TRACK AND FIELD: Muir's owens out
Mustangs sprinter ruled academically ineligible.
Questions: What does this do to Muir's chances at CIF and, more importantly, how does this affect the school's athletic programs in general?
One of Muir's top sprinters, Ahmere Owens, will likely miss the remainder of the track and field season because he is academically ineligible, coach Mike Knowles said.
Owens competed in both 110- and 300-meter hurdle events, in the 100 and 200 and on the 400 and 1,600 relay teams at some point this season. He did not compete at last Friday night's Pacific League finals at Arcadia.
"We hope we can get him straightened out," Knowles said. "It really hurts losing him."
He will miss Saturday's CIF-SS Division III preliminary meet. If he becomes eligible, he would be only available in the relays, if the Mustangs advance past the prelims.
The loss hampers the Mustangs' sprinting depth, especially since the team has had a variety of injuries throughout the season.

I know one of the young men on the track team. I wish them all the best and hope that with the restructuring of Muir that academics are first and foremost and that the student athletes get the assistance/tutoring that they need.
Such incredibly talented young people go to that school - but without strong leadership they have more of an opportunity to falter - which is not fair.
My child will be going to a D1 school in the fall and on our first campus visit the academic advisor met with us and set us straight on the "grades" aspect upfront and the assistance (tutors, extra classes) that my child can get if they start to falter.
In other words - it was impressed upon us that if you don't get the grades - you don't play - and there goes your scholarship.
I will keep Mr. Owens in my prayers. Hopefully this will refocus him.

I really don't know enough to comment in depth on how this rule is structured and applied. I know only the basics.
However, the penalty for non-compliance is well known and plenty harsh to serve as a deterrent. YOU CANNOT PARTICIPATE. That plaque gets hung on you for a while.
What a loss for all concerned..I hope Owens bounces back and gets focused - and grabs any support available to work through this.

Stang Fan, it was just a general question with the goings on at the school as it pertains to academics and the direction the school is going.

Scott,
This hurts Muir's chances BIG time, especially if the other guys have nagging injuries. With him they most certainly win CIF.
As far as your other question, "How does this affect the athletic programs in general," I'm not sure I understand. Do you mean how does Owen's ineligibilty affect the other programs or the ineligibility of students in general?

Sad because he is a tremendous athlete but more important he has the talent to compete at the next level but grades ar eaffecting his entire future. Hopefully this is a wake up call but if not he will end up on the streets like so many other kids these days in Pasadena.
