FOOTBALL: Passing Leagues

| | Comments (156) |

We're just a few months away from the summer tradition known as passing leagues and tournaments.

Passing Leagues.jpg

I did full blown coverage last year while Freddy was on vacation, and this time around, I'm planning on doing some differnent things, such as daily videos and daily blogs from the numerous sites.
The main idea of the coverage is to bring sort of a mini training camp report on as many schools as possible in preparation of the season.
Here's the question: What are the benefits of passing leagues, and do they necessarily indicate a successful season to look forward to?
My thoughts: Passing league and tournaments, although there is no offensive line and no pads, gets offenses in rhythm, especially those teams that tend to pass a lot.
These competitions also help defensive backs get into a groove as well.
In terms of success, you can get a feel for teams that have talent. I watched Muir defeat Hart in a passing tournament in Claremont, something not too many schools can lay claim to. The team speed helped. Other schools like Long Beach Poly haven't always looked that good in passing leagues, but we all know what they do once the season starts.
Individual talent, like Dietrich Riley of St. Francis, tend to stand out in a crowd during these events as well.
I had the opportunity to see some players develop in front of my eyes during the summer, like La Salle quarterback Chase Rettig. He went from looking like the sophomore he was in the first competition at Baldwin Park High School to throwing 40-yard touchdown darts just a few weeks later.
So there is plenty of upside to passing leagues. How much it tells about successful teams are going to be is up for debate.

Should most of you appear outside the US for data, as opposed to beating one another up over the head with arguments fit for the Stone Age or the Paranoia Ward at Bellevue, you would locate that most of the planet outside your borders believes in uncontested evidence of Climate Change. Check numbers for summer water ice coverage within the Arctic, receding glaciers, melting permafrost releasing methane which you can truly light up from bubbles coming via water, ask the Inuit who have inhabited the region for thousands of years, check insect, plant, animal species moving north where they had never been noticed just before, and also you can take your - faulty or not - thermometer and stick it... inside your drawer. The entire point is that people will believe the "facts" that support their lack of appetite for change. Live in a smaller residence, personal a smaller car, drive much less, save energy, etc... Why not believe people who say I don't need to do any of this, and their aguments, nonetheless fallacious they might be, to help it?

This particular short review helps make it's exasperation show. The following comment careens hurriedly directly into pet peeves that contain almost nothing to do with the blog, focusing rather on generalizations with regards to woman, contests, bicyclists, together with an ethnic background reviewed that have an adjective implemented being a noun. A major coded offending remark is included, followed straight away by accusations of a “race card” getting played.

Stang Fan and The real hsfbfan,
The Pasadena High school, staff is young and they made an enormous amount of mistakes which cost us 6 games. The Dominquez game is probably the only game we should have lost the whole year. What I saw in the Pacific league last year was that, each team made great spurts at different times of the season. Arcadia started off hot and got shaky after the Pasadena game. Burroughs started off slow and finished strong. Muir started off slow and got to league did really well and finished weak with Hoover and got (LUCKY) in the Rose Bowl! We should have blown yawl out! But hey, we got inside the 10 yard line 5 times and didn’t try any field goals; to add to all that we shorten the game on our selves by running the ball in the second half! Pasadena started slow, did well once it got to league and finished strong in the playoffs. The stat’s you pointed out is good for an argument, but I know you were one of those Stang fans that were praying to “GOD” over a football game in the “Bowl”. It’s all good, because the streak yawl got over us is going to take some heart and guts to end! We’ll be back! Guarantee!

Stang Fan,

You pointed out some great facts and your stats tell it all. I should be punished for making such comments but I will stick by them. I certainly don't think PHS staff is a good staff, but I was just going by pure talent. Wouldn't you agree with that, probably not? Its obvious that Muir had the whole package.

The Stang Fan said:

the real hsfbfan,

Well, at least you've been added to Huck's Christmas card list....

Dude, you are going to really have to explain yourself with that one. At least you were right about one thing, Muir fans will most definitely deny it, as will most of the Pacific League brethren.

In order for PHS to have been the best team in the league, Coach Mills woud have to be the WORST coach in the state! And I don't believe that he is, do you? Because the best team doesn't lose two league games. THe best team doesn't give up 40-something points to Arcadia. The best team doesn't struggle against Burroughs before ekeing out a win. The best team doesn't wilt under the pressure of the Rose Bowl to score a single TD.

In fact the best team goes undefeated through league. The best team thoroughly dominates both Arcadia and Burroughs. THe best team limits PHS, Arcadia, and Burroughs to 26 meaningful points (Arcadia's last two TD's came against the benchwarmers). The best team racks up the All-League votes. The best team goes in losing at halftime of the Tussle only to completely shut the dogs out in the 2nd half and pull out a victory. Bottom line, the best team last year was clearly John Muir High School.

Here's what ultimately seperates Muir from phs last year.....defense. Muir had it and phs didn't. Period. That's what wins championships right? They had a better passing attack, and we had a better rushing attack. Our passing was definitely better than their rushing, and our special teams gets the nod too. So again hsfbfan, how do you figure they were the best?

I think the sports parent has a valid point. High School sports has become big business and where your child attends high school can determine if, or how much a parent pays for college. Why would a parent who has a child with talent send a kid to a school that does not fit their needs? Why would a parent send a child to a losing program/OK program or a lower division just because they might have gone to that school or live in a certain area? If a winning program offers a child good academics, a safe environment and a history of students receiving scholarships why are they looked down on? Being on a winning team most times makes one look better than they really are and that translates to dollars and cents for that family. Anon 6:33 you speak as if you have no children, schools and coaches benefit from the talent of these students parlaying into better jobs with higher pay. When we break it down I think we all must admit there is a level of everyone using each other. I'm not saying they don't care about the student but not many will pay to see a student solve a math problem. Schools make money and receive notoriety because of these kids, so it is necessary for the parent to make the right choice for their family. The way PUSD is going no one can blame parents for looking for something better.

If you really want to know why we go into debt and work two jobs in order for our kids to not attend public schools in the Pasadena school district and attend private schools in other cities - go no further than reading the entries in this blog.

No - it's not the kids ... it's the pathetic parents who ruin it for the kids whether it is at a high school level (high school football) or at a tee ball game where you have some idiot talking about hitting the home run while they were in the 7th grade at Wilson Jr. High back in 1976.

It's just really sad ....and the most sad thing about it is that these same parents are the ones who blog on this forum talking about schools glory years in the 70's 80's and 90's.

It's one thing to be ignorant because you don't know any better - it's another thing to be ignorant and be proud of it.

what does dissention mean?

Goldenarm said:

NY,
Many moons ago the Alhambra Moors won the Watts Summer Games, basically the Super Bowl of passing leagues. The Games included the best of the City teams. With the season nearing, the Moors were ranked 3rd in CIF, behind powerhouse St. Paul.
Long story short, some bald corn-fed Catholics from Servite ripped Alhambra 27-0 in preseason, sending the Moors spiraling toward an eventual 3-6 record in the old Pac League.
Pass they could, but with a line unable to run block,a D lacking aggression, overseen by a coach who bred dissention...the Watts Games trophy meant next to nothing. You need the whole package to win, and passing league success could even lead to a false sense of "we are
bad ass"
if the coaching staff later
allows
apathy and false confidence to take hold.

the real hsfbfan said:

Huck,

This may hurt because PHS did not win the Pac title but pasadena was the best team last year in the pacific league, even better than muir. Muir fans will deny it and arcadia fans will think I am uncle tom, yet it's the truth.

Huckster!!!!!!!!! said:

the real hsfbfan,

Okay, real talk! They whipped us up front pretty good! PHS made some mistakes in the first half that let them get off the hook, to keep them in that spread offence. This would have played right into our game. Arcadia did what they were supposed to! I’m a serious “homer” who likes to start “$hit” but your point is the truth and the Ref’s had nothing to do with it! I just like a lot of “dark humor” these people are so simple.

Pasadena High School is a program that has finally cleaned the cob webs out and restacked our shelves to start back eating and competing on a serious level again, so when you see me ranting about some “nothing stuff” I’m shooting at a lot of envious Pasadena people who hide on this blog to say some “$hit” themselves about the “Dogs” and my bro! It’s hard for them to give Kevin Mills his proper respect for taking over a (1-29) program, back to fighting for the Pacific league title and gunning for a CIF title; oh, lets not for get about the great teaching job he does too.

New York said:

Passing league is okay as long as it does not take time away from summer conditioning, which is more important.

A QB playing catch with WRs without shoulder pads on does not provide a realistic look. WR´s can not reach as high when wearing shoulder pads and QBs can not throw as hard or far when wearing shoulder pads. It´s the same reason I hate seeing longsnappers practice without their shoulder pads on. I think success in passing league games can give false hope and allow a coach to overlook what his team really needs to work on.

Passing league probably does a bit for set recognition for defenses and allows QBs and WRs to make sight adjustments and audibles.

In other words, I disagree that it allows teams to get their timing down. If anything, it may throw the timing off.

Passing league should be used for the mental exercise of making reads as well as the very important skill of communicating to teammates. And don´t sacrifice time in the gym and track for passing league games.

the real hsfbfan said:

Huck,

Let's talk X's and O's for a minute and let's get away from this name calling stuff.

I was at the arcadia game. Arcadia won for one reason. Arcadia held the ball the entire 2nd half because they went back to the "I" formation and there was nothing pasadena could except getting blown off the line of scrimage. In the first half, arcadia was in their spread formation but it wasn't working against PHS quick secondary.

It wasn't the refs, bro. It was because PHS did not have tough kids up front, plain and simple. Since PHS did have the ball much in the 2nd, PHS was pressured and attempted to go for home run balls and went 3 and out.

To: this is a travesty….i offer no congratulations to nobody. This kind of thing always happens when…..“YOUR STUPID”!

You get it? This is so funny!!!!!!!

I look at some of you weak individuals and shake my head! I really have to be drunk, just to let you weak minded “souls” feel superior every now and then!

As for Kevin, feeling like he got robed, we can always pull up game tapes and look at when the calls were made and the actual call. See, the “EYE” in the sky never lies! I don’t see how “CIF” officials let these Ref’s do it every single year! No need to cry, because we just need to score so many touchdowns to where the Ref’s can’t help the other team. Oh, we need to stop them too, but help is on the way!

Arcadia won the game, but PHS had the better squad!

Muir game too, because we let you bums off the hook! That was a fumble in the end zone and the Ref’s gave yawl a break by giving us a safety.

Bottom line, we haven’t beat neither team in years for a number of reasons, but I know Stang Fan will never admit it to me or Big A, but they both know the Pacific league guard is in the midst of a change and I’m not talking about “John Burroughs’s”!

I don’t drink forty’s anymore! I moved up to “Belvedere” Vodka, because it goes down a little easier and makes me a little more crazier! A lot of you people hide behind these names on this Blog to get your little shots in and I think its lovely. I feel so sorry for you…..It must hurt being you!!!!! I’m laughing all the time on this thing.

Racism? You can not be serious. Bro, have you EVER heard of something called an ANALOGY. After you read what I wrote you seriously thought I was calling you a racist? Hilarious!!! Your vacuousness is astonishing.

Look, my post had absolutely nothing to do with racism. I metaphorically compared you to "closet racists" who are not publicly open with their hate because of your "silent support" of the Huckster. Your "support" of Huck is troublesome, especially since you have chastised and admonished others on this blog in the past for far lesser statements than Huck has made. If you want to criticize me for calling you out, at least get it right. Let me spell it out so there is no confusion....you are a H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-T-E. Huck calls a fellow blogger a "drunk" and a "dummy" and no response from you. He also disrespects a kid on Arcadia's team and Big A responds, yet nothing from you....again. Then, somebody pipes up and calls the Huckster a hooligan, and here you come with your selective scolding:

"No need to take personal attacks against anyone on this BLOG. The freedom of expression and an opinion must be respected. This is why we have the blog...that said, lets not start the name calling."

That, my dear friend, is what I call bullsh**! Trust me when I tell you that the Huckster can more than fight his own battles without you. Oh, and by the way, thanks for respecting my "freedom of expression" and my "opinion." I do not support Huckster's opinion regarding players going to Arcadia or other schools. Or any type of racial ideas. I was refering to the USE of BLOG names instead of ANONS.

In reference to my post about name calling was meant as a general statement for all bloggers and to start talks about valid arguments about HS football. I would rather see non-racial attacks against anyone. Yes, I grew up in the hood of Pasadena and I lost several friends and a cousin to gang violence shootings in the 80's and 90's. So before you start pointing fingers, I suggest you get your story straight and have supporting evidence of any alledge charges.

Man, I had respect for your comments most of the time, not anymore. You love to stir the pot and post your HATE toward Pasadena HS with great heart. I guess you were punked by some PHS players back in the 70's and now the world and PHS players/students must pay the price. Like I asked before, why soo much HATE toward PHS.

ALL I have is love for Muir, Blair, Marshall, and PHS.

Arcadia also had a kicker go to Hawaii then Colorado in the early '90s Neil Vaskarutcian (sorry about the spelling). I played with him at PCC. The reason he left Hawaii was he had some guy named Jason Elam kicking in front of him.

The Stang Fan said:

BTW Huck, mix in some more players from the 2000's please. Most of those cats you named are at least 30 years-old and up. I thought you were putting together an "All-90's team" bro. Talk about "blast from the past."

The Stang Fan said:

LMAO!!!

Have you ever seen those movies where a troubled youth creates a seemingly childish "human trap." You know, the ones where the bad kid digs a big hole in the front yard and covers it with a net and some leaves, and you're thinking, "Who in the hell is gonna fall for that?" Next thing you know, some poor slovenly sap comes lumbering through the yard, doesn't attempt to walk around the BIG pile of leaves and, OOPS, falls unexpectedly right to the bottom amateur pit. Well, Huck is holding a shovel and a camera and is snickering behind the bush as his elementary trick has worked to perfection. Guys, it's called "negative attention," something many of us learned in our basic child development classes.

When will folks learn?

Dawwger,

My frustration doesn't lie with Huck AT ALL. As we all well know...dude is CRAZY! My frustration actually lies with you. You've critized others on this blog, including myself, for things that we have posted. However, your "boy" and fellow alum is somehow beyond reproach? Name calling? That's weak bro. Someone critizes or calls Huck (who happens to be a grown-a$$ man) a bad name and all of a sudden you want people to keep it calm? Bullsh**. Does he have some incriminating photographs of you in high school? Was he that cool kid you always looked up to? Or, is anything he says fine because he happened to don that horrificly ugly red and white uniform you both treasure so much? And since you know SO much about Pasadena and "hood life" did you also happen to notice Huck's rephrasing of his name to the "Buckster," which any average Pasadenan knows is clearly a "Blood" reference. He used this new name, ironically, after he just acknowledged that we blacks will be stronger once the Bloods and Crips cease to exist.

My pops always told me that closet racists were twice as bad as the Klan, because the Klan was at least open with their hate. Huck is profoundly open with his craziness, and at least we all know it. However, you Dawwger are worse because you support that sort of behavior with your defenses of Huck and your overall inaction. Terribly disappointing, I must admit.

All these kids had earned rides.... All of this is proof that arcadia just doesn't coach, they provide channels and avenues for the kids. They make highlight tapes, talk to college coaches, and they write reference letters for jobs. It's a program that cares.

THAT PHS USED THEM!!!

ADMIT IT YOU "HOOLIGAN" that YOU ARE A FRAUD!!!!

CROCKAM should have gone to arcadia!!! see the love WALKER was getting?!?! Crockam is TWICE the PLAYER WALKER IS AND HE DIDNT GET JACK SQUAT!!

That could have been him!! Send Crockam to Temple City (Reed to USC), send him to Monrovia (Just sent a RB to Wyoming, Also in '97 Akil Harris to UCLA) send him to La Canada (Lavelle Peterson, Utah)

Listen up Huck, this is WHY YOU"VE LOST 13 TUSSLES IN A ROW or something ridiculous like that. This is why you have to come drunk into Arcadia's locker room at halftime drunk and wanting to fight them. ITS BECAUSE OF YOU AND PEOPLE LIKE YOU AT PHS, IN PHS' CULTURE!!

When your son asked you that night, why all the comotion, why all the fuss... what did you tell them. Did you lie HUCK? Did you tell them that "Daddy had to much to drink. That I am a FRAUD. I tell everyone to "be happy, don't worry" but I MYSELF AM AN ANGRY DRUNK!!

PASADENA DESERVES BETTER!!!

In the months between August and December this newspaper should change its name to the MUIR Star News or the BLAIR Star News because during those months the word PASADENA and everything about it is meaningless because you are associated with it!!!!

Stinks to see kids trying to leave their respective hometown schools. I hope the remaining Monrovia kids stay. If they truly feel unsafe at Monrovia -- that is another question. However, If they are simply leaving because they lost a few guys to transfer already - I would look down on that, considerably. Just because your team might have a down year doesn't justify you leaving your school and hometown high and dry. Case in point - Arcadia may have a down year - yet you don't see Golper looking around trying to find a better stage to play on.

I'm afraid that you folks got Huck all wrong. I believe that you all really do not know what you are up against. Clearly, Dawwger does, which is why, good or bad, he simply hops onto Huck's coattails and goes for the "glorious" ride.

Listen, Big A, you will never, ever, ever, EVER, "win" when stacked up against the Huckster. There is no winning. YOu know how some people say that God's answers are way to complex for humans to comprehend....well, though I am not comparing God and Huck by any stretch of the imagination, Huck's answers and his philosophy of life are simply way too complex for the common man.

Some of you even thought that he was just some sort of "regular" high school fan. Au contraire mon frere, how wrong you were. His adoration for all things "red and white" is quite frankly a sickness. Some say that that type of fanaticism is over the top and uncalled for. Others, usually other myopic phs fans and imtimidated administrators, laugh it off as simply a pure love for one's alma mater. Let's just say that if there was an association for fanatical high school hooliganism (as in European soccer) the Huckster would be it's president and founding member.

Here's my advice to anyone who is offended by anything the Huckster says......just enjoy the show! Because when you take a step back and really contemplate the completely assinine statements he makes, it actually is quite comical and a tremendous source of stress-relieving, gut-wrenching laughter.

Huck........nothing but love for you bro......nothing but love! We are just all trying to catch up dog.

Arcadia is not a safe place either, so don’t even start that! Especially, if these players are African American which every single one of us is under attack! I don’t dream up these things, because they are a major concern in my household and my community (close and afar)! You people have your own selfish motives and agendas for the Monrovia kids going to Arcadia, because everyone in the Pacific is going to run a muck on yawl. Gloper is a great talent, but we all know in football you need a team! With or with out, Monrovia players, PHS is stacked! We beat the #2 seeded team (Chaffey) in the playoffs with 7 original varsity players out and 4 of them were starters, they were replaced by 3 freshman and 6 sophomores’ who played their asses off! To be very honest, the Monrovia players would be better served going to PHS, because it’s our time people! Competition get’s you to the USC’s and other colleges. They don’t need Arcadia to go to USC or any other college! Arcadia needs them to help out one of their home grown guys look good on his finial high school stage and to keep your school some what competitive since we are back! I know you guys got a streak on us and you can feel good for one more year, but I’ll tell you, when we bust open that streak respect will be a thing of the past!

Well put HUCKSTER!!!

I have always used my name on this BLOG:

Bulldog PHS 1988, DAWG, and most recent: "DAWWGER"

Proud of the SGV Blog and Scott and Fred have done a great job. I wish this blog was around back in the 80's. Anyhow, many players from Muir, PHS, Monrovia, and Duarte are related in some form. I went to school with Marquise William's mom and uncle at PHS. The Crutchfield's played at Muir. And so and so on. I remember some cousins playing against each from Muir, PHS, and Blair. And not to mention, Duarte and M-Town. The older kid Canada played for M-town a few years ago, now the younger brother is playing for Duarte. So, many students bounce around from the aforementioned schools. This has been going around since the 80's. A lot has to do with family, economics, and society factors. Sometimes, when players switch to a rival school, it makes the game more fun to watch. Just like when M-town played against Sacred Heart/Cantwell in the playoffs of the first round. There was a RB for them that played at M-town for 3 seasons before his senior year. Is all FUN.

I don’t work for the Pasadena Unified School District, but I’m a true Alumnus from Pasadena High! I’m not like a lot of these people on the blog, who has never suited up or played football! You used Anonymous, because like a lot of us, we like to throw rocks when the other person is not looking and put our hands behind our backs like nothing has never happen. I use my name, because there is nothing to hide! I work, pay taxes, take care of my family and eat bums like you for dinner and lunch! My son doesn’t have to go to Pasadena High, because I’m going to be rooting even harder this year! If anyone on this blog can find two players at Pasadena High or John Muir High that doesn’t have love for me I swear, I will never “Blog” again!

If this is all true - your statements on looking at the "new incoming talent" pretty much blow me down.

2008 should be, or should have been the Wildcats year - without doubt. I am talking CIF kinda year. I agree that a core of solid talent remains. So many of us have seen the freshman class (juniors next season)come up and mature - to know the wealth of strength and speed within that group. 19 -1 or something along that order.
Hopefully these rumors are just that. Having neighbor schools bulk up on M-town talent is someone's dream at the expense of another's nightmare.

This could be a blessing for some of the Kids that have needed change in their attitudes as far as being pre-maddona's. Big A, If this rummer is true, I will make you a personal bet that this kid breaks all of arcadias single season rushing records. You will have to see him to believe him...He is 6'2 and has a stride like a race horse...he weighs roughly 215lbs...if you line has blocking capabilities of a well conditioned team this kid could run all night....I hope my friend is wrong and this kids family keeps him at Monrovia but if not I hope him and Arcadia all the luck....Who knows maybe some of his friends may follow behind...I think that this will be a temporary setback for the Cats...with all of the talent coming from Santa Fe jr. High and Clifton Middle School we could bounce right back in a couple of years...

For now I will call this a Rumor, but from I am hearing you guys might just be recieving the greatest transfer of them all. Marquise Williams is rumered to go to Arcadia: If this is so I will give you guys the nod not only in the Pacific league but the CIF div. Finals as well. Due to the unfortunate climate change at Monrovia High, Most of the parents aren't allowing their children to be targets for Hispanic Gangs and the City of Monrovia is through trying to consider alternatives to the recent violence. It is unfortunate that Families that established roots some for more than 100years in this city have to go out like this. I hope that whoever the new coach is will take the Bull back by the horns and turn this thing around in the next year or so.

Scott,

Good intro. At any level, a timed passing attack is nearly impossible to defend against. Balls let fly before the receiver breaks timed to coincide with the exact back foot stoppage of a QB's 3,5 or 7 step drop. Of course, you need an arm strong enough to flat line a 10yd out...and a couple sure-handed receivers.

Interesting thing for TC is both QB candidates for next year are playing baseball right now...so any practice will be happening much later.

Great point about DB's - the passing leagues offer an excellent time for coaches to see what skills need work and what kids are in tune with footwork and rotating in coverage. Oh yeah..and the word of the day.."don't let that dude get behind you!"

GloucesterCoach said:

Passing League games are definitely beneficial. Like you said Scott about rhythm and timing it definitely helps to scrimmage. I personally felt it helped me as a defensive player to get use to the different coverages and practice how to react to different offensive formations. It also gave us a good idea of how we stood against schools that we didn't play in the regular season.

I don't know if you can really read into how successful a season will go off of how good a passing league season you have. I think it can point out weaknesses that you can improve on or it can expose lack of speed in skill positions but if a team is more run oriented anyways, it doesn't really tell much.
