FOOTBALL: How transfers have hurt or helped the West SGV
A hot-button issue seems to be what was termed as "syphoning of talent" in the West SGV.
It seems Bishop Amat seems to be involved more times than not. How much does the past success of Amat have to do with that? Because, let's face it, Amat was once known as the football factory in the entire SGV.

Questions:
1. Why do players leave the West San Gabriel Valley to play in the East SGV?
2. What other schools draw kids from the West SGV other than Amat?
3. What would make East SGV want to come to West SGV schools?
4. How much is this about kids making the best decision as opposed to the desire to be on a winning team?
5. What can be fixed to keep players from transferring?
6. How does St. Francis, which has lost some good players to the transfer bug, play into this one way or another?
7. How are other sports affected?

Wow, amazing blog layout! How long have you been blogging for? you make blogging look easy.
Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It's very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
Wonderful to read!

I think you can have more than 3 depending on the number of players from the area, but I could be worng. If it is 3, then Tyron Crock, Trump Harrison and Arness Ikner. I just hope some of our other kids can get in.
cut that list in half huck, each school can only nominate three players
Arcadia Fan,
Yes, Pasadena High players will be playing in the East SGV Vs. West SGV game. Pasadena will have Tyron Crockom, Tre Walls, Antuan Morris, Trump Harrison, Takorri and Arness Ikner. It should be another good game this year. I can't wait to see my boys, Kannen Snowden and Mikey Harrell play as well.
Huck, are your pasadena kids playing in the East/West game? We need to pull together as one and win one for the westside this year.
That was a nice thing to say about Golper. The game vs. Pasadena @ PCC this 2008 should be great. I have no doubt that pasadena will compete for a pacific league title next year, expect how do you even start to replace Crockum?
Oh! I for got but, congratulations to “Golper” for signing because he is one hell of a player! I wish him and his parents good luck!
Huckster!!!!!
P.S.
I'm full of love for all! :)
Sfsh92 and East SGV Fan,
I can understand your view and perspective, but fact’s are PHS, Muir and some other WSGV schools have more pro athletes than any school in the ESGV and Saint Francis High school. Now, we are talking about sports, because I think the other school districts offer a better education which pisses me off! I also think schools like Arcadia have been benefiting from the poor academic reputation of our Pasadena schools . When Kevin and Tip took over at their schools, I don’t see kids transferring to our neighboring schools. I guarantee PHS will be playing for the league titles for a while! I hear other people talking about JV teams going undefeated, but the fact to the matter is, PHS has a all freshman team and a all sophomore team with that best going to Varsity after that! Which one of the teams in the Pacific league had freshman and sophomores playing in CIF? Exactly! Pasadena High only!
If “Norte Dame” was so high profile, why wasn’t Brown recruited higher? I’ll tell you why, because he wasn’t a home grown player! Nevada, is not a bad school and that’s where Brown sign, but I can tell you that the kid wanted to go to Oregon and I feel “Norte Dame” coaches could have pushed for him! With out him “Norte Dame” looses more games that it lost this year. Socially and academically, “Norte Dame” and “Saint Francis” are better choices for a young person, but in the “WORLD” could hinder a weak soul.
To be honest, I don’t think ST. Francis would have made the “PLAY OFFS” in the Pacific League! I know all the “Head Coaches” in the Pasadena area personally and no one would shy away from playing St. Francis! I even mean “Marshall”! Bond’s is a coward! We won their passing league tournament and he said he didn’t want us back, because our kids are trying to turn around a loosing program by competed like “DOGS”!
I am the HUCKSTER!
Lance is an example of someone transferring from St. Francis. there were a few factors involved he was not going to play QB, tuition and grades money . think of how great that team wouldve been with him as their running back
Congrats to Todd Golper and his family for his decision to go to UCLA. (I know it's a verbal).
East SGV Fan...
did you know that MUIR sent Lance Mitchell to OREGON STATE last year? Please do some research before you pop off here on the westside.
Is that how you do it in the eastside?
My analysis is that Chris Harris got a scholarship to the school that fits his skills and attributes... regardless of whether or not he was playing at Duarte or Muir.
Where has Charter Oak kids went on to play in the past 10 years? I am just curious.
Congrats to Todd Golper; I know you're reading this, on a verbal commitment to UCLA.
Good Luck to you.
Proof Arcadia kids should stay home, coach Dimalante knows EXACTLY what it takes to get to the next level.
I saw that on scout.com - congrats to Todd!
Arcadia's golper gave a verbal to UCLA.
I'm not sure if any scholarships were offered to those athletes at Charter Oaks who were from the West SGV, but the running back, Chris Harris from Duarte HS got a scholarship to attend Utah State Univ. I don't think him staying at Muir would have gotten him a D1 scholarship. Congratulations Chris!
If the Monrovia faithful are listening, you may want to hit the Trib blog and read the flame job Joe Amat lays on the city of Monrovia.
I guess a couple news reports make someone a visionary on life in the SGV, and in particular, Monrovia...comments basically made M-town a cross between Beirut, Heroin Alley and Corcoran Penententiary (sp)...and "obviously" these factors are the reason a QB would opt to play for Amat. ????
I've been told that it was an oversight, one by a school's person in charge of cutting checks, and one of the school's that said they never got a notice and thought it was paid.
Bottom line, the checks reportedly are in the mail.
Scott,
What have you heard about CIF suspending local schools blair, rosemead and san gabriel mission from all sanctioned competition untill their dues are paid.
Huck
Interesting point about "controlling" the coaches...I know this point can be a valid one.
I was privy to a couple coach/parent conversations several years back...where such topics as "guaranteed" carries per game, kickoff/punt returns and going both ways was discussed...and it wasn't in general terms like one might expect.
How can you say that Brown would have gotten a better offer playing locally. Look at Youngblood from Muir 0 offers. Brown played at one of the best schools in So Cal. The exposure he got from playing with top notch prospects was probably what got him his scholarship. I hate to say it but there is no comparison between Notre Dame and any school in this area.
The reason a lot of Pasadena kids were leaving the area was that, Muir was stacked for playing time. Pasadena and Blair had coaches that were not from the city and couldn’t build or sustain credible programs. Now that, Kevin and Tip are at their respected alma maters I don’t see a lot of kids leaving the area. I think the only way a Pasadena kid leaves the area, if it is for a better education in another school district, but for the most part they think the grass is greener on the other side in the case of sports. When I see Pasadena kids going to “Charter Oaks” or “Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks”, I know they are really going to be “USED” when it comes to athletics’! A lot of parents think they can control a coach if he’s not at one of the top tier programs, so they take their kids to another place. Those area schools are going to take care of their people first and what I mean by that is, the home grown players from their area. I know for a fact, if you take Kannen Snowden, Mikey Harrell of Charter Oak and Thaddeus Brown of Norte Dame, put them on PHS, Muir or Blair each one of those schools would have made a title run with those players. The great thing about Thaddeus going to Norte Dame, I believed it helped him out academically, which is the ultimate goal, but he would have gotten a better scholarship if he had went to one of the area schools. I know, getting any scholarship is great, but getting to go where you want is better!
LP played at baldwin park highm right?
how in the world did bishop amat NOT get lawrence phillips to play there?
Likely there is a wide range of reasons why kids transfer. I mean, in some situations it could be anything from divorce to academics. Some that appear 100 athletic - could be just that or not. It would be interesting to look at Amat's last 5 years and note how many out of area transfers are on their roster. Is it 10% or 50?
Some of the Monrovia bloggers could roll out a credible list for sure..including schools not normally mentioned as beneficiaries...like Cantwell for instance.
The horizon promises the same for SGV...and that sucks. We all know the enjoyment of seeing the rise of gifted area athletes - and the eventual following of them religiously as they progress up the food chain. Many, many moons ago you played where you lived...the % of transfers was far less, almost rare.
let's not forget that chris-mac played for muir his freshman year either
Well if you are talking about big time players transfering lets not forget about Chris McCalister. He started at running back his sophomore year at St Francis before transfering to PHS. I think one of the reasons that kids leave SF is that they want to coast through school. The academics at St. Francis are no joke. For the most part your schedule is set for you the whole time you are at St Francis. Their is no wood shop or metal shop or auto shop all the classes you take help prepare you for college.
I'll start us off on a good one.
How about Arcadia losing Chris Rix to Bishop Amat?
I know, I know, he didn't win the Gatorade High School Player of the Year or anything like that but the way HE changed the recruiting scene, (i.e. committing to play at Florida State during his Junior year) has got to be one of the biggest "game-changing" transfers the West SGV has ever seen.
