RECENT VIOLENCE: What can be done?

| | Comments (80) |

With the recent rash of local violence, what can be done to make the streets safe again? And do you have any more fear of attending sporting events, especially at night?

Excellent post. I would like to echo the over sentiments. Th is is an superb document and a must-read.

As well as total Tropicana debacle was left off why? Talking of Tropicana, does the brand new Aol logo remind any person from the rejected Troipcana logo? Personally, I am not a fan with the Aol rebrand. Even though the execution and implementation are outstanding, the precise wordmark is dull, uninspired, and just form of blah. That currently being explained, I concur with many of the other rankings. I am even now in adore together with the city of Melbourne is new id.

Was nota substantial fan of Banco or Fonts but I can see why they get the nod. The rest of the l ist is ideal. Excellent 12 months, good l ist.

Maybe several of the commentors standard d istaste for Aol is stemming from an overlooking on the manufacturers romantic relationship to the internet. A synergetic and harmonious 1st in my opinion.

Neat blog layout! Very easy on the eyes.. i like the colors you picked out

I'll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Hey Viking Fan, I have been to lot of games in which Blair fans have caused problems. What happened at South Pas last year during the boys basketball game. How many times have your fans been rude and unruly. It is not just the neightborhood that is the problem, it is the attitude of the people and the chip on the shoulder that others have that causes a lot of these problems.

OH and by the way your girls basketball team just won league and is having one of the best season in school history. Why isn't the community supporting them. I have been to three of your recent home games and there were more fans from the visiting team then from the Blair side. Support your kids and maybe there would be more positive results on and off of the court.

O-cat,
you are right this has been churning all around the SGV for decade after decade, crossing city limits and hitting near just about anyones backyard. No place is immune or safe.
Stang Fan offers a fairly realistic view..no single magic wand will ever wipe this away. Here in Pasadena the violence rolls through in waves...a lull here and there and then weeks of people on edge.
I fear for my son probably the same way my old man worried about me...not to be pessismistic...but it has become the way of life, an aspect ingrained in SGV living.

Observantcat said:

To answer your question about the Football players checking out of the school. NONE!....As a matter of fact it has gained a few players from the Duarte side of town. I dont think this has spilled into the school. It is more of an outside thing that has really been going on around us much longer than we think. If you recall the kid at TC was shot and killed by a group calling themselves the brown side. Monrovia will surpass this situation and move on to bigger and better headline in the coming months and years. Although these kind of things cannot be ignored it is safe to say that Everyone that needs to be in place is in place to stop future violence and attacts from both sides.

which monrovia players have checked out??

My sister used to live in Monrovia many years ago and I've always viewed the city as a marvelous place. Now it's kind of scary knowing that all of this is going on.

I'm sorry, the photo wasn't formatted correctly.

The Stang Fan said:

Scott,

Sadly, this is a tremendous problem that doesn't really have a foreseeable end. In smaller communities like Monrovia it is most certainly easier to quell than in other areas. However, even though it dies down for awhile it always rears its ugly head and pops back up from time to time, and this is what has happened in Monrovia. WIth as much focus as the community has on this right now, things will die down for the time being, trust me these thugs aren't THAT stupid. But they'll be back again...1, 2, 5, 10 years later.

I'd hate to be so pessimistic about this, but I truly believe that we will not see an end to gangs and gang violence in our lifetime.

With that said, we all must continue to fight for our kids and get as many on the right path as possible. The key is finding out what is a kids interest individually and going from there. Whether it be sports, arts, mechanics, music, you name it, that interest needs to be fostered EARLY and CONTINOUSLY so that the individual kid isn't lured into or impressed by the gang lifestyle. As many of us know, at this time it is impossible to "save 'em all," so let's save the ones we can.

As far as attending games, I have absolutely NO fear in attending high school games.

Several Monrovia Football players have checked out of school because this senseless violence.

Scott,
Brandon went to Duarte not Monrovia. Get rid of that picture.

Viking Fan,
I went to B-Ball game at Blair(vs. Monrovia)a few years ago, that had a shooting after the game. You never know when this stuff will happen.

What can be done? Mandatory community service and sports team participation from kindergarten through 12th grade while interacting with successful people. These guys need more exposure to better role models and to constantly be reminded of more positive living. More involvement with teams should help tear down percieved barriers as well.

No place is much safer than another when this type of senseless, mindless violence is the norm.
16 year old girl buying a pack of gum takes 8 rounds, 64 year old dude on his own front lawn gets sprayed by gunfire.
It is the worst of the wrong place / wrong time theory, and potentially 100% random as far as collateral bullets go
I doubt this round is done yet...revenge sometimes takes forever to play out
I hope I am wrong
PEACE

Honestly, I'm glad tonight's bball game is a home game for us. I would be very nervous about going to Monrovia for a game tonight
