BOYS BASKETBALL: Eagles knock off No. 1 seed

For the second time this season, Marshall’s boys basketball team beat the No. 1-ranked team. This time it was Woodcrest Christian. Next up is a matchup against the other No. 1 team the Eagles beat, Pacific Hills.

Marshall plan results in upset

PASADENA – Marshall High School advanced to the CIF-Southern Section Division V-AA boys basketball semifinals with a 54-50 upset over Woodcrest Christian on Tuesday at Muir High.
The top-seeded Royals were the undefeated Big Sky League champions and came in with a 17-game winning streak, but none of that mattered to the Eagles.
Marshall’s pressure defense and strong inside scoring from Dorian Hampton (18 points) made the difference in the Eagles’ impressive victory.
“This is the biggest win in Marshall history, it’s the biggest win,” Marshall (20-8) coach Jerry DeLaurie said. “You know, we’ve had a lot of great teams here at Marshall Fundamental, but they never got this far.”
After Woodcrest Christian (24-3) cut Marshall’s lead to one point late in the fourth quarter, Hampton scored on a twisting, reverse layup to put the Eagles ahead 51-48. Hampton then blocked the Royals’ ensuing shot attempt.
The Eagles headed downcourt and the ball came free. Junior Terrell Burnett saved it from going out of bounds and simultaneously passed to Hampton, who scored inside.
Woodcrest’s Brandon Ward then hit a jumper to make it a one-possession game with less than a minute to play. Marshall missed some late free throws to set up a potential game-tying 3-point attempt. Marshall senior David Morris partially blocked Ward’s long-range attempt and Hampton was fouled on the rebound.
He went to the free-throw line with five seconds remaining and missed his first attempt. But he made the second one to seal the victory for Marshall.
