Scott,
I haven't seen all the area teams play, but may I point out that La Salle has defeated La Canada and also San Marino at San Marino.
Their performance against S. Pas at home was not up to their usual play.
The Lancers start league play on Tues. against Cathedral, looking for revenge from the Providence Tourney.
I meant to say 5, my mistake.
the only reason la canada beat us is because our starting setter wasn't playing. we had a big conflict before the game and it was suprising for our team that our starting setter wouldnt be setting for us. and we didnt lose in three. we lost in five. we were up 11-7 fifth game, and we gave it away.
Two things that I thought took SM out of the game was the tough serving by South Pasadena setter Chris Reid and smart power hitting by hitter Tim Tong. It really disappointed me to see David Allen playing the Libero position seeing that he was a great hitter last year, very solid all-rounder and had a devastating jump serve. He played well as a Libero against San Marino, but imagining that South Pasadena team with David Allen as starting outside hitter and Cody Carpenter as returning Libero with defensive experience, this team could potentially make a run to CIF Finals again. However, injuries do happen and I do wish he heals soon and possibly play outside hitter again.
South Pasadena brings tough serving smart hitting and great defense on and off the net with key digs against San Marino.
San Marino played sloppy and still managed to pull close scores in the first two games which is very interesting. It's hard to explain what San Marino does to score points because they compensate height with smart plays and moving the ball around very well. The next time these two teams meet, I'm sure it'll be more than 3 games. Like Coach Terzian said, they expected a 5 game battle and I guess it wasn't San Marino's day.
Looking at Rio Hondo, I would probably rate teams as follows,
1) South Pasadena
2) Temple City
3) San Marino
4) La Canada
5) Gabrielino
Biggest shock thus far though, would be La Canada beating Gabrielino in 3 games.
Gabrielino plays San Marino on Thursday and Temple City plays South Pasadena.
South Pas and Temple City play on Thursday at SPHS. First serve at 4:00 pm.
SP defeated San Marino in 3 games. The match was much closer than the game count indicates. Game 2 went 29-27 in SP's favor and San Marino could have taken that game and tied the match at 1 game all. Match could of gone 5 games, in fact we were expecting a 5 game battle.
