FOOTBALL: Conditioning counts

| | Comments (67) |

Which football program has the best conditioning program in the Pasadena area.

Workout.jpg

Notes: When I was working up in the Santa Clarita Valley, I was impressed with the conditioning programs at the likes of Hart, Canyon and Valencia. Those schools always seemed to be getting stronger and less fatigued as the seasons progressed and usually wore down opponents. They didn't, player for player, always have the best athletes, but the best conditioned.

Stang Fan,

My question to you is: Have you ever played for Muir or even played football? I know I know you "Stang Fan" and you know I'm a sick peson!

Goldenarm said:

The Stang Fan's points and perspective are hard to ignore on this issue...even when inside you wish the kid all the best and are not the kind of person ignorant and vile enough to say I told you so should his decision to tranfer not work out. Entertaining such thoughts are ridiculous. "Siphoning of talent" pretty much wraps it up. I think were I on the Cats staff the last 5 years I would be in serious depression mode seeing the repeated exodus of talent..and later though happy for the kid, wondering "what if" as you read his rushing/passing stats in the morning paper. In some ways the SGV is the incubator of this talent...yet later becomes the backseat spectator.

ADVERSITY...

Is the strenght that makes a football team a group to adapt to the challenge after a negative episode. Therefore, M-town's challenge will be up to the coaching staff and the heart of the players to do what they do best...play hard, run hard, dont quit, and strive to win as a TEAM.

Good luck Cats.

Any player/student has the right to go where they want. It is in the best interest of the student's future educational goal and possibly a career move that is respected by the parents of the child. Life is full of choices and decisions are made toward a positive direction at times. If the QB from M-town decides to go to Amat, then let it be. He must compete with 10 other studs like himself and maybe play JV again in his 10th grade year. Who knows, we can sit hear and blog all we want and say the pros/cons about a kid going to another program. it will be said until the experiment value and the end result impacts the player's decision and Amat's outcome.

All I know is that the introduction is a major factor and variable in any decision in life.

The Monrovia QB is leaving? Philly B., I hear you bro, but I don't share your sentiments. FOr as much back and forth smack talking as I've done with the Cats here on this blog, believe me when I say I sympathize. It's funny, Scott G commented last summer on two highly impressive freshman QB's who would be lighting up the WSGV for years to come. The stud from Monrovia and Dennis (i forget his last name) from Muir. Well Scott, go ahead and replace that "W" in front of the SGV with an "E." The Monrovia kid appears to be headed for Amat and I hear that Dennis is now at Charter Oak.

The question is, will this siphoning of WSGV talent ever end? Of course people will bring up the issues of Monrovia's safety and Muir's academics. And again they will fail to realize that Monrovia's issues, as serious as they are, aren't indicative of the wonderful city and its residents, and that Muir's academic issues are really a result of poor academic preparation at home and not the fault of the adults on campus (my sister is a substitute in the district and has filled me in on the real problem at Muir.)

I do agree with you on one thing though Philly B...I do wish the kid the best of luck, because after all, he is still a 14-15 year-old kid who still has his entire bright future ahead of him. Too bad for M-town fans he'll be one of those "if we only had _________________" players

Anon. 4:46,

Actually if SF would have played in our league last year they would've had two losses: Arcadia and Muir. Remember, Arcadia beat you guys and Muir annihilated Arcadia in a game that was never close. It also took a last minute effort for SF to beat Burroughs AT SF, a team Muir beat 33-3 AT Burroughs.

Do we have an easy, weak league that pales in comparison to the Mission League? Yes. Is SF's schedule the most difficult in the area? Yes. In fact I preached that during the entire season last year. But don't think for a minute that just because your schedule is quite difficult and our league stinks that SF would roll over Muir. ANd please don't assume that Muir is scared of playing SF, nothing could be further from the truth. I have my ideas, true or not, about why they don't and I could very well be wrong. But the fact of the matter is the schools haven't done the area a service by scheduling each other. Anyway you look at it the schools are not in ANY commincations to schedule a game, so to say that SF would "love" to play Muir is more than likely inaccurate.

BTW, Muir by 14. Not that I'm biased or anything....

Goldenarm said:

I read the Robledo comments. I too, wish the kid well and Philly B is correct, it should not derail anything.

Assuming the transfer crap is true, I will go a step further. The QB is leaving behind some dudes he may miss one day, a slew of deep targets and some jerseys most capable of making a swing pass into a 90 yard pass reception in the stat book. No disrespect to Amat, but the Cats could fly next year.
Those who are already penciling in his name above Pat Haden at Amat do the kid no favors. Hopefully he won't get caught up in that crapstorm.

626 Fball,/ SF supporters

I was hoping someone who knows or has participated in the SF offseason program might detail WHY it is a successful, distinguished or at least effective offseason drillfest.
Obviously i would guessestimate because it is organized, established and run by people who believe in it...and have the background knowledge to motivate kids...however, that is a guess.
I have no insults to hurl...just looking for a reason or factors which set SF apart from mediocrity.

I agree with most others here - it all comes down to people.

Stang Fan,
Let's compare schedules. If SF was in your league, they may not lose. The last three years, they started out #1 in the Star-News but played the likes of Notre Dame, Los Altos, Saugus, Loyola, Bishop Amat, Crespi and St Paul(this year D-III champ). They would love to be in the Pacific. As 626 said, they would love to play Muir.

Philly B. said:

Who cares if some tall OB goes to Bishop. I mean when has one player done it all for Monrovia anyways. Good luck to him I hope he does well. But monrovia will do just fine. Im sure we'll have a lot of skilled athletes

Some wealthy schools are like the Yankees...all the money for the best players in baseball and still cant make it to the World Series.

A good program starts with the coaching, parent support, school/staff support, and HEART from the players. By support I am talking about caring for the students within their educational achievements and allowing an all-year round program for the coaching staff/players.There are some schools out in Bullhead AZ that dont have a gym bigger than 10 by 10 feet and they still kick butt in football. You must adapt with the resources, achieve, and accept with what's available within the program. Run with it.

626 football said:

Man you guys will look for any reason to jump on St. Francis. People donate the money, its not like other schools would be against having top facilities, thats just how it is.Also, they have gone 16-1 against the mighty pacific league teams the last 5 years. I think that alone shows how good their offseason program is because the Pacific is the strongest league in the area. Too bad they couldn't play muir, that would really show who is the best.

can you elaborate on what makes the SF program top notch?
People, facilities, drill regimen, all of the above??

ME said:

OK Stud(Below), What school do you represent? You would not want to play St. Francis year in year out. They had one bad season(one more win and they were in the playoffs) and now you want to jump on them. Name a better program year in year out in the Pasadena area!

Anonymous said:

St Francis. It has really shown up on the football field - NOT!

ME said:

St Francis has one of the top programs. The reason: Bonds is from the Santa Clarita Valley(Hart HS) and knows what a good program needs.

New York said:

What counts is simply getting the most out of people (teams). Whether teams are naturally faster or strong, what matters is that they get as strong and fast as they can be.

Players need guidance on how to train specifically for their sports. This is not a body-building session. Doing two hours of bench press and curls will not help much. Neither will long-distance running. Plyometrics are huge. Explosive bursts in about 6 second intervals to replicate a football play. Boyd Epley has published a bunch of useful stuff that local coaches should become familiar with.

burbanksports said:

Both of the Burbank schools have solid off season conditioning programs. Strength and toughness can be found at both schools. What is lacking most years is team SPEED! You either have it or you don't and all the conditioning in the world does not make a 4.6 player go 4.4.

Goldenarm said:

As far as the quality of the facility and weight room carpeting style etc..I recall one workout where our coach (a fball history fanatic) overhead complaining that the floor was too cold and the weight bar had steel splinters protruding...his reply...What a bunch of ^&%%@@###...the four horseman had no weights...they lifted boulders!!! Whether true or not, at age 17 the picture of some Flintstones type lifting program hit home...silencing the complaining and later making for a hilarious quote used at the team banquet.
It is the attitude that matters.

apaches said:

the portraits are of the Iron Men
To become an “Iron Man” for football one must lift a total weight between three
different lifting exercises. The bench press, squat, and the power clean.
900 Lbs for Lineman
850 Lbs for Linebackers
800 Lbs for Defensive Backs and Wide Receivers

ScottG said:

I don't know if I totally agree on the district helping the schools up there. Did they remodel fields and stadiums, yes, but on the cheap, including field turf that floods. The main thing that stuck with me up there were the large booster clubs, which raised money for everything from large game programs to who knows what else.
The other difference is football is a year-round thing up there.
Can things be fixed here, yes, but the work ethic is there with hard-working coaches all over this valley.

What is the significance of the player portraits in Arcadia's weight room?

Anonymous said:

arcadia kids need to work on their spelling. i thought they were at least book smart over at arcadia because they surely arent good at sports

Anonymous said:

St. Francis definately has one of the most intense off season workouts concentrating on explosive and core lifts . Mandatory everyday before school at 6 am from January till spring practice starts. If someone misses too many days they will get dropped to JV lifting and eventually kicked off if they miss anymore. Even the guys that are in other sports are expected to come as much as possible.

Anonymous said:

i would go with coach polikies strength and conditioning program at ARCADIA..There boys have been puttin in some good work since he showed up as it showed with the class of '08

..NO APACHES DOWN^..

New York said:

I bet the teams that consistently have the best offensive and defensive line play also have the best off-season programs. I have a feeling they are highly correlated. This is not to suggest that only linemen need to workout. I just think that the same coaches who are able to produce good lines are usually also able to put together good off-season programs. Like coaching a good line, running a good off-season program can be a long and rarely rewarding process (in the near term). But all of the off-season work also leads to stronger camaraderie.

I remember the University of Nebraska's weight room shortly after Dr. Osborne won his first National Title. The weight room was about 50 yards long, and in the middle were three distinct platforms: Benchpress, Squat and Powerclean. These three were specifically reserved for the players who had surpassed a certain level.

I also remember Osborne stressing the importance of explosiveness and body-composition, noting that every one of his linemen could dunk a basketball.

I dont think high schools need tremendous facilities, they just need tremendous effort and enthusiasm from their players and coaches. The other thing is that programs should fundraise for what they need. Go a couple seasons without brand new uniforms and redirect funds to training equipment. Cut coaching stipends and redirect to a fitness coach, or raise funds for one. At the very least, just make do with what we have. Great weight rooms dont win championships. The work inside does.

FOOBALL said:

I would have to say Arcadia's program is one of the best. They have a mandatory zero period everyday where they run and lift.

Huckster!!!!!!! said:

The reason the Santa Clarita Valley schools have such good programs are, because of the funding by the school district. The Pasadena Unified is the lowest paying district in the state of California and I think that is a shame! The people, who coach in the Pasadena district, do it for the love of the kids and game. The school board in Pasadena is a pure "JOKE"! The whole Pasadena school district should be demolish and rebuilt! Pasadena High has an okay conditioning program, but could always do better. With out proper funding the Pasadena schools will be fighting an up hill battle against all competition! I just know the Bulldogs will be great this upcoming season.

does rio hondo even have a weight room?

Goldenarm said:

Scott,

You are right about Kendell from Blair - (that is according to a couple different kids from Blair I talk with)...he is a beast in the weight room they say.

I know TC is demanding on attendance (off season)and not only participation, but strenous partication, not just dickin around. Sometimes breaking into groups - challenging other groups give that motivation to push harder, and thus a better chance of benefitting from gym time.
I believe there always needs to be an element of tracking to SHOW the athlete progress is being made and that the staff and others are aware of the hard work and sacrifice- even in March. In my day they posted recent max bench weights - and had the "Stud Club" which had an entry weight of 220 and had names going as high as 380.
To go with the lifting TC does some foot-pounding - intermittent mile runs for time and mixed sprints etc...the usual grabag of heartbounding, wheres your second wind stuff most programs are familiar with.
Like most schools - a good portion of players are locked into baseball, wrestling, track and even Volleyball...while their football buddies are busing lunging and squatting without the fanfare of actual competition...just the nature of the scene.

I heard both Alhambra and Arcadia had decent programs..maybe someone can touch on those..

Hands down, how else would they be able to keep up with schools twice their size? Heart and endurance. A little lackluster in the last few years, but definitely a key component to their success.

This was one of the topics that was suggested. I'm sure there are lots of people with opinions. Arroyo's a Tribune school by the way. Perhaps the Burbank schools have gotten better the last few years. They used to have a hard time against the Santa Clarita schools.

Anonymous said:

scott, any chance you will make it out to some area schools to see for yourself and comment on the programs that impressed you?

i've got a good feeling everyone is going to vote for their own school... why wouldn't they right?

someone said arroyo is good. im guessing the teams with the strongest teams year in and year out will have a solid foundation (offseason conditioning) so count in arcadia, muir, st francis and the such. i know they arent in the psn coverage area per say but burbank burroughs seems to have a physical line up front. they were in the foothill just a few years back, any run in with them in the past?
