Player of the Year: Jonny Wang
School: San Marino
Year: Freshman
Accomplishments: Wang began the season as the Titans' No. 2 player behind Daniel Weingarten, but quickly asserted himself as the team leader as the season progressed. He eventually defeated Weingarten to become the Rio Hondo League singles champion. Wang served as the team's No. 1 during its CIF-SS Division II semifinal match against Palm Desert and swept all three of his sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0. A highly-ranked amateur player, Wang finished the season with a 41-4 record. He was named the team's Rookie of the Year by his teammates.
What he said: "It was a great season and I got to play on a team, which was something new because tennis really isn't a team sport. I played another sport, water polo, and it kind of helped me being on a team."

Coach of the Year: Tim Pawley
School: La Salle
Year: Fifth
Accomplishments: Pawley coached the Lancers to a 16-4 record (10-0 in Del Rey League) and a trip to the CIF-Southern Section Division V finals. His team was successful both on the court and in the classroom, where it achieved the No. 1 grade- point average of any team in any sport in the CIF.
What he said: "The fact that I'm most pleased about is we've gone one step better than the year prior."

hey everyone is talking about my lil bro :)

from what i know SM tennis is about alot politics ( pleasing the parents, giving older kids awards over younger kids etc) and often time awards and recognitions are not given based on a performance base but instead it is based on a statutory state. Nick is prob older than johnny and has been on a team longer and i guess that's how he got the "MVP". is it right? no i don't think so but that's how SM functions. SM is like a gigantic caste system... the elderly is always given an advantage over the fresh meat. and there are plenty of examples to prove it... take a look at Paconi.. i don't know if hes still there but didn't he had an affair with a highschool student and he got away with it? and then let's look at officer Hernadiz or something... he was fired for having an affair with the secretary or something..

I was looking for one of my teammates and ran into this when I searched Titan Tennis. Johny Wang...I should go see him play sometime :). But hey, what can I say...all the guys on the team are pretty hot. And they're ALL wonderful at tennis. GO TITANS!

Jonny doesn't want to play for Temple City or Poly. Their teams suck. Besides, Jonny wants to return to San Marino next season to win the Most Improved Player Award.

haha that's funny

Man this blog is getting more entertaining every moment. Some wild things are being said here. Who makes this kind of stuff up.
Well, let me clarify... Jonny probably wants to go to Temple City because he loves looking at the girls there. I wish he could go to Pasadena Poly because I rather see him in a private school for his education . Poly is the best local private school and it's very close to his house.

So,unless someone with some influence at Poly reads this and can help Jonny get into Poly,he's staying put at San Marino High .

i can tell you right now that jonny is not going to either one of those schools. Kal do you think you can clarify on this issue of where jonnys going next year?

anonymous said:

i heard that jonny is moving to temple city... but he really wants to go to pasadena poly

Your comments are the most intelligent so far. You blow away all the other previous comments just like Jonny destroyed his competition. Maybe next year Jonny has to golden bagel his opponents to win the MVP. I wish you would reveal who you are so I could personally shake your hand and congratulate you on your honesty.

Scott: I can say this, our team played San Marino and Johnny Wang just went and beat the crap out of our best players. He played so flawlessly with not much of any noise or reaction. This guy's a quiet assassin on the tennis court. I heard that he counts the points, not games that he gives his opponents. To see a freshman play like that, shows how mentally tough he is. Johnny really deserves the MVP. Nick is a doubles player and he struggles to win his matches. It's not even fair to compare the two,Johnny is in a different class,he was by far better than their #1 Daniel W. So,why did Nick get the MVP. Something is wrong here. Sometimes the quiet guy gets overlooked and that may be the case here. I wished we had Johnny on our team,we'll give him the MVP anytime, any day,any year.

Scott,
Congrats on your new job. You will enjoy Albuquerque, the people, culture, fans, "the pit", and the passion. On another note, I have to agree with Kal's comments. There is no argument over the selection of Jonny for POY. Perfect choice. But what about team MVP. I know you had nothing to do with it but it is still a hot topic. For some reason, dishonesty and inaccuracies always surface on your blog. Team MVP should NOT be based on popularity, grade level, the number of girlfriends, the car you drive, etc. It should be based on results, accomplishments, success, WINS, etc. JR Giddens was Mountain West Player of the Year. I bet you he was MVP on his team, not the 6th man who cheered the loudest. San Marino residents, players, and students are not that dumb. We are highly intelligent, educated people who cannot be fooled. The San Marino community is passionate about their tennis. This is why this won't go away.
Good luck Scott and
Go Lobos!

well here I go again.... my $.02 worth.. This was squarely a coach's decision for the MVP..When I found out that Jonny got 'rookie of the year' award instead of the MVP,I thought, "thanks coach John for throwing Jonny a bone and giving him something because the team voted for Nick'...
Then I found out later that the team did not vote for the MVP and it was just chosen by the coach. Well, I didn't want to see that 'rookie of the year award'.
Every team I have ever been associated with, always had a secret(some not so secret)vote for MVP. San Marino JV tennis team voted last year and also this year for their MVP.
My college tennis team voted our 8th man as MVP because he inspired the rest of the team to do well, but it was still a TEAM vote... One year,we had 2 MVPs a team MVP and the coach's MVP. We gave the team's MVP to the guy the team voted for and coach's MVP to a senior because had gave his best for 4 years...

It was a great year for Jonny and I'm very proud of all his accomplishments but the team MVP is about being the best and who the team deemed as their best...It's like the team gives you a pat on the back and says you're our man ,a job well done, thanks

If coach John thinks that giving Nick the MVP because he is really more VALUABLE
than Jonny because of his results an play then it's very just, but I can't see that... Then we have to define VALUABLE...if it's only win/lost the Jonny
deserves it hands down...If it's some other intangible difference that Nick brings to the team then I need someone to explain that to me.
I don't know the inner-workings of SM varsity tennis team or maybe the coach doesn't thinks that the boys are mature enough to cast an intelligent vote so he has to choose for them.
If coach John thinks that Jonny will eventually get his MVP award next year or the year after or the year after that, then I must object.
Personally, I do not put my trust in the future.. We cannot know if anyone will be there in the future. Jonny may decide to quit tennis or get hurt and never be able to play tennis again, thus he will never get his MVP.
Saying ,I am the MVP and seeing it on a resume rings very loud. If someone deserves it NOW give it to him NOW.... or at least let the team vote ..

We picked the MVP for the All-Area. The team MVP would be picked by the team.

Scott: with your experience, who chooses the MVP ?..I know in pros sports,it's the writers or owners or coaches or popular votes.. in college it was always the players on the team... how about high school? I asked some kids on different sports team and all of them said 'the team votes'.. why is this so controversial ?

anonymous said:

no i understand that scott, im just putting it out there in saying that there are some big problems there that need to be solved

p.s. congrats on your new job
Go Lobos!!

Anon: I didn't have anything to do with the team MVP. And I haven't heard anything about Weingarten not returning.

anonymous said:

well whatever, i think san marino in general was very disfunctional and at the end of the day the lack of discipline on the team (a result of the coach) showed and they didn't win. and i believe this disfunction is simply showing even more with this whole MVP thing. and now i heard weingarten isn't going to play next year (seriously?)....oh well what a shame, a team that good should not be stopped because of a lack of discipline

I think they're separate entities. A team MVP is someone the team feels is the leader and rallies around. It doesn't necessarily mean that player is the best. Jonny Wang began the season as a freshman with a tremendous junior background. Whether the team voted him MVP or not is a team matter. He was clearly the best player in the area, let alone his team.

anonymous said:

Scott,
What do you think about the whole MVP vs. PYO deal?

anon said:

yes scott, i am 100% sure. jonny received rookie of the year, while nick chang (11) received MVP. now i'm not saying nick shouldn't be recognized for his play but if you look at the numbers and everything else jonny was without a doubt the MVP (Most Valuable Player)=without him SM would not stand a chance

Are you sure about that anon? The coach sure gave Jonny a big endorsement for POY.

anon said:

by MVP I mean team MVP....i believe the other anonymous expalins exactly what i am saying and how i feel about the matter...it is a case of favoritism...jonny should have gotten MVP but because the coach chose he didnt...had it been a team vote he would have undoubtedly gotten it

anonymous said:

Scott,
Thanks for supporting Jonny, the San Marino boys, and Titan tennis. Jonny was the area's best player, no doubt. He was the most dominating player in Division II. Answer me one question: How is Jonny the player of the year but not the MVP-best player on his own high school team? Let's set the record straight, his teammates didn't vote him MVP, that's why he didn't win the award. Instead, he was the rookie of the year? This is not the NBA!

He didn't win MVP? Are you talking league? If so, he was the league champion.

anon said:

amazing how jonny wang is player of hte year but doesn't win mvp. i dont think thats right. i dont believe that just because hes a freshman mean he shouldnt be mvp
