Rams overcome deficit, top South Pasadena
By Keith Lair, Staff Writer
TEMPLE CITY - It could have been easy to call it a day. South Pasadena High School's softball team scored six runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-3 lead over host Temple City in a Rio Hondo League game on Wednesday.
"I stepped back and said, `Well, I believe in this team, and their heart, too,' " Rams coach Bob Ellingsworth said. "A lot of teams would just fold. They regrouped."
The Rams chipped away, tied the game in the sixth inning and won it in the seventh inning, 7-6.
"They came off the field and I saw it in their eyes," Ellingsworth said. "They were ready to go. They kept going at it. They executed and played great defense."
It wasn't easy, but the Rams took advantage of South Pasadena miscues. The Tigers committed three errors in the final two innings.
"I was honestly down a little bit, but I had to stay strong and think positive," Temple City shortstop Veronica Grant said. "Sometimes we get down and stay down, but this time we fought back with all of our heart."
The Rams' biggest break came in the seventh inning. Grant hit a one-out, Nichole Parada change-up - a pitch Grant said she was waiting for - to right field. The ball was picked up by right fielder Laura Parada, and then a lot happened. Grant ran into first baseman Michelle Mun and both players fell. Grant eventually reached third base.
"I wasn't expecting her to be in my way, actually," Grant said. "She's played with me before and she knows how aggressive I am. But on their side, it was kind of lucky that I hit her because my coach would have sent me home. Who would have made it home first?"
A throw might have nailed Grant at the plate, but she was on third with one out.
Caitlin Ellingsworth then laid down a bunt just in front of South Pasadena catcher Katrina Skogsbergh, with Grant heading home. Pitcher Parada made a nice dive to get on the ball, but she could not get it out of her glove in time to get it to Skogsbergh in time to tag out Grant.
"They know how to do the short game and the long game," Bob Ellingsworth said. "They know how to come at you in a lot of different ways."
Grant went 3-for-3 with a solo home run in the first inning and an RBI double in the fifth. She reached base in all four at-bats and also drew a catcher's interference call.
"Usually, Nichole gets me out," Grant said. "I just wanted a good hit. I was not expecting a home run."
The Rams scored on three errors. The Tigers scored with consecutive hits.
Shelby Gogreve doubled and Amanda Castro, Courtney Dunlap, Brittany O'Dell and Kelsey Hertel had consecutive singles. A fielder's choice and an error tied the game and Nichole Parada singled in two runs. Skogsbergh's sacrifice fly made it 6-3, and coach Ellingsworth had seen enough of Caitlin Ellingsworth.
"I think she was throwing too hard and not letting the ball move," he said. "She was trying to do too much, and sometimes you overthrow and the ball flattens out. You take a little bit off and let your ball move and do things. And they hit the ball well."
Melissa Vega came in and retired the next six batters. The Tigers got only two more runners on base, off an error and a Mun single.
The Rams then began chipping back. Alex Aguirre-Chavez walked and scored on Grant's double.
Then, in the sixth, Jessica Kosharek singled and scored when Parada threw away the ball on a play at first base. Ashley Perez then bunted down the third-base line. O'Dell threw to first base, but there was a mix-up on coverage and the ball went down the line to score O'Dell.

Jim M,
I think you misunderstood that post. I think the poster was happy for LC's recent 3 successes. Their comment "don't get to far a ahead" is probably a very fair statement. Remember last year, look at San Marino's back pedal now. Congratulations on your 1st victory over Temple City but your 2nd and 3rd games this season will be a very big challenge. Also, although South Pasadena is off to a bit of a rocky start this season, your 3 games with them will be very challenging too. Both TC and SP will be much different competition than this year's Harvard-Westlake, Monrovia, and Village Christian. although H-W and Mon. have been very good teams in the past, this year is very much a rebuilding year for both. Relatively speaking, Village Christian has not been very competitive for a long time. They do okay against competition within their own level, but again that's a relative comparison. Again, please don't take this a slam of LC. I truly think it's great that fortunes seem to be changing in your favor. i'm just commenting, as was the previous bloggger. if you win a couple more off of TC and SP, I'd be the 1st to declare this a turnaround year for LC. I wish you continued success for the rest of the season (except when your team plays mine - ha, ha).
I for one enjoy reading your posts Jim M (good grammar or not ... ha, ha). You are obviously passionate and proud of your team - good for you. Also, you've take the time to make note of positive team and player performances of others beyond your team.
People who post in this blog are not getting ahead of themselves and yeah the make mistakes spelling and with grammer. I'm the first one to do that. How come when we report our team’s situation for a game or how were currently doing we are "getting a head of our selves. Why can’t people just blog and have other bloggers just comment on the story. When was the last time someone took a shovel away from anyone in the sand box?

I'm glad you think we have an amazing school. We'll be offering scorekeeping classes later next month.
Don't miss our special "Turning an E3 into a 2B".
I have not seen Maranantha play this year and I am not questioning whether thay are good are not. I know personally that some of those kids can can flat knock the cover off the ball. But being a stat hound who pretty much combs the stats to see who is where, the numbers do not add up.
I remember it being brought up by someone else and I remember not feeling like the numbers were right in the past.
I personally think that that is a problem because awards are given out in the area because of numbers.
I actually think that Maranantha is an amazing school.
For those out there so concerned how good maranatha hits...why don't you ask those umpires who have had their games? They will tell you point blank and they have no vested interest for or against!
Well, have you seen them play or not?
Check the stats closely and you will see that I am right. And I have posted three times on this subject, the rest are others.
My daughter is not in your league nor do we play you, I am just a stat hound.
We know who you are "Mr- reply-to-your-own-posts/Maranatha hater/dad"! Do you try and disparage Maranatha because they beat your kid's school or because your kid doesn't get the attention? Fess up. Have you even seen them play? I guess you're the expert because you found Max Preps? Do you even know who keeps their book ( and I'm glad you've been following them so closely the "past couple years!") At least we narrowed it down that your daughter is a junior!? By the way, many teams do not record ROE stats and that doesn't mean they give that kid a hit for reaching base? Your flawed thinking is silly. But thanks for the attention none the less!
The teams that Maranatha plays do not make any errors. Just because a ball goes through the legs or a throw is wild doesn't mean it cannot be counted as a hit. At Maranatha we like to focus on the positive and scoring an error on the other team might be seen as a negative and we do not want to upset the other schools.
One might say, someone is lacking in credibility (dare I even say, character). It sure isn't the 11:52, 11:51, 11:47, 11:38, 9:37 posters.
It is a legitimate point, Maranatha. It's not that others are "Maranatha haters".
"a LOT of hits and ... 0 reached on error stats"
This is just one fact that lends itself to the previous posted questioning of your stats.
There is only one explanation, and your scorekeeping has been that way for at least the past couple of years.
It's one thing to claim supremecy opposite relatively poor competition, but it's another thing to overstate stats. It makes your team look very bad, and unfortunately minimizes the accomplishments of the ones that are good players on your team.
Who knows if you're the same as the previous anonymous Maranatha poster, but if anyone is the "hater", it's that previous Maranatha poster that has unexplainably attacked other athletes in this blog and it's obvious it's something personal for at least that individual. I sit by the side and can't figure it, especially considering who who your attacks are made against.
I guess it's one thing if it's a kid calling out another, but if you are an adult --- you need to check yourself personally, and you make your very fine school look very bad!!!
Snap!!!
Gotcha!!!
Start telling the truth Maranatha, it shall set you free!!!
I am not popping off and I never said the kids can't hit.But taking your advice I checked out the OBP and found that that average is exactly the batting average plus the BB's and HBP's and the plate appearances minus those (BB's and HBP's and sacs) are the exact amount of at bats, meaning that every time a kid has gotten on base when swinging the bat it has been counted as a hit.
Note: Awards often are handed out to high averages in this area, because people can't see all of the games
Yeah ... keep accurate stats!
Dear LC Fans:
Village is a good team and a tough place to play. Great job! It seems you've turned the corner with your softball program? Haven't seen you play yet but will try to catch a game. Any suggestions for maranatha on Village's team?

hey anon 9:37am/Maranatha hater:
Step away from the computer, get out and watch one of their games before you pop off! That team can hit. A.Sommers (freshman phenom) her sister K Sommers and both Hillier girls swing it. Look at Marnie Hillier's RBI's this year and last.Team is having some early defensive woes BUT they can HIT! Maybe they don't record ROE stats on Max preps but an error is an error and I'm sure their scorekkeeper knows the difference between a hit and an error! They do keep Sac stats. If a girl goes 1 for 4 and gets on 3 times you do the math! Look at OBP if you're worried about the team so much! Better yet concentrate on your daughter's team rather than worring about the lady Minutemen!
Hey LC: Hats off! Village is a good team. Did you play at their place? A very tough place to win. Looks like the RHL is in for a shake up. My prediction:
TC
LC
SP
Mon
SM
Blair
(Mon and SM are a coin toss. Top three could change order at any time.Blair is a freebie)
While perusing maxpreps for stat comparisons I remembered some posts that were pointing to Maranantha not posting proper stats. I have to say that they have a LOT of hits and count them, 0 reached on error stats. Why is that? (sorry to point that out, but I was hoping to discount any complaints when I started looking, and it seems that every plate appearance and AB is accounted for.) This would indicate that all of the teams they have played have not made any errors.
At this point, statistically, I have to point to Veronica Grant from TC as a player of the year candidate. She is sick. I am not from TC by the way.
Remember TCFan, your team still lost to LC and the win over SP was the same TC/SP game that has recurred over the last 4 years. All bets are off when that game is played.
As a matter of fact in the last 10 times that TC has played SP, the record is
5-5 and TC has scored 32 runs and SP has scored 35 runs and both teams have won all of their home games except for one each.
These kids know each other and play on the same level year in and year out. It is truly a fun grudge match everytime where both teams fight to the end, but I do not know what it means to these teams against other competition, if anything.
Poor TC fan, so oppressed.
sm already lost to sp and arcadia and then going lose to tc by the end of this week...why are they still rank in the top ten??
maybe they should still rank #1 in the area for having the most "spunk" still
Thank you.
TC, if your posts are legit, than I'm sorry. There were too many red flags pointing to bogus posts.
How 'bout this?? You come to the San Marino/Temple City game tomorrow at SM and decide for yourself where these teams rank? According to your area rankings, SM should defeat TC easily...let's see!
And if you read the story TC, you'll see that I wasn't there. I was at a volleyball match.
Aha...The power of the delete button... Interesting how my prior comments are no longer on this blog. Do you delete the blogs when you don't like what they say and feel that they jeopardize your credibility??? Maybe you don't even go to the games. It seems that there are others who agree with some of my views. Isn't that what this blog is all about?? Let's be fair about this...that's all I'm saying. Give the girls a FAIR chance!

That away LC, but don't get ahead of yourselves like last year. There is still a lot of games left against much more formidible competitors. But be proud ... you should be!!!
where did 007Bond go???
I don't play Slow pitch. I wish I did, I guess.
Oh, oh, what is that smell?
That smell is La Canada beating the team that just won five straight in Las Vegas to win their tournament? Yes, Village Christian just lost to La Canada 2-1.
La Canada pitched their two freshman and they both did very well.
LC may be on a roll.
Yahoooooooooooo.
Hey Jim M:
Are you the same Jim I play slowpitch softball in Glendale on Tues nights
Rumor has it FSH's pitcher struck out 50 for SP AND TC yesterday!
Check out how O'Dell missed the throw to first before she scored.
I'll bite Ramrodders, since you're a new poster, why was my name brought up? I'm aware of Temple City, but what's the have to do with this season? I'm not the one you need to convince.
Good points TC Fan. Scott should have realized by now that the Rio Hondo League's history in every sport puts Temple City at the forefront. Want to win a league title? Beat Temple City. Monrovia's been a force in recent years, but the history of the RHL is Temple City.
dear anon 7:35,
Yes, i did see the game and last time i checked... errors can make or break a team. It's probably fair to say that TC's defense is stronger than SP's??? Keeping your cool and making plays when you need to are all part of the game. Nice try...
Come on TC FAN if you saw the game, you know what happened, SP had 5 errors and 3 in the last two innings with two on routine plays to first that tied the game and one on an error in the outfield that put the runner on third with no outs and one of the three earlier runs were credited to an error as well. It was a gift so take it and be happy.
Wow anonymous, What a discredit to the players. No one gave anything away in that game. It was a phenomenal exhibition of softball. Errors were made on both sides, 2-3, almost equal. But minimizing the skills of the SP players, when they capitalized on TC errors to tie it at 3-3 then go up 6-3, and are uncapable of acknowledging the same on the part of the TC players when they came back and won, sounds like an issue of sore loser/poor sportsmanship on your part. Congratulations to the SP/TC softball players for playing one of the best, knuckle biting games to played in a long time.
wow
nvm about that last comment i thought this was baseball
Two Rio Hondo League games for La Canada against two pretty good teams.
Two different freshman pitchers for La Canada both going all seven innings.
Only one starter on the team that is a senior.
2-0 start in Rio Hondo???
Maybe a little early for this year to start thinking aboout league championship or making a run at the title, but the future is looking good.
Sm did not play arcadia
Dear Temple City,
You're welcome.

Actually, SP took the 6-3 lead in the fourth, and TC came back in the 6th and won it in the seventh.
