FOOTBALL: Muir steps up, enters Saugus Under the Lights passing tournament

The Mustangs will appear in one of the top summer passing tournaments when they participate in the seventh annual Saugus Under the Lights passing tournament June 20 and 21 at Central Park in Saugus.
Muir is in Pool A with Saugus, Eastside and Taft. The Mustangs will face Saugus at 7 p.m., Taft at 8 p.m. and Eastside at 9 p.m.
Among the 24-team field, Hart, Valencia, Canyon, Long Beach Poly, Westlake, Oaks Christian and Alemany.
Saturday's action will go from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
My suggestion: If the snack bar is the same as in the past, get the tri-tip.
Muir will also be in the Claremont and San Bernardino tournaments.
Question: What are some of the top tournaments the area teams will be playing in?

I found a great diet program a couple of months ago, that helped me lose a load of weight. I was really skeptical at first, as they were going on about wholegrain pasta, as being rubbish for losing weight but then my mate whose a bit a fitness freak explained how bodybuilders eat pasta to put on mass. Anyways I gave it a try, and it was really good. I managed to lose 2 stone.

Good that Lindsay Lohan is getting determined when it comes to herself, she needs to have rehabilitation like Mel Gibson needs to have a mental health expert, perhaps the woman isn't going to get freed from treatment earlier on this one as being freed early from UCLA was most likely the main reasons why this girl relapsed so easily in the 1st place, i will be praying to help you entirely Lindsay, I truly you can get over your destructive habits.

Lohan is eligable for a sentence of 12 months and this would bring about her doing approximately twenty days. She has earned the longer time in jail so we can all pray there is a judge who see's this.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.

The Nike Combine was big on weighted vests and parachutes...the basic resistance idea.
Any SGV teams using this stuff? Not suggesting they do, just curious.
Goldenarm,
Definately agree with the blooming you are speaking off. I know kids who graduated high school being 5'10 and ended up coming out of college 6'2. Unfortunately, that all-star game is for the kids that have pretty much hit their stride as far as growth is concerned other than muscle building, fast-twitch, etc.
Big A,
To get to a camp you need an invite nowadays, which means the "establishing yourself" must come early, WELL before the senior season. Some kids bloom a little later. Basically I am saying you need good breaks as well as talent to get the recognition and exposure...and hopefully that talent shows early on...improving your chances of getting exposure
The reality is sometimes due to injury or maturation, a kid may have only a stellar senior season.
The other reality is sometimes that is just not enough to get the "looks" others might....and the opportunities that follow.
If Golper doesn't make it, so be it. ScottG, you are right in some ways but this game is pretty much for the kids who have plenty of scholarship offers and are all-americans. The kids that would have good seasons this upcoming year, should have had them last year as well to be recognized as top talent. That's why there are camps, combines, etc... to establish yourself outside of depending on a senior season.
Don't get me wrong Dad of 3, I'm well aware of the talent in that game. My argument is that there's probably a bunch of players that will have great seasons this year from around the country worthy of being in the game as well and they're already shut out because the rosters are set long before the season even begins. That's all I'm saying. And, yes, Golper should be in.
Big A
Barkley will be playing in the ESPN Under Armour game. (which is a good example of how that game is trying to steal the thunder from the older, Army game by taking top-named players)
SG- The reality is that these games have the top kids, whatever their senior season stats are. It is not just upside or potential . If you look at the rosters of these games the last few years , you will rarely see a kid that was a bust his senior year. ESPN Under Armour already has a roster listed of guys who have been selected so far. It is a very impressive list. See for yourself. When I said in an earlier post that these games feature guys projected to be top college players ,subsumed in that statement was the additional qualification that these guys have already established their credentials AND are projected to be top players.
At the Nike Combine they had a "shadow" drill where two athletes are bungeed together face to face about 2 yds apart, one takes the offensive role and tries to juke or put a move on the other, who attempts to stay in front and remain in a "tackle ready" position.
I saw one guy forearm shiver the "ballcarrier" because he was obviously suckin gas and loafing...the dude got lifted, landing on his back.
The footwork drills emphasing rapid fire foot placement and timing were not for the uncoordinated freshman...a couple guys even at that level were struggling to get it right.
I plan on going to Carson and checking it out, at least the 1 on 1's.
That's all well and good BigA, but all the game amounts to is a game of all-stars from a year ago or players projected to do well in college? So this is actually the pre-season All-American game. Don't get me wrong, there's players there that deserve it, but are they soley chosen by upside and potential?
ScottG,
That's where you have it wrong. The Army game is in very early January. If some kids season ends in, late November, that only gives the people who run the all-star game a limited two months to scout, prepare and determine who goes to the game and who doesn't. That doesn't give them much time when it comes down to 80 kids being selected to the game. They probably have to start early as it is hosted by NBC and is shown on national television.
Dad of 3,
Is Matt Barkley going to be playing in the Army All-American game?
Goldenarm-
It sounds like SGV guys coming to the Scout Combine will be Dietrich Riley and Golper from West SGV and from the ESGV Brent Seals and Sheldon Price. I am pretty sure Chase Rettig was invited but has some other commitment.
BTW - the Santa Fe passing tournament usually has a Lineman component to it- agility drills, etc. and even a tug of war. And for my two cents on the passing leagues, I agree they help get the kids into a rhythm and help build some team spirit. They should have a positive influence on guys learning their routes and defenders with their cover skills. Sometimes they can get physical, depending how far the coaches will allow it. Goldenarm- at the Nike Camp if you watched the RB-LB 1 on 1's, you may have seen Marquis Simmons manhandle guys and bump them off their routes. OTH, guys like Burfict and Golper worked strictly on their cover technique. I saw Golper at the Santa Fe passing tournament last year knock TE Morrell Presley from Carson ( an '09 USC commit) on his butt in a very clean play. But whatever they are, Passing Leagues are still drills and only a teaser for what happens in the fall when real football comes along. Flag football and tackle football are two different animals.
Goldenarm-
The Scout combine is at the Home Depot from 11-3. Testing is the AM and 1 0n 1's and drills in the afternoon. I don't know what other SGV guys are coming . They usually restrict it to 200 invitees. I will try to find out about other SGV guys. I know there are a lot of top West Coast guys coming though, including some of the top QB's who didn't come to the Nike Camp .
Another aspect I failed to mention where passing leagues and tournament help teams is on defense. Defensive backs and corners get all sorts of valuable work.
Dad of 3,
where is the 5/31 Combine - and do you know if Golper is the sole invitee from the WSGV?
NY,
your going both ways point is on the money...and it affects so many things. Just look at any nose tackle/offensive lineman late in the 4th quarter, or a fullback/MLB around the same time. Conditioning is king...even then it is still a gut-check.
06 TC had dudes who chalked the goal lines and didn't leave until the field lights went dim. Better bet is stick with physical and physical and look surprised and happy when finesse shows up.
Goldenarm,
It also seems that teams who can't run the ball at critical times (short yardage) also have trouble stopping the run at critical times (short yardage in the fourth quarter). That may be due to their defense getting stuck on the field for a disproportionate amount of time as a result of the offense not chewing enough clock. It could also stem from a lot of guys going both ways and trying to play TOO much finesse offense and then expected to play physical defense. Even Don Marham's CIF championship teams were able to pass for 100+ yards a game, usually on about 6 attempts, so I am fully aware of the need to have a proficient passing game.
I like how the University of Oregon has nearly perfected the "finesse run". That is probably a great strategy for teams who do not have the mammoth offensive lines. The caveat, though, is that they need fast backs. If a team has neither physical linemen nor fast running backs...maybe they need to drop a couple divisions.
Thanks for explaining that Dad of 3. It would be great to see Todd in that game. I just think it's strange that it's more of a prospects game than an All-Star game based on what a kid does during the season. But that's just me.
SG-
The Army AA game is now more of a showcase of guys who are projected to be top college players. The ESPN UnderAmour game is trying to surpass it in prestige and probably already has 25% its roster set. The third big national game is the Offense- Defense game, which is still new. It is sort of like college recruiting in general .Everything is speeded up . Just like colleges are making offers to kids earlier and earlier and commitments are common before a player's senior year, the same is becoming true with these national All-Star games. Golper has been nominated. That does not mean he has actually been picked yet. But if he performs well at the Scout combine on May 31 or the B2G camp in June , he may get an offer by any of these games well before his senior season. The odds are he will.Just the way it is now, I guess.
Fred J is getting skewered alive over there. It is ridiculous that some bloggers went psycho demanding the scouting guru's name...like some lynch mob mentality or trying to ferret out the neighborhood pedophile.
Calls for censorship, intense moderator presence seem well founded. Somehow, you got to bring it back to football.
I saw that as well. Not to take anything away from Golper because he's an outstanding player and quite deserving, but in the grand scheme of things, isn't that game an All-Star game? Shouldn't rosters be based on how players perform this season? Seems a bit odd.
Speaking of Golper, I just read something in the LA Times SGV blog that Golper is the only SGV player (east or west) to have been nominated for the Army All-American game next January in San Antonio.
Goldenarm-
I think the scout guy who did those rankings over on the Trib blog clarified he was not including the West SGV in his player evaluations but you wouldn't have known it the way it was written .He did give kudos to Golper once called on it. You are certainly correct they are awfully arrogant over there. They act like the West SGV doesn't play any football.I hope with the CIF re-alignment some of our area teams take a bite out of them in the playoffs. I am sure the supporters of Bishop Amat at least know of Golper. After all, BA has two guys committed to UCLA with Volper,I mean Golper: Price and Bowens .If the rest don't , they are remarkably myopic since every recruiting evaluation service in the country has rated him as one of the top linebackers in the nation. I am also amazed at the acrimony over on that blog . People love or hate Amat and it seems to take up a lot of their blog space. It makes SG's blog over here look like a lovefest. Even the way those people took out after that scouting guru was nothing short of disrespectful.I used to laugh at some of the jabs people here took at Huckster but in the end it seems to have been in good jest and I think Huckster took it that way. This blog board by and large has good commentary with some substance to the remarks rather than just trash talk.
Goldenarm,
Maybe this year in the playoffs when Arcadia plays an ESGV team, he can light one of them up and maybe pronounce his name correctly. Might leave a nice impression.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Burroughs and Muir handle business in this upcoming season. Reuben Thomas is a stud at Muir.
Dad of 3,
I saw your post on the Trib blog regarding the omission of Golper - on the who is who of SGV football. Maybe when he gets an INT or fumble recovery at UCLA...they all will come out singing his praises. Despite a couple words of praise for coach D at Arcadia, the tribbers seem to selectively forgotten Golper's Rivals/Scout ranking, UCLA commit etc.
Over there he is either unknown or referred to by his Russian/Ukrainaian counterpart name "VOLPER".
It used to piss me off...I'm over it.
I think we can all agree without capable strength, attitude and technique up front - any offense of any design anywhere is going to struggle.
If you CAN'T RUN and MUST PASS, a good defensive team will smother the one dimensional aspect, imagine an entire season of 3rd and 10 and no possibility whatsoever of clock management, not to mention D lineman teeing off at warp speed at your QB all year.
As far as wide outs and receivers, I love coaches who DEMAND they block and block well. How many times have you seen an openfield no block or missed block be the one thing between the ball carrier and the goal line?
Santa Fe is a great tournament. Usually has St Bonaventure and Chaminade from
that area , Corona Centennial and JR North and IE powers ,LA City schools like Carson, Narnbonne , Banning . Mira Costa usually goes. Top flight teams
New York, the hitting I'm talking about is during and after the play. It can get pretty physical, and if your're a receiver, it gets you ready for the season.
As far as the most established programs, what's stopping any school from around here from having the same success? You hit the nail on the head, up there, the weight training and everything else is in sync. It can be here too. I've been at passing tournaments where the winning teams treat it as if they won CIF. That's not what this is about. But these tournaments can build a winning attitude. I've seen it up there. You can really tell the haves from the have-nots under the searing summer heat. Building up the line's strength is important as well. That's what made Hart, Canyon and the year Valencia met Mission Viejo in the finals so good. Nobody could touch their quarterback.
Didn't we talk about Passing League in another thread a few weeks back?
I will have to agree with NY and say that passing league is not that physical. I think it proves absolutely nothing if you "accidentally" take people down in a passing league scrimmage because the majority of kids playing aren't in that mentality yet as far as knocking heads.
I also recall kids who kicked major butt in passing league because they knew they weren't going to get hit but once we put on shells those kids might as well have run cross country because they didn't ANYTHING during the season.
Is it a good way to practice timing, reading defenses and reading offenses and being able to adjust, yes. Does it show how successful you will be during the season? That is debatable.
In 2000, while at TC JV football...we participated in the Summer Passing League Tour. and we got our *@$%^ kicked. Passing league is a WALK in the park compared to REALITY of full WAR gear! I know many players who were enroute to All-American and All-CIF status during passing league and when HELL- week came along and the Shells were put on...they quit!!!
ANyhow, that 2000 JV season we were a perfect 10-0 Rio Hondo League champs and we beat ALL POWER HOUSE LOS ALTOS 7-6. How do you like them apples???????????
DAWWGER
Fair enough, Scott, but you are also referring to two of the most established programs in Southern California with knowledgeable staffs and plenty of resources. I really doubt that Hart's receivers are short-changed with their time in the weight room and doing their plyometrics. If coaches are organized enough to have their players condition AND play in the tournaments, then that's great.
Scott, I really don't think that running routes while not wearing pads and throwing a ball with no pads will get timing down. It definitely helps, but the timing is still different than when wearing pads. Similar to why long snappers should always practice while wearing shoulder pads helmuts and kickers should do the same.
Passing league competition does help QB's and receivers communicate better and make their reads and sight adjustments. There is a lot of value to that.
In these 7 on 7 drills, though, QB's don't have to throw over a line of scrimmage and receivers can extend their arms higher than when wearing shoulder pads. Physical? Are we really talking about Yards After Contact during passing league, Scott? At least flag football has a live rush on the QB (until they get to him anyway).
Scott, didn't Canyon Country pound the ball a ton with DiLuigi? Isn't play action pass a large part of the passing game that is difficult to replicate without the front line selling it? At any time Hart can grind as well.
Mental preparation and spirit of competition, as well as getting a glimpse of the skill guys at the other schools, is the huge takeaway for me from passing tournaments.
Teams like Hart and Canyon have made a living off of setting up the long ball with a healthy diet of short stuff all over the field. Even then, they've never lived, per-say, by the long ball.
Muir, San Gabriel, La Salle and even St. Francis have the capability and talent to do the same type of stuff because of either the quarterback (Muir, San Gabriel and La Salle) or stud receivers returning (Muir and St. Francis). Once San Gabriel and La Salle figure out who their quarterbacks are going to rely on, they'll be fine also. Last year's Pasadena team was a prime example of what a solid offensive line, smart quarterback and talented receivers can do.
And make no mistake about it, there is contact at these passing leagues and tournaments. If you've been to one, you know what I'm talking about. Hardly flag football. Receivers learn how to be tough.
From my experience passing leagues boil down to a basic premise...teams that are built around and dependent upon the pass - do well. I wonder if Arroyo or San Gabriel fit that group this year?
While the fastest teams may be cited as favored, it is the "timed" routes that prove most effective and are the toughest to defense against. A 5 or 10 yard out, cut sharply and with a slight angle back to the QB...is basically unstoppable on any level. This of course hinges on an accurate passer and one who delivers the ball low and away. INT's are kicks to the groin in passing leagues (not too enjoyable in real games either) Hopefully QB's and receivers have been ironing out the 3,5.7 drops to match with breaks on receivers routes. Nothing as pretty as a ball thrown pre-break and arriving in stride to a player as he turns and anticipates throw arrival! Done perfectly, the receiver may already have created enough distance between him and defender to allow an upfield turn. If an extreme effort is made to smother the out pattern - it opens the out and up or old reliable - the post.
A well coached defensive crew CAN shut down the long ball...and counter the "throw it long and let the dude run under it" theory....with good rotation and experience enough to not become lost on crossing routes, or become a "spectator"...which was why my strong safety career ended in 2 games. Things go slow motion...and suddenly their is a spiral falling down out of the lights to a guy just over your shoulder. That sucks.
A back up QB - WHO HAS SKILL- is crucial. STANGS... practice your tip drill!
when does the hall fame teams come scott
I just seen the “Dogs” practice and when they get the “QB” position together I see them being a physical terror! Passing league will be big for them this year, because of the new “QB” but defensively they are going to be really good with a hell of a defensive line. The O-line will be good too, which should help a lot. I’m excited about the up coming season. GO DOGS!!!!!!!!
Arcadia will be attending the Santa Fe passing tournament @ Santa Fe HS. 40+ teams participate.
Stang fan, I'm glad you brought up Long Beach Poly. The Jackrabbits, along with schools like St. Bonaventure haven't always had the best teams in terms of passing league. See, a team like Muir will benefit, much like it did last year at the Claremont tournament, because they pass the ball. A running team will be a running team. Long Beach Poly is one of the few teams left that can pound the ball down your throat without throwing much because of the vast talent base it attracts. Schools like Hart, on the other hand, will pass it down your throat and lives and dies with the passing leagues and tournaments for training.
NY, you finally said something I totally disagree with. Having covered the Foothill League (Hart, Canyon, Valencia, Saugus) for six seasons as well as quite a bit of passing league games and tournaments, I can tell you two things. One: the tournament is one of the best around with teams playing as if it were the CIF finals. No. 2: The four schools I mentioned, Hart and Canyon in particular, have among the best strength and conditioning programs around and build their programs around it. Canyon holds a big weightlifting competition every year. At the same time, they use these passing leagues to prepare themselves in terms of timing and execution. By the time they're in pads, the offense is already clicking. Muir would be wise to gain some tips while their there.
GA,
The starting QB will be Reuben "Bingo" Thomas. A better runner than passer, Bingo is going to be the driving force for the Stangs this year.
NY,
I agree with you somewhat, especially considering LB Poly's lack of great success in passing leagues and their dominance during the regular season. And the fact that many teams run such BS plays during passing league, like TE Drags down the L.O.S. I guess my devil's advocate response is, why then, do ALL of the teams feel the need to participate?
SG,
I am happy to see Muir in these tourneys if nothing else than to compete against the best, and getting the school's name back into the minds of So Cal high school football fans.
LET'S GO STANGS!!!!!!!!!
There seem to be some real heavy hitters in this tournament. Good for Muir.
My feeling on passing tournaments, though, is that while they are a good way to get the competitive juices flowing, they run the risk of distracting the skill guys from their weightlifting and other conditioning. The other negative is that QB's can throw further and receivers can run faster and go up the ladder for balls better than normal because nobody is wearing shoulder pads. Success in these things can be very deceptive. It is a better proxy for flag football.
who is expected to start at QB for the Stangs this year?
