FOOTBALL: What are some of the best stadiums in the area
This was one of the topics which was brought up, so here we go.
Personally, I like St. Francis's Friedman Field. It has a nice intimate feel to it with the field being close to the stands. Arcadia's is also good one, especially when the fans pack 'em in. San Gabriel's apparently is going to be re-done this year so the Matadors will be playing all their games on the road. Two of the other ones I liked, although there is no press box, are Temple City and Monrovia. Good old-style stadiums.

Above: Don't you wish every area stadium looked like this one? I do.
Question: What are your favorites?
Here are a couple of Dallas area stadiums I found. I couldn't find one with a good view of stadium seats and luxury boxes, but you get the idea.

Above: John Clark Field in Plano, Texas.

Above: Highlander Field in Dallas. I lived close to this one for about a year. Lots of stadium seats. Most JCs in the area would love this stadium.

Nice post, I've learned some new bits of knowledge from you.
I started training with kettlebells a few years ago, and now I'm totally hooked. Most of the info on 'bells is getting more and more accurate because more people are getting into this style of training. It's taking over the world!
Thanks a lot.
Who in hell imagined developing a mosque at ground zero was probably a good idea? I'm no great fan of either Glen Beck or Sarah Palin yet , in comparison with Obama and his ridiculous governing administration, these two are prodigies, get real U . s, there is certainly a little odd stuff going on. Claire.
Great post!

Thanks NY for the not so subtle dig...I guess until 1955 they deserve full faith and credit for the history of Roosevelt field.
I think the split and ensuing rivalry only adds to the chronicles. It is something that both schools take a lot of pride in and deep down (despite the facial attacks) fosters a lot of mutual respect. It is something that I, as a So Pas grad cherish from my time there.
The city as a whole recognizes and takes great pride in the stadium between Diamond and Meridian. It is a great symbol of the town itself.
Moor field is a pretty good place to play or see a game. I had heard they rebuilt the locker rooms (both visitor and home) but one poster said that was not true.
The locker rooms were both dark, damp and always smelled like a giant sock. And I am talking a well worn, unwashed sock. You would expect Sigourney Weaver might film Alien 4 in there, because you never knew what creatures were behind the walls of steam hanging in the air. The grandstands were placed INSIDE the track, putting the action fairly close to the spectators.
What about St Paul and "THE PIT"
Bayou Vol,
Should San Marino get half the credit for that tradition?
One thing I used to really appreciate about South Pas was their band. All jokes aside. South Pas played the Star Wars song like none other. It was great back then.
As far as tradition and atmosphere, So Pas has to be near the top of the list. The hillside fans in the N endzone, the home-side full of orange and black, built in the 1940's, beautiful hills behind, the iconic water tower visible above it all, named for our "big stick" president (Teddy Roosevelt - who gave an address there).
I realize that the numerous CIF titles are a bit dusty, but the stadium and field is an impressive array on a Friday evening.
Wow!
Amen to that! I would like to also add, if more PUSD official’s children went to these public schools in Pasadena and with more parent participation probably makes it even quicker!
Winning starts at home when parents take an active role in their kids and their community. When enough parents mobilize, show up and demand results, things get done.
I will totally agree with you on that "New York"! But again, you usually have a great conditioning coach when you got great facilities, because the administration wants top notch personnel to reflect the whole concept of winning! Winning, starts with the (Principal) administration, AD, Coaches and players! In that order!
Having an adequate fitness center and conditioning coach is more important than a nice stadium.
Notafan,
There are only 2 seasons: Football season and the off season. Get over it.
I will tell you this! A great stadium or field doesn’t make a great team, but a good program (team) with a nice stadium and field sure puts a little extra incentive for the kids that’s playing and wanting to come to that program! I’m willing to go out on the limb and say, if “PHS” and “MUIR” had the same facilities as “ST. Francis” “San Marino” or “South Pasadena” a lot of kids would stay in Pasadena and not attend private schools in the surrounding cities. I know, education and academics is the first and foremost, but great facilities play a major part too.
Use the city parks, elementary schools and middle schools for soccer and everything else-even put turf in those places. Then there is no problem with having a natural grass football field.
Anyone would rather play on good grass but the problem is that there are very few school around that can maintain their grass properly. High schools use their fields rather frequently and rent them out to youth soccer team etc.so grass fields usually look like trash. And most players I've talked to would rather play on artificial grass fields anyways. But overall, having a good field or stadium does not make a team great.
Playing HS football on phony turf is like taking a shower with a raincoat on. A whole generation of kids will never know the real deal. Mud, slipping, grass stains, August fresh-cut smells, a little hard dirt in late season...it's what makes the game sensory, fun, and a little unpredictable. Plus turf is a heat nighmare for day games. If you like turf over grass, you probably would like Mc Donald's over Pie and Burger, too.
St. Francis has the best field by far nothing gets a player pumped up more then seeing all those people in the stands and on the balconies.
The field turf offers a lot of benefits. Mainly less injuries and you do not need spend time maintaining grass.
You definately dont get that wonderful feeling of stepping onto fresh grass and also the lines from soccer are annoying and distracting.
Having played at St. Francis I definately prefer playing on the artificial turf.
Maybe the schools should spend the money on top coaches instead of turf? I don't remember TC playing on turf in the 70's. Muir hasn't needed turf to produce winning teams. Coaching, some talent, chalk, grass seeds and water is all you need.
Back to my question...fess up, fellas. All the newbie dads and overbearing know-it-all Soccer Moms rave about phony turf, how you can see the lines better, how it's better for soccer kiddies, how it saves money on water...yawn...please. Let's be honest. It takes a HUGE element of real football away. Think about it...when you turn on the boob tube, would you rather watch a game on grass or turf? Now man up and ast your vote, and i don't want to hear about non-football issues.
Don't refer to La Salle's Lancer Field as a "stadium." It will rile up the neighbors who opposed the lights. One of their arguments to keep La Salle from lighting their field was that La Salle was stealthily building a stadium behind their back in their pristine neighborhood.
Hey Stang Fan: Thanks for the compliment, I take pride in seeing the little things...I'm not a field snob, either. I see beauty in tight confines, history and character. Because of this, I'll take a good field over winning anytime. Good teams come and go. Fields are forever.
I will take a consistent winner over a nice stadium. In many circumstances, though, a consistent winner will generate enough funds and interest to build good facilities.
My top five.....
1. St. Francis- Gotta love the atmosphere, the hills, and the private school moms.
2. Monrovia- Way cool view of the mountains and the "M"
3. South Pas- The home field stands are awesome.
4. Arcadia- Location is great & has lot of history with the arcadia invite, but lacks stands.
5. La Salle- This is a up and coming stadium
Now there is a real high school football fan. Great post anonymous 9:20! Unfortunately, you are right about the PUSD schools.
Let me throw this at you only because I'm bitter...lol...would you rather have a consistent winner with a crappy stadium or an average team with great facilities? Obviously, we would all love to have both, so don't ride the fence.
Great topic.
In order (although turf fields looks good they are still for sissies, c'mon admit it, guys):
(1) Agree with St Francis as top dog, love the hillside and intimacy.
(2) South Pas, WPA stadium from 1940s, great history, concrete rocks all, great elevation and atmosphere, cool old locker rooms underneath
(3) San Marino, clean and together, away from distracting freeways and a great view of mountains
(4) Poly, you feel like you are at an Ivy league tennis party with BBQ, love those day games, play smear in the end zones with your kids during games
(5) Monrovia, lots of history, great seating angles, love the "M" on mountain, great view
(6) Rio Hondo Prep, dig the tight sidelines and the colored end zones, old school all the way
(7) Schurr, up and comer, like the hilltop neighborhood
(8) Moor Field, 80 year history has got to be worth something, stands and field need a lot of love, however
These folks get big deductions for being too hot, too flat, too boring, too far from action, and having no character at all: Temple City (though love that 70's win streak), Rosemead, El Monte, Arcadia, PHS, Marshall, Arroyo,
Some OK fields but deductions for freeway noise/carbon monoxide inhalation (ruins game): La Canada, Mountain View, Duarte, Keppel, Muir*(see below for Muir).
Fields with good potential: La Salle (intimate), San Gabriel (good stadium on east side), Maranatha (interesting setting)
Hopeless: Blair, Marshall, Muir
PCC - College field, doesn't count.
C'mon, grade for atmosphere and history, not for heat and freeway offramp-type hothouses.
Not a fan, We're doing one football post a week. Not covering other sports well? You must not be reading the paper. We've covered plenty of baseball, as well as volleyball, softball, track and will do tennis come playoff time. We even ran a recap of what happened in diving over the weekend. What sport would you like covered? Do you complain on the Tribune blog as well? They do a weekly football post also. I used to resist doing football posts out of season, ask the football posters, but there is year-round interest in football.
Goldenarm,
One nice thing about PCC is its proximity to Tops. That huge box of fries with a burger can make the Friday night complete (with football of course).
notafan,
FOOTBALL has a 365 day season, it just happens to peak after September.
getreal
Blair looked pretty good under the lights at PCC though, even with those nasty colored helmets. Bad thing about that stadium is the Parking Nazi's - dudes will nail you with a parking ticket on any level, anytime.
Notafan,
Baseball is boring. Get over it. Football is exciting and is rampant across the SGV.
Baseball takes 3 hours of waiting, praying for a hit, and some more waiting.
Football is 1-3 hours of bone-crushing hits, teamwork, physical and athletic play.
That's why football is talked about year-round.
It's the best sport their is.
It's barely baseball season and you're already talking football? Just because you can't cover other sports very well doesn't give you the right to forget about them.
Sfhs92,
Well, one of the problems with the wealthy graduates is that, if they donate for a field it must go through the athletics department to be split between all the athletic teams. I don’t have a problem with that, but if “Chris Mc Calister” gives money to the football program for a new stadium then it should solely go there! With a new stadium at Pasadena High school the school gets all the revenue, which in turn would upgrade all the programs at the school. The other thing is, if one school gets upgraded then all must be upgraded, which doesn’t make sense to me if they don’t all have the same student population. Athletics is education and to say they have bigger needs else where is just a bunch of bull$hit! The teachers are not getting hefty salaries, no busing anymore and the class rooms are over crowded, so what pressing needs are being met? When money is put into the athletic programs it gives the school, student body and the community pride! Which I think would raise a more conscious effort of the students to participate in extra curricular activities! This would also keep these young people out of gangs and hanging around the schools more and staying involved with edgucation. Everyone loves nice facilities and The City of Pasadena has way too much money for our schools to be so down trodden! I almost feel like it is purposely designed, but hey in these days and times a cookie is a car!
St. Francis has the best stadium in the area hands down.
As far as the RHL goes, I think it goes
1. San Marino
2. La Canada
3. Monrovia
4. Temple City
5. South Pasadena
and I am not going to bother including Blair's joke of a field.
Outside the RHL, Gabrielino has a pretty nice setup as well as La Salle except La Salle has no visitor bleachers to speak of.
Dawwger- here's a link that shows some of Chaminade's stadium. Doesn't show the nice neighborhood that you have to park in and walk from, but it's something.

Goldenarm and NY;
After coaching at TC with split backs on the JV level for 6 seasons and running the Oakie Defense under Vanderveer and Rodriguez...things were great for us.
With a smart coached line and speedy running backs, the wishbone would be great for any HS.
My vote: The Wishbone with audibles on the back burner.
NY
I've got no problem with the Veer, but I also like the current run scheme at TC. It is the fundamentals that you speak of that keeps TC competitive each year...I still would like to see a one play - serious straight deep threat though.
Burbanksports;
Thanx for the back on Chaminade HS.
I have searched on the web for photographs of teh stadium with negative results.
I think Scott should take a drive out there with his photographer.
SOCCER:
(No better view at a day game)
Maranatha
FOOTBALL:
St Francis
Baseball:
Jackie Robinson Field (Brookside Park)
(St Francis/Maranatha)
Dawwger's right. Chaminade has one of the best stadiums and the best atmosphere for a High School game.
I'm sure it is, especially now with the new turf. Believe it or not, I've yet to see a football game there, hence leaving it out. Good choice.
I have to agree that St. Francis is the best but So Pas is easily #2.
Goldenarm,
TC should consider going back to its Veer package that DiFiori used with good success. You don't need a ton of speed, but you do need great timing, reads and execution. Don't get me wrong, extra speed is a good thing in any offense, but the right system with crisp (read flawless) execution can overcome a lot.
Huckster unfortunatety for the PUSD they have bigger problems then football fields. What's wrong with using PCC's field they have done a lot of renuvation there and it is a decent facility. I think you said they went to school to be educators. Dont you think that maybe they have the educational well being of the students at heart. Phs and muir have some wealthy grads. If the teams want facility upgrades perhaps they should start fundraising. That is how St Francis got the money for there facilities through donations.
Scott,
South Pasadena's new football field is pretty nice. It should be great to see some games this year at their new field. What do you think?
Hate to get off topic here but there was an interesting article in the LA Times today about Muir. While it isn't perfect, it is a much more accurate portrayal of Muir's ailments than what has been written in the Star-News.
Here is the link:
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-muir31mar31,1,628843.story
Maybe more high schools should share fields, similar to Covina District Field. The City of Orange has a similar concept for about four high schools down there in the OC. Rancho Cucamonga, Alta Loma and Etiwanda play at Chaffey College. I think Galletti mentioned that Hart and Canyon play at College of the Canyons. Fields and stadiums are very expensive to build AND maintain.
I do enjoy having a stadium on campus, but there are definitely economies of scale available when sharing.
Oh, Pat Buchannan is correct and 80% of his kind thinks like him too! Thanks for saving me Pat!
I wish I could talk about a couple of decent stadiums in the area, but we have a “DUMB” Superintendent! A bunch of “DUMB” school board members! The “PUSD” period, is the worst! Pasadena High school should have a great stadium in place and Muir’s stadium should be upgraded as well! Blair and Marshall could play at either school and the PUSD would make money all the way around. But like always, if you try and do something about it, the powers that be will deny you and tell you to take another route that wouldn’t make any sense to anyone! To think, these people went to college to be educators and leaders at the highest level, for what? I don’t know! It’s a “JOKE” on the public schools and the people that attend them.
There is no argument here...SF has by far the best stadium n the area. Cozy, quaint, loud, folks peering down from high above the the field...great atmosphere and great food.
Sadly, PUSD will never invest any money that will make the fields of our four high schools something respectable.
Actually, New York, I spent a little over a year there, but am hardly partial to it. Ratliff Stadium is OK, from the picture I saw, but they didn't have stadium seats or an outragious press box like the others. I like the 'M' touch at Monrovia myself. By the way, coaches will always use scizzor lifts, even with a great press box. It's just what they do. Besides, what would a high school game be without them?
Glad to hear San Gabriel is renovating. Their was crab grass deep enough to conceal Sly Stallone and most of the Viet Cong down there. Drainage was horrible - so mud and pools of funk water were common. Home side was not bad, visitor seating was OK quality, just not much of it.
TC finally got rid of the old plank seating, which emitted splinters and skewered many a buttock, some attractive, some not. The new bleacher material conducts sound well - making foot stomping mix well with "Go TC lets go".
I like the wide-open frontier parking on the grass, especially if you get there a bit early....create your own parking aisle at any angle and watch as those entering the parking area soon align with your vehicle, forming bizarre crop circles in the grass. Rumor is the design, when seen from the orbiting space shuttle says "Have Line - Send Speed".
Arcadia's stands are falling apart a bit. It's a nice set up but they need to replace the wood with concrete, metal or new wood bleachers.
St. Francis probably has the top stadium/field. Glendale has a pretty nice field as well.
I'm kinda partial to watching a game at Blair's Varsity Baseball Field. Especially during Track and Field practice.
Scott,
I know you are partial to Dallas, but how about paying some respect to Ratliffe Stadium in Odessa?
SoCal HS stadiums simply do not compare to Tejas, but the quality of football does (at least in the All-Star Games).
I don't like how most hs fields are surrounded by a track that pushes the stands away. I can't wait for Monrovia to get a press box so we can get rid of the view-obstructing sizzor-lifts.
I love that Monrovia's field has a view of the big 'M' illumniated on the hill, and that converts to a 'V' with each Victory.
Hands down, MUIR's stadium is ugly and thugly.
Hands down it's "Minuteman Parking Lot" I mean "Stadium"
Chaminade HS, CA. Woodlyn Hills has one of best stadiums within SOCAL.
