BOYS BASKETBALL: Pasadena vs. Renaissance Academy; Who would win?

| | Comments (58) |

Inspired by Dena Fan's post, I decided to dissect the paths Pasadena and Renaissance Academy have taken.

Both teams have lost to very tough teams. Both teams played Burbank and one of them is unbeaten against the other Bulldogs. Both teams played Muir and had similar results.

Pasadena is hot right now, no question about it. But Renaissance Academy has improved immensely over the course of the season as well. I think this game would come down to defense, and from what I've seen, RA's defense is quite impressive with Anthony Stover and Hector Harold rejecting shots left and right. What makes them good on defense is that they contest every shot no matter where it's from on the floor.

PASADENA VS. RENAISSANCE ACADEMY: TALE of the TAPE
PLAYERS:
Guard: Keion Bell (P) or Justin Cook (RA). Tough choice, but I'd go with Bell.
Center: Joseph Henson (P) or Anthony Stover (RA). I'd take stover in this one, although Henson's showing signs of returning to form. Stover's 100 percent better than he was a year ago.
Forward: Marcus Harvey (P) or Hector Harold (RA). Harold's been a bit more consistent.
Post: Steven Adams (P) vs. DeAndre Daniels (RA). Tough call, but I'd say Daniels has been more of a factor.
Point: George Toyama (P) vs. Yader Combs. I'll go with Combs, although Toyama is getting better every game.
Bench: Pasadena: Junior Travis Flye has the potential of being a real solid player. Tyron Crockom has developed into a nice guard. Junior forward Marcus Ford and junior guard Darius Johnson are also players the Bulldogs can look to in the future.
Renaissance Academy: Josh Thomas. He's actually a starter, but has been riddled by injuries. Tremaine Tatum. Has shown ability to blend right in with the starters. Matt Raya. A serviceable guard.
My thoughts: If it weren't for Thomas, I'd give the edge to Pasadena.

Pasadena’ losses: Santa Margarita (21-3), No. 5 in state; Clovis West (19-4), 29th in state, Franklin of Seattle (16-2), No. 47 nationally; Newark Memorial (20-5), No. 40 in state , Burbank (16-9), No. 378.
Pasadena’s Wins: Eisenhower (20-3), No. 18 in state; Torrey Pines (17-6), No. 42 in state; Arroyo Valley (14-9), No. 84 in state; St. Mary’s Phoenix (13-10); Sheldon Sacramento (14-8), No. 96 in state; L.A. Jordan 14-5, No. 120 in state; Crescenta Valley (15-9) No. 185 in state; Burroughs (10-13) No. 342; Hoover (13-10) No. 355; Cabrillo (6-17), 58-49, No. 372; Burbank (16-9), No. 378; Glendale (12-12) No. 433; Arcadia (6-18) No. 628; Muir (2-16) No. 757; L.A. Marshall (4-15) No. 1,015.

Renaissance Academy’s losses: Simi Valley (21-1), No. 9 in state. Final was 81-68 after RA fell behind by 10 after one; Etiwanda (23-1), No. 10 in state. Final was 58-57 in OT on Etiwanda's home floor. And RA was without a couple of its top players. RA led 29-27 at half and 42-40 after three. It was a game they should've won, but lost it at the foul line. A note, both Simi Valley and Etiwanda were in the top five when RA played them.
Renaissance Academy’s Wins: Agoura (14-9) No. 169; La Canada (17-7) No. 217; Montclair Prep (13-7) No. 288; University (18-9); Schurr (15-6) No. 294, Santa Barbara (12-14), No. 335; Marnatha (16-7) No. 389; Burbank (16-9), which beat Pasadena, No. 378; Brentwood (10-11) No. 384; South Hills (12-10) No. 412; South Torrance (9-12) No. 448; Reseda (10-13) No. 468, Keppel (11-13) No. 526; La Salle (10-14) No. 589; Muir (2-16) No. 757; Community Charter (18-12) No. 787; Belmont (12-11) No. 798; El Monte (8-17) No. 919; Kilpatrick (4-17) No. 999; Gladstone (6-15) No. 1,002; L.A. Adventist (6-8) No. 1,185 (Charity game at Staples Center).
Coming up: at Community Charter (18-12); vs. Mission Prep (15-12)
Notes: Crescenta Valley lost to Santa Barbara, which RA handled easily.

Bottom Line: This would be a game I'd pay to see.

Personal? NO WAY! “It is what it is, no more no less!” I do agree with you; only sports.
Once again.

Sounds like you have something personal going on Judge. Let's just talk sports is that not the purpose for this blog?

"the judge"....i only know what i saw at the game. nothing more nothing less. i know nothing about his transfer status

TheJudge said:

Anon, one last question I promise; rumor has it that the transfer student to RA, #1 was removed from his former high school team for discipline reasons…. Since you seem to know quite a bit about this young man, can you verify this? In addition, is it true once the basketball season is finished he will transfer back to the school he left? Oh by the way, I am still waiting for the answer to my first question.

We'll have someone there.

Scott are you going to cover the Flintridge Poly game tomorrow evening?

No, they lost to Burbank.

michael johnson said:

didnt phs lose to glendale anyways

renaissance wins easily

One question...... Are you speaking as an unbiased fan or as a parent? Just wondering!

Anonymous said:

I understand at the RA Maranatha game the transfer from Marshall (#1) changed the game. Someone else got the ink but #1 changed the game. RA was up by 3 or 5 points when he started the 2nd half. #1 for RA came in and within 6 to 7 minutes RA was up by 20, and I beleive he was sick with the flu.

I'm not saying they would have won but if he was still with Marshall they would have had a much better chance at beating Maranatha, he was the best guard Marshall had.

Harmon's reportedly enrolled at Cleveland State University.

speaking of Divison one players from pasadena, what happend to trevon harmon, i know he was being recruited by D 1 schools, what happend?

Maranatha Fan said:

You did not mention the transfer from marshall (#1) in the bench collum...Great footwork. not enough time for him because there is too much talent that has been there previously

parent said:

Kyle Austin did transfer out of USC. Big mistake. He would begetting lots of minutes right now.

Anonymous said:

Kyle Austin transfered out of USC in December. I beleive he transfered to UC Riverside.

Arcadia said:

Marcus Harvey and Nigel Ajere were both transfers from Arcadia last year. I have known Marcus since the first grade and he attended Arcadia schools until his junior year. Kyle Austin still plays for USC, but he doesn't get much PT.

RA only played LA Adventist once and it was a charity event. By the way, LA Adventist isn't too far ahead of LA Jordan, Pasadena's first opponent.

williemayshayes said:

Sure, Renaissance may be decent. But let's give them fewer fierce opponents like LA Adventist, Community Charter, as well as most of the Freelance League...rename it the FreePRANCE League.

Give them a few Mission League opponents like Harvard-Westlake.

and talk about recruiting.. how did kion bell get to phs.... and wat about last year with nigel... at least most of the kids at renaissance have been there since there freshman year... man tuck brought kion in just so he can have a player that sign to a division 1 college other than kyle austin....hey what ever happened to that kid anyway?

Anonymous said:

is this even a question...... all you have to do is take kion bell out of his game and renaissance wins...its not like thats hard to do... and being that there is no one on the team to stop justin cook or stover, and lets not forget about tremaine tatum, hector herold , and deandre daniels... yadar combs will lock up darious and so will terren turrentine... come on people lets get real...

SGV Observer said:

Mike Parisi would be more than willing to take action on the game.

I added my two cents on the benches in the post.

RA Parent said:

Scott,

This is a great post. Much appreciated!

bball said:

hey scott, could u check out the arcadia/CV game this thursday night? i know its not that significant but its a huge rivalry and the fans get really into it and it is senior night for arcadia.it should be a good game cause arcadia plays very well at home and barely lost to hoover by 2 who is tied with CV in league right now. that would be awesome if you could get some coverage for this game

curious too said:

Scott, want to know your analysis on the bench players? Which team has the edge when it comes to depth?

I love it. I've been told I'm against RA, wanting La Canada to win, and now I'm told I'm bias toward RA by Pasadena fans.
Where were you people earlier during the season?
No one in league can stop them. We'll see how things shake out in the playoffs and if the Bulldogs can repeat. A tough road ahead, that's for sure.

historian said:

ha ha ha PHS shouldnt talk... what about Nigel Agiere? just so happens that he shows up on PHS's doorstep? bottom line is that kids want to be part of a winning program. if that is wrong, then CIF needs to change something, don't blame Tucker or Cooke for having kids that want to go to their teams.

Anonymous said:

When an athlete goes to another school and finds success because the coach knows how to utilize them, then they call it recruiting.nothing would be said if renaissance wasnt a threat

Realist said:

All I keep hearing is "Renaissance is recruiting"....Keion's AAU Team held practices at P.H.S...He has known Coach Tuck since he was young....how do you think he ended up at h.s??? not by chance...Recruiting happens all through out the city

pride said:

haha talk about a bias report...looks like you give RA the benefit of the doubt in everything.id say dena by 6 or 8 noone can stop them right now

The problem is, you can say they recruit, but can it be proven? Until it can, all we can do is guess. What's funny about the argument of recruiting is that Pasadena has benefited from some key transfers the past couple of years.

It's my understanding that Thomas will be back, but who knows for sure.

SL said:

Considering RA recruits Pasadena wins by default.

curious too said:

What about benches? You didnt mention Josh Thomas, is he out for the year?
