BOYS BASKETBALL: The little school that did

| | Comments (16) |

Yes, this is a sort of Tribune and Inland Valley Bulletin school, but La Verne Lutheran proved me wrong.
The Trojans defeated Pacific Hills 57-56 to win the CIF-SS Division V-AA title.
It's kind of fitting that Jordan Sally hit the game-winning layup late in the game.
Sally was a novalty in prep sports as he was an in-season transfer from Bishop Amat. What makes it even more interesting is he went from a Catholic school to a Lutheran school. But since the CIF approved it, who am I to say anything but congratulations to them?

I'm posting this here because there's a possibility that La Verne Lutheran could face none other than Renaissance Academy in the state playoffs next week. That would be an interesting matchup to say the least.

Question: Who would win?

What do you mean Public schools don't recruit - HA - I've seen kids drive 30, 60 and even 90 miles to attend a public school, because they want to play on that particular school's sports team. Parents have gotten jobs in near certain schools so their kids can attend, even though they live in another valley. And it's happened right here in our own backyard.
Always remember when you point a finger - 3 are pointing back at you.
It's time to put away the negative and celebrate with the schools that have won and represent the SGV!

Marshall's coach told me he played against them. La Verne Lutheran is Freddy's school, so I couldn't tell you if he played or not.

Scott, I did not see Flowers name in the box scores againist Marshall or LL, was he out hurt?

Gone is the day of students having to play for there local school and rightfully so. This is America; parent should have the right to put their children where they feel most comfortable. If a school wants to win they now must bring in coaches parents and students want to play for. LL did nothing wrong they played by the rules of 2008, don't hate the player. We will now see what schools want to develop kids and win by whom they bring in as instructors. Don't get mad because this coach has earned the trust of parents and students, isn't that what schools are supposed to do?

I have no problem with parents wanting the best educational experiences for their children and it is their right to send them to the best school available.

I see Dad's point. Public school districts don't own students in their boundries.

But for athletic competition it fuels the public vs. private debate.
We need to stop the madness. Maybe it's time for an across the board seperation of private and public schools for all CIF and state team playoffs.

Obviously dad has a problem w/ reading comprehension. To make it clear the school's basketball team is not representative of the school's general population. The school is 90%+ white and than there is the basketball team.

And to the other poster yes most sports teams are reflective of the schools general population unless of course you are talking about a school that recruits or a college. Oh! than again colleges are allowed to recruit.

When the RA coach started out there, he did not have a bunch of talented kids come to the school right off the bat. In fact, he coached girls travel ball and not boys. He worked with the group of kids that were there. They slowly became successful and that's when the more talented players started coming to the school. He's been there 9 years now and only started gaining recognition 4 years ago.

The makeup of the basketball, football and track and field teams at most schools do not always reflect the rest of the student body.
Neither do the waterpolo, soccer, tennis, wrestling, gymnastics, and volleyball.
What is your point?

Dad said:

Mater Dei has a predominately white team in a hispanic community. Loyola has a predominately African American team in Koreatown. The St Francis basketball team started three african americans, one hispanic and one white guy. They are in La Canada, which I seriously doubt has the same makeup.

What difference does that make? So if they were all white it would be ok with you.

I don't know about Prodigy or Murray other than what I read about. It appears that Murray or a group of people are donating over $20 million to the school to expand their sport facilities and the school, and apparently want to be able to use the facilities at some times when the school is not using them. I don't have a problem with that. That is an issue for the school, the City and the neighbors.

explain the Cameron Murray connection and Prodigy bball as well. Even the SGV newspaper did a little article on it. Interesting that the makeup of both boys basketball teams is very much unlike its general population.

By the way, RA will win by twenty. Too big and too tough.

You may have read about, but you clearly don't know about what you are writing. La Verne Lutheran did not cheat.

Lutheran hired Coach Cooper to coach their team. About five or so of kids that used to play on his AAU team decided they wanted to go to a school with a good coach, one of them being his nephew and some of the others were his nephews friends. He had I would guess about twenty or more kids on his various AAU teams. Some of the others enrolled in Mater Dei, De LaSalle, Campbell Hall and numerous other schools. He did not funnel kids into his program. In fact, he probbably did not get the best kids from his program.

As I have said before, there is no cheating if a kid wants to go to a school with a good coach. My son lives in Pasadena, and he applied to Mater Dei because he liked the coaches and their program. If he goes, it will not be becasue of any cheating by Mater Dei. It would be a parent choosing the best overall school for his or her son.

And that is what the kids and their parents did at Lutheran.

Do some people really believe that a school district owns their kid. That they have to play at the school closest to their house irrespective of how good the coach is or how good the school academics.

Two cheater schools? I don't know anything about LV Lutheran, but Renaissance has done nothing wrong.
Go see for yourself before you continue to spew lies and crap.

The two cheater schools can play each other. That would be very fitting. Unfortunately both schools should be disqualified for CIF and state playoffs.

observer said:

I have read a lot about this LV Lutheran team and I do not respect that program at all. The core of their team is made up of players from the same AAU program and one from a program that shares the same gym as them. So if coaches want to be successful, go start an AAU program and filter your kids into your high school. Look how well it worked for LV Lutheran.
