FOOTBALL: Who will step up and surprise in 2008?
With spring conditioning going on, it's time to start laying odds on who will be the teams to watch, and who might be a sleeper.

My opinion: I think San Gabriel and La Salle are definitely teams to keep an eye on. Both have solid quarterbacks returning. Both have receiver issues to deal with.
Muir has a good quarterback with speed galore at receiver. Could this team be more pass-happy than last year with Youngblood? Arcadia has Golper, but who's going to fill the void left by the departure of Walker and Amhaz? Monrovia has Marquise Williams returning and that's a major plus. Will Pasadena find a way to fill massive voids? Same with Blair and Alhambra. Will Flintridge Prep, Maranatha and Rio Hondo Prep be factors in the small-school circuit?

I hear all these great heroic episodes about "tip"
how many kids has he gotten out to college? and not pcc, glendale a div.1,2,3 school. How much time did he spend with these boys in the off season preparing them for the months of non football activities? in the classroom thats where your money is. show me a program and i'll see the classroom as evidence!!!

New York,
MHS definitely has better athletes than my alma mater (SP). Our guys don't compare to players that MHS has had like Akil Harris and Mike Ainsworth. I will admit that a lot of our better players do leave prior to entering high school because they go to private schools with more success.

THE TEAM THAT LAVELL "TIP" SANDERS WILL GO WITH

PurdueAlum05,
It's not as if we have a bunch of blue-chippers like Thropay sitting around waiting their turn. However, we definitely have guys on campus every year who can at least compete well in high school. I mentioned Richard Kilbury, the Junior ace on our baseball team. Kilbury backed up Potts as a sophomore in 2006 but simply did not even come out for football his junior year. I'm sure there is more to the story than wanting to focus on baseball. Even if he did not want to play QB, we could use a kid with his frame and competitive spirit elsewhere on the team.

Does anyone have a link to the new division break downs?

Observantcat,
That is pretty impressive that Monrovia can lose a player like Josh and still reload. Thanks for the info!

Undefeated Frosh teams at Monrovia are fairly common. Ironically, two frosh classes that did not go undefeated were the first two that subsequently made it to the CIF Finals in 1997 and 1998 as seniors, they lost to Duarte and Etiwanda, respectively as freshman.
Sorry for the trip down memory lane. I know we are suppose to talk only about the thread title...

I did not realize Monrovia freshman team went undefeated. I hope I am wrong, but I believe TC freshman did not win a game last season. They had a decent number of kids however, and that is a positive.
I believe that makes two seasons in a row for the Wildcat freshman to go undefeated, yes? Like I've said a couple times, Maddox jumped on a seaworthy boat, definitely not a sinking one, especially with talent in the pipeline as usual in M-town.

PurdueAlum05:
Josiah was a Freshman QB that Started on the JV Team and was the Sub on the Varsity team. But I dont know the Freshman QB's name, but I do know that he wasn't so bad leading the Freshman squad to an undefeated season.

Observantcat,
Josh Thropay is the freshmen QB who transferred to Bishop Amat, so the rumor is. Is there another QB there that I do not know about?

NY:
I understand that Kilbury will not be playing Varsity football this year, Which I do find kind of interesting...Since he played Behind Potts for two years as a sophmore. Last year the JV QB took over and was Much better than expected...This QB situation in going to be a real mystery. I heard that the Freshman QB might step up to the helm and play. Since Bishop Amat Stole our thunder by taking Throplay. I'm hoping that Monrovia goes into a wing formation offense and does an old school Nebraska...

NY, it might, but the reason I was given was because he's concentrating on baseball. Again, that could change.

I thought the Monrovia coaching change may have encouraged him reconsider.

NY, I was told Richard wasn't going to play, but that obviously can change.

O-Cat,
Any word on whether or not Richard Kilbury has returned to the football team? I think San Marino's Nick Wilson shows that an ace piture can go through the football season.

Observantcat, I saw Williams play and your description is perfect. All you have to do is look at the schedule and you can figure out the games he didn't play in, all losses. The only loss he played in was the last game and that was almost an upset. He's a player to watch.

None of the teams you mentioned had a chance to see Marquise in action except TC..so I think this should be fun to watch. A couple of years ago he almost transferred to Orange Luthern..where his fist cousin got player of the year.

We are at your house week 1 of league play.
Zero week with the Apaches should be interesting. A little Golper/Williams to fire up the season.
I know you have Beckman again, you play Duarte as well?

I think that the Wildcats will be the area surprise this season. Not to many preseason teams got a chance to see Marquise Williams in his prime form. Here's a Kid who gained over 200 yrds in the first half of the game against a really tough Cantwell defense during the playoffs.. If he is overlooked as just another back some teams will be doomed by his running style. Long deceptive strides and the strength to pedal all the way to the endzone. Monrovia did lose a hell of a young Sophmore QB but they may stick to a solid running game. Kendal Boggs a four year starting dB will probably see some action in the backfield as well. I think the difference makers will be on the defense. The core of the Monrovia D...led by Jr. Josh Lowden will surprise a lot of doubters of their ability to stop the run and disrupt the passing game. It should be an interesting year with the new Coach at the helm. Monrovia also has a couple of running backs that will probably establish a name for themselves before this season is over...My Pick is still the Wildcats to prevail as area team to take it the distance....But good luck to all the others who feel the same about their teams..

Viking Fan,
Any first impressions on the new head coach?
Posted by: Goldenarm | May 21, 2008 7:28 PM
Since the question of "sleeper" is asked..I stick with La Canada, despite some very well made points from Matt suggesting all is possibly not well over there.
Monrovia has the talent again, and it goes well beyond RB's. JV champs join a host of solid returnees. New coach comes with a rep of hard-nosed and hard working....here lies the greatest potential in the RHL. I anticipate Maddox to make his mark sooner rather than later.

I think Blair will do ok this season. Don't know if we'll be league champs again, but don't count us out.

Temple City looks solid as does Monrovia. They will be fighting for league but I have to pick the Rams this year. Muir’s Youngblood should burn up the league. San Gabriel will also have a solid year passing. Retig passing at La Salle? Although La Salle has a very talented O line, they are all juniors and have young receivers. On that note, after a strong year, Maranatha plays La Salle this year. This is great for Pasadena locals. After a season to remember, Blair will be down due to a lack of admin support. PHS? As much as it pains me, the “Bell” stays with the Mustangs. Arcadia? Look for Arcadia to be the surprise of the local teams. /cheers
