GIRLS BASKETBALL: Flintridge Prep falls in semis

Rebels fall to Laguna Hills for second year in a row.

MISSION VIEJO – In its quest to reach the CIF-Southern Section Division IV-A championship game for a second consecutive season, Flintridge Prep’s girls basketball team got off to a rough start and couldn’t recover en route to a 61-41 loss to top-seeded Laguna Hills in Saturday night’s semifinal at Trabuco Hills High.
It was Laguna Hills (23-6) that also ended the Rebels’ season a year ago with a 57-42 victory in the division title game.
Fourth-seeded Flintridge Prep (22-6), which entered Saturday with a 14-game winning streak, fell behind 19-4 after the first quarter and 38-13 at the half.
The Hawks hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter and nine in the game.
Laguna Hills standout Lauren Engeln scored 19 of her game-high 21 points in the first half.
Megan Musashi and Courtney Robinson each scored 14 for the Prep League champion Rebels.
“We had a very successful season,” Rebels coach Ken Fisher said. “We won league for a seventh straight year and reached the semifinals for only the fourth time in school history. We’re young. We exceeded a lot of people’s expectations.”
