A little over a month after leading his young team to the CIF-Southern Section Division IV girls soccer quarterfinals, La Salle High School head coach Sal Lopez has stepped down.
Lopez, the 2008 Star-News girls soccer coach of the year, cited family reasons for his decision to leave after three seasons.
“My wife is in her last year of getting her teaching credential, so I need to be at home more with my kids Juliana, Isabella and Alexandria,” Lopez said. “Those three are a team right there.”
Under Lopez, the Lancers (11-11-3) finished in a tie for second in the Del Rey League and entered the Division IV playoffs as a wild card.
They earned a 3-2 victory over Lompoc and 1-0 wins over La Cañada and Patriot before falling to La Serna, 1-0, in the quarterfinals.
La Salle put itself on the map under Lopez during the 2006-07 season, when the Lancers finished 25-2-2 en route to winning the Division IV championship.
“He did a really good job and we’re real happy with what he’s done with our program,” La Salle vice principal/athletic director John Matheus said. “He’s the type of coach the players love to play for. He’s a fine individual and I wish him the best of luck. We’re sad to see him go.”
Lopez is in his fourth year as a teacher at La Salle and will continue to coach the L.A. Futbol Club of La Cañada.
In his three seasons with the Lancers, Lopez’s teams compiled an 8-2 playoff record.
“It was great,” Lopez said of his coaching tenure at the school. “The administration support is great. It’s just a timing commitment.”
Matheus said the school immediately will begin its search for a coach.
Lopez is the third coach to leave La Salle in a week.
Former Lancers head football coach Ealar Gallagher and assistant Mike DiFiori announced their resignations on Tuesday to take assistant coaching positions at Bishop Amat.
