FOOTBALL: Mustangs to be tested early

| | Comments (28) |

Muir High School, as reported on the Tribune blog, will open the 2008 football season with a Week 0 game at Diamond Ranch.
As of Friday, Muir coach Ken Howard hadn't signed the contract, but, according to the coach, it's a just a formality.

Here's the gauntlet the young Mustangs must go through before reaching the Pacific League following a bye week.
Week 0: at Diamond Ranch
Week 1: vs. Oaks Christian
Week 2: at Venice

Question: Without Youngblood, can the Mustangs survive this schedule, and how good can they be?

Who do the stangs have they have no one on there team how are they going to get any wins who are there players someone please tell me!

Big A,

The O-line will be the strength of the team! Pasadena had 3, 10th graders and 1, 11th grader that started the whole year on the line. Austin Lacey will be the real deal at running back and he will only be a 10th grader as well! The Dogs will not lose a league game next year. Burroughs will be 2nd, Arcadia and CV will battle for 3rd and Muir/Burbank will battle for 4th. As for CV and the JV going 10-0 doesn’t mean a thing. The Dogs are back and we will never be at the bottom again! The Dog’s will have an 11th grader at QB and he will be the real deal! I’m back fired up for next year! We will be ready!

Stangs are going to go 4-6 haha
all because wno one knows hich players will make a impact I don't see everyone on Defensive and I don't see anyone on O other than Ruben and Dunlap . That's why they will go 4-6 . Who do they got?
Dogs have this league in the bag.

LETS GO DOGS!!!!!!!!!!

Who are the players that will help muir this year because there losing alot of talent with Willie Youngblood, Owens, Patton, Daniels, Samuels, Hanna, Thompson, I also here that there losing all there D the only ones staying are Dunlap and that number 7 kid there linebacker. I dont see what playmakers this teams has on D. O i think they"ll be finding with Ruben and Dunlap. But who else will step up and lead this team. The question is who are the playmakers to help this team out other than ruben and dunlap?

For everyone

Huckster,

You tied for second in league and you lost to Arcadia heads up.

Who do you have? You lost your QB, RB, 2 WR? Your four main focus of offense are all gone. You are starting over again.

I predict the Pacific League will end up like this:

1. Burroughs - Lost quarterback but they bring back their 1000 yard rusher.
2. Muir/Arcadia - Arcadia brings back Golper who is their only bright spot. Muir will have a good team like usual. Thompson and Dunlap will be bright spot for Muir.
4. CV - 10-0 JV squad coming up (if I remember correctly)
5. Pasadena/Burbank - Pasadena has athletes but no line other than Walls. Don't know much about Burbank other than they just seem to compete.
7. Glendale - Obvious
8. Hoover - Obvious

Stang Fan,

The Dog's will be better than what you think! Believe me! Yes, we lost the “Tussle” but much was gained! I guarantee the Pacific league champs will be the Pasadena High BullDogs! For the record “Stang Fan” the Dogs took 2nd in the Pacific, but I know you Muir people will not accept the reality that the gap has closed to about a nose! I’ll say it again; Muir will be 4-6!

The Dogs preseason schedule will be Arroyo Valley, Long Beach Jordan and Saugus. That’s a hell of a schedule too! The Dogs should win all three against some stellar talent and rip through the Pacific like it was 1983! Yawl got a lot to learn, because were loaded this year!

Yours truly,
Huckster!!!!!!

Stang Fan,

I was wondering from your comments, do you see Muir's off season lifting program needing a boost? Meaning it may be lacking in organization - or commitment from some players? I think your observation of offseason strength gain is right on, it could well be a factor in pushing the team up a notch in competitiveness.

At TC, Coach Backus is the primary motivator in the weight room. I think it says something to the upcoming kids when the main man is there on a regular basis, months, days and weeks away from any Friday night lights. I mean, lunges and squats are no day of joy for most.

Much success to the Stangs in 08.

Happy new year to ALL!!! You know what Scott you should consider a thread that has each team's resolutions for the '08 season...that would be hilarious.

Anyhow, January is winding down as is another year of football. I don't know about you guys but as much as I love playoff football I also get sick in the stomach to think that we won't hear any helmets and pads crackin' again until at least August. Nonetheless, here we are in January talking about next season, you gotta love it!!!

I'm glad to see that Muir has scheduled a strong ESGV team, I would have liked to have seen Charter Oaks (since they always have a few of our finest) but DRanch is a good up and coming team that will pose as a definite challenge. From what I understand they are going to be a formidable team with good size and speed...it should be a great game. Oaks Christian is Oaks Christian, however I think we will see the closest score since the series began four years ago. Venice is losing some top notch talent, but with their wide-open offense they are always attracting good players especially with their connection to Air7 and the QB guru Steve Clarkson.

If Muir hits the weight room hard this off-season (which is the ONLY way they can compete with the elite programs) they can fare quite well against these teams. I know Scott is concerned with our RB situation, but as NY said Muir always has RB's. If we can be physical up front it is not entirely impossible to go 3-0, but highly unlikely. I see us going 2-1 in these games, but I wouldn't be surprised in the least if we were to go 1-2. I would be disappointed if we were to go 0-3, which in all reality can happen, but that wouldn't mean that we would necessarily be a bad team, as those teams are pretty darn good. I guess, as usual, we will have to wait and see. But that's a damn long wait, I tell ya.

Keep the posts coming, it's great to see the "old-timers" still contributing...........even the Huckster!

LET'S GO STANGS!!!

Huckster, you "slay" me!!! It was real cute how the dogs scratched, clawed, and yelped their way to a 3rd place finish in league. They should definitely feel proud about themselves, after all the bronze is still a precious metal...........or is it? Doesn't matter. Bottom line is that Mills should be proud that he took a team that he had been building and grooming for three hard, long years and turned them into a 3rd place Pacific League team. Awesome! By the way you KNOW we are not going 4-6, please don't mistake our record with what yours will be. See you again next year, oh, and I heard they are making a sequel to last years documentary............I believe the new edition is called "Crosstown Domination: Damn This Sh** is Getting Old."

LET'S GO STANGS!!!

Can I hold your clipboard for you?

New York said:

Campy,

I hear you, but there is no need for us to be gun-shy. You know as well as I do that the thumpings were not necessary. I dont think our current OC was in place during those previous meetings. Inconsistency and confusion killed us and made our team play like a deer in the headlights.

Our program took initial strides when we were a makeshift team in 1994 and beat West Covina the year after they played in the D-2 semis. Then we started playing and beating teams like Etiwanda and remember Diamond Bar (gave them their only loss in two years). Playing lightweights will limit our progress to that of a lightweight.

Did you see that Coach Rycroft's semi-pro team recently finished their 19-0 campaign? Maybe he needs to take the defense again.

I think it gets discussed. The last contract with Charter Oak was brutal for the Cats, so I don't know if there's a big rush. But it's impossible not to agree with you in spirit: this is how you raise your expectations (and your game).

Campy,
Thanks for sharing. Any other news on Monrovia football?

Rosemead is much better than Montclair, but they are still usually a first-round exit. Any thoughts on when we might put a Charter Oak-type team back on the schedule?

scott,

will you be covering signing day on feb 6th? only person i can think of who would be signing to a major d1 college is kevan walker. ive heard that he is no longer a lock with ucla. oregon state, arizona, cal, and also oregon have offered him and hes taking trips this month. it will be very very interesting on where he goes because i loved watching this kid these past 2 years he is a hardnosed football player who plays with passion and to see him play at the next level is great. hopefully u can cover that and even take pix of him signing!!

no apaches down

Muir will go 4 and 6 next year! They will make the playoff's as a third seed and PHS will win leauge! Yes, I said! Go Dog's!!!!

BigA said:

I think they can win one out of those three. Venice loses three big div 1 prospects, WR who is going to UCLA, RB who is going to USC, and a QB who is going Div 1. Venice will be re-building so I'm looking at that game to be the one they win. I don't know much about Diamond Ranch other than one of my friends trains a kid who plays football for them.

1-2 for Muir is my prediction.

626 said:

Not the most brutal schedule out there but still pretty tough. They will be lucky to go 1-2 and they will not beat Oaks christian. Does anyone think they can?

Campanario said:

Monrovia hooked up with Rosemead again; should be a good one. No more Bassett or Montclair type games.

Not sure what the Star News will run on this...

I saw that Vic Cuccia, longtime fixture at LA Wilson passed away Friday.
In the mid-seventies Cuccia led Wilson to 3 consec City section titles.
39 or 40 straight wins, I believe.

I met him in 1972 as a teenager and he talked Wilson football to me, suggesting I might want to consider transfering there. Passionate was an understatement as far the man's love of the game. I should have listened and heeded his suggestion.

His son Ron threw for 145 TD's at Wilson, I believe still a City section record. I went to school with his daughter, Kathy.
Cuccia passed a legacy of knowledge to those he coached and spent time with. He was a coach any QB would want on the sideline. Sincere condolences to the Cuccia family.

After you fight the Tyranasaurus Rex and survive, you realize you CAN beat all the rest of the lizards.

This is a pre-league gut check. You never know, it might be the just the ticket to set Muir on a path of destruction through the Pacific league.

Looks like a 0-3 start for Muir!!! hahaha

New York said:

Scott G,
You're the man for getting it going.

The Stangs will always be able to find a good runningback. Diamond Ranch is similar to Muir in that they schedule a very tough pre-season as well. Neither team will be intimidated. Realistically, these two teams should be in the same CIF division, as we have previously blogged.

I hope this matchup is indicative of more West vs. East games to come.
