF guys from the RHL, yet TC and Blair both had more RHL players of the year. I realize there are likely different voters/selection committees, but it would be nice to have some consistency, or not? At least the awards are getting spread around to different players, right? Good or bad?
Coultrip,
Flattering to be mentioned among the elite, such as BigA.
Hey Scott,
Thanks for posting the ALL-CIF (LA 84 Foundation) Team awards.
Congratulations to all the players who made the team!
A special congrats to the guys from La Salle who are representing the Mid-Valley Division.
And a personal Congratulations to my wonderful son, Patrick "Ryan" Hauk: #77 - La Salle, for being selected.
Scott, is there a significance to the word "strong" preceding Patrick Hauk's name?
Again, Congratulations to all the players and Coaches! What an enjoyable and exciting season this was.
Good luck to all next season.
Then you should know it was already posted. You said Crockom's the past. The post is about this past seasons awards. Again, feel free to talk anything football right here.
Galetti,
I posted the all-state stuff about Riley and Golper. Thanks for the explanation.
People asked for the entire list of the All-CIF (LA 84 list). It was e-mailed to me, so I posted it. The all-state list was posted I believe by Golper's dad on another thread.
Feel free to talk about the future on this thread.
Scott Galetti,
Why haven't you had anything up on Golper, Riley and Rettig who were all-state selections. You run a main page on Crockham, but he is gone and is not the future. Give the people something to talk about the future, thats what most people are calling for!
