FOOTBALL: All-Star game date and site set

Fresh off the Tribune blog: The date and site have been set for the annual Hall of Fame Senior All-Star Game.

The game will take place on Friday, June 27 at Bassett High School. The two coaches already have been selected. South El Monte High School’s Erick Escamilla will handle the West squad, which is made up primarily of Star-News schools and those from the Mission Valley League. The East team will be coached by La Puente’s Ray Hernandez. Bassett coach Leon Ward is once again the director, so coaches should get in contact with him about nominating seniors for the game. You can start by telling us who should be in the game.

My Thoughts: Taking absolutely nothing away from what Escamilla did with South El Monte High’s team this past season, but if this is supposedly and East San Gabriel Valley vs. West San Gabriel Valley game, shouldn’t the coach of the West be from the West Valley? Blair’s Tip Sanders, Muir’s Ken Howard or Pasadena’s Kevin Mills would’ve been nice choices.

This should be another great game.

BASEBALL: How the other half lives

If you haven’t been to San Marino High School’s McNamee Field lately, you’re in for a treat. Last year, I was impressed by the charming little field. Now, it’s truly a stadium. The only thing missing is a modern scoreboard. Maybe they’ll put the Jumbo Tron and the outfield pool in next season. It’s a shame all high school’s can’t have a top-flight facility like this one.
