John F,

I am not an expert on softball, but I do play one on tv AND I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Ram Fan answered your question about Ferri, so that is clear. I predicted a while back that Jessica Ferri will have more college success than any player from the area in college, and that says a lot considering the success of Jessica Stewert and Alessandra Giampaolo.

I did see Katherine Poet play last year and she should have been mentioned on my list but I flat out forgot to put her there, and because of the success of Missouri and her being a full time starter she should be at the top of the list. She has great natural skills and enough intensity and power to help a team like Missouri get to the Super Regionals. That is impressive.

Speaking of impressive, how about that Louisiana Lafayette team beating Florida yesterday and how about the Pac 10 staying on top of the food chain? Get that DVR going so you don't miss a game.

ESPN2 tonight at 6:00pm coverage starts.

Jessica Ferri from Sacred Heart is only a junior. She isn't a senior to be playing in the senior all-star game.

World Series or playoffs finals to the World Series ... either way, to make it as one of the final 16 teams in the country, and for this kid to start as a
freshman ... it's pretty ticky-tacky not to mention that accomplishment as
extremely impressive.

Sometimes you have to wonder, when certain kids have successes, if they are from a certain league or team, those successes are discussed as if the kid flew all the way to the pearly gates with one angles wing and then back again. Or, if the kid isn't from a certain league or team, their successes
are ignored or minimized. Just an observation.

chkyrslf, since you are the area expert, why isn't that Sacred Heart pitcher
playing in the private/public game. Isn't she a Pasadena kid too? If you
read the Glendale News Press, they apparently see her play all of the time.
Recently they reported her as having 200 and something strikeouts in half as many innings, 5 no hitters with 3 perfect games, and 4 more shutouts, a sub-1 ERA, and then she hit something like a .500 BA. I heard she pitched
nearly every game and they were all complete games ... if she doesn't strike'em all out and then hit in a couple of runs, her team has little chance of winning the game in the very tough Mission League, which is in a higher CIF division. I heard at the CV playoff game the other day, that there is a rumor that she is going to be named the Pitcher of the Year in that League too ... is that possible from that team in that League?

Just to point out the Super Regionals is not the College Softball World Series. The College Softball World Series starts today at 10:00am Pacific with Louisiana Lafayette vs Florida on ESPN.

Softball soundly beat the college baseball world series in ratings last year and probably will do the same this year. It sure is fun to watch on TV. That is why most of the games will be broadcast on ESPN and ESPNHD.

One other name in D1 is Ashley Dimkich from San Marino who was a senior this year at University of Kentucky. Here is link to a story on their website that I discovered that gives her accolades:

You left out the best of all of them.

Aside from being a highly accomplished student, Katherine Poet who graduated last year from little Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy has been a starter as a freshman all season with the Division 1 nationally ranked University of Missouri softball team. This season Missouri made it to one of the final 16 college softball teams in the country competing in the “Women's College World Series”. Missouri made it to the “Super Regional’s” last weekend but were eliminated by 3rd ranked Alabama. Since pitching phenom Lindsay Parker (La Canada '94) with Fresno State won the Women’s College World Series 10 years ago, I think Alessandra Giampaolo (Poly '04) and Katherine Poet (FSHA '07) are the only 2 softball players from our area that have made it this far in the “Women's College World Series”. Also, it’s pretty rare to be a consistent starter as a freshman, especially at such prominent college softball programs.

Other area kids that played NCAA Division 1 softball:

Lauren Murphy (Westridge '06) - Harvard University
Wendy Bingham (Poly '00) – Princeton University
Jennifer Giampaolo (Poly '94) – University of Notre Dame
Erin Miller (La Canada '04) – Princeton University
Meredith Cervenka (La Crescenta '01) - Long Beach
Melinda Moulden - (La Crescenta '96) - Michigan
Lindsay Parker (La Canada '94) – Fresno State
Dani Mellin (La Canada '03) – Sacred Heart University

Are you referring to the Public and Private? Our game isn't East-West.

NCAA said:

North-South roster came out today. When might we see the East-West roster?

chkyrslf said:

Giampolo is a big time bonafide star!
She is also joined by several others in D1 softball from the psn area that I know of. Here is the list I know:

Krissy Mihm/Monrovia/Cal State Northridge
Cassie Gogreve/South Pasadena/ U of South Carolina
Katie McWhirter/Monrovia/UC Santa Barbara
Julie Franklin/Temple City/U of Hawaii
Megan Stone/San Marino/UC Riverside
Shelby Gibbs/Arcadia/Santa Clara
(please add to the list if someone is left out!)

There are others playing D2, NAIA, and at strong JC's as well, but I will keep the list to D1, since that is what was requested.
